He was tired of the rat-race, and the overall situation there, and had been contemplating a change of venue. Doc Immelmann's letter had come after a particularly taxing day, and had struck a nerve. The whole crowd had had a good laugh at the situation that Carl had described. Even so, all of them planned on going to see Julia the next day, if they could.
Carl turned his attention to Gloria. "Where are you living, now." he asked. "I have a one bedroom duplex that I'm staying in. It only costs me $100 a month, with all bills paid. It's about all I can afford." she added. Maria looked at Floyd. He nodded his head slightly. Something the rest of them caught, quickly. "How much do you have there?" Maria asked. "Just some clothes, and a few other things. I have a radio cassette, and some dishes, and my Teddy Bear. I can't live without my Teddy." she answered. Floyd asked, then, "How long are you signed for?" She answered "I just rent it by the month. I had to give them a $100 cleaning deposit, and promised to give them 48 hours notice before I moved out, but that's it. I've kept it cleaner than it was when I moved in, though. Maria looked over at Althea, and smiled. "I think that, unless I'm badly mistaken, WE are going to have a room come open, shortly. The rest of them laughed. Mel looked over at Althea. You look like about the same sizes, and after we give you the nickel tour, tomorrow, we'll go get your things, and move them to YOUR new home. Watch out for Francis, though. He's SMOOTH!!! "You trust me to go with YOUR husband to get my things? she asked. Maria looked at her. "Why not. He's not going to do anything you don't want him to do to you. If you and him end up in bed for a little while, it's gonna be because you wanted it. He doesn't have to force ANYBODY. I've seen him with other women, before and it looks the same as it does with me, for the most part. If you want to give him a little personal thanks, then it's just fine with me, as long as he can give me a little of the same treatment."
Floyd looked over at the both of them. "Better wait and see how tired we are when it comes quitting time. We might be too tired to even think of anything like that. OKAY?" Both women laughed at him. "Ya gotta point, sweetie." Maria laughed. That tar paper IS getting a little hefty." They sat there eating the rest of their lunch, and resting for the afternoon.
They went home and changed into clean clothes, after showering, and Floyd and Gloria went to get her things. Just in case, Floyd had brought a clean tarp, and some bungee cords. They went in and the few things she had fitted in the back seat of his pickup, nicely. Susan had cooked their supper, and had set out to show them that she was just as good a cook as her Mom and/or Althea. She had fixed fried chicken, green beans, biscuits, mashed potatoes, and cream gravy. There was a pot of fresh brewed coffee, and a gallon each of ice tea, and Kool-ade.
They carried Gloria's things in and put them in the Guest Room, to give her an empty closet. Gloria sat on the bed after hanging up her clothes, and wept. I just can't believe that almost total strangers have opened their home, and their hearts to me. More than once I have thought about checking out to get it over with. Now I feel like I have something worth living for. All of you, and your friends, and now, the guys at work. It's turning around so fast it's making me dizzy. I'm so happy that I couldn't help but to cry. I'm sorry if I ruined your evening, but it was so much in such a little time. I love you all, so much. Now I know what Cinderella must have felt like." Both of the ladies kissed and hugged her, repeatedly, telling her, "You're a part of this family for as long as you want to stay with us. This is your new home. We're falling in love with you, too. Susan has a surprise for you, Saturday. We're gonna sleep late, and take you shopping first, then Susan is going to give you her surprise. Come on in and eat a bite of supper. growing girls need their nourishment. Floyd says he is gonna work your pretty little butt OFF, tomorrow. So a good supper, and a better breakfast will be needed. Maria looked over at Althea, and smiled. "I think that, unless I'm badly mistaken, WE are going to have a room come open, shortly. The rest of them laughed. Mel looked over at Althea. "You know she is already my daughter, in MY mind. She is as welcome here as anybody can imagine. She has a room to herself if she wants, but, I kind of feel she wants to share a room with some UN NAMED PERSON, in this house, which is just fine with me. I'm not so old that I forgot what young love feels like. It'll be nice to have another woman to talk to, for me, too. We can give EVERYBODY a run over the coals." Althea leaned over and hugged, then kissed Mel. "Thank You, Mommy. I hope I can be all that you want in a new daughter." Mel kissed her back. "You already have, My Love. You already have." She looked over at Susan. "In a way, I wish that I had another son, so Susan could live with us, too. I'm sorry it didn't work out better for you, but the stars decided another way. I love you just as much as I love Althea. I couldn't ask for two better daughters." Susan got up and went around the table to her. "I love you, too. Mommy. Things will turn out good for me. I just know they will. You are showing me things to go with what Mom is showing me, and the two of you are going to be REALLY proud of me, someday. I PROMISE!!!"
