June 29, 1996, Chicago, Illinois

“Hi!” Karla exclaimed when she walked out of the doors which led from Passport Control and Customs into the arrivals hall of the International Terminal at O’Hare.

“Hi!” I replied. “Karla Timmer, this is my wife, Doctor Kara Adams.”

“The hospital doctor?”

“No,” Kara said with a friendly smile, “the chemistry doctor.”

“Sorry!” Karla replied quietly, turning slightly red.

“It’s OK, Karla,” Kara said gently. “Steve’s situation is more than a little complicated!”

Karla happily surrendered her largest bag to me, and I carried it as the three of us walked out to the car. She was quiet for most of the drive to the house, speaking only when spoken to. I felt she was very nervous, given Kara’s presence, and I realized she was going to be very nervous the entire week.

It struck me that inviting her to visit might not have been the best idea I’d had. But, it didn’t matter because she was here, and that meant I’d need to find a way to deal with the issue. My first thought was having Kara spend some time with her, but I wasn’t sure that was going to help. I decided that the best course of action was probably for me to talk to her privately, something I should have done before she booked her trip.

When we arrived at the house, Kara and I exchanged a look, which she understood, and then I led Karla upstairs to the spare room she’d be using.

“Karla, nobody here is upset with you or thinks you did anything wrong.”

“I just feel strange being in your house with your wife; well, with your wives. And your kids.”

“I think you’ll find that they’re very welcoming. All of them.”

“But you and I...”

“Yes.”

“But they’ll know!”

I couldn’t help but laugh softly, “My wives know we were together in Amsterdam. And they didn’t have an issue with you coming to visit. You saw how Kara greeted you. And she’s offered to show you Chicago and hang out with you while I’m working.”

“And you want to...” she asked, staring down at the floor, blushing slightly.

“If you do, yes. But remember, you never have to do it with anyone. And I promise it’s OK. You could ask Kara, if you wanted to be sure.”

“I’d be too embarrassed to ask! Could you sleep in here? With me?”

“That you WOULD have to ask Kara and Jessica about,” I said. “But I believe they’ll agree, at least for one or two nights. Why don’t you unpack, have a shower, and then come join us? Unless you need a nap?”

“I think I’ll be fine. I slept some on the plane, but a shower would be nice.”

“Just come downstairs when you’re ready. We’ll be in the great room or the sunroom. Dinner will be at 7:00pm so Jessica can join us. She’s working at the hospital.”

“OK.”

We exchanged a brief hug and I went downstairs to find Kara who was in the sunroom with the kids. I took her aside for a moment, earning a glare from Birgit who still hadn’t had her cuddles for the day.

“You’re on thin ice with your eldest daughter,” Kara said with a quiet laugh.

“She can wait two more minutes,” I chuckled.

“Karla seemed VERY nervous.”

“I know. I don’t think she really thought about the situation before she saw you with me at the airport. She’s smart, but she’s not a deep thinker, if that makes sense. She knows a lot about art, and I think I told you she starts on her Master’s degree in September.”

“You did. Do you think she’s going to be OK hanging out with me and Jess?”

“I think so. She’s going to work up her courage to ask you if I can spend the night with her at least one or two nights when she’s here.”

“I’ll get her comfortable; don’t worry about it. I take it she’s joining us for our family dinner tomorrow?”

“That’s the plan. I already made plans with Maria Cristina to have lunch downtown and spend a few hours shopping for clothes for school. I just felt it was better to not create any potential conflicts, if you get my drift.”

“I think that makes sense, as I said when you first raised the issue. You took Friday off, right?”

“Yes. It made sense given that Fourth of July is Thursday and Saturday is going to be super-busy with Samantha’s wedding. Karla’s flight to New York leaves early enough for us to take her to the airport before we head to Chicago Botanic Gardens.”

“She’s going to the museums?”

“Yes. Here, obviously, but in New York at least the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum, and Whitney Museum of American Art. One of her friends at the Van Gogh Museum made arrangements for her to meet a female design student from The New School who’ll act as her tour guide. She’ll be in New York until Thursday, then fly back to Amsterdam.”

