Within minutes, a dark sedan drove up and a heavyset middle-aged black woman wearing a nametag with a CPS logo and identifying her as Charlene McDermott got out and took Megan by the arm.
"We are going to go have a little talk with your parents. If there is any possibility that they knew about your activities, you will become a ward of the state."

Charlene turned around to get some forms from the file cabinet behind her and Megan thought she might have a chance to escape. She quietly stood up from the chair that Charlene had pushed her into a few minutes before and stepped to the door. Meanwhile, the Chief of Police, the Mayor, the arresting officer, and the Assistant District Attorney were giving a statement to the newspaper, all the while congratulating each other for making the streets safer for children.

At 6 PM, Detective Peter Alban arrived home. "Mr. and Mrs. Thomas? I'm Assistant District Attorney Adams and I have a warrant for your arrest on a charge of child endangerment."
Megan's dad looked incredulous, "Child endangerment? What child?"

"And when did this so-called endangerment occur?"
"Just this morning. Now, we'll have plenty of time to discuss this when we get downtown. Just come along peacefully and we'll have no trouble."
"Just a second, Counselor. Would you care to explain how we can be charged with endangering Megan when she isn't a child?"
"Well, of course she is a child. I've seen her. Not more than thirteen, I'd guess."
Megan's mother was indignant, "You guess wrong, and we can prove it. Come with me, I have her birth certificate and medical records that will prove she is nineteen years old. She just turned nineteen a couple of weeks ago."
One of the officers followed her as she went into the den and got a folder out of the file cabinet.
As ADA Adams read the file, he began to loose his confidence and to sweat. His thoughts raced, "Perhaps everyone had jumped the gun. The girl has claimed all along that she was nineteen. Didn't those fool detectives check? Shit! How am I going to get out of this one and not loose my job?"
"Um, perhaps there has been an error made here, Mrs. Thomas."
"You are god-damned right there has been an error. Sally, call Megan's apartment and see if she is alright," Megan's dad commanded.
The ADA meekly said that he didn't think they would find Megan at home.
"Now where is Megan? If you have put her into some sort of facility or foster care because you didn't believe her when she told you her age — she did tell everyone she was nineteen, didn't she? — then you people are in for a lawsuit you won't believe."
"I—I—I'm very sorry for all of this, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas. We'll get this straightened out right away," Adams stammered as he motioned to the uniforms and backed out of the front door.
"... that's right, City Hall, the DA's conference room as soon as possible. The Police Chief, the Mayor, the DA, at least one of those idiot detectives, and, um, oh yes that fat black bitch, what's her name, McDermott? From CPS. I'll be there in ten minutes." ADA Adams flipped his cell phone closed and tromped on the gas pedal as if speeding dangerously through the quiet little town would make this all go away.
When he arrived, the Chief and the DA were waiting for him, all questions about what was happening, but the ADA was adamant about wanting to only tell the story once. Charlene McDermott arrived five minutes later just ahead of Detective Johnson. The group stood around and stared at each other for another three minutes until the Mayor arrived.
"This better be fucking good, Adams, or I'm going to have your ass on a plate."
"It isn't good, Your Honor, but it is important. We have some serious damage control to do, and we need to start right fucking now."
He briefly explained that Megan Thomas was, in fact, nineteen years old and that her parents had documentation to prove it. The whole system had screwed up and the city, county, and state were liable for damages that he couldn't even imagine.
The District Attorney looked quickly around the room and then began to take charge, first directing his attention to the CPS representative, "Ms. McDermott, I understand that Ms. Thomas is currently in state custody in the foster care system, is that correct?"

Chief, you and Detective Johnson get down to the jail, get that innocent man out of the lockup and get him to the emergency room for treatment. Johnson, you stay with him until you can return here in person with a full report of his condition. I understand that he had an 'accident' while in custody. Adams, you get busy and start researching ways to limit the city's liability. While you are at it, draft a letter of apology to all of the parties concerned, including the girl's parents. Will you sign such a letter, Mr. Mayor?"
Chapter 8: RetributionIt was nearly 9:30 PM when Charlene knocked on the Alban's front door.
"God, I hope you didn't start your punishments yet, Pete," she said, knowing from the expression on his face that it was too late.
