“There was no race yesterday?” Kara asked while I was showering after my run with Jacquelyn.

“No. There’s one next week. We didn’t watch last week’s race because I was so preoccupied. I saw the results in the paper. Rusty Wallace won again, but Bill finished fourth and Earnhardt fifth. Bill has a 79 point lead on Wallace and a 198 point lead on Earnhardt. With two races to go, Labonte is out of it because he’s 508 points back. They race in Phoenix next week, then two weeks later in Atlanta to end the season. Two top-fives will lock it up for Bill.”

“You just don’t seem excited by that right now.”

“No. I know it’s important because of Stephie, but with Jess gone, I just can’t get excited about much of anything. I’m just barely keeping it together. For once I’m glad that I’m so busy that I don’t have time to think. But even then, she creeps into my thoughts when I’m busy and it makes it hard to focus.”

“Is Gwen going to call you after the deposition today?”

“Yes. I think Bethany has the strategy pegged. It’s all about trying to get more money from me.”

“Could that be what this is about? Just money?”

“But that would make no sense. A DNA test with both the father and the mother’s DNA is conclusive. It CAN’T be a shakedown. If it was, they would have folded as soon as I demanded the DNA test. Carla has to believe it’s true. And if she does, I can’t see how it can’t be.”

“You don’t think there could have been another guy?”

“Possible, but not likely. It makes no sense for there to have been another guy. Bethany agrees with me on that. Remember, she talked to Carla about her issues.”

I finished my shower, dressed, kissed Kara and Birgit and headed to the office. I couldn’t work with Jeri because I had conversion work to do. I’d also miss working with her on Tuesday, as I had to go up to Milwaukee to Belarus. Jeri and I were making good progress, and we felt we’d finish for a mid-January demo that would actually work, though not be feature complete. And I was on my best behavior, and careful not to say or do anything to upset her. The last thing I needed was another talk with Dave, or worse, with the Board of Directors. I’d gotten some time from Jack to do a bit of QA on what Jeri and I had completed so far and he’d given us some advice on minor changes to make.

Gwen called at 3:20pm, just after I’d returned from IIT, to report on the deposition.

“I think Bethany is right about their strategy. I should have guessed that myself. Based on what I heard today, I don’t think they’ll win the motion on Wednesday, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they simply withdraw it tomorrow. Their emergency appeal of the dismissal of the separate maintenance claim was rejected. They can proceed with that only after the case is completely resolved.”

“Interesting,” I said. “So it wasn’t ruled on?”

“No. It was what’s called an ‘interlocutory appeal’. Those don’t often succeed. Basically, they have to wait for the entire case to be decided then they can appeal everything. It’s about judicial economy - one visit to the Court of Appeals versus several. It’s going to come down to the DNA test. Once those results are in, we’ll worry about the child support amount and custody and visitation.”

“So you think I’m the father?”

“After the deposition, I can’t see how you aren’t. She claims that she only had sex once before the baby was born, and it was with you. She also said that from the time you first went out until the baby was born; she never even kissed another guy. I feel that she was telling the truth. That’s pretty damning by itself, and if it is true, then we both know what the DNA test is going to show.”

“Does she have a boyfriend or husband?” I asked.

“She’s engaged. That may be part of the reason for the sole custody claim. She may want her future husband to adopt Rachel.”

“I am NOT going to give up my parental rights without a fight,” I said.

“I know. I’ve put her attorney on notice of that fact. One thing that works in your favor, and this is a bit cynical, is that you have a lot more money than she does. You can afford to fight longer - a lot longer. She’ll try to recover her attorney fees, but we’ll argue that she didn’t give you a chance to accept paternity and agree to child support in advance of her suit, and because of that, she’s not entitled to recover the fees.”

“What a mess,” I sighed.

“Yes. But so far, it’s gone about as well as can be expected. I’ll let you know what happens with the hearing on the restraining order.”

“Thanks, Gwen,” I said.

