I was about to get into my car when I saw a tall woman begging for food.
I gave her my lunch and then went into my car, which I started before
driving off.
"Thank you, sir!" she said. "You'll be duly rewarded, for I am Jaa'Dhur,
a Star Beast."
As I drove to my conference, I swerved to avoid a speeder and lost
control of my moving car. I crashed through the siding and landed upside
down, causing the fuel to blow up. I screamed in pain as I died, but as
I breathed my last breath, the woman's voice said:
"Death has been stopped from consuming your soul. Enjoy your new life,
Professor Blake, for you new will be Anna Royce!"
And I found myself in a bedroom but not my bedroom: it was a room in
Mumford Hospital!
"I'm alive!" I thought. "Alive, alive, alive!"
Laughing, I got out of bed and turned on the radio. A woman's voice
spoke a news item:
"Professor George Blake, the world-famous author, died in an accident
while driving to the writer's conference in New York. His works include
Eternal Peace and The Pilgrim's Progress: Part III. He was 72 and is
survived by a wife, son, and two grandchildren."
"If my body died," I thought, "then who am I now - George Blake or Anna
Royce?"
I looked in the mirrir and saw that I'd become a girl! Opening the
closet, I put on some clothes, and left the house. On the street, I
hailed a taxi and, pulling an address slip out of my pocket, I told the
drive to go to that address. The cab brought me to a certain area of the
town I knew well from the old days - it was a posh, upper middle class
area where the families higher up on the social scale lived. Then he
parked the cab right in front of a house of grey brick. Leaping out of
the car, I paid him his fare from a purse I had on my person. When I
knocked on the door, a lady in a red blouse let me in and welcomed me
with open arms. I said:
"Um... hello there!"
"You must be my niece Anna! Your father's coming home from space, having
been forced to end his career as a Space Force officer early due to
having been injured during a Diodian attack. Come in, honeybunch, come
in - we've both been expecting you!"
She then brought me into the living room, and introduced me to my Uncle
Sidney Royce, a tall man with a big toothy smile and bright blue eyes.
"Ah, my niece, my niece!" he cried happily.
"Good to see ya!" I said quietly, a little unsure of myself or of how I'd
found myself in this position.
Sidney laughed as he took me upstairs to my room where, at his
insistence, I dressed in one of my aunt's old dresses for dinner. When
we came bac downstairs, we went immediately to the dining room, where
"my" aunt served us a wonderful steak dinner. I asked her:
"When is my papa due back?"
"Tonight after supper!" Uncle Sidney replied. "We hear he's on the first
shuttle back to earth."
Just as we were finishing our dinner, the phone rang and Aunt Whatsername
answered it.
"Oh, Arthur, it's you!" she shouted. "We've been expecting you to call
us from the shuttleport, big brother. If I didn't know you any better,
I'd swear you were deeply, deeply happy to be home again. We'll be
seeing you tnight, okay?"
After supper, we all waited in the living room for "Papa's" aircar.
Soon, it arrived at the house and dropped him off at the end of the
driveway. Eagerly, he pulled up to the front door and rang the bell.
"My" aunt answered it, and when a tall man entered, I was amazed when she
ran up and hugged him.
"You look great, Clara!" he said quietly, and she replied:
"And so do you, Artie-boy!"
"Papa?" I asked as I came up to him, and he shouted happily:
"Now, there's my little baby girl!"
"I just wish we could provide some central heating, but we can't!" Uncle
Sidney said. ""Our furnace has been red-flagged, and that means it can't
be fixed and will have to be torn down, Arthur, m'boy!"
"Don't worry about that!" Papa said. "The power source from my
shuttlecraft should keep your tootsies warm for years to come; I claimed
it as my own when I formally left the Space Force."
"That sounds wonderful!" Aunt Clara cried, and Uncle Sidney added:
"It's a done deal, Arthur!"
"Excellent!" Arthur replied. "I'll have it brought here tomorrow
morning."
"WOW!" I shouted happily, and Clara said:
"Time for you to go to bed, Anna!"

The next morning, two workmen came over to our home and entered the
basement. There, they cut the tank for the old furnace in half and took
each half outside before draining out the leftover oil from each half of
the tank. After they'd gone, I breakfasted on shredded wheat and French
toast, and as we were finishing our meal, an air hauler landed near our
home. Two robots brought the new power source for our home off the
hauler, after which they entered the basement and installed it in the
house. It was Aunt Clara who reactivated the reactor, using a switch on
the far wall. All at oncem the reactir hummed with power, and I saw the
outline of a lady inside its oval shell. Almost immediately, we heard a
pounding noise coming from the reactor's interior. I wondered what was
going on here.
"There'll be a party here tonight to celebrate your homecoming, Arthur!"
Aunt Clara cried.
"That'd be wonderful, Clara!" he cried eagerly.