Floyd looked over at Gloria. "Go ahead and call your landlord, and give him your notice, then. You can stay the night at our house, and borrow some jeans and shirts from Althea. You look like about the same sizes, and after we give you the nickel tour, tomorrow, we'll go get your things, and move them to YOUR new home. Watch out for Francis, though. He's SMOOTH!!! The first day he met his wife, he had her eating out of his hand, and asking HIM to marry HER. They have a son, now, and act happier than a human has the right to feel. Both are great people.
Gloria asked to borrow a phone, because she didn't have one, and was offered all the phones in the room. She called her landlord, and informed him of her intentions, and handed it back to Bob, who was sitting next to her. She asked if they had a place to park her car, as she was driving it when she came to work. Bob told her, "Don't worry about it. You can ride with Floyd, and his family, and we'll deliver it to the house for you."
The evening stretched a bit longer, and Gloria, for the first time in a LONG time, felt like she was part of something, instead of on the outside, looking in. When they left, she got in the back seat with Susan, and immediately felt her warm hand taking hers. "Unless you're tired, we can gossip a bit before we go to bed. Daddy will just spend the day getting you introduced to the other people, and you getting teased. All of the bad ones are gone now. The ones out there with you are really good people. The kind that would give you the shirts off of their backs, and their last red cent. If I were older, and looking for a husband, that is the place I would go. You're going to meet a bunch of sweet guys, that are real dreamboats. Just hang on and enjoy the ride. And don't be surprised if you find yourself being swept off your feet." Gloria hugged her back. I think I just found a new BFF." Then she kissed Susan on the forehead. "I'm really not THAT old. I'm only 30, and barely THAT." Floyd and Maria had been listening from the front seats, and smiled at each other. They were enjoying this new person in their lives. She was nice.
Susan and Gloria ended up sleeping together, after taking their showers together, and talking the night away. They shared stories of their pasts, and Gloria revealed that SHE had been a cheerleader in High School, also. She had fallen in love with a guy that took her away from everything she knew, and them dumped her when he found out she was pregnant.
They finally fell asleep, in each others arms, and awoke the next morning when Maria called them to breakfast. Maria took her in Althea's room, and found her some blue jeans, socks, and a shirt to wear to work. They also found out that she hardly ever wore bras, either, and took out a T-shirt for her to wear under her shirt. Just in case. Then Maria showed her where all the feminine products were kept, so she would know when she needed them.
Her and Maria dressed and went to leave with Floyd. He was going to drive one of the trucks, today, and Maria would drive the pickup out for Floyd, to the site.
It was destined to be an office complex. It was on 20 acres of land, and was, for the time being, a royal mess. Piles of dirt, and assorted materials were s**ttered everywhere. The only people there were Francis and Luke. They drove over together from their houses. Maria called them over, and introduced them to Gloria. "Gloria MARTIN. These two clowns are Francis Jackson, your new boss, and Luke Dalls, our welder. Both of them are really great guys, but take their stories with a grain of salt. There are two gals that are wishing they had had that advise. Ones a Mommy, now, and the other soon will be. Wait'll you meet their wives. You'll see "Beauty and the b**st" in front of your eyes. How's Essie and Levi doing? and Barb? Isn't she about ready to deliver? It should be soon." Francis told her that Essie and Levi were doing great, and were going to be out here sometime today. Luke told her that Barbie was going in for a check up, and that Essie was taking her, so she would be with them. She was still a month or so from her time. HE was getting a daughter. He had just found out a short while back. The Doc was breaking in a new Tech, and she hadn't been able to get the baby to cooperate so they could see what sex she was, until this last time. They were going to name her Laurie, for another girl that Barb had known. SHE had been one of the Deputies down in Texas, when Barbara had moved up here. Her and Barb had shared a house for a long time, together. Maria told him to be sure to have them come and tell her HI before they left. Both told her that they would.