As I had done every day since Jess had left, I went to the hospital to wait outside. And as had happened nearly every day, Alicia came out and told me that Jess had left the hospital via the garage. I’d been tempted to try to confront her in the hospital, but the last thing I wanted to do was cause trouble. I thanked Alicia, and went inside and went up to Doctor Barton’s office. After a five minute wait, I was shown in.

“I was going to call you,” he said. “Jessica has a disciplinary hearing Thursday at 1:00pm.”

“Medical or behavioral?” I asked.

“Behavioral. She got into a shouting match with a medical student this morning. The Chief Resident wanted to suspend her on the spot, but I talked him out of it and he requested the hearing.”

“Oh, God damn,” I sighed.

“Nobody can talk to her, Steve. I’m at my wits end, as I’m sure you are.”

“What’s going to happen?” I asked.

“It all depends on how she handles herself at the hearing. I thought about asking you to be there to speak for her, but I’m concerned that that might set her off.”

“You think she’s going to be suspended, don’t you,” I said as a statement, not a question.

“Yes.”

“Then I’m going to be there. I don’t care if she hates me at this point, I can’t let her throw away her medical career.”

“You’re a good man, Steve. Maybe a suspension is what she needs, but I agree, we can’t let that happen without a fight. Come to my office on Thursday at about 12:45pm and we’ll go to the hearing together. I’ll let the hospital administrator know that you’re going to speak, but I won’t tell anyone else in advance.”

“Thanks, Al,” I said.

We shook hands and I headed home.

“Jess is in real trouble,” I told Kara when she got home. “She’s probably going to be suspended. She’s been acting out at work.”

“Acting out? Like a little kid?”

“I don’t know what else to call it,” I said. “There’s a hearing on Thursday. I talked to Al Barton, and I’m going to speak for her. I don’t care if she hates my guts, I can’t let her ruin her career.”

“I’m coming too! What time?”

“I’m supposed to meet Al at his office at 12:45,” I said.

“I’ll end my office hours early,” Kara said. “I’ll be there. I’ll make sure Veronica can stay with the kids. What happened with the deposition?”

“Nothing good,” I said. “Gwen is convinced that Carla is telling the truth that I’m the only guy she was with before the baby was born. The custody stuff is probably a combination of what Bethany thought plus the fact that Carla is engaged and likely wants her new husband to adopt Rachel.”

“Can they do that?”

“Only if they terminate my parental rights, and that’s not likely. I’ll fight tooth and nail to prevent that. You know me and my kids.”

“I do. You’ve never even seen this little girl and you’re already fiercely protective of her.”

“If she’s mine, and I am sure that she is, you can be damned sure I’m going to be part of her life!”

November 1, 1988, Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Chicago, Illinois

“Do you think you’ll be done before lunch?” Chris Gibson asked with a smirk.

“Yes, but I’m not going to be good company,” I warned.

“What’s wrong? Did I do something?”

I shook my head, “No. Let me get to work, please.”

“OK,” she said, sounding sad.

I went to the empty office next to hers and logged into the computer and started to work. My drive up had been agonizing because I hadn’t been able to get Jessica’s situation off my mind. I badly wanted her back, but even more I wanted her to be a doctor. She was, without question, going to be a fantastic trauma surgeon who would potentially save many lives. But first, Doctor Barton and I had to try to convince her to save her career.

I finished the work that Chris had for me at 12:30pm and she practically begged me to take her to lunch. I refused several times, before finally relenting, and agreeing to go to Waukesha for Ponza Rottas. We took both cars, and parked side-by-side in the lot, and went into the restaurant.

“What’s bothering you?” Chris asked after we ordered.

“Just some stuff at home,” I said.

“Did you get in trouble for what we did last time you were here?”

I shook my head, “No. That was NOT the issue. And before you ask the next question, yes, I very much enjoyed it.”

“But you aren’t interested now?”