“What about here? Which museums are you taking her to?”

“On Friday we’ll go to the Art Institute and the Museum of Contemporary Art. Siobhán is going to join us. We’ll actually see her on Monday evening at her studio.”

“Are you skipping karate?”

“Only on Monday. Karla wanted to see the dojo, so she’ll join us on Tuesday evening.”

“Are you spending enough time with her?”

“Yes. She and I talked about it, and she knew my availability. But she had to come either this week, before her thing in New York, or after, and after didn’t work because of our Florida trip.”

“OK. And now, before the daggers do fatal damage, I believe your daughter needs her cuddles!”

I chuckled, “I notice it’s ‘your’ daughter when she’s in a mood, but ‘our’ daughter when she’s not!”

Kara laughed softly, “I believe I’ve heard you say it that way when the boys are acting goofy!”

“Especially to Jen,” I grinned. “The lesbian and her wife deserve every bit of ‘boy’ they have to endure!”

“You love it, too!”

“Of course! But as Jennifer said, it’s not really that much different from being my friend in High School! Same little boys. Same silly behavior!”

Kara laughed, “That’s not how I remember you in High School!”

I kissed her then walked over and scooped up my annoyed daughter and went to one of the chaise lounge chairs to cuddle.

“Where’s Karla?” Birgit asked.

“She was unpacking and taking a shower. She’ll be down soon for you to meet her. And remember what we talked about?”

“No teasing about sex!”

“Exactly. Are you ready for the trip to Florida?”

“Yes! I’m happy Aunt Bethany and Aunt Kathy and their families are coming. I wish Tiffany and Rachel could come with us!”

“When you get older you could go to Florida with just your friends, if you wanted to.”

“Tiffany’s mom would never let her go! She’s dumb! She never lets Tiffany do fun stuff. Rachel’s mom is really nice and lets her do stuff.”

Which about summed up what I knew about Julie, Tiffany’s mom, and how I saw Carla handle Rachel. In effect, anything I approved of, Rachel could do. Carla didn’t spend a lot of time around us, but she was cordial and friendly to all of us, and gave Rachel the same freedom Birgit had. Julie, on the other hand, was almost as bad as Carol. And with Francesca and Jesse both ten, Carol was getting more nervous by the day.

“Just remember you need to follow Tiffany’s mom’s rules for her, Pumpkin.”

“I know,” she groused. “Just like Jesse and Francesca. He should pick Amber! Aunt Penny is cool! So is Aunt Kathy!”

“I think so!”

Birgit laughed, “Because they were your girlfriends before you married my moms!”

“Perhaps,” I chuckled.

“How come you picked my moms?” Birgit asked.

“They both picked me!”

“Girls rule!” Birgit declared firmly.

“So it would appear!” I agreed.

I saw Karla come to the door of the sunroom and gently disentangled myself from a daughter who did NOT want to stop cuddling, and got up. I introduced Karla to the kids who were there - Birgit, Ashley, Stephie, and Albert, and let her know Jesse was at hockey practice and that Matthew and Michael were out with Elyse and Eduardo.

“I was going to make some tea,” Kara said. “Karla, why don’t you come with me to the kitchen. I can show you the rest of the house as well.”

They left and despite the look I got from Birgit, I picked up Ashley and held her for a bit.

“How are you, Cinderella?”

“I want to see the castle at Disneyland!”

It was Disney World, but I wasn’t going to argue with her.

“My princess wants to live in a castle?” I asked.

“Yes!”

“Dad?” Albert asked.

“Yes?”

“Can we go on the pirate ride?”

“Absolutely! It’s one of the highlights of the park! I really liked the Haunted Mansion, Country Bear Jamboree, and the Jungle Cruise when I was there twenty-two years ago.”

“So when the dinosaurs were around?” he teased.

“I’m not quite THAT old, you little turkey! On the other hand, your mom is older than I am, so maybe SHE saw dinosaurs! You can ask her!”

Which would lead to Jessica being completely outraged and to me having a nice laugh.

“Dad?” Stephie asked.

