July 10, 1992, Chicago and Glencoe, Illinois

“Be very careful, Tiger,” Jessica said on Friday afternoon.

“I will,” I said. “I just want answers to my questions.”

“Will you be able to trust those answers?”

“That’s a good question,” I said. “All I can do is see what she has to say, if anything.”

“You said that her dad thought she’d talk to you.”

“But he wasn’t completely sure. She didn’t tell him ‘no’ outright. It’s as we discussed - she’s an emotionally immature seventeen-year-old. Jesse is more mature than she is in some ways.”

“True. Promise me you won’t do anything stupid.”

“Jess, this is the ‘new’ me. Not the old one. I told you about my calls with Jeri and Lisa.”

“What are you going to do about Jeri?” Kara asked.

“Just what I said to you two earlier. I have to wait to see what Samantha says.”

We kissed and hugged, and I got into my brand new BMW, which the leasing company had exchanged for my old one earlier in the morning. I very much enjoyed having the two-year lease, as it meant a new car on a regular basis. We’d decided to keep Jessica’s BMW and Kara’s minivan, so I’d simply exchanged keys, signed some paperwork, and I had a new car. I started the engine, took a deep breath of ‘new car smell’, then put the car in gear and pulled away.

As I drove, I thought about what I was doing. Elyse had stopped me before I left to make sure I kept my head on straight. I’d promised her I wouldn’t take any action with regard to Jeri without talking to her first. She’d reminded me to keep my wits about me and not act rashly. I’d reminded her, as I had just done with Jessica, that this was the ‘new’ me.

That said, I had, as it turned out, acted rashly in getting into the relationship with Samantha. I’d seen the clues, and I’d even tried to put the brakes on, but as I’d recently learned, once you passed certain inflection points, some of them were points of no return. Putting the djinni back in the bottle was impossible. If only I’d waited to have sex with Samantha until I got to know her better, things might have been different.

I’d acted rashly, and that was my contribution to the mess that I was trying to unravel. I knew the relevant details of Lisa’s part. I also knew some of Jeri’s and, probably, a bit of Samantha’s. The more Samantha was willing to talk to me, the more I’d know about her, and the more I’d know about Jeri’s part. And of all of the people involved, Jeri seemed to be the one that might have the biggest negative impact on me.

There was a fairly big chance that there would be holes in the story and places where they didn’t line up. In that case, I’d have to make a judgment call as to who or what was truthful. And that created its own set of problems. From a purely pragmatic perspective, it made the most sense to give Jeri every benefit of the doubt and retain her as a NIKA employee, no matter what her part in the fiasco was. It would all depend on just how much she had betrayed me, if she had done so.

“Steve Adams to see Noel Spurgeon,” I said at the gate.

Abbie had taken care of returning the deactivated transmitter for the gate, so I had to wait until I was acknowledged and the gate was opened remotely. When it swung open, I drove up the driveway to the same parking spot I’d used the previous times I’d been to visit. As usual, Les greeted me at the front door.

“Mr. Spurgeon will see you in his study,” Les said.

He walked me to the study, announced me, then left, closing the door behind him. Noel Spurgeon shook my hand and offered me a drink. I accepted a bourbon and he poured himself one as well.

“I’m sorry you were caught up in the girls’ schemes,” he said.

“You say that like it’s a normal thing,” I replied.

“Let’s just say it’s not uncommon.”

“May I be blunt?” I asked.

“That usually works best.”

“Why would you possibly accept the idea of your daughter carrying on with a married man?”

“Because my daughter makes her own decisions. She has since she was little. I don’t have to approve of her choices. This was what she wanted, so she did it.”

“Don’t you think that’s a bit too cavalier an attitude?” I asked.

“As we’re speaking plainly, you were pretty cavalier about bedding my daughter. It does take two to tango.”

I nodded, “Very true. And I agree with you, but likely for different reasons.”

“Go on.”

“My mistake was not realizing how immature your daughter is, and what a cynical view she had of business and relationships. The immaturity is the bigger problem, but both are significant. I’m probably going to regret saying this, but your daughter needed your love, not your money. That’s the source of this problem.”