“No,” I said. “And please don’t think it has anything to do with you. Let me work out my issues, and then you can ask again. I can’t promise for the future, but for now I have to say ‘no’.”

“OK. I just thought maybe I could cheer you up and make you feel really good.”

“Oh, you could make me feel really good, but nobody can cheer me up right now.”

“Will you tell me what’s going on?”

“It’s complicated,” I sighed.

“Everything with you is complicated!”

“Sorry, I guess I overuse that word. The biggest issue right now is that my wife might be suspended from her medical Residency program. I can’t give you any details, but she has a hearing on Thursday.”

“Oh, wow! That’s harsh. I guess I can see why having sex isn’t on the top of your list of things to do right now.”

“Exactly,” I said.

We had our lunch and when we finished, Chris gave me a kiss on the cheek, told me she hoped everything worked out, and I headed back to Chicago. I got home just in time to walk to the hospital to sit in my usual spot.

“You heard?” Alicia said when she came out.

“I did,” I sighed. “Have you talked to her?”

“I don’t even try any more. Nobody does. Everyone pretty much hates her at this point - the nurses, the Residents, the medical students. She’s a pariah in the ER. They’ll be thrilled if she’s suspended.”

“Fuck,” I said.

“She doesn’t care,” Alicia said. “In fact, at this point, I don’t think she cares about anything at all.”

“Shit,” I said. “I guess I’ll go back to my office,” I said.

“Walk me to my car?” she asked.

“Sure, I guess,” I said.

We walked down the sidewalk, and turned towards the parking lot. It was more or less on the way back to the office, so it wasn’t out of my way. She walked up to a VW bug.

“This is me. Thanks. I’m sorry for everything that’s going on.”

“Me too,” I said.

“If you want some cheering up, or just want to forget, I have a bottle of Jack Daniel’s at home. We can order some pizza and get obliterated.”

“I’m not sure that’s the best plan for either of us. You have a shift early tomorrow and I don’t drink to get drunk.”

“Then have some pizza, a drink, and some good company.”

She was cute, had a nice body, and was clearly available. But I wasn’t interested in blowing apart even what I considered was a slim chance of reconciliation with Jessica.

“I’m flattered, but no. Now is not the time to do something like that.”

“She doesn’t care about you anymore,” Alicia said.

“I know,” I sighed. “But I still care about her.”

Alicia got into her car and I walked back to the office to put the finishing touches on a proposal, then went home and spent the evening cooped up in the bedroom with Kara, just cuddling and taking comfort in the love of my remaining wife and my daughter.

“What’s going on?” Elyse asked as I pounded away furiously on the keyboard of my Unix server.

“I’m talking to some people about some sort of e-mail worm that’s spreading rapidly around ARPAnet. It’s taken down a bunch of systems. It seems to affect the Digital VAX and Sun systems. I tried to send electronic mail to Scott but I haven’t heard back from him. I’m not sure if he got it or not.”

“Worm?”

“Some kind of self-replicating code that’s taking down computers. Mine can’t be affected because it doesn’t spread via UUCP - the protocol my modem uses.”

“Who did it? The Russians?”

“What?” I chuckled. “In retaliation for Reagan ordering the new American Embassy in Moscow to be torn down because it was riddled with bugs?”

Elyse laughed, “I still don’t see how that happened.”

“Why? They had to use Soviet contractors. Who do you think THEY work for?”

“Uh, yeah. Never mind. Duh!”

“Exactly. Sure, this could be them, but it could also be something that got away from some college kid or researcher at one of the companies on ARPAnet. It’ll take some time to sort out.”

“So you aren’t trying to solve the problem?”

“Nope. I’m just a spectator!”

November 3, 1988, Chicago, Illinois

“Hi Steve,” Al said. “Kara, I didn’t expect you to be here.”

“I had to come, Doctor Barton,” Kara said. “I can’t let Steve or Jessica go through this alone.”

“Any update on the paternity suit?” he asked.

