Amanda was sitting at her lab balance when all of a sudden, the whole lab shook. She heard her supervisor Mary ask ‘What was that?’ Amanda told Mary ‘Sounded like an explosion.’
Mary asked ‘So what do we do?’
Amanda thought for a moment. ‘Well, if anyone is hurt, they might appreciate having wet towels to clean their faces. Let’s prepare some wet white towels and put them in bags so they stay clean until used. We’ll put them into a bucket.’ As she was talking, Amanda was starting to do what she was saying and Mary followed suit. They had about 10 towels prepared when Carl burst into the lab ‘Mandy, The Kid is hurt. He’s asking for his mom but she’s away so I thought maybe you could come comfort him.’
Amanda looked at Carl ‘How hurt is he?’
‘He’s pinned down under a beam. He’s saying he doesn’t want to die alone. He’s scared. He’s so young, Mandy, he really needs someone and he looks up to you.’
Amanda nodded and grabbed the bucket with the towels and headed towards the door, stopping to put on her hard hat. She grabbed some gloves and just before she was to leave the lab, she went back and grabbed pen and notebook and added them to the bucket.
She went with Carl and followed him into the plant. Once at the scene, Amanda was simply speechless. Torn steel and debris were everywhere. As if reading her mind, Carl said ‘everything is isolated, there is no risk of anything else blowing.’ He then pointed to a large beam that was now broken and partially on the ground. Under it was half of The Kid.
The Kid was a nickname given to one of the field operators. He’d been so young, only 18, when he’d joined the company and their crew so they’d nicknamed him The Kid. He’d been somewhat cocky in the beginning and in the two years he’d been with them, this crew had trained him and shaped him into a very competent and good operator.
When Amanda got close, she saw that The Kid was stuck under the beam up to his waist. He had tears streaming down his cheeks and leaving trails in the heavy dust that was coating his face. Amanda got down and sat next to him and took one of the towels and wiped his face gently. ‘Hey Kid.’
‘Mandy. I’m scared.’
‘I know. It’s okay to be scared.’
The Kid responded and spoke quickly, almost uncontrollably. ‘Everyone else is telling me not to be scared, that they’ll get me out of here and I need to hang on but I don’t think they’re telling me the truth. I can’t feel anything below my waist, I feel like shit and it’s going to take them so long to get this beam off me and then when they do, I’m just going to die, Mandy… I’ve seen this on tv where they try to save a crush victim and they always die.’
‘Kid, slow down sweetie, slow down.’
‘Mandy, I don’t want to be told lies, I know I’m going to die. I just don’t want to die alone. Please say you’ll stay with me?’
‘I’m not going anywhere. I’ll stay with you and I won’t lie to you, I promise.’
Amanda continued gently washing his face and his hands. When she was done, she grabbed his hand and awkwardly laid down next to him, best she could. She softly ran her hand through his hair.
‘I’m scared Mandy. I’m never going to see my mom again.’
‘Where is your mom? I’m sure we can send someone to get her.’
‘She’s gone back to Ontario to visit her sister. They’re at a lake, in a cabin where there’s no phone, no cell signal, no nothing. She calls every few days from the store in the village. Last time we talked, I told her she worried about me too much. I’m scared that this is all she’ll be left with when I don’t make it and please don’t tell me that I’m going to make it ’cause I’m not stupid, I can feel it Mandy.’
‘Okay. I won’t make promises I can’t keep. How about we write a letter for your mom? I’ve got a pen and some paper here.’