“I love my daughter,” he said.

“I have no doubt in my mind that you believe that. But I don’t see any signs of it. I see a spoiled brat who thinks she can buy anything and bully anyone to achieve what she wants, and who was never denied a thing growing up. I believe love shows in the denial. I believe love means saying ‘no’. When you love your child enough NOT to give into their every whim.”

“Money is power. It always has been. It always will be.”

“I’m sure that’s true. I’ve studied enough history to know it. And I’m a capitalist at heart. But, to me, capitalism without some kind of empathy for your fellow man is evil. If it becomes merely a zero-sum-game, then eventually the masses will rise up and take everything from you. A ‘beggar-thy-neighbor’ approach will destroy everyone.

“You know I made a deal with Alec Glass. You also know, I’m sure, that his REIT was teetering on the brink of being in violation of the regulations regarding REITs. I could have held him up for a better deal. I didn’t. And I didn’t because it’s not a zero sum game about me winning and him losing. We both won. I got what I needed and wanted. He got what he needed and wanted. And we both walked away happy.

“Enter Lisa. She felt I’d showed weakness and decided she could use that against me. She was wrong, because my approach to capitalism doesn’t require a winner and a loser. Mine requires two winners. As I told her, that’s not weakness, but strength. The personal strength and integrity to resist hurting someone for my own gain, when the gain was simple and easy to grasp. She found out just how strong I am in reality. She was using the wrong measure and her mistake cost her, dearly.”

“An interesting perspective. I don’t agree with you, though. You will be taken advantage of because people will see you as an easy mark. And in the long run, you’ll be left with nothing.”

I smiled, “That’s what Lisa thought. She failed to realize that I am also the most ruthless, cold-hearted bastard on the planet when it’s called for. I don’t fight fire with fire. If you bring a knife, I’ll bring a gun. If you put me in the hospital, I’ll put you in the morgue. The way to resolve a problem such as you described is the immediate application of overwhelming, disproportional force an immediate favorable end to the conflict. And that is what I did with Lisa.”

“You quoted The Untouchables. I’ll remind you that the gun versus knife was resolved by a bigger gun.”

“Because Connery’s character should have just shot the guy with the knife right then and there. Immediate application of overwhelming force. His hesitation to shoot cost him his life.”

“Interesting. Samantha said you opposed the Gulf War. Isn’t that what we did there?”

I nodded, “And you felt we didn’t go far enough. I don’t even want to contemplate your daughter’s solution.”

Noel Spurgeon laughed hard, “But that fits your doctrine.”

“My doctrine said not to get involved in the first place. Or even better, not have complete morons like April Glaspie make idiotic statements of weakness. That was the problem with Carter. Everyone saw him as weak, so they messed with him. Nobody thought of Reagan as weak. Lisa miscalculated based on not having enough information. Getting back to the matter at hand, I made a grave error in judgment because your daughter wasn’t mature enough to handle an actual adult relationship.”

“Relationship? How much do you talk to your mistress? I don’t!”

I shook my head, “And that’s another area where we differ. I assume you’ve heard about my situation? The complex family arrangement I have?”

“Yes. Which is why you didn’t have to hide what you were doing with Samantha.”

“Very true. But it’s also the case that I can get laid as often as I want. I have a fairly liberal ‘hall pass’ and my wives not only know about it, but accept it. I don’t HAVE to hide it. Ever. So if I have, in effect, the entire playing field at my disposal, why would I want to make the arrangement with Samantha I did?”

“You’ve lost me. What was your arrangement with my daughter?”

“That other than the women I live with, I’d be exclusive with your daughter. But that was contingent on developing an actual relationship. One that involved really getting to know each other, spending time together, and insofar as she was willing, bringing her into my family.”

Noel just stared at me. I’d left him speechless. He clearly had a VERY different picture of what was going on. That meant Samantha hadn’t explained to him what I’d wanted, OR, she’d never intended to develop things along the lines I’d proposed. I didn’t think that was true because I’d seen signs of her responding to being loved.