“No. They lost their attempt to get a restraining order and their interlocutory appeal. I have the DNA swab and blood draw on Friday at the lab. Carla and Rachel will have theirs next week. We should have a definitive answer the first or second week of December, but I have to tell you, that after Monday’s deposition, we’re all convinced that I’m the father.”

“Let’s worry about that after Jessica’s hearing. You’ll have up to five minutes. Focus on what you know about her. Her dedication. Her love of medicine. Her abilities. Acknowledge that she’s been under stress. Don’t give any details, but you can say that you’re part of it or responsible for it. Bringing up the separation is dicey. It could go either way.”

“What do you mean?”

“It could reinforce her erratic behavior or it could be seen as a cause of the stress. I can’t say for sure how it will be taken.”

“Who makes the decision?”

“The Chief ER Resident, Chief Surgical Resident, an Attending from each service, and the hospital administrator. I’d normally fill one of the slots, but I’m speaking for her so I’m not allowed to. I had to weigh that as well. I don’t think one vote will matter. It’s going to be 5-0 one way or the other. It’s our job to convince them to not suspend her. I’m warning you that it’s a tough row to hoe. If she does get suspended, we want it to be for as short a time as possible. And we do that by showing that she’s been under intense stress.”

“Damn,” I said.

“This is very serious. I hear Alicia talked to you yesterday, and what she told you is true. Jessica is not liked at all at the moment. I don’t know that everyone hates her, but it’s close.”

“OK. Let’s do this,” I said firmly.

We followed Doctor Barton to a conference room which had rows of chairs, plus a table in front with five chairs. There were several doctors and nurses sitting in the chairs, but nobody at the table. Jessica wasn’t in the room. We sat down in the third row, and waited as doctors and nurses filed in, and the front table filled up. About one minute before the hearing was to start, Jessica came in. She saw us and I smiled, but she just glared at me.

June 1981, Milford, Ohio “Stephanie!” I growled when she came out of her room for swimming. “What?” “Get in here! Now!” I said firmly. She walked into my room and I shut the door. “When did you call her, Squirt?” “Call who?” she said, trying, but failing, to act innocent. “Stephanie, what got Jennifer in trouble? What was my problem with Becky?” She visibly deflated, “Yesterday. But I had to! I had to! You were going to get engaged to Kara!” “I was NOT going to get engaged to...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 7 SakurakoChapter 12 House Calls

November 8, 1993, Chicago, Illinois A dark fog swirled before my eyes as I tried to take stock. My head hurt, badly. I felt something on my face and realized, dimly, it was an oxygen mask. My right hand was uncomfortable and I recognized the feeling of an IV and pulse-oximeter. My left arm ached fiercely. On my chest I felt the pads and wires of an EKG. I didn’t feel anything else wrong as I continued taking inventory. I tried to open my eyes, but the fog didn’t clear. I tried to speak, but...

A WellLived Life Book 10 The WifeChapter 19 Fallout

February, 1985, Chicago, Illinois As the Twin Beech took me back to Meigs Field, I thought about everything that Bethany and I had talked about, and about my conversations with Elyse and Alice, as well as what had happened with Katy. After we landed, I let Patrick know that I wouldn’t be making the flight for the next two weeks, and that Bethany would let him know what the plans were after that. “Her dad called me already. When she’s ready to come to Chicago. I’ll fly her up. Her dad will...

A WellLived Life Book 4 BethanyChapter 31 Fallout a Party and a Dance Part I

October/November, 1980, Milford, Ohio I didn’t know for sure what to expect when I walked into chemistry class on Wednesday. I had tossed and turned in bed and hadn’t slept well because I couldn’t get the situation with Kara out of my head. It was going to be a mess, no matter what happened. That was the only thing I was sure of. “Hi, Steve,” Kara said quietly. “Hi, Kara,” I answered, not looking her in the eye. “What’s wrong?” “I told you last night what was wrong and what would...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 32 Fallout

March 1978 I dreaded going to school. I thought about staying home sick. I rarely did that and if I told Mom and Dad I was sick, they wouldn’t doubt me. I had missed exactly one day of school in the past three years. Unfortunately, that would only postpone the inevitable. I didn’t have any classes with Jennifer, but we did have lunch together as we had all year. I could only wait to see what happened. I saw several of the gang in the hallway or class, but nobody said anything or even gave...