That night, the neighbours came to our home and eagerly tramped into the
basement area to see the new reactor. The pounding now had grown louder,
and I could see a dent appear in the side of the reactor's shell. All of
a sudden, a lady's leg burst forth from the reactor's side, and then a
fist shot through the top. The shell was torn apart from the inside, and
the lady I'd seen in my dream earlier climbed out of the reactor.
Walking toward Papa, she grabbed him, then lifted him off his feet and
said in an angry voice:
"You're not the first person to think they can tap Jaa'Dhur's power!"
Setting hiim back down on his feet, Jaa'Dhur headed for the stairs. I
told her:
"I remember you from my dream, Jaa'Dhur!"
"And I remember you, too, Anna!" she said calmly.
"And now?" I asked her softly.
"Stay put, Anna, please! I'll return for you very, very soon. As for
your family here, I will see them again later as well. Right now, I must
leav you and go my own way!"
She then walked upstairs, then I heard her open the door and walk through
it, easily leaping down the front steps to the ground, before running
away from the area. Sidney asked Arthur:
"Who the hell was that?"
Arthur sighed and said in a soft voice:
"That was Jaa'Dhur, an alien entity of very great power. We were very
lucky she didn't tear our heads off for what I did to her."
"What YOU did to her?" Clara asked him.
"Yes, my crewmates and I found her in the Massaughi System, unconscious.
We knew her energied could power out shuttlecraft indefinitely, so we
placed her in the shell of its fusion reactor, and the trick worked - we
were able to get back to base again, and I received medical treatment for
my injuries. I can't go back into space again, of course, but I can
hopefully find a job here on Earth to support you, Anna, and fund your
education."
"We can do that, Arthur!" Clara cried, and Papa said:
"She's my little baby girl!"
"So she is!" Uncle Sidney replied.

Uncle Sidney came to me the next morning, after the replacement reactor
had been installed.
"D'you know what I do for a living, Anna?" he asked me, and I replied:
"No, I don't know what you do for a living."
"I run a model agency for young people, Anna, and I'd like you to enroll.
When you've signed with me, I'll pay for your future education and see to
it your mom's debts are paid!"
He then handed me an appliucation form which I signed on the dotted line.
He himself then signed the application form as my witness, and told me:
"Now that's done, your traiing as a model will begin immediately."
And what hard work it was! I worked for weeks after school to improve my
posture, bearing and poise. Every evening, I worked out with light
weights, and every morning I'd jog about a mile. I was given good food
three times a day with Papa close beside me and, on the weekends, I took
kick-boxing lessons to build up the stamina I'd need for my photo shoots.
All through this training period, I felt as if I could do far more than
what I was doing. It wasn't till after her initial training was
completed successfully that I had my first shoot, located at Cheddar
Gorge in East Essex, England.
"That's it!" the photographer said. "Good! Excellent, Miss Royce!
You're doing very well!"
"It's as if I've been photographed before!" she said to herself. "But, I
don't remember ever being photographed for any reason. How is it I'm
easily following this man's orders for this shoot/"
After the shoot was complete, I walked back to my trailer, where I lay
down on the bed. Again. She dreamed she was being lowered into some sort
of tank, and that a mask was put on her face, at which point the tank was
closed and sealed shut. She always woke up screaming at that moment.
"Who am I?" I wondered as I curled up in my bed on the pillow. "WHO AM
I?"

At that very moment, the Chief of the Secret Service called agent Foxton
and said:
"I've just learned that a test subject for a retrovirus program at
Mumford University hospital has escaped from his hospital room, taking
with him the purse of Nurse Henderson, who'd left it in the hospital
room. Therefore, I'm assigning you to the case. Don't fail me, Foxton!"
"I'll get right on it, Chief!" Foxton replied. And the Chief said:
"See to it that you do!"

Upon returning home from my first shoot, I entered my bedroom and opened
the purse I'd taken from the place I'd escaped from weeks earlier.
Looking in the urse, I found a driver's license with the name Sally
Henderson on it, as well as her picture. Uncle Sidney came into my room
and said quietly:
"Are you feeling okay, Anna/"
"Yeah, I am, Uncle Sidney!" I replied.
The two of us went down to supper where Aunt Clara served us a luscious
meal of chili concarne. The chili was delicious, if a little spicy, and
I loved every little bit of it!
"Say, how was your shoot today?" Aunt Clara asked me, and I said:
"It was wonderfuly, but I had that bad dream again - the one where I was
lowered into a cylinder and a mask was put over my face!"
"it was just a dream, Anna!" Uncle Sidney said, and then Papa nodded and
said:
"That dream can't hurt you, Honeybunch!"
"I know," I replied, "but it is very scary!"

