Escape from the Tower by Angela Collins
(A fiction loosely based on the true story of William Maxwell, 5th Earl
of Nithsdale's escape from the Tower of London in February, 1716)
My husband, William, had been arrested and taken to the Tower of London.
After a summery trial for his part in the so called 'Jacobite Rebellion'
and proclaiming James Edward Stuart as the rightful king of Scotland, he
was condemned to death by hanging. I, as his dutiful and loving wife,
could not possibly accept this and tried, in vain, to seek audience with
the king in order to secure his release or a postponement to his
execution.
This was refused to me, so I had no possible course of action but to
effect his escape by any means available to me.
My husband is not a particularly tall or overbearing man and it came to
me that if his guards were drunk enough, they might not recognise him, if
he was dressed as a woman. Indeed, my ladies maid was of similar stature
and this got me thinking that I might be able to substitute one for the
other.
I summoned her to my chamber and explained my idea to her. She did not
seem overly keen on the idea, putting forward the nonsensical argument
about what might happen to her when it was discovered the Master has
escaped. I told her that they would be so ashamed at having been fooled
that they would let her go. Of course, I did not know this for a fact,
but what did it matter; she was only a servant girl and should actually
be quite prepared to die, if necessary, for her master's good.
I ordered her to try on some of his clothes and was delighted to find out
that they fitted her quite well. We experimented with charcoal on her
face to form side burns and make her face more masculine looking and more
to resemble his. After a few hours we had achieved a reasonably similar
look for her and I was feeling highly pleased with the results.
I found a wig similar to her hair length and colour and also acquired the
right make up in order to disguise his face to be similar to hers.
I knew that, as his wife I would be allowed to visit him the night before
his execution, so I got together a few trusted loyal women friends of
mine and persuaded them to join the plot. There would be five of us
altogether in the party, which should provide enough of a diversion for
the guards not to notice the maid in the middle.
I had hired a room nearby the Tower, to which we would take my husband.
We would wait there a few days and then make our way to the south coast
and thence to France.
I had pre-arranged for the guards to have plenty of ale delivered to them
well prior to our arrival and was glad to see that they had heavily
indulged in it by the time my party arrived. There were a few ribald
remarks, which we ladies ignored, after which we were taken to my
husband's quarters and locked in. There was no panel in the door for the
guards to see in and we were told to knock on the door when we wanted to
leave. He had carefully counted five ladies in. I was surprised the
imbecile could count to five, but still it served my purpose.
Once the door was closed, we wasted no time in explaining the plot to
William and initially he was horrified at the thought of wearing women's
clothes. However, when I told him it was that or die in the morning he
became a lot more amenable. The ladies turned their backs and my maid
started to undress as well. They handed each other their underwear and
she had to explain to him how some of it was worn. I particularly enjoyed
seeing him trussed up in her corset and made sure it was done up as
tightly as possible. In doing so, it amazed me to see that an almost
realistic cleavage was formed and by adding a bit of padding underneath
it would certainly survive a passing scrutiny. His dress was fairly
plain, as befitting his new station in life, as my maid.
His makeup was done and the wig placed on his head. While I sorted out my
former maid's disguise, the other ladies briefed him on how 'she' should
behave. I could hear him objecting to address them as 'mistress' and
having to bob a curtsy each time he had to acknowledge a command.
I turned to him and told him sharply, "You better do as you're told,
girl, or you'll be in big trouble."
He started to say something and I continued "The only thing I want to
hear from you is 'Yes, mistress.' Is that understood?"
"Yes," he replied.
"Yes, WHAT?" I answered, raising my voice.
"Yes, Mistress," he said.
"AND," I admonished.
He bobbed a curtsey.
"Good girl," I praised.
Somehow, I was enjoying the reversed roles. With him in a maid's garb, he
was now my inferior and it felt wonderful to have him defer to me rather
than the other way round. I would enjoy this, while it lasted.
The 'new' William sat with his back to the door as I knocked on the door
to be let out. I put on a bit of a display for the guard as I went by
him, crying about how awful I felt as this would be the last time I saw
my husband alive. The other ladies were sympathetic and tried to calm me.
My maid flitted by at the edge of the group furthest from the guard and
soon we were out of the gates of the Tower.
We hid in an attic nearby and the other ladies left.
He had wanted to get undressed that night but I had ordered him to stay
'in role' in case there was a search. I spent a long time that night
'training' him in the art of being a 'Ladies maid' and had soon reduced
him to the rank of 'obedient servant'. In fact, I no longer thought of
him as a 'him', but now as a 'her' and quickly got used to treating her
as such. She had to help me into my night attire and she had to sleep on
the couch.
The next morning we watched as two of my husband's fellow conspirators
were executed.
A few days later, we made our way to Dover. From there we went to France.
It was there I finally let him relinquish his disguise. However, this was
not before I had taken him to bed and taken the dominant role for myself.
Strangely, enough, as I bounced on top of him, he cried out "More,
Mistress, more" and even enjoyed it when I used my horsewhip on his
backside, something he had done to me in the past.
We have now taken up residence in Paris, and still keep the maid's
uniform in the cupboard and use it from time to time!
