As I climbed up to the top of the clock tower of the Royal Palace of
Bagrad, I could hear nothing at all. Hence, when I finally reached the
window at the top, I simply climbed in through it and walked over to the
gem set in the front of the main hall. Grabbing the gem, I ran back to
the window, only to be grabbed from behind by a guard and dragged off to
see the Crown Prince of Bagrad.
?You!? he shouted. ?You must be Sinbad, the infamous sailor, for only
he could be fool enough to try and steal the ruby from my tower!?
The guards forced me to kneel before him.
?Sinbad,? the Prince said, ?I have a mission for you, whose success will
absolve you legally of any guilt in the theft. You are to undertake the
voyage to the Island of Nowhere and bring back the item called Nothing.?
He then had the guards take me to a cell where I spent the night in
relative comfort. Before the Crown Prince left the cell, though, he
forced my mouth open and fed me the essence of the Demon Lady Abalone,
formerly a human queen and ruler of Bagrad centuries earlier who?d
destroyed the city of her old enemy and had then been transformed into a
demon for that act of cruelty. Laying my head down on the pillow of the
cot, I closed my eyes and smiled as I went off to Dreamland.

I dreamed I was standing on a beach outside Bagrad; the moon was full,
and the stars were bright. A shadow near me formed into the shape of a
powerfully built lady. Her skin was jet black; her eyes were red and
her pupils were slitted; her hair was white, and on her bosom she wore
two abalone shells.
?My queen!? I said, bowing low quickly.
?So... you are my host!? Abalone hissed, as if eager to kill me, and I
nodded.
?I can make your voyage easy, for I just happen to know where Nowhere is
located!?
I?d rather die than learn anything from you!? I retorted, and she
scowled and said:
?Well, die, then ? I shan?t stop you!?
And then I woke up; sunlight was in my face, and I blinked and sat up on
the cot.

Before heading out to my ship, I was given an ornate bracelet that I
placed on my arm, for the Crown Prince had told me it would protect me
from Abalone?s evil nature. I was then taken to the pier, where I met
my new crew, that of the royal yacht, which the Prince himself was
letting me use for the trip. My brother had turned to the shadow last
year, so nobody came to see me off. I stepped onto the ship feeling
certain I wouldn?t come home again. As we left the harbour, I waved
goodbye to the Crown Prince, but he didn?t wave back at all.

?Well, here I am on the high seas,? I said to myself, ?with no knowledge
at all of how to captain a ship except for tales I?ve heard of Sinbad.?
Walking onto the deck from the Prince?s cabin, I went to a railing and
looked at the water below. It was beautiful, and I watched as a group
of seashells floated by inside a cloud of foam. The next minute, I saw
a huge shark swim past the vessel, itself a beautiful animal. I could
easily see why Sinbad loved the sea so much. I told a tall woman who
was the Prince?s first officer:
?If only we had a chart to guide us to the Island of Nowhere, this quest
would be easier!?
?The island is known by me to exist,? she replied, ?and my name?s
Shallamayne, by the way.?
?That?s a lovely name!? I said.
?Thank you!? she replied. ?Now, we must go and look at the Prince?s
latest charts.?
We went belowdecks and examined the Crown Prince?s charts. When we
looked at every possible island on those charts, we found one island
that stood out, for it was shaped like a giant crab. It was the only
island with no name on the chart, so I assumed I was looking at the Isle
of Nowhere. Pointing to the nameless island, I said:
?I think we?ve found our island!?
?I was wondering when you?d figure it out!? Shallamayne replied. ?The
Prince located that island on his last voyage, so he drew it on the
charts; he calls it ?Nowhere? because that island was, in fact, made by
man centuries ago. It?s a completely artificial island.?
?Then, we?ve got to set course for that island immediately, if not
sooner!? I replied.
?I?ll give the order right away!? she replied, then hurried off in
order to do so.
Soon, the great vessel was on course toward the Island of Nowhere
itself. As we approached the island, and it came up in our sights, I
was amazed by its appearance, for it greatly resembled a giant craft in
its own right. I had the ship whey anchor in front of the harbour, and
then we descended to the sea in a small boat kept aboard the yacht for
that very purpose.
?The Island of Nowhere looks weird!? I commented as I waited until the
small boat touched down on the solid shore for the mysterious island,
then led the way off the boat onto the island.
?Incredible!? said an officer, whose name, I?d learned, was Aggrabah, a
former gladiator who now kept the saiils of the royal yacht in trim.
?Yes, it is, Aggrabah!? I replied. ?Never have I seen an island which
is so bizarre-looking. You?re right, though; it does have its own
charms.?