“Yes?”

“Can I ride to Florida with Nicholas?”

“I think we can arrange that. Aunt Bethany and Uncle Tom could take you in their van, and Bobby could ride with Aunt Kathy and Uncle Kurt so he could be with Keith.”

“I’m riding with Dad!” Birgit declared.

“No kidding!” Kara said from the door to the sunroom.

She and Karla came in with a pot of tea and poured some for me. Birgit went to get juice boxes for herself and her siblings.

“I’m just glad the Quinns decided on a minivan,” I said. “That way, between the three of us we can handle twelve kids and nine adults!”

“Aunt Jennifer and Aunt Josie aren’t going?” Birgit asked.

“No,” I replied. “They are going to Vermont to see Katy and Amy, and their friends Larry and Drew are meeting them there.”

“I think I’d need a vacation if I was Jesse’s mom,” Kara laughed.

“He is a force to be reckoned with,” I chuckled. “As is our eldest daughter!”

“Yes, but you’re the one who has to deal with her most of the time!”

“True.”

“I’m good!” Birgit protested.

“Yes, you are,” I agreed. “And VERY demanding!”

“If boys just did what I said it wouldn’t be a problem!”

“Isn’t THAT the truth?” Kara laughed.

“Your children are very forward!” Karla said. “They speak like adults!”

“Because we treat them like adults,” I said. “And three of them are missing, as we said before. You’ll see the whole gang at dinner tomorrow night, along with some of our friends.”

We hung out with the kids until it was time to start making dinner, and I asked Karla to join me in the kitchen. Kara and I had agreed with Jessica that Kara would walk alone to pick her up so I could make sure dinner was ready on time.

“I don’t know how to cook very well,” Karla said. “I eat lots of noodles and sandwiches.”

“So pretty much like most college students. I learned to cook when I was much younger, and I really enjoy it. When I was in college, Elyse, who you haven’t met yet, and I shared an apartment not far from here. I did all the cooking and my friends were always happy to join us for meals!”

“What are you making today?”

“Cajun blackened chicken, broccoli, and Cajun rice. We’ll also make a salad, and we have ice cream for dessert.”

“You can’t eat rice, though, can you?”

“A small portion. The problem in Amsterdam was eating too many «frieten»! Though I do have to say, on the rare occasions I have French fries, I like to drown them in mayonnaise sauce!”

“How can I help?”

“Can you safely use a knife without cutting off your fingers?” I asked with a grin.

“Yes, of course!”

“Then you can start on the salad while I prepare the chicken and the rice. Once you make the salad, you can cut up the broccoli so we can steam it.”

Karla did a good job and only needed a bit of guidance, mostly around how I wanted the various ingredients sliced or chopped, and by the time Jessica arrived home, everything was close to being ready. I introduced Karla and Jessica, and then Jessica went upstairs to shower and change. Fifteen minutes later, everyone was at the table.

“This is very good!” Karla declared when she’d sampled everything. “And very spicy!”

“I’m glad you like it,” I replied.

When we finished dessert, everyone pitched in, and then we spent the evening playing games with the kids. After we put them all to bed, Kara suggested a sauna. It took a little coaxing from both Kara and Jessica, but Karla agreed and ten minutes later, the four of us were sitting naked in the sauna.

“You do this all the time?” Karla asked.

“Very often, yes,” Jessica replied. “Though tomorrow night when the whole family is here, the kids wear bathing suits and the adults wrap themselves in towels. Steve’s sister and her husband are here, along with some friends who are uncomfortable about kids being naked with adults.”

“I can see how being naked with your sister or brother would be very weird,” Karla said.

Stephanie and I were at a point where we could easily have done it without any issues, but neither Jessica nor Ed were comfortable with the idea, for very good reasons, so we didn’t. It kept the peace, and it wasn’t really a sacrifice, especially given how Brian, Bo, and Gina felt about kids being naked with the adults.

