"Are you a boy or a gerle?"
I had never considered this a difficult question before my girlfriend,
Julia, asked me it one evening.
Just as I had always considered myself male, apart from perhaps during a
few dress-up sessions with my sister Cara, (and who hasn't dressed up as
Supergirl or Wonderwoman for Halloween, right?) I had always considered
myself a boy, like my brother Pedro, and my sister Cara to be a girl.
But I tried to block those dress-up sessions out of my mind.
Sure, there were videos on Cara's YouTube page "I dress my brother as
Wonderwoman" and "I dress my brother up as Supergirl" but as I went to an
all boys Public School in London if anyone knew about those videos no-one
mentioned it. There is no more homophobic and transphobic an environment
than an English Public School. And I was captain of the first fifteen as
I was one of the toughest rugby players in my school and I was looking to
go to Oxford or Cambridge. No one at school would talk about those
videos and certainly not to you face.
Just as no one suggested that Tracey (my name) could be a girl's name.
That was not to say, although I did not know it at the time, that Julia
did not know about the videos. Julia was a feminist but she also was a
keen supporter of the transgender rights movement. She was known as "the
Professor", on account of her intellect, at the all girl's Public School
she attended. It was a term she struggled with as she considered it to
be gendered. There had been a debate between our schools about the
battle of the sexes. I had used a trap saying that I had often wondered
what it was like to be a girl and the girl debating me had fallen into
it, meaning as she asked why and I responded that I wondered what it was
like to be so inferior. It worked well, rhetorically, so we won the
battle, the debate, but lost the war.
Why was that? Well, something about how I said I wondered what it was
like to be a girl led Julia to look up boys dressing as Wonderwoman and
she found my sister's page. Julia then got in touch with Cara and told
her about the debate.
"It sounds like the school rugby captain needs to be taken down a peg or
two" said Cara. "It was one thing for me to dress him up as Supergirl or
Wonderwoman but how about getting him dressed as a girl, now he is the
school rugby captain? There's nothing more humiliating for a boy than to
dress as a girl."
"He would never do that again, though, would he?" Julia replied.
"You would be surprised how easily a bright young woman like you, Julia,
could exploit his psychological make up to get him into makeup," Cara
replied. "Despite what he said in the debate, Tracey was not expressing
his real opinion and he considers himself to be something of a feminist,
as he has told me, his big sister that he has been called a "social
justice warrior" and one of the "PC Police" by the guys he is at school
with."
"The term "guys" is such a gendered term," Julia said. "I hate it when
my girlfriends say things like "See you later guys" .... Don't they
understand that they are buying into a patriarchal and sexist concept
like the legal term "the everyday man"? We are women, not men. Why
can't "the everyday woman" be the gender neutral term?"
"Tracey was so easy to dress as Wonderwoman or Supergirl because he
identifies with female characters in films," Cara said. "You want to see
my brother in a bra and panties? He loves being the centre of attention
and acting so you need to put on a play."
"But what play will do that?" Julia replied.
"THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW!" they both said in unison. They plotted
what they were going to do next.
Julia persuaded her drama teacher to talk to my drama teacher about
putting on a play together. She said if they could get some of the boys
into fishnet stockings, it would help lift the spirits at their school
following their defeat in the debate.
The drama teacher agreed but asked how they could get a play put on and
the boys into fishnets before Julia said nonchalantly, "I don't know, why
don't you suggest "The Rocky Horror Picture Show"?"
Quite brilliant, the drama teacher had thought. We might not have lost
the debate if Julia had been on the team but this would stick it to the
boys.
My sister Cara, made arrangements to be Julia's maths tutor and
introduced me to Julia and after a few weeks we became boyfriend and
girlfriend.
Then it was announced that there would be a play put on by both our
schools. I wanted to audition. Julia said she had costumes and I should
come over to her house. She would do the makeup and her Mum would drive
us to the school. The play was being put on at Julia's school.
There were two black zipped up costume bags on her bed.
Julia said, "So Tracey, with your unisex name, tell me - Are you a boy or
a gerle?"
"What do you mean? I am a boy of course!" I replied.
"A boy, in Middle English, means a servant or a knave," Julia said
unzipping a French Maid's outfit. "This is the servant's costume.
Whereas a "gerle" in Middle English meant a young person or child. It
could be of either sex. The "gerle" in this play is called "Frank"."
Julia picked up her phone and started to film me. "Are you a boy or a
gerle, Tracey?"
"I am a gerle," I said. Not realising what I was about to let myself in
for.
"Do you want to dress as a boy or a gerle?"
"I want to dress as a gerle," I replied.
"Then this is the gerle's costume," Julia replied passing me the bag.
"Now, hurry up and get changed."
She turned off her camera.
I went to the bathroom whilst Julia said she would get changed in her
bedroom and her Mum would drive us to school.
Imagine my horror when I opened the bag to find a basque with suspenders
attached, panties, fishnet stockings, sparkly high heeled shoes and a
black cape. I realised I would need help putting on my basque and
suspenders but if I didn't want to be seen by Julia's Mum in the nude I
would need to put on my cape and panties.
I unzipped my trousers and let them fall to the floor. It felt like a
defeat. The school rugby team captain in panties. How was I going to
live this down? It was one thing my sister having posted the videos of
her little brother as Wonderwoman or Supergirl when I was 11 or 12 but I
was nearly 18 now.
I looked at myself in my panties in the mirror. Black lace and silk
panties. A gerle's costume?
I put the cape on and picked up my clothes and went to Julia's room.
"You look cute in your panties, Tracey, but I am going to have to
complete the job quickly!" said Julia, who was dressed as a French Maid.
I got hard.
"A gerle like you needs to look more like a girl than at her girl."
Julia admonished dropping a couple of ice cubes in my panties and helping
me into my basque.
I suddenly felt it hard to breathe as she started tying me into my basque
and noticing that Julia advised me to take shorter breathing so I would
feel more comfortable. Julia then rolled my stockings up my legs and
fastened them to my suspenders and helped me into my new 6 inch heeled
shoes.
"You're going to need to practice walking, before you can dance," Julia
said as I wobbled to my feet. Being dressed as a girl was not new to me
but heels were. Somehow I managed to avoid twisting my ankle as I
stumbled around before Julia's mother knocked on the door, came in and
took a picture of me.
"I am sending it to your mother and sister," she said.
Great.
Just what every boy needs. His mother and sister seeing him dressed as a
girl. I might consider myself a bit of a feminist but I thought I could
draw the line at dressing as a woman.
"Time to do your makeup," Julia said as she sat me by her dressing table
and started plucking my eyebrows.
Then she painted my face.
Apart from my hair I looked like a girl now.
I started to panic. What would Julia's neighbours think if they saw a
boy come out of her house dressed in a girl's underwear and makeup?
Julia could see I was panicking and told me to calm down. She showed me
a little black dress and said, "Relax, you will be wearing a wig. You
mastered your heels quickly, no one will notice."
The dress it turned out was a top and shots but the shorts were designed
to look like a miniskirt. The blonde wig was an unmistakably feminine
look as it was curled and went down to my hips.
I had thought I would be seen and ridiculed leaving Julia's house but her
Mum drove us to the school without anything happening.
It wasn't the same when we got there though.
"I see you have brought a new gerle, Julia," said the drama teacher,
looking like a cat who had got the cream. "What's her name?"
"This is Tracey, Captain of the boy's school rugby team."
"Captain of the rugby team! The most macho boy in the school is now one
of the gerles? That's got to go in the program," the drama teacher said
triumphantly.
I wasn't sure what I thought of this, sure in Middle English I am a gerle
but in modern English?