June 23, 1994, Oguni, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan My first week in Japan flew by, and a routine developed. Sakurako would wake me; I’d exercise and run, then shower and have breakfast, and share tea with Sakurako. After breakfast, I’d meditate, and then have my training session. After lunch, I’d work in the garden, or, as I had this day, wash the floors in the house. Hiroshi would accompany me back to the cottage and we’d talk while I washed up and dressed for dinner. After dinner, I’d spend...

A Bronze Bookmark Halloween

A Bronze Bookmark Halloween An "Odues' Oddities" Story by TGTrinity The wind was picking up, and Sam secured his scarf tightly around his neck. The city streets were empty, save for some stragglers who were drunkenly trying to find their way to another party. There was a commotion in the distance, and Sam figured it was some kids egging a house, a drunken brawl moving from a party into the neighborhood streets or a father chasing a guy out of his daughters bedroom. On Halloween...

A WellLived Life Book 9 AnalaChapter 64 Halloween Surprises Part I

October, 1984, Chicago, Illinois October flew by. Between school, work, programming for the unions, and time with my friends, days vanished like fog under a bright sun. Wen had continued getting one kiss each Saturday, but nothing more, and she’d gone home after studying. The twins, for all the teasing and banter, hadn’t done anything except serve lunch when I’d visited them on Sundays. Things with everyone else continued as they had. Anala had gone on a few dates with Prajesh, the guy who...

October, 1984, Chicago, Illinois Bethany was right - I did have some very surprising things happen in my life. And they never seemed to stop. After they had the huts finished, the water supply taken care of and even finding they had plenty of food with the coconuts and the bananas, the fishing was good and Mr. Candleford even managed to trap a wild pig in a pit trap that worked perfectly. June 1977 When I got home, I grabbed a Coke and some chips and went right to my room. I didn’t think I could deal with my parents or Jeff or Stephanie. I just needed to be by myself. That wouldn’t seem odd to anyone, because I often went to my room to read. In addition, I now had the TV I’d received for my birthday. July, 1982, Milford, Ohio I woke up early on Friday morning to make breakfast for Kara and her mom before she went to work. Mrs. Blanchard was surprised, but very pleased. After her mom left for work, Kara gave me a fierce kiss. “Thanks for staying in and cooking breakfast for us,” Kara said. “I hope that doesn’t cause you trouble with Stephanie, with you breaking your normal routine.” “Don’t worry about it,” I said, kissing her back. “We got in a bit later than I expected, and she’ll...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 38 Jennifer

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois After Rosie left, I stripped the sheets from my bed, as well as the cover of the duvet, and tossed everything into the washing machine. I lit a lavender candle in the room, and then swept and dusted. I did a quick spot-check of the rest of the house and noticed that the tub in the sauna needed to be cleaned. I scrubbed it, then mopped the sauna floor with a damp sponge mop. I finished cleaning the sauna about the time the washing machine finished, so I moved...

May 26, 1991, Iron Mountain, Michigan “Shall we see if we can find a farm?” I asked at breakfast on Sunday morning. “That sounds like a great idea,” Jessica said. “There’s a visitor’s bureau in town,” Kara said. “I saw it when we were here the first time.” “I’m sorry I ruined that vacation,” Jessica said. “Ruined?” I protested. “Are you kidding? Getting you back was way more important than a few days of vacation!” “I agree,” Kara added. “Jess, you know exactly how bad off Steve was...