That said, Bo and Gina were only joining us about every third week for dinner, and once they married, the same would probably be true for Samantha and Brian. I wasn’t happy with either of those developments, but they really weren’t surprising. Bo and Gina had their child, and another on the way, and wanted to start their own family traditions. Samantha and Brian had friends outside our circle, and though Samantha and I would always be close, they, too, would start their own family in the not too distant future.

“Not everyone is comfortable with how free we are,” Kara said. “How is it in the Netherlands?”

“In the big cities, it’s probably not too different from how you are, though Dutch people are a bit more reserved. In the countryside, it’s very, very conservative. Most people judge by Amsterdam, and that’s not how it is most places in the Netherlands.”

“It would be like judging the US by San Francisco or New York City,” I said. “Or assuming people in rural areas think the same way people in urban areas do. Like the Netherlands, our areas outside the largest cities tend to be conservative. Our biggest conflicts in the future are likely to come from people in large cities passing laws to regulate things people in the rural areas have done forever, which the city folk simply don’t understand.”

“I hear New York is fun,” Karla said. “But I also heard it’s dangerous.”

“It’s much better than it used to be,” I said. “They’ve really cleaned up the city and it shows. Your friend will know which areas to avoid, but pretty much anywhere in Manhattan is safe.”

“You’ve been to New York?”

“Yes, to see friends who live there. It’s been a few years, but we had no trouble at all anywhere in Midtown or Downtown, which is where everything you’re going to be seeing is, I believe.”

“I think so, yes. The girl I’m meeting, Eleanor, will meet me at the airport. I’m staying with her in her dorm room. Her roommate is away for the Summer, studying in Paris.”

“I had a friend who studied at Juilliard. She’s playing for the New York Symphony now. Her husband works on Wall Street. Actually, you talked to her father from Amsterdam - Doctor Barton. You’ll get a chance to meet him this week. He’s Jessica’s mentor and her boss.”

“He seemed like a good doctor and he seemed like he cared a lot for you.”

“He does,” I said. “I married his star pupil!”

“Karla,” Kara said, “Jessica and I are going to go out. Stay with Steve, and keep him all night if you want.”

“But... !”

“It’s OK,” Jessica said with a smile.

Kara and Jessica both kissed me, then left the sauna. I turned on the tap for the tub and when it was full, adjusted the sauna controls and invited Karla into the tub with me. Once she was sitting between my legs, I turned on the water jets, then put my arms around her.

“This is nice,” she sighed.

“Just relax,” I soothed. “They really meant what they said.”

“It’s very strange.”

“I know. But I was married to them when we were together in Amsterdam.”

“And we can do all the same things?”

“Yes.”

“Wonderful,” she sighed, snuggling back.

June 30, 1996, Chicago, Illinois

“I have a date with my daughter,” I said to Karla early on Sunday morning.

“You warned me!” she said with a contented sigh.

“We can shower first,” I said. “In fact, we probably should.”

“Because you have me all over your face?” she asked with a soft laugh.

“Yes. And probably me, too, because you don’t swallow before you kiss me!”

“That’s what I did the first time. You didn’t correct me, so I thought that was the right way to do it!”

I chuckled, “You might surprise another guy who way. And he might be really upset.”

“Why?”

A WellLived Life 2 Book 6 SamanthaChapter 2 A ColdHearted Bastard

June 19, 1992, Iron Mountain, Michigan “I’ll go to the grocery store,” I said after we unpacked. “I’ll come along,” Kara offered. “If it’s OK with Jessica and Elyse.” “Go!” Jessica said. “I just had some time with him on the drive up.” “Sure,” Elyse said. “We’ll get the kids outside to play. They’ve been cooped up in the cars all morning.” I kissed and hugged both Jessica and Elyse, and Kara and I got into my BMW for the drive to the small grocery store. “How are you?” Kara asked as we...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 5 Housemates

August 1981, Chicago, Illinois On Sunday morning, I made my usual call to Karin. I described everything in the apartment and all the things I’d done during the week, including the reception. Both of us would start school in a week and we were both looking forward to it. When we finished talking, I went out for my run, showered, and ate breakfast. I made some tea, started a load of laundry, and then turned on the stereo. I put on an REO Speedwagon album and then relaxed on the couch with the...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 63 Back to Work