He was still silent, so I continued, “I showed her I loved her by saying ‘no’ to her on several occasions. She was just learning what that meant when Lisa interfered. In my opinion, Lisa saw that Samantha had actually found love and that made Lisa green with envy and she decided to wreck it in whatever way she could.”

“Love? We’re talking about an affair here, Steve! Samantha was your mistress, for God’s sake!”

“It’s way more complicated than you realize. I’m not IN LOVE with your daughter, but I do love her. There’s a world of difference. It’s complicated and if you have a few hours, I can try to explain, but the bottom line is that true love is way deeper than being ‘in love’. I love my wife deeply, but I’ve never for one second since I’ve known her been ‘in love’ with her. I know that sounds strange, but it’s true.

“I come from a completely different world than you do, where money doesn’t define relationships and doesn’t mean power. For me, it means a way to care for my family and ensure their lives are comfortable. Beyond that? I don’t put any value on it. Yes, I invest. Yes, I save. But I do that to ensure future comfort, not because I have some need to be fabulously wealthy or gain power or whatever. Just don’t mistake THAT for weakness.”

“You’re pretty ballsy coming into my house, drinking my bourbon, and lecturing me on how to live my life.”

I smiled, “I have nothing to lose and everything to gain.”

“You’re going about it in an odd way. Coming in here and telling me I failed as a father isn’t exactly a good way to endear yourself.”

“You’re right. It’s not. But it’s my way. And if I’m going to have any kind of relationship with Samantha, as a friend, then she’s going to have to change from the ‘pretentious bitch’ who’s a spoiled brat. If not, then I won’t want anything to do with her, even as a casual acquaintance. I already told Lisa I won’t have anything to do with her except for the absolute minimum necessary to complete the REIT deal. I simply don’t have time in my life for people with her attitude.”

“Didn’t you agree with me that everything has a price?”

“No, I agreed everything has value. There’s always a value proposition, but that doesn’t have to be money, which is what you mean by ‘price’. There are things in this world that can’t be had for all of the proverbial tea in China.”

“I suspect I could offer you enough money to get you to do anything I asked.”

“And you would suspect wrong. I won’t kill for money. On the other hand, seriously threaten someone I love or have promised to protect, and I’ll put you in the ground before you can blink. Money has no value in that circumstance. And that’s just an easy thing that comes to mind. There are indeed things you simply can’t buy. That’s what Samantha needs to learn. I guess you do as well.”

“Who the fuck are you to talk to me this way?”

“Nobody special, really. You gave me permission to speak bluntly, so I did. If you’d like for me to leave, I will. And if you want me to go back to using Charles Schwab, I will. Some prices are just too high to pay.”

He regarded me for a moment and I just kept quiet. Ultimately, I had nothing to lose, and I wanted to define this relationship on MY terms, not his. I suspected very few people ever spoke to him this way, and perhaps nobody had in years. And in that moment I discovered something else.

I needed someone like me to talk to ME this way. But obviously, it had to be someone who didn’t agree with me and who was willing to speak plainly to me even when I didn’t want them to. It was true that I’d had Elyse, Jennifer, Bethany, and others close to me who would do it, but it wasn’t the same. I needed someone outside the ‘inner circle’ to, as it were, speak the truth to power. That had to be my next goal.

“If you ever want to change jobs, you can come work for me. You’d be a real hard-nosed bastard when it came to evaluating deals and negotiating terms.”

“But I don’t seek enough advantage!” I said.

“No, but you sure as hell wouldn’t let the other guy get an advantage!”

He did have a point. I’d done that with Dante on several occasions. And that had been where I’d discovered that I did have some skills in the area, and that I liked the negotiation, so long as it was amicable. Dante was just on the edge of amicability, but he had been good practice for the confrontations I’d faced in the last month.

“True. But I’m happy where I am right now. Hell, I’d be happier if I could just be a programmer again and leave all this crap to someone else.”

“But you’re damned good at it. Nobody has talked to me the way you just did since, well, I can’t remember.”

“Because I have nothing to lose. I could just let it all hang out and not worry about it. I would likely have needed to be more circumspect in other circumstances.”

“I guess there’s only one question left on the table.”

“Which is?”