Agent Foxton went directly to Mumford University, where the head of the
retrovirus project showed her a film of the retrovirus experiment. In
it, the aged and ailing Markus King was lowered into a cylinder about ten
feet long, which was filled with a nutrient solution. A mask was
strapped over his mouth and nose, then a mild electric charge was used to
stimulate the retrovirus into action. Before Foxton's eyes, Markus
appeared to shrink, devolving into the form of a baby girl, then growing
into the form of an adorable little girl. Foxton asked Dr, Edglington, a
tall slender woman in her forties, and she immediately nodded and said:
"Yes, for when the retrovirus destroyed Markus King's bodily impurities,
it also destroyed his original male gender, for it mistook his Y
chromosome as an impurity and replaced it with an X chromosome. Please,
Ms. Foxon, you must find Markus and bring him - her, now - back to us
before she discovers that the retrovirus had side effect that could be
dangerous to others!"

The next morning, I arrived at the beach on the west side of town for my
next photo shoot. I did about 10 pictures this time for starters, then
rested in a lawn chair Uncle Sidney got for me. As I relaxed in the chair
and read a good book, a man came up to me and said with a sneer:
"What's a little girl like you doin' here alone on a great big sandy
beach like this one?"
"I'm a model on a shoot!" I replied. He said:
"Well, then I'll thank you to get off my property!"
He grabbed me by the arm, and I cried:
"LEAVE ME ALONE!"
"No, I won't, you little trespasser!" he shouted.
He then dragged me right in front of the photographer who was involved in
the shoot.
"LET ME GO!" I cried as the photographer came running up to us and said:
"We didn't know it was your land, sir - honest!"
"Even so, I want you all off my land - NOW!" the man retorted.
Angered by the man's hostile behaviour, I pushed back against him and
found myself lifting him into the air. We then resumed the shoot, and
were able to finish the modeling session. I was later told that some of
the shots would be used for a magazine called Kid's Jungle Bungles. I
was delighted that my image could make so many children so very happy,
and so I was eager to see the finished result.

When the magazine came out at the end of the month, Agen Foxton bought
an issue for her young niece, and was stunned to find a photo of Markus
King on the front cover, reclining in a big lounge chair on the beach in
a purple swimsuit.
"She's changed somewhat, probably due to the harsh training reginmen
she's undergone," Foxton mused, "for she's filled out a little and her
colour's improved. I can even see they've styled her hair in a perm!"
She immediately contacted the model agency involved with the shoot
itself, and soon found herself talking to Sidney Royce himself. To her
surprise, she learned that the girl in question was named Anna Royce and
that she was Sidney's niece. He told Foxton:
"She's a good, sweet girl - intelligent, able to do as she's told. We've
already had two successful shoots with Anna."
"I'd like to meet her some time!" Foxton replied, and he said:
"You can, if you come around to my place!"
He then terminated the call - and Foxton saw to it that the call was
traced to Royce's address.
"25 North Main Street!" she said to herself when she learned the result
of the call trace. "I have a feeling Sidney Royce has much to answer
for!"
She then contacted the Chief, who said:
"Good work, Foxton! sidney Royce is known to us as a former dealier in
pictures of naked kids. He's served his full sentence and has gone
legitimate, though the I.R.S. has questions about his taxes!"
"I suspect he's back in business, Chief!" she said.
"Then you know exactly how to follow through on this. Go to it, girl -
find Marcus King!"

Just as I was going to bed that night, I saw an image of Jaa-Dhur appear
before me. She said:
"I have seen your pictures in the magazine and now I mus warn you to be
careful what you are doing here. That magazine's not what you think it
is, Anna - it Is something wicked."
"Yeah, right!" I said. "And when I do my next photo shoot, it'll be for
King Kong!"
"I'm only thinking of your happiness, Anna!"
"Then leave me alone!" I cried angrily, and Jaa'Dhur replied:
"I will, then. But. Anna, I warn you you'll only be getting into more
trouble if you're allowed to continue on this path!"
"Well, BLEAHH to you!" I replied - and then she was gone.
As I climbed into my bed, I thought of what Jaa-Dhur had said: maybe I
would have trouble on this path, but it was my choice to walk it, for
better or worse.