August 21, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Unbelievable,” I said when I read the headline from the Chicago Tribune. “It says here that Solidarity activist Tadeusz Mazowiecki was nominated to be Prime Minister of Poland.” I hadn’t had a chance to read the paper on Sunday because it hadn’t been delivered before we left for the race track in Michigan. “So now what?” Kara asked. “We’re in totally uncharted territory. Your guess is as good as anyone’s right about now.” “Steve, do you have a minute?”...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 60 From the Heart

May 1982, Milford, Ohio On Saturday morning after Stephanie and I swam and ate breakfast, we picked up Bethany and Ed and did our shopping for the party. We went to K-Mart on Route 28 to get some decorations, as well as paper cups and plates and plastic silverware. Next we went to Fazio’s and bought all the groceries that we’d need. Finally, we stopped at UDF and picked up two gallons of ice cream. We headed back to my parents’ house and after we unloaded the car; I went to get Kara while...

Hearts BloomingChapter 4 Aid for Heartaches

Since I had planned to spend the four day weekend with my family and Jennifer, I had insisted on doing most of my sluts due those days on that Wednesday. I had been warning them all that I wasn’t going to be doing these weekly fucks one on one much longer and had had threesomes with most of them at least once. I had not yet done anything more than use my magic touch on any of them, but I decided I would take it to the next level that evening. As I drove to my home, I completely forgot about...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 36 My Lifes Journey

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I woke up early on the First of July, because my body clock was still set to Swedish time. The flight back had been long but uneventful, and I was happy that the businessman in the seat next to me hadn’t wanted to talk. I read, wrote some longhand journal entries, ate, and generally relaxed while the plane zipped over the Atlantic. I’d come home, taken a sauna, eaten a light meal, and gone straight to bed, not bothering to check messages, look at the mail that...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 4 Calm Before the Storm

June 1977 When I got home, I grabbed a Coke and some chips and went right to my room. I didn’t think I could deal with my parents or Jeff or Stephanie. I just needed to be by myself. That wouldn’t seem odd to anyone, because I often went to my room to read. In addition, I now had the TV I’d received for my birthday. I flipped it on to WXIX Channel 19 and reruns of Gilligan’s Island and Green Acres played in the background while I read. I had to get my mind clear for the final exams that...

July, 1982, Milford, Ohio I woke up early on Friday morning to make breakfast for Kara and her mom before she went to work. Mrs. Blanchard was surprised, but very pleased. After her mom left for work, Kara gave me a fierce kiss. “Thanks for staying in and cooking breakfast for us,” Kara said. “I hope that doesn’t cause you trouble with Stephanie, with you breaking your normal routine.” “Don’t worry about it,” I said, kissing her back. “We got in a bit later than I expected, and she’ll...

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois After Rosie left, I stripped the sheets from my bed, as well as the cover of the duvet, and tossed everything into the washing machine. I lit a lavender candle in the room, and then swept and dusted. I did a quick spot-check of the rest of the house and noticed that the tub in the sauna needed to be cleaned. I scrubbed it, then mopped the sauna floor with a damp sponge mop. I finished cleaning the sauna about the time the washing machine finished, so I moved...

August, 1984, Chicago, Illinois The rest of the week proceeded as expected - class on Wednesday, as well as the usual visit from Penny, work on Thursday, and class on Friday. Kara and I had lunch together at IIT, Sofia practiced her driving and parking, and I hung out with Mark Agnini after class for beers. Staci and I got into a couple of interesting debates about the Old Testament that Mark had to break up to allow others in the class to participate. She was very much of the ‘directly...