We then headed out onto the shore of the island itself. The surface of
the island was made entirely of concrete several meters thich, although
I could see what appeared to be trees and other forms of plant life
behind the central building of the Island of Nowhere. I said:
?That central building?s where we?ll probably find Nothing ? that is, if
it exists at all!?
?Let?s go!? Aggrabah and Shallamayne cried.
The three of us hurried toward the central building ? only to find
ourselves beset by the statues that stood in front of it, which suddenly
came alive and attacked us. Using my slingshot, I fired small rocks at
the ?statues? while Aggrabah and Shallamayne drew shamshirs and fought
back against them. One of the rocks I shot at the ?statues? hit one of
them on the forehead and knocked him down. As he collapsed to the
ground, I saw part of his skull split in two, revealing a mechanical
brain inside it. Amazed, I shouted out to the others:
?They?re mechanical ? and they can be hit in the head a d knocked over
on their side!?
Leaping over a ?statue? as it attacked him, Aggrabah stove in the head
of a third statue. My own stones dropped two more of the metal giants.
Finally, when all of the ?statues? were down, we hurried toward the main
building ? only to find the main entrance door firmly shut. I asked the
others:
?NOW what??
?We must get through the door!? Shallamayne replied, and she thrust her
fist through a panel on one side of the door, causing it to slide open,
at which point we entered the main building. There, we found a bunch of
skeletons in the entry room, all of them pointing toward the door itself
? human skeletons., all of them pointing toward the door itself ? human
skeletons., evidently those of the island?s natives. There was an
archway nearby, so we ran through its wide expanse. The room beyond the
archway was a feast hall ? empty now, but evidently at one time very
busy. I asked Aggrabah:
?What kind of place is this??
?I only wish I knew!? he replied, and I could here Abalone cackling in
my head.
?The island?s a place from the past, before the Robot War - and the
Negabomb that stopped it! - decimated civilization as we once knew it.?
We passed through the feast hall into another large chamber, this one
containing a large glass tube that had a woman curled up inside it, clad
in a form-fitting black leotard and with dark hair and skin; her eyes
were closed, as she was dormant, but having been a lover of art for many
years, I knew exactly who she was.
?This is the Bakhivad Ghita, the masterpiece of a legendary inventor,
whose body incorporated all of his other inventions as well!?
Using my staff, I shattered the glass as the others battled the
?statues.? Eventually, after the others had finished off the ?statues,?
I allowed Milady to open her eyes and come awake.
?How are you?? I asked her he softly, and she replied:
?Very well, thank you! It?s been a long time since I was awake and
walking the streets of this island!?
The four of us headed, with the Ghita leading the way, into the wooded
area which the Ghita called the Arboretum. There, we cut dead branches
from some of the now overgrown bushes and used them to build a signal
fire for the rest of our crew. Abalone hissed:
*You?ve accomplished nothing!*
?I have found nothing!? I replied, and she said:
*That?s precisely what I mean!* she replied. *I was joking, don?t you
see? Since the Ghita?s the item you require, she?s Nothing!*
?QUIET!? I shouted, shocking my two new friends. Aggrabah asked me:
?Who are you talking to??l
?Abalone!? I replied. ?Her sole desire is to take over my body and
turn it into a copy of her own!?
I then lit the dead branches, and Shallamayne hunted for food for our
fire. Unfortunately, the fire had also attracted others to the area ?
we were surrounded by wolves within a few minutes! Aggrabah and I drew
our weapons and fought them off, my stones killing several of the wolves
right away. Enraged, the pack leader attacked me, jumping on top of me
and causing me to fall bodily over the fire, with my left leg in the
flames. I shouted as I felt pain surge through my leg:
?Damn you all to Hell!?
*Draw on my strength to free yourself!* Abalone said.
I did just that, grabbing the wolf and hurling him over my head into his
packmates before limping over to Shallamayne and the Ghita, both of whom
were fighting the wolves themselves.
?Ghita?? I asked, and she replied:
?Look in the central lake for a weapon.?
Running over to the central lake, I found a sword lying at bottom.
Diving into the lake, I tapped into Abalone?s strength again and swam
down to the sword, then brought it up from the depths of the lake.
Runnng back into the battle despite my burns, I used the sword to attack
the wolves. Its long blade sliced the head off of a wolf as I slowly
swung it in battle.
*Draw upon my skill in battle!* Abalone shouted from the depths of my
mind.
?Who d?you think you are, lady?? I asked, and she replied:
?I am Abalone Tridachna, Demon Lady and former Queen of the nation of
Bagrad!*
?Very well!? I said, and suddenly I found the strength and courage to
wield the sword skillfully. Even the Ghita was amazed as I fought the
wolves wth an uncanny skill and abandon. When the last wolf had fallen,
we hurried to the infirmary, where I got onto a table and lay down in
order to allow the Ghita to treat the burns in my leg A quick jab of
the needle, and I went out iike a light. I found myself in a royal
palace; following the red carpet thru a long hallway, I turned left and
then entered the throne room. There was Abalone on the throne, just as
she?d been in days of yore.