‘Will you write it for me?’
Amanda reached for the notebook and the pen. ‘Sure. Go ahead.’
The Kid told Amanda what he wanted her to write for his mom. Around them, their co-workers along with the local firefighters, were trying to figure out a way to remove the beam from The Kid’s lower body.
When they were done, Amanda put the pen and notebook away and resumed soothingly playing in his hair.
‘Mandy?’
‘Yes?’
‘Thank you.’
‘For what?’
‘For being here. For not going on and on about hanging in there and all that crap.’
‘I’m glad I can be here for you.’
‘Can I have some water? I’m thirsty.’
The first responder who was close answered ‘You really shouldn’t drink anything ’cause you’re going to need surgery.’
Amanda reached for one of her other bags containing a wet towel. Looking up at the first responder, she said ‘a little moisture won’t hurt. His throat has to be parched.’ And she took the moist towel and put it on The Kid’s lips and squeezed a bit. A small amount of water came out of the towel and went into his mouth.
‘Thank you.’ The Kid said, closing his eyes.
Amanda put the towel away and put her hand back in his hair.
The first responder called out ‘Don’t go to sleep there young man, you need to hang in there, we’ll get you out. Come on buddy, stay with us here.’ And he gently shook The Kid’s shoulder.
Amanda glared at the guy and said ‘He’s just resting a bit. Give him a break.’
Amanda then softened her voice and after kissing The Kid on the forehead told him ‘If you want to take a little nap sweetie, go ahead and close your eyes. Just hang on to my hand and relax.’
The Kid closed his eyes a bit while Amanda continued to play in his hair with her free hand.
The Kid opened his eyes again and asked ‘Mandy, can I ask you one more thing?’
‘Sure sweetie, anything.’
‘Don’t let the paramedics do CPR on me. When I go, let me go.’
‘You sure?’
‘Yeah. Absolutely. I can feel it Mandy. I can feel the life draining out of me and I just don’t want to fight it anymore. You know how much I love skiing, I just couldn’t live without being able to ski. Promise?’
‘Okay. I promise.’
The Kid then said ‘I’m going to rest again for a bit.’
Amanda let him rest and continued to gently stroke his hair. His hair was soft despite all the dust in it. Doing that also soothed her.
After a few minutes, one of the firefighters came to her and said ‘Miss, we have to ask you to move over there for a few minutes while we cut something above here. It’s going to make some sparks so we’ll cover him here but you should go over there.’
Amanda said ‘I’m not going anywhere. Cover me with the same thing you cover him with.’
‘But miss, he won’t even know you’re gone. It’s only for a few minutes.’
‘I said I’m not going anywhere. I promised I’d stay with him and I will no matter what.’
The man walked away and gave orders for another blanket to be brought over.
The Kid opened his eyes and turned his head towards Amanda ‘Thank you.’ He said weakly.
‘I promised you and I will keep my promise. You okay? You want me to ask them for more meds or something?’
‘They didn’t give me any meds Mandy.’
‘What?’
‘It’s okay. Like I said earlier, I can’t feel anything below my waist so I really don’t need meds. I’m just tired and sleepy.’
Amanda kissed his forehead again and said ‘Okay. You rest as much as you want.’
The firefighters then came back with thick blankets and asked ‘you sure you want to stay under there? We wouldn’t want you to get scared under there and panic.’
Amanda turned to him ‘If it’s going to be scary for me, don’t you think it’s going to be scary for him? I’m not leaving him alone. He’s scared enough as it is.’
So they put the blankets over them and suddenly, it was almost dark. Amanda got closer to The Kid and said ‘I’m still here sweetie’.
