The darkness.
All we have as men is the night now...
Once upon a time there had been a river. A meandering river which became
known as La Bonne. At first my town had been just a village by the sea
but gradually, because it was well served by La Bonne, a town sprung up,
with all the vices, including the world's oldest profession, associated
with a seaport.
La Bonne had been teaming with life then, taking traders and goods far
inland, people swam and fished in her. She had been free and easy,
lending herself to all who used her.
These days, with the pollution from the factories, you no longer saw
fishing nets suspended over poles by the riverside and people no longer
swam in La Bonne.
Sure the town still saw boats but these were seagoing vessels that
transported goods overseas rather than inland and river going boats were
rarely seen as the transport of goods was now done by road.
La Bonne was neglected now and people rarely visited her, as if they were
ashamed of how she had been treated and turned essentially into a sewer.
The beauty of her youth and the old ways had been forgotten.
As far as I am aware the sexual revolution started in our town when Megan
moved into an old townhouse on the Southbank of the river from New York,
there were rumours that her ex-girlfriend, the hostess of a popular TV
show in the US, and from whom she had split back in the summer of 2013,
had been born male but that she had feminised him. She had a new
girlfriend living with her now, called Vicky, and no one believed that a
bearded woman like Vicky, who couldn't even walk properly in heels, had
been born female. Hell even Vicky's voice sounded like a man trying to
sound like a woman.
Next there was Riane who lived just north of the river, it was said she
had a husband called Sam who had been an Office worker, he had changed
his name to Samantha and run off with a wealthy businessman called John
at the end of 2013. She had had twins, shortly after Sam left her, one
was meant to be a boy and the other a girl but she insisted she was
bringing them up gender neutral and she dressed them both as girls.
There were rumours that Megan had not been the first to feminise her
boyfriend or husband and that there had been an accountant whose name I
did not know and his wife, who I think was called Mylene, had invited him
to take some sort of test which led to him becoming something of a
feminist cheerleader back in 2006. Mylene and her wife, the accountant,
lived a few doors down and across the street from Megan.
It was also said that the author Magenta, who was something of a
celebrity, lived with her girlfriend Janet in a flat by the river, had
Magenta had once been a man called Bill and that that change took place
at around the same time. There was even a rumour that George, the Mayor
of our town, had spent part of his university years as a cheerleader in
the mid-noughties as a result of some battle of the sexes style bet he
had rushed into....They say only fools rush in.
Yes even I had once lived a normal straight heterosexual life until I
started wearing earrings. I used to be known as "Peter" but don't go go
chasing the dead, I'm Portia now, my Dad's now called Samantha and my son
is called Michelle.
Gradually as the years wore on, more and more of the men in our town
started to see things differently and to consider their masculinity a
construct or pretence and to live their lives as women either having
gender reassignment surgery or simply dressing as women.
The reality was that the town's brothels needed sex workers and with the
hostile environment one of the country's first female Secretaries of
State for the Home Department created and with the anti-immigrant frenzy
that had gripped the country since then the sex workers had increasingly
become more indigenous. This, of course, meant they were usually
someone's mother, sister, daughter or granddaughter and the women of our
country no longer saw the need to work in such a profession which meant
that someone else had to - the men, those who had or had not had gender
reassignment surgery - those who could not find work anywhere else but
the bars or the sex trade.
I now worked in a brothel called Kismet on the street of the Cauldron
makers. I only have occasional contact with my daughter Michelle as she
works as an Escort as she is prettier and better at passing for a
cisgender woman than I am. I don't therefore see her, my ex-wife or
Philippa or Nicole all that often and spend most of my day on my back.
My father, who prefers me to call her my second mother, Samantha was too
old to work like I do but she and my mother Marilyn run another brothel

Last Sunday, at 2 am when trade had died, I walked across the street to
see my two mothers. I was wearing my favourite purple corset with the
black trim and the eight suspender straps and matching panties, my
garters and fishnet stockings and some new matching stilettos I had just
bought that I wanted to show my mums. I was also wearing my favourite
gold hoop earrings.
"Of course Bill was wearing lipstick and nail polish that time Nicole and
Philippa first put lipstick and nail polish on me," said Samantha. "And
your mother and I thought your cousin, Karen, would have him dressed like
me, you and Michelle but I don't know if Bill was just more stubborn or
forceful, you know, a man's man, or if Karen just preferred him that way
but he took his lipstick and nail polish off and, as far as I know, Bill