Floyd drove up and the crew unloaded from his truck. Wayne was right behind him in another truck, holding the rest of the crew. Maria hugged and kissed both of them and told Gloria that Floyd would be along in a minute to take care of her. Maria hugged her, and told her, "GOOD LUCK!!!" Then she went over to another group of men.
It was warming up, and was soon warm enough to take her shirt off. She hesitated, but Francis tapped her on the shoulder and just pointed. Maria was already bare from the waist up. Gloria undid the buttons on her shirt, and laid it across the track of the bulldozer they were looking at. It was very similar to the one their neighbor had had when Gloria was growing up. He had taught her how to operate it, and she became quite skilled at all but the finest work. She had pushed down trees, cleared brush, and dug ponds with it, repairing others on both farms when dams had collapsed. She had told him of her experience, so he was making sure that she knew where all the grease certs were on this model, and where to shoot the grease to tighten the tracks, when needed. She had paid strict attention to what he was telling, and showing, her. He was going to ride with her for a few hours, to make sure she was okay, but wanted to make certain of her skill. He was impressed at the way she handled the behemoth machine, and went to his own machine.
She smiled at the way her swamper kept looking at her. He was just recently hired, himself, and was a Veteran. His name was Tony Seavers. He had been a computer Technician in the Air Force, and wanted a job where he could be outdoors more, instead of in a room full of electronics. He was a bit older than most of the new people, at 35 years, but he was nice. Every time she looked at him, he smiled at her. She pulled the 'dozer over near the pump to fill the tank with fuel, and he was "johnny-on-the-spot" to get the nozzle and have the fuel flowing into the tank. They talked as the tank was filling. She saw a livid scar on his back, and asked him about it. He told her. "I was in my first tour in Vietnam, and got into more than I could chew, one night, I was definitely in a world of hurt, and my boss, a Sergeant, came and pulled me out of the way, and took care of the situation. I was an Air Policeman on a big airbase. He was my Squad Leader His name was Tinsley. Michael Tinsley. Some infiltrators had snuck in and I found them, or, they found me. They were getting ready to do me a damn-damn, when he came up and took out two of them with his sidearm, and two more of 'em with some kind of fancy fighting he had learned. We called for a meat wagon to load the two dead ones, and some other APs came and took the other to the lock up. He took me to the hospital and got me sewed up, and gift wrapped, and chewed my ass about not calling for help. I reenlisted and we kept running into each other, the first time in Germany. He had got married to the sweetest little Thai girl you could imagine, and just lately, she gave him twin daughters. SHE'S STILL the prettiest thing I ever saw. She's so sweet she has bees crying over their honey, for not being like her. Her name is MIsti."
The tank was nearly full, and he paid closer attention to it as it neared the top. He shut the pump off, and replaced the nozzle, and the cap on the fuel tank. "There ya' go. Babe. Now ya' just got to burp yer baby. If I see ya doin' THAT, though, I'M gonna give ya a WIDE BERTH from now on. THIS BABY IS 45 tons of PURE MEAN, and you'll be too much for ME to handle!!! She laughed at his joke. He was nicer than she had figured. He leaned closer and told her, "Not to try to start something, but if you take off your shirt, nobody will say anything. We've had several around that would do that, and wear shorts when it got hot. THEY said it was more comfortable. It'll be all up to you, though. Maria is topless most days, unless it's VERY cold. She's as sweet as they come, and a good friend. Aces from top to bottom. Our last job before this one, the families fed us, and brought coffee and doughnuts out in the morning, to us. The ladies all came out in the raw to feed us. That's where Luke and Francis met their wives. They were two of the ladies. We all went skinny dipping in the evenings, too, till it got too cold."
Gloria thanked him for the "heads up" and got back on her machine. She had a little more to do before this section would be finished.
Lunch time rolled around and she went over to sit with Maria, and Floyd. She asked about what Tony had told her, and was told nearly the same as he had told her. Floyd told her that if she was more comfortable wearing shorts, and a tank top, it would be okay, too. Many of the past ladies had done so, including Maria. Maria asked her if the two of them, Glory and Floyd, could handle getting her things, or did they need her to come and give a hand? Gloria was a bit surprised. "You trust me to go with YOUR husband to get my things? she asked. Maria looked at her. "Why not. He's not going to do anything you don't want him to do to you. If you and him end up in bed for a little while, it's gonna be because you wanted it. He doesn't have to force ANYBODY. I've seen him with other women, before and it looks the same as it does with me, for the most part. If you want to give him a little personal thanks, then it's just fine with me, as long as he can give me a little of the same treatment."