The Kid smiled at her and then closed his eyes and sighed. ‘I’m not feeling too good anymor
e. I’m really getting tired.’
‘It’s okay.’
‘You’re not going to think I’m a loser for giving up, are you?
‘Never. I know you well enough to know that if you had hope, you’d fight.’
‘Good.’
Amanda kissed his forehead again and said ‘Close your eyes and rest. I’m here and I’m not going anywhere.’
Above them, the work was done so the blankets were removed.
The Kid opened his eyes and said ‘Mandy, I think it’s my time to go.’
Amanda had trouble holding back the tears. ‘What makes you say that?’
‘I see my grandpa is behind you. He’s been dead for ten years. He’s telling me that he’s here to help me transition.’
‘He’s your angel. Was he your mom’s dad?’
‘Yes.’ The Kid’s answer was barely audible.
‘I think your mom will feel better knowing that her dad was there for you when she couldn’t be.’
‘So you’re not going to tell me to fight and tell me to stay with you?’
‘Is that what you want?’
‘No. I’m ready. I told you I didn’t want any bull.’
‘No bull. If you’re ready, then I’ll just stay here with you and let you do what you need to do. I’m sure your mom would want you to know that she loved you. I’d come to really care for you too kiddo.’
‘Can you tell mom one more thing?’
‘Sure. What is it?’
‘Tell her it didn’t hurt.’ Amanda barely heard the last phrase and she once again kissed his forehead and stroked his hair. The Kid had closed his eyes and was barely breathing. Amanda felt his hand relax in hers and then, he simply stopped breathing. With tears running down her face, Amanda remained next to him for a few more moments making sure that he was really gone and then waited some more to ensure it would be too late for anyone to attempt resuscitation
One of the rescuers came to her and said ‘Miss, we’re ready to lift the beam off him. As soon as we do, we need to pull him out and put him on a gurney and work on him so we need you to be out of the way.’
Amanda turned to him and said ‘It’s too late. He’s gone. But we still need to pull him out.’
‘He’s gone? As in dead?’
Amanda nodded as she sat up, never letting go of The Kid’s hand.
‘He’s been gone for a while now. He knew he wasn’t going to make it and didn’t want CPR. That’s why I didn’t tell you sooner.’
The rescuer swore and walked away. When word got around, there was silence. Then, Carl said ‘Okay, let’s get him out.’ And that got people going again. Amanda moved away long enough for the team to pull up the beam, pull The Kid out and put him on a gurney. That’s when they saw the blood. The Kid had slowly bled out under the beam. Several people cursed, saying that if they’d worked faster, they could have saved him. Amanda knew otherwise. She went back to his side and took his hand in hers again.
Amanda stayed with him and refused to go anywhere until the coroner was done and he was ready to be moved to the medical examiner’s lab.
It was later revealed that The Kid had had massive internal injuries and would likely not have survived even if the rescue had been any faster.
The Kid’s mom was located and told about the accident. When she came back, she asked for Amanda to take her to the scene where it had happened and asked Amanda to read her the letter there. With tears streaming, Amanda did that and then added ‘Your son then said to tell you that it didn’t hurt.’ Both women cried and hugged for a long time. The Kid was cremated and his ashes taken back to Ontario where he’d been from and put next to his grandpa’s ashes.
Amanda returned to work and, after a few months, decided to volunteer at the hospital to help families deal with the last moments of loved ones dying. She found great peace in helping people that way.