Agent Foxton concealed herself in the bushes outside the window and
looked into the Royce home with binoculars. She saw "Anna" practising
how to walk with her head held high, walking in circles around the
spacious living room. She then took her bags and went out to school.
Foxton then got a search warrant for the house and served it on Clara
Royce, Sidney's wife, Sidney himself having gone to a shoot with another
model. The search turned up pictures of naked children on a series of
recordable DVDs. These were seized by Foxton and her fellow agents, who
took all of the pictures back to headquarters. Foxton also found some
ledgers that indicated Rouyce was indeed using other people, including
Clara and her brother Arthur - Anna's father - both of whom were taken
into custody immediately, as several of the properties used by Sidney
were actually owned by one or the other. This meant money sent by people
who rented them was thereby kept out of Uncle Sam's hands for good,
which was against the law, as he hadn't declared the rent money in his
tax statement to the IRS the previous year.
"Now the bastard will pay!" Foxton shouted, and when Sidney returned
home, he was placed in custody by Agent Foxton, who greeted Anna warmly
when she came home from school, before taking her away with her to
headquarters.

I was lucky Agent Foxton had found me, because if what she told me was
true, Sidney and Clara had been running a brisk business dealing in kids'
photos on the black market.
"Who are you really, girl?" she asked me when she brought me back to
headquarters.
"I am Anna Royce!" I cried, and she said:
"No, you're not - we found the real Anna Royce living in Canada - in
Ottawa, actually - far away from here, with her mother. They don't want
to be part of Arthur's life and have even changed their names to keep him
from finding them!"
"I WAS Geroge Blake, the novelist!" I replied. "Somehow or other, I ended
up in this body after my fatal car crash, Ms. Foxton."
"Impossible!" Foxton replied. "You can't be Geroge Blake - he's been
dead for weeks, in a car accident, true, but his body as immolated."
"Then, who am I?" I asked her, and at that moment, two men walked in,
bringing with them a giantess in handcuffs. Looking at her, I cried:
"JAA'DHUR!"
"Hello, little one!" Jaa'Dhur said softly.
"We found her just outside of the city, wearing Arthur Teale's best ever
business suit!" one of the men said, and Foxton told Jaa'Dhur:
"Your picture's been out all over the wires, ever since you made your
escape from the Royce house. You may be the only one who can tell us who
she really is!"
"She WAS Markus King!" Jaa'Dhur replied. "When I sensed her pain during
the retrovirus experiment, I planted a fantasy in her mind, during which
she lived the tragic death of George Blake, and I suppressed her
memories. Now I see that was the very worst thing I could've done for
her!"
She put her thumb on my forehead, and removed the memory block from my
mind.
"My goodness - I WAS Markus King!" I shouted. "Thanks for freeing my
mind, Jaa'Dhur!"
"Care to join us for another photo shoot?" Foxton asked me, and I nodded
and said:
"Anything to put those bums behind bars!"

For the last shoot of Uncle Sidney's schedule, we met with the
photographer, and he eagerly agreed to take my pictures. It was the same
man who'd taken the pictures for the magaine Jungle Bungles a few days
earlier. I posed for this man, shot after shot, each time obeying his
commands, posing as he asked me to. He shouted:
"Good! Good! Excellent work, Ms. Royce!"
When the shoot was complete, Ms Foxton arrested him immediately for his
complicity in the illicit child photo racket. I asked her:
"Did you see your pictures in the magazine yet?" she asked me, and en I
shook my head no, she showed the magazine to me. The pictures inside
it ll had my face, but the naked body was that of someone else! I asked
her:
"What was uncle Sidney playing at?"
She knelt before me and said:
"They already had these naked pictures of a girl who left the agency
because she's too old to continue there, and they couldn't use her face
because it was against the law. So, Uncle Sidney signed you up as a model
for the agency and, after the original shoot was a success, he cropped
out the other girl's face from the old ones and replaced it with yours!"
"And now he'll go to jail!" I cried, and she shouted:
"With your help, he will!"

Sidney Royce went to prison for a long time on charges of fraud (because
the face in the photos was replaced by mine), as did both Clara and
Arthur Royce, for their part in the tax fraud. Even the photographer
went to prison for five years for his part in the model racket.
"Good work, Foxton!" the Chief cried as both Jaa'Dhur and I looked on
very proudly. "You'll now be The Girl Behind the Badge!"
"And so am I!" I said proudly.
The Chief then handed me a citation for uncommon courage, and I took it
gladly.
"Thanks, Chief!" I said happily, and then I lifted him up onto my
shoulders.
"WOW!" Foxton cried when she saw this.
I put the Chief down, and he said:
"You did good work, kiddo!"
"Yes but you're way ahead of me!" I replied.
"Way, WAAAAAAY ahead!" he cried, and then everyone burst into joyous
laughter.