?Fancy meeting you here!? I said, and she replied:
?Yes, fancy that! This was my throne room when I was Queen of Bagrad.?
?Do you know where the real Sinbad is?? I asked Abalone, who smiled and
said
?I do, and he?s just fine. He?s iiving in Bagrad and has now retired
from the sea.?
?Thank you, Abalone!? I replied. ?We must escape from this awful island
with the Bakhivad Ghita alive - she?s the object of our quest.?
?I know!? Abalone replied. ?She?s a living, breathing work of art.
Intelligent, too: her artificial brain was quite unique back in the
day.?
?I?m willing to do whatever you need of me, in return for the safety of
my ship and my crew!? I replied, then I reached out my hands, which she
took in her own clawed hands. She said:
?Then let the two of us become one!?
?Agreed!? I replied, and seconds later, I again awoke and found myself
in a recovery room.
?Good morning, Captain!? Shellandra said, and the Ghita added.
?Hello! How do you do??
Both girls then joined hands and laughed heartily. All of a sudden I
felt power surge through me as I rose to a sittng position and said:
?I feel much better now, but... ooo... I feel like something?s happening
to me ? something I MUST prevent from happening... at all...!?
?Her eyes!? cried Aggrabah. ?They?re RED!?
?I must stop... the transformation... but it... it feels... so... GOOD!?
All of a sudden, I began to grow, tearing out of my clothes and flinging
off my cloak and hood.
?No ... I must fight... must stop this... but I can?t ... it?s just
too much... TOO MUCH... POWER-R-R-R!?
Even as I spoke, my muscles continued to swell with power, and right
before my crewmates? eyes, my skin turned black and my hair grew longer
and turned a bright white; horns sprouted from my forehead.
Rising to my feet, I smiled and said:
?By the time you met Carrana Kor, it was aleady too late: she?d been
infected with my immortal essence by Crown Prince Kallufax of Bagrad.
The bracelet didn?t work: the erger of myself and Carrana?s now
complete.?
?Complete!? Shellandra and Aggrabah cried.
?Yes!?I cried. ?We who were two are now one. I... am... ABALONE!?
?Then we go back?? Aggrabah asked me, and I replied:
?Yes, we go back! We return to Bagrad, where all this began, by going
around the outer edge of the island itself. Only then can we return to
our homeland and stop the Prince from using the Bakhivad Ghita against
his own people or his enemies. If only I could kill him myself ? but I
can?t. My demon master has barred me from ever turning against my blood
descendants, who rule Bagrad.?
We then headed to the other side of the island, but, when we reached the
door leading outside of the prison building, it slid shut. When I
attempted to tear the door open, it wouldn?t budge an inch despite my
massively enhanced strength. Then we heard a loud cackle coming out of
nowhere, and the room filled with the walking statues as a male voice
shouted:
?So, you thought I was unaware of your presence, did you? Well, you
were wrong! I am Khuvvaden, the master of the Isle of Nowhere, and
you?re all just fleas for me to swat from my home!?
?Merciful Allah!? Aggrabah cried, and Shallamayne shouted:
?We cannot fight this many statues!?
I smiled at her and shouted:
?Then we must retreat!?
We all fell back to the door on the other side of the room as a man?s
face appeared on a screen above the exit door. Khuvvaden shouted:
?There they are, my statues! Kill them all, and when you do, I?ll see
to it you?re never disturbed again! No one comes to the Isle of Nowhere
and gets away with the Bakhivad Ghita!?
?Khuvvaden, you crazy monster!? Ghita cried. ?Have you forgotten who
you?re talking to? I have my own set of powers, and I?ll use them
should your statues attack me and force me to do so. You will let us
pass or face the consequences!?
?NEVER!? shouted Khuvvaden.
?Then, you?ve sealed your own fate!? she replied.
And she let out a sonic blast from her mouth that shattered the screen
and smashed the machinery behind it. She leaped through the screen and
the torn hole in the wall behind it. We followed her to the seashore
and then headed around the side of the island to the yacht, with the
statues in hot pursuit. As we leaped abpard the vessel, I gave the
order to cast off, and the yacht unfurled its sails, and at that time we
sailed away from the island back to Bagrad.

As the yacht pulled into port, we waved to the people on the shores of
Bagrad. The yacht slid into the dock, at which time we dismebarked from
the yacht. Then, we were escorted back to the palace by the Prince?s
royal guard, along with the Bakhivad Ghita. The Ghita had never seen
such splendour before, and she was in awe as we walked down the red
carpet into the throne room. There, we again met Prince Khallufax. I
said:
?As you can see, my descendant, we?ve been to Nowhere and brought back
the lady known as Nothing ? the Bakhivad Ghita back, as you have
commanded us to do.?