March 25, 2000, Chicago, Illinois “What time do I need to have you home?” “8:00pm will be fine,” Misty replied. “My parents are in Normal visiting my brother at Illinois State. They aren’t supposed to be home before 10:00pm.” Misty and I were in my car on the way to the NIKA apartment which, fortunately, was not being used. With our expansion, it was in more or less regular use, and that meant I didn’t have access to it as often as I would have liked. I was glad there had been a delay in...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 7 Setting the Course of My Life

June 1977 Friday ended up being a non-event. The more I thought about it, the more I was sure that there was no way on this earth I could say what happened between Birgit and me was a sin. Calling it a sin would debase it into a meaningless act. I could never do that. And the more I thought about Jennie McGrath, the more sure I was that I couldn’t call what she did for me a sin, either. If the church was right, I was going to hell. And frankly, there was no way that could be true. So I...

“So, how should we do these Stone’s songs?” Phil asked at our rehearsal session. “I think we all know the music, we just need to come up with a pretty awesome arrangement; we don’t want to sound like yet another cheap cover band.” “I had some ideas, if it’s okay for me to make some suggestions,” Allison said. “Of course it is,” Phil said. “Everyone can have a say, there’s no rule that says you can’t participate in the discussion.” “Thanks, Phil, I guess being the newest here, I’m a bit...

January, 1982, Washington, DC The flight to DC was uneventful and landed on time at Dulles Airport. A WellLived Life Book 7 Kara IIChapter 34 Old Routines and New Ideas

September 1982, Chicago, Illinois The weekend was quiet and besides homework, I worked on the program changes for Frank, called Karin, Tatyana, and Kara, and hung out with my usual study group. Monday was refreshingly normal. On Tuesday morning, I handed Katy my completed intake form. She put it in an envelope and stuck it in her bag. She said she’d let me know soon about the interview. On Tuesday afternoon, after having lunch with Stephie, I made my rounds and then I headed over to Sigma...

A WellLived Life Book 7 Kara IIChapter 35 An Interview and Some New Friends

October 1982, Chicago, Illinois The drive back to Chicago was as uneventful as usual, and I arrived at the apartment just before 6:00pm. When I arrived, Elyse and Stephie were sitting on the couch and Jackie was sitting on the loveseat. Stephie hopped up as I opened the door and greeted me with a hug and a kiss. “Hi, Peaches!” I said. “Glad you’re home, Yankee!” “Hi, Steve,” Elyse and Jackie both said. “Hey,” I replied. “How was the weekend?” “Well, it was just Kurt with me, Stephie,...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 52 Lifestyle Choices

June 11, 1989, Chicago, Illinois It was just after 3:00am when I kissed Trish goodbye. She’d been an enthusiastic, energetic, and adventurous lover. We’d done just about anything either of us could think of, though her breasts weren’t large enough for a tit-fuck. The last time had been in the shower where we’d ostensibly gone to clean up afterwards, but instead I ended up taking her from behind as she leaned against the wall of the shower. “I think I’ll have you again, Steve Adams,” she...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 38 Freshman Year Ends

May 1978 The first couple of weeks in May were busy with school, work, and friends. Except for Becky, I didn’t even have any dates. But I was OK with that. Well, almost OK. I wanted to see Anna, but it likely wasn’t going to happen until school was out. I had tutoring sessions with Melanie, but she still wouldn’t talk to me about anything other than Spanish. Barely a hello. I was grateful for the tutoring, but it was maddening seeing my friend this way. I hoped someday she could understand...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 44 Spring Break 1982 Part I

March, 1982, Milford, Ohio As I drove along I-65, I thought about what Stephanie had asked for and what Bethany had said without even knowing about the request. Of course, because Bethany and I were so in tune, she might have actually had an idea that I was struggling with getting involved with my sister again. I kept turning it over and over in my mind and I kept coming to the same conclusion — that I shouldn’t do it. I was torn between doing what Stephanie wanted and doing what Kara and...

September 7, 1992, Chicago, Illinois “That went reasonably well,” Michelle said when her parents drove off. “There were a few times I thought my expression would give away something I shouldn’t. You were messing with me, weren’t you?” She grabbed both my hands and smiled, “I was telling the truth, in my own way. Thank you!” She leaned forward and kissed my cheek. “So, what’s left?” I asked. “To visit UofC tomorrow and formally withdraw from classes. To spend some time with you and your...

