I craned my neck back and forth. There was no sign of the four 14-year old freshmen girls anywhere. I exhaled a sigh of relief.
"Over here!" a girl yelled and waved. She sat at an outside table at the 19th hole, the golf course's bar and grill, with three other girls. Each girl had a tall nearly empty soda glass.
As I approached, I noticed that each girl was tanned and dressed ready. They were dressed ready for tennis.
"Hi, I'm Andy," I said raising my hand up in a casual Native American-type greeting. I placed my golf bag on the ground.
"We know who you are!" excitedly said the girl who called me over. She looked sort of familiar.
"What are your names?" My eyes stopped on one gal with light brown hair. She was Erin Smith, Eric's sister.
"I'm Tiffany," continued the girl with non-stop exuberance, "and this is Sara and Laura and Erin."
"I need to go to the bathroom," Laura Lambert said.
"I'll go with you," Erin said jumping up from her seat.
"You're Tiffany Towers," I blurted out in realization. She was Mayor Towers' daughter. Her father was the likely reason I was stuck doing this.
"Uh-huh. My daddy asked if I wanted to learn golf and I thought it might be fun."
"I see."
"Could you hold on just a second?" She became very squirmy. "I have to go to the bathroom now too." She looked at Sara. "Are you coming?"
"Don't say coming in front of a boy," Sara Shaw responded bashfully before standing.
I sat down dejectedly at the table. It was going to be a long day.
The foursome came back together fifteen minutes later. I know girls can't just whip it out and go like guys can, but it should never take that long to pee.
"Are we going to golf now?" asked Sara.
"Yep!" said Tiffany. "This way!"
I followed along. Apparently Tiffany knew what was going on. On the other side of the building was a deluxe six-seat golf cart with four brand new bags and corresponding clubs in the back.
"Is this yours?" I asked flabbergasted.
"Uh-huh," said Tiffany. "Daddy bought all this stuff for everybody. Sit up front with me."
The first tee was only fifty yards away but I placed my bag in the back of the cart and piled into the seats with the other girls. When we arrived eleven seconds later, the girls got out and walked around the tee box like disoriented ground squirrels while I went to my bag and retrieved a ball, a tee, and my driver.
"Is that the flag?" said Laura pointing. The first hole was a par four.
"I think so," said Tiffany.
"It's really far."
I looked at the girls. Tiffany's appearance was as close to a Hollywood starlet as Westville got. She had long, straight blonde hair, green eyes, and shapely curves. She was bustier than the other girls. Sara was a shoulder-length brunette with an average bustline. Laura was a long-legged and long-haired brunette. Erin had light brown hair part way down her back, the smallest breasts, and she was cute. I never paid attention to Erin when I was over at her house to visit Eric so I was surprised to discover she was cute.
"What do we do first?" asked Tiffany.
"First off," I said. "You need to dress differently next time."
"You don't like how we dress?" indignantly said Laura.
"You're dressed for tennis. This is golf."
"Ooooh! We get to go shopping!" happily said Tiffany. The proclamation stirred up the girls.
"Do you like my ball?" asked Laura holding her light pink ball up.
"Very nice," I said.
"I have all the colors. Which color should I use?"
"That one's fine."
"What about blue? I have blue balls."
"Don't say blue balls in front of a boy," chastised Sara.
"I don't mean thaaaaat!"
All the girls laughed. I sighed despondently. It already felt like I lost a week of my life.
"So the pink is okay?" asked Laura.
"The color doesn't matter," I informed Laura. I spoke to them all. "Get your balls and a club and we'll begin."
"Girls don't have balls," Laura quickly quipped.
"Laura!" shouted Sara but she was laughing as hard as the other girls.
"We don't," gasped Tiffany, trying to regain composure.
"I'll meet you at the tee," I said to end their revelry.
They headed to their bags on the cart.
"Hey, Andy!" Laura yelled. I turned. "Look Sara has blue balls too!" She held up two blue golf balls.
"Give me those!" said Sara angrily. She reached for them but Laura moved her hands.
"Sara's got blue balls! Sara's got blue balls!"
Sara grabbed Laura's wrists and then was able to rip the balls out of her friend's hands.
Tiffany and Erin were more organized. They simply got their ball and a club and came over.
"My ball is yellow," said Tiffany showing her bright yellow one. "What color are your balls?"
"Just white," I said showing it to her.
"White balls," said Erin. "Mine are white too." She showed me to make sure I believed her.
I nodded acknowledgement.
"Do you ever get blue balls?" asked Tiffany.
"I prefer the white ones."
"You know what I mean. There." Tiffany pointed at my crotch.
I took a deep breath before saying, "We're here to play golf."
"I was just curious."
"It's just a question," added Erin.
"We're going to be with each other a lot, so I thought we could be friends," said Tiffany.
"I want to be friends," I said.
"Friends are open with each other," said Erin. "They can talk to each other."
"Right," said Tiffany. "So do you get blue balls?"
"Yes, sometimes, okay?" I hoped that would shut her up.
Laura and Sara were still bickering when they came over, but at least we could finally start.
"I'm ready," Laura said holding up her putter. I then noticed that every girl chose her putter.
"Have any of you played golf before?" I asked. All the girls shook their heads. "Have you ever watched golf on TV?"
"Borrrrrring!" said Sara.
"To the max," added Laura.
I exploded. "Why the hell do you girls want to play golf?"
"I want to win a trophy," Tiffany said.
"Why don't you buy a fucking trophy?"
"Where's the fun of that?"
"And we don't appreciate your swearing," said Laura.
"Sorry, I..." I faltered on how to respond. I felt tired.
"I think golf looks like fun," said Laura. "That's why I'm here."
"You're a better golfer than my brother," said Erin, "and he says he's learned a lot from you. I want to learn but he won't teach me anything."
Sara said, "I just want to kick Laura's butt at golf."
"She just wants to play with blue balls," retorted Laura which started the laughter again.
"I think maybe we should start with what each club does," I said.
The girls sat on the grass near the cart in a semi-circle. Club-by-club I slowly introduced them to the driver, the irons, and the putter. It went very well except when I brought out a wood from my bag.
"That's a wood?" said Tiffany.
"It's his wood," said Laura.
"Don't say wood in front of a boy," commented Sara.
"It sure is looooong," cracked Tiffany.
When I pulled out a second wood, things started up again.
"A boy with two woods!" said Laura.
"That's incredible!" piled on Tiffany.
"He better have four woods," said Erin. "There are four of us."
"Oh, imagine!" said Tiffany dreamily.
Once I was through with all the clubs I said, "I think that's enough for today."
"That's it?" said Sara disappointedly.
"We didn't get to hit any balls!" whined Erin.
"Not even Sara's blue balls," ribbed Laura.
"Shut up!" Sara shot back.
"Tomorrow," I said. "You have to get to know your clubs first."
"Easy for you to say," said Laura. "Boys carry their club with them all the time."