A WellLived Life Book 9 AnalaChapter 59 New Friends

August, 1984, Chicago, Illinois The rest of the week proceeded as expected - class on Wednesday, as well as the usual visit from Penny, work on Thursday, and class on Friday. Kara and I had lunch together at IIT, Sofia practiced her driving and parking, and I hung out with Mark Agnini after class for beers. Staci and I got into a couple of interesting debates about the Old Testament that Mark had to break up to allow others in the class to participate. She was very much of the ‘directly...

September 5, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “Interesting,” I said aloud as I was reading the Chicago Tribune while cuddling Birgit. “What, Daddy?” “My friend Bill Elliott is going to start his own racing team with McDonald’s as the sponsor.” “Sponsor?” “They pay money to paint the car red and yellow, and have the McDonalds sign on the hood.” “I like pink cars!” I chuckled, “I know you do, Pumpkin. Are your school friends coming today?” “Yes. Tiffany, Rachel, and Joey.” “Good. Shall we make...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 71 All Hallows Eve

October, 1983, Chicago, Illinois On Saturday, I was happy to see that Jorge showed up to study group and spent some time with Stephie on his calculus. She asked him to stay for the party, but he declined. I felt that him showing up for study group was a good sign and that over time we’d be able to ease him into the group. It was a matter of convincing him that we liked him and wanted him to be around because he was an interesting guy who we wanted to hang out with. I only spent about an...

A WellLived Life 3 Book 1 SuzanneChapter 7 Reaching the Peak

March 25, 2000, Chicago, Illinois “What time do I need to have you home?” “8:00pm will be fine,” Misty replied. “My parents are in Normal visiting my brother at Illinois State. They aren’t supposed to be home before 10:00pm.” Misty and I were in my car on the way to the NIKA apartment which, fortunately, was not being used. With our expansion, it was in more or less regular use, and that meant I didn’t have access to it as often as I would have liked. I was glad there had been a delay in...

January 17, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “What time do you have to leave this morning?” Kara asked as we showered together on Tuesday morning. “About 8:30am,” I said. “I’m driving over to get Jeri, then heading to O’Hare. We have an 11:00am flight. Assuming all goes well, we’ll be in the office by 3:00pm Pacific time. We’ll spend a couple hours going over the software then go to dinner. The demo is tomorrow. A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 7 Setting the Course of My Life

June 1977 Friday ended up being a non-event. The more I thought about it, the more I was sure that there was no way on this earth I could say what happened between Birgit and me was a sin. Calling it a sin would debase it into a meaningless act. I could never do that. And the more I thought about Jennie McGrath, the more sure I was that I couldn’t call what she did for me a sin, either. If the church was right, I was going to hell. And frankly, there was no way that could be true. So I...

March 4, 1992, Chicago, Illinois “Thanks for calling back,” I said when Keri put Dante’s call through to my phone. “Is there a problem with the project?” he asked. “From a technical standpoint, everything is fine. I’ll be blunt, because that’s how we deal with each other. I need you to stop hitting on my female staff members. And I need you to stop right now.” “Who complained?” “Does it matter? July 22, 2000, Chicago, Illinois “Albert, do you have everything packed?” Mom asked. “Yes, Mom!” I replied, rolling my eyes because she’d asked before I went to bed. “He’ll be fine, Babe,” Dad said. “Let’s walk to the hospital.” I usually didn’t get up early, but Dad had suggested it would help Mom if I walked to the hospital with her because I was leaving to see Jane for three weeks. KittyChapter 5 Sally McCall

It had not been my intention to see Janet and Berry off. I didn't think I could bear to see them leave. But as the hour of their departure approached, Ruth must have seen me keeping an eye on the clock. At first, I declined her offer to let me take a few minutes off. I argued that it was the middle of our rush hour. She whispered something to Ben, and he ordered me to get out of his kitchen, adding that he was concerned that in my present state of mind, I was an accident waiting to...