Author’s note: I know we all like stories that end well and I’m sorry that this one didn’t but this was a nightmare I had and I needed to write it to be freed of it haunting me. The guy at work who I called The Kid in this story, he’s doing just fine. But now when I see him, I want to gently play in his hair and kiss his forehead. Nothing more.

They were doing the speed limit, but my anxiety was making me more than a little impatient. I turned on his blinker and made to pass the truck. That was when I noticed the bumper sticker affixed to the tailgate. It had been right there in front of me, almost as if I had purposely avoided reading the bright white letters set out against the purple background: Dayton HS Cheerleading. As I turned the words over, something clicked. I'm not sure where the thought had come from, but I realized I...

Unwanted Attention - Part 1: The Accident By MindlessPath I cranked up the volume of my MP3 player hoping it would allow me to ignore the voices coming from below. It did not help with the swaying though, so I still had a hard time falling asleep. I had now applied three times for a room change but the people responsible for handling the dorms kept ignoring my requests. Being a freshman in the university lowered my leverage, and the lack of influential parents probably had much...
THE ACCIDENT I was happy with my life. At thirty three I was head of a research unit for a huge international pharmacy conglomerate, I had a nice four bed roomed detached house with no mortgage, only a few miles away in a 'good' neighbourhood. My wife, not quite two years younger than me was beautiful, smart and looked after our two girls, Tracey twelve and Alice, six. I liked to think that I was firm but fair with the girls, it's not easy for a man to discipline young girls, but...
The Accident By Katie Dale I was a normal teenage boy. Healthy and happy. I was very smart ? always got good grades even without studying. I actually liked going to high-school. I did a lot of reading ? both fiction and non-fiction. I especially liked long novels. I was also into computers. I didn't have my own, but on the family computer I enjoyed a bit of programming, word-processing and web-surfing. I also played sports, although I wasn't so into them. But I was able to run...
For the next two days, Richard and Ellen stayed at home and took the time to play with their children. They took strolls in Munich’s ‘English Garden’, a public park. A few times they sat with the natives in one of the large beer gardens, in the shade of old chestnut trees, and enjoyed the light ale that was served. A few days later, Ellen met with Marie to tell her of their visit to Coburg. She found her cousin in bad spirits. On Ellen’s insistence, Marie told her the reason. Lucien was now...

My arm had a tube connected to a drip bag stuck into it and I had many monitors attached to my body. Next I saw my wife asleep in a chair next to my bed. I tried to say...
I looked forward to this summer. It was supposed to be the summer of my final internship rotation for graduation with a degree in psychology and start of my adult life as a licensed clinical practitioner. I was 26 and excited to call myself free to discover the real world. The bubble burst on my first morning driving to the clinic to begin my final rotation. The freeway was crowded, as it usually is this time of morning; I was easing off the road at my exit when out of no where an idiot driving...

Accident by Unknown When I was six years old, I had a bad accident in the playground. I fell off of a piece of climbing equipment for older children called "monkey bars" and struck my head. This resulted in my being hospitalized for a few days but fortunately left me with no permanent injury. However, after being released from the hospital, I began to suffer from two difficulties: occasional dizzy spells with loss of balance, and more serious to me, loss of control of wetting. ...
Sue did hear it and quickly sat up. Seeing my eyes open, she rushed over and kissed me. I cleared my throat and in a weak voice, I asked her what happened. She told me that another car had crossed into my lane and hit me head-on. I asked if anyone else was hurt. She said that the other driver and his passenger were killed. They were driving a smaller vehicle than I was. Then I asked her when it was and she said that I had been out for two days. She told me that I had seven broken...
Motorcycle Accident My sister Stormy is older that I am. She was nineteen years old and dating a guy with a motorcycle. I thought that he was a jerk and so did our parents. However she was in love with him. Then one Friday night we got a phone call to come down to the hospital…there had been an accident. Stormy had broken both of her forearms. The doctor said that it was a simple fracture but that he had to immobilize the joints on either end so she was in two casts from the palm her...
"The Accident" a short story by CJ. Wenhurst It was a typical faced-paced summer day in downtown New York. The weather was fairly humid in the late morning after an early morning rain and the roads were still a bit damp in the shade. The usual businessmen and woman were hurriedly pushing their way through the countless packs of others as they started the nine to five routine typical of the busy New York city. The sickening smell of diesel and coffee and the sound of a...

It was cold outside. The thermometer read 25 degrees. I was sitting in my car, warming it up at the apartment complex where I live, when suddenly, I heard a thud and felt my car rock. I knew instinctively, from having been in auto accidents, that someone had struck my car. I looked in the rear-view mirror and saw another car, one that had backed into me.My first thought was not a good one. What type of idiot would back into another car? That thought was quickly vanquished when I and the other...

The Auto Accident by Bobbie Ross I enjoyed my evening. I seldom go out dressed because of my college classes and my odd work schedule. When I do go out dressed I make sure I am at some place that I am not likely to be spotted by anyone I know. That is why I was at a bar in not only another city, but another state as well. The bar was just across the border about 40 minutes away. Unfortunately the drinking age was 21 and I was only 20. In a few months I would be 21....
The Accident Janet L. Stickney [email protected] Those guys were chasing me after half beating me to a pulp while trying to steal my money, what little I had, my legs moving as fast as they could. I turned the corner, only to find myself faced with a tall fence. There was no place to go, so I took a running start, leapt into the air, my body hitting the fence in a straddle, almost clearing it. The sudden sharp pain in my groin was followed by an enduring agony that shot through...