“What are your intentions towards my daughter?” he asked with a wry smile.

A WellLived Life 2 Book 5 MichelleChapter 78 Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous Part II

May 15, 1992, Glencoe, Illinois “Join me in my study, if you would,” Noel Spurgeon said when we finished our dessert. It had been an interesting evening. Samantha and I had talked for a bit before we’d been summoned to dinner. The meal had been prepared by a chef and was served by a white-coated young man. Again, this was a far cry from Lois at the van Hoeks’ house. What wasn’t a far cry was the fact that I was having dinner with a man who knew I was going to be sleeping with his daughter...

The Book of Truth

John loved when he found a new bookstore. There was just something so exciting about walking into a dusty old room that smelled of dry paper and was full of endless possibilities. In most instances those possibilities resolved into Pulp novels from the 50's, old men playing chess in some back room, and if you were unlucky an owner with hygiene habits that ranked slightly worse than a medieval peasant's. Sometimes though you'd find treasure. Last month alone John had found an original copy of...

A WellLived Life Book 4 BethanyChapter 12 Truth and Consequences Part II

July-August 1980, Milford, Ohio On Sunday morning, Stephanie and I swam and ate breakfast before she went to church with mom. I had thought about going to church, but really had no interest in doing so. I suspected Mom would have had quite a bit to say about me going to church given my ‘sinful, immoral, and deviant’ lifestyle. It really wasn’t worth the trouble for something I didn’t think was all that important. I made my usual weekly call to Karin and had a nice chat with her. We couldn’t...

A WellLived Life Book 10 The WifeChapter 9 The Truth the Whole Truth and Nothing but the Truth

New Year’s Eve, 1984, Chicago, Illinois “Are you sure you want to hear it?” she said, almost inaudibly. “Yes, Jennifer. This time I want the whole truth. And I mean all of it, with nothing left out. No lies. No deception. No obfuscation.” “I guess it starts when I was in fifth grade.” “Fifth grade? Not with Chris Jones in seventh grade?” “No. Fifth. I was at a sleepover with some friends. I got up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. The door was closed, but it wasn’t locked...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 34 And Nothing But The Truth

February 11, 1989, Chicago, Illinois Our drive from Syracuse to Chicago was mostly uneventful. There was some construction on the Ohio Turnpike that slowed us down, but otherwise, we listened to music, mostly alternative rock, and talked. The bulk of the conversation had been about my history with my sister, how it had started, what I thought had happened and why, and how it had progressed. I knew Jessica was extremely uncomfortable with the situation, but she’d agreed that we could work...

October 1981, Chicago, Illinois I arrived back at the apartment just before 10:00pm and saw the address for the party. I decided I wasn’t particularly interested in going so I put on some music, poured myself a glass of wine, and started reading more about Russia. I was alternating between the history and culture book and the Communist Party book, decided on the history and culture book for this time. I didn’t get much reading done because I was thinking about Tatyana, which led me to...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 33 The Whole Truth

February 10, 1989, Syracuse, New York After the revelation about my sister, and the promise that it would never start again, we’d drifted into a conversation about how things had been going back home since Jessica had left. I told her about work, karate, and the things that had been going on in everyone else’s life, but avoided discussing any of the girls that I’d been with. I’d decided I was going to completely level with Jess on the topic, though I felt the conversation could wait. We...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 7 SakurakoChapter 57 Land of the Rising Sun Part III

June 23, 1994, Oguni, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan My first week in Japan flew by, and a routine developed. Sakurako would wake me; I’d exercise and run, then shower and have breakfast, and share tea with Sakurako. After breakfast, I’d meditate, and then have my training session. After lunch, I’d work in the garden, or, as I had this day, wash the floors in the house. Hiroshi would accompany me back to the cottage and we’d talk while I washed up and dressed for dinner. After dinner, I’d spend...

April 22, 2000, Chicago, Illinois “How can they do that?!” Maria Cristina demanded, completely outraged. “The same way they could murder the Branch Davidians,” I replied. “After burning 76 people to death, including women and children, I’d say kidnapping a child at gunpoint and forcing him to return to a totalitarian country is nothing.” “That woman is pure evil,” Elyse said. “I don’t call her ‘Janet Sterno’ for nothing,” I said. “America should really reconsider its policy towards...