October 29, 2000, Chicago, Illinois Birgit followed me as far as the stairs, then scooted upstairs when I went to the front door and opened it. “Hi!” Sophie said. “Hi!” I replied and held the door open so she could come into the house. May 11, 1992, Chicago, Illinois Monday was turning out to be a LONG day. After my run and talk with Gina, and my talk with Elyse, I had a full day at the office scheduled. First was our leadership meeting in the morning, and then I had status meetings with each team. At lunch I’d gone to see Siobhán and explained that I was going to break off the sexual relationship, but that I wanted to remain friends. January 19, 1989, En-Route from LAX to ORD When the engines of the plane started, Jeri reached over and took my hand. She held it while we pushed away from the gate, and taxied for takeoff. Her grip tightened a bit as we hurtled down the runway, but nothing like the death grip she’d had on my arm for the flight out. The plane roared its way into the air and once we leveled out, Jeri’s grip loosened but she didn’t let go of my hand. “How are you doing?” I asked with a touch of...

September 1982, Chicago, Illinois The weekend was quiet and besides homework, I worked on the program changes for Frank, called Karin, Tatyana, and Kara, and hung out with my usual study group. Monday was refreshingly normal. On Tuesday morning, I handed Katy my completed intake form. She put it in an envelope and stuck it in her bag. She said she’d let me know soon about the interview. October 1982, Chicago, Illinois The drive back to Chicago was as uneventful as usual, and I arrived at the apartment just before 6:00pm. Stephie hopped up as I opened the door and greeted me with a hug and a kiss. “Hi, Peaches!” I said. “Glad you’re home, Yankee!” “Hi, Steve,” Elyse and Jackie both said. “Hey,” I replied. “How was the weekend?” “Well, it was just Kurt with me, Stephie,...

June 11, 1989, Chicago, Illinois It was just after 3:00am when I kissed Trish goodbye. She’d been an enthusiastic, energetic, and adventurous lover. We’d done just about anything either of us could think of, though her breasts weren’t large enough for a tit-fuck. The last time had been in the shower where we’d ostensibly gone to clean up afterwards, but instead I ended up taking her from behind as she leaned against the wall of the shower. “I think I’ll have you again, Steve Adams,” she...

May 1978 The first couple of weeks in May were busy with school, work, and friends. Except for Becky, I didn’t even have any dates. But I was OK with that. Well, almost OK. I wanted to see Anna, but it likely wasn’t going to happen until school was out. I had tutoring sessions with Melanie, but she still wouldn’t talk to me about anything other than Spanish. Barely a hello. I was grateful for the tutoring, but it was maddening seeing my friend this way. I hoped someday she could understand...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 44 Spring Break 1982 Part I

March, 1982, Milford, Ohio As I drove along I-65, I thought about what Stephanie had asked for and what Bethany had said without even knowing about the request. Of course, because Bethany and I were so in tune, she might have actually had an idea that I was struggling with getting involved with my sister again. I kept turning it over and over in my mind and I kept coming to the same conclusion — that I shouldn’t do it. I was torn between doing what Stephanie wanted and doing what Kara and...

June 29, 1995, Chicago, Illinois On Thursday, I finally had lunch with Melissa again, something I hadn’t been looking forward to. The Strawberry Patch Book 3 Life On The SavannahChapter 15 The Holiday Stories Halloween

Halloween is a silly holiday. People dress up in silly outfits and beg for candy. We live in a spread-out neighborhood that is part up-scale homes and part farm homes. Any trick or treating to be done had to be done using transportation. Several of our neighbors had a golf cart that they used to haul garden stuff around their property, they didn’t make golf carts big enough for the Herd, so we used the 16-passenger van we had decided to buy, and we drove the Herd from house to house in...

You know, when you read "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" with a modern understanding of science, as a person who understands chemistry, biology, and psychology, the rational part of your mind will tell you it's not possible. That it makes for a fun story, but you could not drink a potion and transform either physically or mentally like the title character of that book. You can't change yourself like that. But the irrational part, oh it wishes you could. It looks at...