Jordan woke up to the bells and buzzers, bright lights, and frantic voices of the emergency room. The fog started to lift from his head and the voices became clear as he realized it was him they were so frantic about. Looking down at his legs he saw the blood, too much blood. He had never seen so much in one place. Try as he might he couldn’t seem to move and then suddenly, as the clarity engulfed him, pain-filled his soul and he screamed. The body standing next to him grabbed his arm, a sharp...
MedicalWarren opened his eyes and looked around. "Where am I?" he asked. "In an ambulance," a man in a uniform next to him told him. "What happened?" "You were in a car accident." "Jesus. I don't remember a thing." "You knocked yourself out, but we think you're going to be OK." "What about my friend, Jessie? The girl in the car with me?" "I don't know, pal. The next thing to hit me was big, literally, it was about a week after the argument. I started off for Bradford on that Friday morning in a good mood. I had just landed a contract locally to redesign a production line which would give me 2 years work... I was driving along the A629 towards Keighley when the accident happened. An impatient moron coming towards me pulled out to overtake the queue he was stuck behind. It was so sudden that I didn't even have time to react and we met in a...
Author’s Note: This started out with a grand design. My plans went awry quickly. Hopefully, my meandering doesn’t offend. Many thanks to Tim413413 for making it readable. * Freedom. It was the only word that described the feeling. I stood outside the double doors of the courthouse and smiled up at the sky. It was a dreary gray, but for me, it felt like a bright blue. I breathed deeply, symbolically sucking in the court-ordered end of my private nightmare. My life was mine again. It would no...
This is a story from my teens. Many coincidences led to a very special experience with Him, my father. None of us would have seen it coming and would never believe it would happen, but it did. If he hadn't been in that bicycle accident I would never have had to care for him as I did for a brief period of time. With bandaged hands, stiches and some titanium in his under arm he was more or less helpless and totally dependent of my care. The doctor had estimated 2 weeks until the stitches could be...
AccidentMy wife and I owned a nice single story home in the subs. We had moved into this older well kept neighborhood a year earlier and got along with every person who lived around us. There were block parties that we attended and got to know everyone pretty well.I am pretty handy and work on the house a lot. One day the neighbor to our left came over and asked if I could help her with cleaning the gutters. She was a nice lady in her fifties, divorced, no k**s, and very friendly. She had...

By Dunchad© I was riding my motorcycle home from work when it happened. For some unknown reason, the second car in front of me decided to hit their brakes instead of driving through the yellow light. I was sixteen years old and running away from home. My parents pissed me off so I left. I was somewhere in Pennsylvania at the time, out in the boondocks, and at this rinky-dink ‘Gas Station.’ It wasn’t even a ‘Convenience Store’ like we have back home. All they sold was gasoline, motor oil, and some road maps. Oh yes and they had a bathroom but you had to get the key from the attendant. The key was chained to a hubcap off an old Lincoln Continental. Yeah I got the complete story while I...
This is not so much a story as a series of memories. My recollections were prompted by a lady on xHamster who expresses an interest in this kind of fun. So I dedicate the following to her. Happy water sports J xx If you don’t like the subject matter then you can just P**S OFF ;)My first wife and I had a fairly mundane sex life until we had out “Happy accident”. We were making love in a fairly conventional way. missionary position. When due to an over full bladder I wet myself...well not just...
I never saw it. Ordinarily, I never miss an object that big. School was out this Friday so I was among the throng of students headed toward our cars. I had a brown Toyota that probably claimed on the original brochure to be gold in color. I generally was only concerned with the cars and trucks backing out on the same side of the lane I walked. I trusted the drivers on the other side to turn into the lane and not be a danger. A soft bump was still enough to knock me to the ground...
One of life's great mysteries, I thought, as I sat waiting for the light to change. Why was the light here? I stopped for it an average of ten times a week and at various times of the day and night and ninety percent of the time there was never another vehicle in sight. Whatever traffic I saw the other ten- percent wasn't enough to justify a four way stop sign. So why was the light here when an inexpensive stop sign could have done the job? The sudden shock of the hit drove all thoughts of...
About a month after Warren's accident, he got a call from Curtis Ingalls. "How's the knee?" Curtis asked. "Getting there. I'm rehabbing, but it's going to take some time." "Nationals, you think?" "I doubt it," Warren said. "Nationals are two months away, and I'm nowhere near ready to go anywhere near the ice yet. If we think we can get it together for Worlds, we'll petition for a bye." "Which you'll probably get, considering who we're going to have to send to Worlds if...
Trisha felt like such an idiot as they were wheeling her back to the exam room from x-ray. She knew that the parking lot was going to be slippery after last night's rain and this morning's low temperature. If she had only gone the two seconds slower she was always talking to her sons about. Now, she would be laid up for the weekend. The only saving grace, she thought, was that her boys would be at their dad's so she could laze around and recuperate. The boys at their dad's — Trisha had...