?Yes, Abalone, I can see that!? he said, then rose from his throne and
walked over to the Bakhivad Ghita, then said to her:
?I offer you my hand in marriage, Ghita!?
As he put his hand on her shoulder, she grabbed his wrist and
administered a electrical shock, then watched as he did a war dance
from that shock for a few minutes before turning off the power.
?Never do that without my consent again!? she shouted angrily as she
slapped his cheek.
?If I could kill you right now, my descendant,? I told the Prince, ?I?d
gladly do so!?
?Then away to the dungeon you all must go, except for the Bakhivad
Ghita!? the Prince cried, and his guards then took us to the royal
dungeon underneath the palace itself.
?We?re trapped like rats!? Shellandra cried, and I said:
?You?re forgetting the Ghita has powers of her own, and can easily take
good care of herself. She?ll know what to do when and if the Prince
tries to harm her in any way.?

As I?d expected, the situation wasn?t as bad as Shellandra and Aggrabah
feared. The Prince gave Ghita a large ornate necklace and said:
?This, Ghita, is a gift from me to you!?
The two of them were standing in the palace?s courtyard, or so she told
me later, when he grabbed the Ghita and tried to kiss her as she put on
the necklace. She easily threw him over her head and then grabbed him
by the arms, then teleported him to a tropical paradise. He shouted:
?Return me to my home, Ghita ? NOW!?
?Who is that ugly man?? one native asked, and the Prince replied:
?I am the Crown Prince of Bagrad!?
?Not here, you?re not!? she replied. ?In fact, I don?t want to see you
ever, ever again!?
?Clearly, this tropical paradise isn?t your home!? Ghita commented,
then teleported them both to the centre of an erupting volcano, several
of whose inhabitants ? all lower rank demons ? drew back in horror from
the Prince, and their leader said to the Ghita:
?That man?s so evil, my demons are all deathly afraid of him, as am I.
Ghita, you must take him away from this volcano!?
?Clearly, this is not your home, either!?
She then teleported herself and the Prince to an abandoned cabin in the
middle of a giant forest far away from Bagrad, then said:
?Here is your home ? a cabin out in the wilderness. This is the place
where you begin a brand new life far away from Bagrad, and far away from
me, as long as you shall live!?
?My home is the Palace of Bagrad!? the Prince cried, but the Ghita
replied:
?And I can never, ever let you return there!?
She then teleported back to the palace on her own and led me to the
throne.
?Thank you, Ghita!? I said, and she asked me:
?Why can?t you harm your own family??
?Because whenever I try to do so, my muscles lock and my body always
freezes where I?m standing. In fact, that was how I was captured by my
own daughter and my original body destroyed. I was so lucky to have
found Carrana Kor, I can hardly believe it!?
?All hail Queen Abalone!? Ghita cried.
?Indeed!? I said as I smiled at her and relaxed on the throne. ?And,
this time around, I?ll be more merciful, for I still have a lot of
Carrana Kor in me!?
?You?ll rule justly and honourably?? GHita asked, and I replied:
?Of course, I will! You?re na?ve, Ghita, if you believe all demons are
evil. I?m a krumbic Demon, on?e of the Guardians of Bagrad, who were
long ago left by the people on this good old world of ours to protect
the people from any and all evil!?
?Thank you for telling me!? the Ghita replied.
?Will you help me, Ghita?? I asked her, and she replied:
?I will indeed, Abalone!? she replied.
* * *
That night, a great feast was held by me to celebrate my return to
power.
?This food?s wonderful, Abalone!? said Aggrabah, and I replied:
?Nothing for the best for my crew!?
?And for me, I hope?? Sinbad asked as he entered the dining room and
lay down in a recliner. I smiled at him and said:
?Yes, and for you, too, Sinbad!?
Sinbad?s wife followed him into the room and also lay down on a
recliner. She cried:
?It?s a real honour to meet you, Ghita!?
?And you, too, Sinbad!? the Ghita replied, and Sinbad cried:
?Thank you, Ghita! Let?s sing the old fisherman?s song, ?I?s the B;y!?
?Yes, let?s!? I shouted eagerly, and as we ate our dinner, we all of us
sang:
?I?s the b?y that builds the boar,
And I?s the b?y that sails her;
I?s the b?y that catches the fish
And takes them home to Lisa!?
?And so mote it be!? I shouted.
?Hip your partner, Sally Tibboo,
Hip your parner, Sally Brown!

?And long may you reign, Abalone!? Ghita cried as she kissed me on the