Floyd looked over at the both of them. "Better wait and see how tired we are when it comes quitting time. We might be too tired to even think of anything like that. OKAY?" Both women laughed at him. "Ya gotta point, sweetie." Maria laughed. That tar paper IS getting a little hefty." They sat there eating the rest of their lunch, and resting for the afternoon.
They went home and changed into clean clothes, after showering, and Floyd and Gloria went to get her things. Just in case, Floyd had brought a clean tarp, and some bungee cords. They went in and the few things she had fitted in the back seat of his pickup, nicely. Susan had cooked their supper, and had set out to show them that she was just as good a cook as her Mom and/or Althea. She had fixed fried chicken, green beans, biscuits, mashed potatoes, and cream gravy. There was a pot of fresh brewed coffee, and a gallon each of ice tea, and Kool-ade.
They carried Gloria's things in and put them in the Guest Room, to give her an empty closet. Gloria sat on the bed after hanging up her clothes, and wept. Susan heard her, as she passed her room, and called her Mom, quietly. The two of them went in to see what was the matter. Gloria looked up at them, and replied, "NOTHING!!! I just can't believe that almost total strangers have opened their home, and their hearts to me. More than once I have thought about checking out to get it over with. Now I feel like I have something worth living for. All of you, and your friends, and now, the guys at work. It's turning around so fast it's making me dizzy. I'm so happy that I couldn't help but to cry. I'm sorry if I ruined your evening, but it was so much in such a little time. I love you all, so much. Now I know what Cinderella must have felt like." Both of the ladies kissed and hugged her, repeatedly, telling her, "You're a part of this family for as long as you want to stay with us. This is your new home. We're falling in love with you, too. Susan has a surprise for you, Saturday. We're gonna sleep late, and take you shopping first, then Susan is going to give you her surprise. Come on in and eat a bite of supper. growing girls need their nourishment. Floyd says he is gonna work your pretty little butt OFF, tomorrow. So a good supper, and a better breakfast will be needed. Wash that pretty face and come to the table."
They ate supper quietly, and sat watching TV until they had seen the news and weather. Susan washed the dishes, and cleaned the kitchen, turning down offers of help from Gloria, then joined them. They went to their rooms, but Gloria came back to Susan's room. "Can I sleep with you, again. That was so nice, having someone to hold while I slept. You're so soft and warm that I DIDN'T EVEN WANT TEDDY. Susan laughed and hugged her. That's why Althea and I sleep together so much. Even if we have our own rooms, we like holding each other while we sleep. She has a new bed partner, now, though. I was a little down last night, until you came in. That made it great for me." For Susan, it was like having a brand new "big" sister, and for Gloria, it was like finding the best gift she could imagine, under the Christmas tree. They sat on the bed talking, until Maria called to them, telling them to get some sleep. They curled up in each others arms, again, and were both sleeping like Angels.
Gloria woke up to the best smelling house she could imagine. Her and Susan ran giggling into the shower, laughing and playing like they were c***dren, and soon were out, dressed, and headed for the kitchen. Brewing coffee, cooking bacon and sausage, and some of Maria's special Honey Cinnamon Rolls in the oven. A loaf of bread was on the counter, waiting to be transformed into buttered toast. Both of them went over and kissed her on the cheeks, and told her "Good Morning!!!" Floyd came in a second later, and received the same treatment, except where Susan kissed his cheek, Gloria kissed his lips. "THANK YOU!!! You really are as good as I was told. Even BETTER!!!"
They ate breakfast, and packed their lunches, and went to the yard. Randall, the Lead Pipe Fitter, was supposed to be driving, but he had woke up sick, yesterday morning, and had vomited. His wife had called him in , sick, and, soon afterward, had taken him to the doctor. He was rushed to the hospital to take care of a ruptured appendix, and would be in the hospital for a few days, getting IV antibiotics, just in case. He was going to be a bit sore for a few days. Carl had asked Floyd to fill in for him.