February 5, 1993, Chicago, Illinois Jamie called on Friday morning to let me know that the CPD had obtained a search warrant for Hart-Lincoln as we’d discussed with the FBI, and intended to serve it as soon as Greg was available. I told him I’d call Greg, then call him back with a time. A WellLived Life Book 10 The WifeChapter 14 Katherine Victoria Will

January, 1985, Chicago, Illinois I arrived back in Hyde Park about ten minutes before the end of the Super Bowl. It didn’t look like it had been much of a contest, given that the score was 38-16, with San Francisco trouncing Miami. I grabbed a Coke and some chips and sat down on the couch next to Julia and Dave. In the room, besides my housemates, were Jamie, Kenneth, Kurt, Kathy, Jorge, George, Charlie, Bert, and Wen. “Julia, I got approval from both guys in Cincinnati,” I said. She...

June 1977 When I got home, I grabbed a Coke and some chips and went right to my room. I didn’t think I could deal with my parents or Jeff or Stephanie. I just needed to be by myself. That wouldn’t seem odd to anyone, because I often went to my room to read. In addition, I now had the TV I’d received for my birthday. July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I woke up early on the First of July, because my body clock was still set to Swedish time. The flight back had been long but uneventful, and I was happy that the businessman in the seat next to me hadn’t wanted to talk. I read, wrote some longhand journal entries, ate, and generally relaxed while the plane zipped over the Atlantic. March 25, 2000, Chicago, Illinois “What time do I need to have you home?” “8:00pm will be fine,” Misty replied. “My parents are in Normal visiting my brother at Illinois State. They aren’t supposed to be home before 10:00pm.” Misty and I were in my car on the way to the NIKA apartment which, fortunately, was not being used. With our expansion, it was in more or less regular use, and that meant I didn’t have access to it as often as I would have liked. I was glad there had been a delay in...

Sins from my Stepmother Book 1 Ch 15

I My name is Teddy Carlson. I’m twenty-two years old and I fucked my stepmother. Not just once in some momentary lapse of judgement. But again and again…and again. Before you judge me, there’s a few things you need to understand. First, Dad and I never exactly got on like a house on fire. He was the CIO of a large hedge fund which meant that he wasn’t around much. He travelled to Europe regularly and commuted during the week to Manhattan for meetings. When he was home, he was either...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 7 Setting the Course of My Life

June 1977 Friday ended up being a non-event. The more I thought about it, the more I was sure that there was no way on this earth I could say what happened between Birgit and me was a sin. Calling it a sin would debase it into a meaningless act. I could never do that. And the more I thought about Jennie McGrath, the more sure I was that I couldn’t call what she did for me a sin, either. If the church was right, I was going to hell. And frankly, there was no way that could be true. So I...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 20 It Happened One Night

January 17, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “What time do you have to leave this morning?” Kara asked as we showered together on Tuesday morning. “About 8:30am,” I said. “I’m driving over to get Jeri, then heading to O’Hare. We have an 11:00am flight. Assuming all goes well, we’ll be in the office by 3:00pm Pacific time. We’ll spend a couple hours going over the software then go to dinner. The demo is tomorrow. Our flight back on Thursday leaves LA at 11:00am, so we’ll be home by 8:00pm, I...

May 14, 1997, Chicago, Illinois “Start talking!” Melanie demanded when I sat down in her office about an hour later. “There isn’t much to say. Katya found the information for me when I asked her to look into several things about Brandon Littleton, Kevin Lomax, and John Milton.” “Do you know more about him?” “A LOT more. I don’t think you want to know.” “Probably not, but I’m your criminal defense attorney, and even though San Antonio doesn’t have you involved in this, you know the CPD...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 32 The Truth

February 10, 1989, To and from Lewiston, Maine Every minute took me closer to Jessica. As the miles fell away, listening to an ‘alternative rock’ station which Abbie had suggested, I thought about the previous night. Abbie had stayed until about 5:45am, when she’d left to go to her room so she could shower and dress. I’d gone down to breakfast, and she’d acted as if nothing had happened the previous night, most likely due to her parents’ presence. She’d simply waved and said goodbye when I...

