The only surprise the game provided was the margin of our victory. Our first goal came on a corner-kick set piece that we’d practiced quite a few times in the past few weeks but had never used in a game. I kicked a left-footed out-swinger that I managed to get right on my target, Rhee’s head. She headed it to Katie, who headed it into the net. Katie got the second assist, making an incredibly precise pass that threaded through the Weldon D to a breaking Rhee. In addition to leading a bruising D, Meka also got her first state-tournament goal, on a situation typical of her. She intercepted a pass that she had anticipated and took off upfield. Civia stepped up, looked around at our silent team, smiled slightly, then said, “Attagirls to Beth, Rhee, and Katie for finally getting to do the BRK corner kick in a game and getting a goal out of it. That was superbly done. Attagirls to Gracey and Rachel for backing up Shameka when she slipped and fell and cut off their striker before she could shoot. Particularly important there was Rachel toeing the ball away right to Gracey. That got her and Gracey additional attagirls, as Gracey collected that soft pass, carried it upfield for a couple dribbles, then sent the ball up to Katie. Katie gets an extra-special attagirl for carrying it across midfield, then somehow sending a pass upfield through two layers of D to a breaking Rhee. Had Rhee missed that shot, she wouldn’t have gotten an attagirl, but a reserved place on the portion of the bench with all the splinters.”
There was much laughing.
Civia looked around her audience with a large grin on her face. Rhee stepped up to her, wrapped one arm around her pulling her in tightly, then gave her a noogie.
There was more laughing.
After we quieted, she continued with, “An attagirl goes to Shameka who did one of her typical nearly-one-woman fast breaks for her eleventh goal of the season which, if I understand correctly, is nearly three times the number of goals she scored in her previous three years on the team. Finally, as noted by Coach, Rose, Marla, Emma, and Abby all earned attagirls for 15 minutes of shutout D after Coach pulled the starting back line. You guys did a great job.”
Civia stepped back and Liya stepped forward.
“From what we’ve heard, Delta-North was ahead 4-1 midway through the second half, so we’ve got them at 3:15 this afternoon. Since I know that some are interested, Tanaka did get Petaluma’s goal. Our bus will leave here for the hotel in 25 minutes, so expedite your showers. The school has paid for our lunch in the same room in which we had dinner last night, so everyone ... and I mean everyone... [she looked around at all of us] is expected to be there at noon.” She eyed us all again, then added, “We will all pick up our laundered uniforms from yesterday’s game at the entrance to the room where we’ll be eating. If you’re late, you might not get your uniform back, so will not be permitted to play this afternoon.”
When there was a bit of grumbling, Liya said sharply, “Settle!”
“There’s no need for grumbling. Simply be at the entrance to the room at noon or a little before and pick up the uniform that you did not have to wash and then eat lunch that you did not have to buy and thank the school for both.”
Liya looked around again, then stepped back. Civia stepped forward.
“For her lovely goal and particularly for leading a superb defensive effort, the game ball goes to Shameka Johnson!”
After the cheering died down, Coach stated, “I have nothing else to add, other than to second Liya’s comments about being on time at the dining room. Showers! Now!”
When we got to the hotel, Dad and the Moms told us they were going out for lunch and that they would see us before our late checkout before 2 pm. Lunch was quite good, a Mexican buffet.
We got a surprise in the locker room before the afternoon game when Coach shouted, “Gracey, front and center.”
We all turned to see Joyce Tanaka next to Coach as Gracey stepped over to them.
“Hi, Gracey. I wanted to check on you, make sure you were okay. I hated that I was the cause of your injury, even though I didn’t at all mean to have happen what happened. Your coach was kind enough to allow me to tell you that, personally.”
“Thanks, Joyce. Beth told me that you were concerned at the time. I’m fine, and I appreciate your visit and concern. You know, I wish you guys had won this morning, as we know you better than Delta-North, and they look nearly unbeatable. Of course, we’ll still give it our all, as we believe that we can beat them, but it will take our absolutely best game.”
“Yeah, that’s an incredibly good team and I’m glad you’re playing, as Elkton-Central can’t play it’s absolutely best game without you on the pitch.”
“Thanks for your words. May I,’ Gracey asked as she opened her arms toward Joyce.
When Joyce nodded, they hugged.
When they separated, Gracey said, “Good luck in college. Where are you going? Or do you know?”
Joyce nodded, saying, “I’m coming to Elkton.”
“Really? We know one of the women on the soccer team: Andressa Pires. She’s Brazilian. You need to stay in touch with us and let us know when you get to town. We’d love to have you over for dinner when you get there.”