As long as you remember, NO BOYS.” “Yes mom,” Leila said as she shrugged off her mother’s hug. “It’ll just be me, Patricia O’Reilly, Christina Gomez, Michelle Sumner and...

Nobody really knew what to expect ahead of a kick-off aquisition meeting like this but, from Stella’s point of view, it had not gone well. Ero-Tech’s technologies were certainly interesting, but they had...
I had just found out that the hot girl I fucked over Spring Break was in fact my cousin. Now sitting at my Aunt's house trying to listen to conversations and answer questions was really trying. After about an hour, my Aunt emerged from the kitchen and asked Cara if she would run to the store since her car was easiest to get out. Cara agreed and went to get her shoes and keys. When she returned, she looked over at the group and asked “Anybody want go with me?” I noticed that my mom was...
When Chelsea was nine, her mother died of cancer, and I was left to raise her alone. This was not a problem, because Chelsea was smart, active, cute and all around, a “good” little girl. She was growing to be the spitting image of her mother, with bright red hair, brilliant blue eyes and a smile that would light up the room. When Chelsea was younger, up until about the age of six, I would bath her, periodically, but she was just a cute child, and not the object of any sexual attraction to...

I didn’t think anyone would be alive when you came to our rescue.” “Well, we were lucky that someone saw what happened and called us immediately. We are always ready for any type of emergency.” “Now, we...

I can feel the sheet covering me but I can’t move. Then I hear a mature man’s voice calling to someone; “Nurse! Will you send those two candy stripers over here,...

My husband had to go out of town for work in a town near Las Vegas, Nevada. His duties kept him out there for a little over two weeks. About 4 days longer than he had planned. My boss briefly shows me around the floor I'm going to be working on and introduces me to a few of the other employees I'd be working with before he suddenly gets a call and the day quickly begins. Before I could settle in, or even locate the restrooms, the phones started to ring off the hook....
There's a niche for everyone...By Big Daddy BreederI knew my Alpha Bottom was pregnant. I knew that. But what I wasn’t counting on was how one walk would change everything.“He’s nine months today!” said the MPreg Doctor. “Labour could be triggered by a sneeze. The baby is big but very healthy. I want to be there to help bring your bundle of joy into the world.”My Alpha Bottom looked at me lovingly saying, “Any day now we could be parents. I’m so excited.” The truth of the matter; I had more...

I slammed the brakes on hard. Really hard. The car skidded a bit, the anti-lock brakes kicked in and I watched in horror. My car stopped about three feet from the side door of the car in front of me. I gazed out of the front of the windscreen and stared at the blue car in front of me that had swerved to avoid the collision. I Looked to my right and then I remembered that there were white lines on the road that I had crossed. I should have stopped, it was all my fault. I had been driving along a...