The Three Signs Book 2 LoriChapter 28 Live at the Lifesaver

“So, how should we do these Stone’s songs?” Phil asked at our rehearsal session. “I think we all know the music, we just need to come up with a pretty awesome arrangement; we don’t want to sound like yet another cheap cover band.” “I had some ideas, if it’s okay for me to make some suggestions,” Allison said. “Of course it is,” Phil said. “Everyone can have a say, there’s no rule that says you can’t participate in the discussion.” “Thanks, Phil, I guess being the newest here, I’m a bit...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 5 MichelleChapter 77 Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous Part I

May 11, 1992, Chicago, Illinois Monday was turning out to be a LONG day. After my run and talk with Gina, and my talk with Elyse, I had a full day at the office scheduled. First was our leadership meeting in the morning, and then I had status meetings with each team. At lunch I’d gone to see Siobhán and explained that I was going to break off the sexual relationship, but that I wanted to remain friends. She was disappointed, but admitted that Thursday would have been the last time, since she...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 23 So Now You Turn Back Into Diana Prince

January 19, 1989, En-Route from LAX to ORD When the engines of the plane started, Jeri reached over and took my hand. She held it while we pushed away from the gate, and taxied for takeoff. Her grip tightened a bit as we hurtled down the runway, but nothing like the death grip she’d had on my arm for the flight out. The plane roared its way into the air and once we leveled out, Jeri’s grip loosened but she didn’t let go of my hand. “How are you doing?” I asked with a touch of...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 16 A Southern Belle a Surprise Proposal two Cheerleaders an Old Flame and a Girl Back Home Part I

October 1981, Chicago, Illinois I went to my room, closed the door and dialed my old number in Milford and Stephanie answered. “Hi, Stephanie!” “Hey, Big Bro! How’s Chicago?” “Pretty good. A lot of stuff is happening. But I have a favor to ask. Well, really, it’s a favor from Ed. I’m coming home this weekend and I was wondering if I could borrow the keys to the apartment.” “You and Kara? On Saturday? I’m sure the answer is yes. Where are you staying?” “I was going to call Mrs. Spencer...

A WellLived Life Book 7 Kara IIChapter 34 Old Routines and New Ideas

September 1982, Chicago, Illinois The weekend was quiet and besides homework, I worked on the program changes for Frank, called Karin, Tatyana, and Kara, and hung out with my usual study group. Monday was refreshingly normal. On Tuesday morning, I handed Katy my completed intake form. She put it in an envelope and stuck it in her bag. She said she’d let me know soon about the interview. On Tuesday afternoon, after having lunch with Stephie, I made my rounds and then I headed over to Sigma...

A WellLived Life Book 7 Kara IIChapter 35 An Interview and Some New Friends

October 1982, Chicago, Illinois The drive back to Chicago was as uneventful as usual, and I arrived at the apartment just before 6:00pm. When I arrived, Elyse and Stephie were sitting on the couch and Jackie was sitting on the loveseat. Stephie hopped up as I opened the door and greeted me with a hug and a kiss. “Hi, Peaches!” I said. “Glad you’re home, Yankee!” “Hi, Steve,” Elyse and Jackie both said. “Hey,” I replied. “How was the weekend?” “Well, it was just Kurt with me, Stephie,...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 6 SamanthaChapter 20 Get Thee to a Nunnery

September 4, 1992, Chicago, Illinois “These are really interesting pieces,” I said to Siobhán. Kimmy, Elyse, and I were reviewing the two completed pieces that she’d done as examples of what the series would look like. “You don’t like them?” Siobhán asked pensively. “No, I do! Why would you think I didn’t?” “Usually when someone says ‘interesting’ about abstract art it means they don’t like it.” “Sorry, in this case I meant it. Maybe ‘intriguing’ would have been a better word.” She...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 8 NIKAChapter 68 The Rules