Each went and started doing their jobs, until, a little before noon, when a silver BMW rolled up to where Floyd was filling his 'dozer with fuel, and stopped. Susan bounced out from the driver side, running over, and hugging her Dad. She was waving a new Driver's License to show him. Mel climbed out on the passenger side, and went over to kiss him, as Susan ran to show her Mom. Susan had grabbed her Mom and lifted her off the ground, and spun around several times. Mel explained to Floyd that she had made a perfect score on BOTH of her exams, and had been commended by the examiner. She was now, a duly licensed driver, with NO restrictions. She and Maria came over holding each other and laughing. Mel kissed HER in greeting, as she nearly always did. They told Floyd that Albert was with William, showing a house. HE wanted to see Albert's style. Mel's phone rang and it was Albert. HE had just sold his FIRST HOUSE!!! The people had just walked out of the door after signing the contract.
Carl arrived a few minutes later, and told Wayne that in celebration, to give everybody the afternoon off, WITH PAY. He was on the way home, to get some clothes for Julia, and the things they would need for CJ to go with him. The doc had pronounced him healthy as a horse, and ready for some serious spoiling from Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles. Mom, Dad, and Granny were already doing their share of the spoiling. Especially Granny.
A few minutes later, the equipment was parked, the tools had been put away, and locked up, and the people were standing by the trucks, waiting to go home. They were confident that they were at least a week ahead of schedule, already. Monday they would start pouring the foundation. This was why Carl was so free to give extra time off, and paid vacations, to his people. Not a sour note in his band.
Mel told Maria, that as soon as they got cleaned up, to come to her house. They were going to celebrate Susan's Driver's License, and Albert's first sale. She had already called Althea, and SHE was doing the cooking. She wanted to do it, because she wanted them to witness her culinary skills.
Bob, as soon as Mel had called with her news, had taken Althea to the market, and purchased what she wanted to cook. They had loaded their purchases in Bob's Suburban, and unloaded all of it, with him helping to mix the seasonings for the entrees. She mixed the spice cake, just the way that Doris had taught her, and put it in the oven, and was making the icing for it. All the others had been invited to come to the celebration, too.
Granny Mayfield had taught her to make some of the best stroganauff she had ever tasted, and advised her that it DIDN'T have to be beef. Any meat would work as well. Even a mix of different meats. The seasoning, the sauce, and the noodles, egg of course, were what made it so good. She had used almost any kind of meat they could name. From moose, and caribou, to squirrel, or opossum. Rabbit was especially good. Bear was good, if a little on the greasy side, though. Althea had bought beef, pork, and lamb, to use in hers. When they showed up, a little later, Hiram had handed her a few packages of venison to add to the mix.
Althea had everything under control, and Doris suggested that she go and clean herself up, with a nice shower. She kissed Doris, and thanked her, knowing that she was there to come to her rescue, if it were needed. Hiram had btought his van, and David had brought his, too, knowing that the "town folks" didn't have the parking space available to them, that they had on the farms. The patio was full of happy people, and the dining room was full of happy women, doing what they loved to do. Visit with each other, and swap gossip, recipes, and stories of their families. As soon as each of them had learned to use them, they had transcribed all their recipes onto computer discs. Each of them had brought three or four of their own discs, to share with Melody, Althea, Maria, and the new girl, Gloria. Mel had made her sound like she was already one of them. They were all anxious to meet her. The men were anxious to meet her, too. But for a different reason. Bob had sworn that she was a "looker" from way back.
Althea went to take her shower, and was inside when she heard a knock. Bob was standing there, and telling her how proud he was to have her with them. She looked him up and down. "If you don't mind, I need somebody to scrub my back." He was in as fast as he could get undressed. He took the proffered sponge and started washing her, and enjoying the sight that he had seen several times, but had never touched. He also knew that, with a house full of people, and more on the way, that they were liable to find others with them. Althea had been told by Susan, that he was a magnificent lover, and was just as anxious to try him, as he was to try her.
She turned the nozzle of the shower a little higher, so it would ho over their heads, and gave him the best kiss she knew how to give. She then went to her knees, taking him in hand, then mouth, to giver him a VERY nice erection. She had been planning to do this since she found out about his prowess. She had him as hard as she wanted, and went to her back, her hands reaching up to him. "Come love me, Daddy. I've been told so many good things about you. Show me how you love a girl."