June 29, 1995, Chicago, Illinois On Thursday, I finally had lunch with Melissa again, something I hadn’t been looking forward to. Much like with Cèlia, Melissa and I had passed an inflection point and I was left with sub-optimal paths forward. I’d been struggling with the possible solutions, and all of them had pitfalls. When I walked into Takumi, I had something of a plan. Whether it was good or not would only be known once everything played out. “I spoke to my wives,” I said after we’d...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 52 Lifestyle Choices

June 11, 1989, Chicago, Illinois It was just after 3:00am when I kissed Trish goodbye. She’d been an enthusiastic, energetic, and adventurous lover. We’d done just about anything either of us could think of, though her breasts weren’t large enough for a tit-fuck. The last time had been in the shower where we’d ostensibly gone to clean up afterwards, but instead I ended up taking her from behind as she leaned against the wall of the shower. “I think I’ll have you again, Steve Adams,” she...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 38 Freshman Year Ends

May 1978 The first couple of weeks in May were busy with school, work, and friends. Except for Becky, I didn’t even have any dates. But I was OK with that. Well, almost OK. I wanted to see Anna, but it likely wasn’t going to happen until school was out. I had tutoring sessions with Melanie, but she still wouldn’t talk to me about anything other than Spanish. Barely a hello. I was grateful for the tutoring, but it was maddening seeing my friend this way. I hoped someday she could understand...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 44 Spring Break 1982 Part I

March, 1982, Milford, Ohio As I drove along I-65, I thought about what Stephanie had asked for and what Bethany had said without even knowing about the request. Of course, because Bethany and I were so in tune, she might have actually had an idea that I was struggling with getting involved with my sister again. I kept turning it over and over in my mind and I kept coming to the same conclusion — that I shouldn’t do it. I was torn between doing what Stephanie wanted and doing what Kara and...

You were messing with me, weren’t you?” She grabbed both my hands and smiled, “I was telling the truth, in my own way. Thank you!” She leaned forward and kissed my cheek. “So, what’s left?” I asked. “To visit UofC tomorrow and formally withdraw from classes. To spend some time with you and your...

August 15, 2000, Chicago, Illinois “Whoa!” Cynthia declared, as she turned the pages in The New Joy of Sex. “All these positions! I want to try them!” She was paging through the section of the book which had lots of illustrations. “Wait!” she gasped, as she turned the page. “Bondage? Whoa! He has her tied to the bed!” “That might be fun,” I grinned. “And then I can tie YOU to the bed?” she asked with a silly smirk. “I suppose turn-about is fair play.” “And threesomes?” “That might not...

January 23, 1996, Chicago, Illinois “Father, bless!” I said, greeting Father Basil with upturned palms. “Bless you, Stephen,” he said as I kissed his hand. The waiter showed us to a quiet table along the wall of Roditys in Greektown. He took our drink orders and was back quickly. We placed our food orders right away and he left to put them in with the kitchen. “I’m not quite sure how to address this, so I’m just going to ask you bluntly. March 1980, Hovås/Göteborg, Sweden I woke early as usual, but just enjoyed being in bed with Katt. When she woke, she hopped out of bed and pulled a robe out of her closet and handed it to me. “There’s a spare toothbrush in the bathroom. October 29, 2000, Chicago, Illinois Birgit followed me as far as the stairs, then scooted upstairs when I went to the front door and opened it. “Hi!” Sophie said. “Hi!” I replied and held the door open so she could come into the house. I closed the door behind her then led her to my study where I waited until she went in, and then walked in, closing the door behind me. August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I walked in the near 90°F heat to Carla’s place. I was grateful that the humidity of the morning had dropped significantly; otherwise the heat would have been unbearable. By the time I walked up the steps to the apartment over the photography studio and knocked on her door, I had broken into a light sweat. February 16, 1997, Chicago, Illinois Our conversation during the Rap Session was about how to find ‘truth’ and both Elizabeth and I made a strong case for skepticism as the best approach to life. “But if you don’t believe anything is true, how can you decide what to do?” Brenna asked after a lengthy discussion about how to know what was true. “Remember what we said about listening carefully?” Elizabeth asked. “We operate as if the things we’ve come to believe actually are true, but always...