October 1981, Chicago, Illinois I arrived back at the apartment just before 10:00pm and saw the address for the party. I decided I wasn’t particularly interested in going so I put on some music, poured myself a glass of wine, and started reading more about Russia. I was alternating between the history and culture book and the Communist Party book, decided on the history and culture book for this time. I didn’t get much reading done because I was thinking about Tatyana, which led me to...

January 23, 1996, Chicago, Illinois “Father, bless!” I said, greeting Father Basil with upturned palms. “Bless you, Stephen,” he said as I kissed his hand. The waiter showed us to a quiet table along the wall of Roditys in Greektown. He took our drink orders and was back quickly. We placed our food orders right away and he left to put them in with the kitchen. “I’m not quite sure how to address this, so I’m just going to ask you bluntly. Are you the father of Michelle’s baby?” I shook my...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 8 NIKAChapter 68 The Rules

June 29, 1995, Chicago, Illinois On Thursday, I finally had lunch with Melissa again, something I hadn’t been looking forward to. Much like with Cèlia, Melissa and I had passed an inflection point and I was left with sub-optimal paths forward. I’d been struggling with the possible solutions, and all of them had pitfalls. When I walked into Takumi, I had something of a plan. Whether it was good or not would only be known once everything played out. “I spoke to my wives,” I said after we’d...

December 5, 2000, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota “I had a good time last night,” I said. “I was surprised you invited a friend!” Mary laughed as we walked into the exam room, “Naomi had a good time as well. You know what a Resident’s life is like.” I nodded, “No social life.” “Exactly. You guys seemed to hit it off pretty well.” “Yes, but I’m not here for that!” “You’re everywhere for that, and you know it!” I couldn’t help but laugh. “Let’s just say that you hit the sweet spot -...

A WellLived Life Book 3 PiaChapter 25 The Puzzle and the Cat Part II

March 1980, Hovås/Göteborg, Sweden I woke early as usual, but just enjoyed being in bed with Katt. When she woke, she hopped out of bed and pulled a robe out of her closet and handed it to me. “There’s a spare toothbrush in the bathroom. Go have your shower, then we’ll have breakfast after I have my shower.” I quickly showered and brushed my teeth, and went back to Katt’s room. She went to shower and came back a few minutes later. She dressed, and I got a very good look at her sexy body...

We’ll have some family time this afternoon. I don’t have any plans.” “Good!” I hugged her and the rest of the kids, then went to find Kara. I spent most of my time acting as a manservant to Sensei Robert and Sensei Hiro.” “He who will lead, must first serve,” I said. “Someday, I’m going to send you to Sensei Hiro, should he live long enough. August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I walked in the near 90°F heat to Carla’s place. I was grateful that the humidity of the morning had dropped significantly; otherwise the heat would have been unbearable. By the time I walked up the steps to the apartment over the photography studio and knocked on her door, I had broken into a light sweat. Carla answered almost immediately and invited me inside her studio apartment. The air was moderately cool, and the window air conditioner was running full...

July 1982, Milford, Ohio On Tuesday morning, I kissed Kara goodbye and headed to my parents’ house for my usual morning routine with my little sister. She was happy that I could spend the morning with her and asked to take a walk, so we weren’t in the house with my mom. “Let me guess — this walk will end in the clearing,” I said with a smile. “Yes,” she said, taking my hand as we walked down Overlook towards Klondyke. February 16, 1997, Chicago, Illinois Our conversation during the Rap Session was about how to find ‘truth’ and both Elizabeth and I made a strong case for skepticism as the best approach to life. “But if you don’t believe anything is true, how can you decide what to do?” Brenna asked after a lengthy discussion about how to know what was true. “Remember what we said about listening carefully?” Elizabeth asked. “We operate as if the things we’ve come to believe actually are true, but always...

March 13, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “Hi, Steve!” Ailea said when she opened the door. “Hi,” I replied, accepting the offered hug. There was no touching of lips, just of cheeks, and I wondered if I’d misread her intentions at her birthday lunch, or if, perhaps, she detected my reluctance to return the offered affection. “Lunch is ready, so go ahead and sit. I’ll bring it in from the kitchen.” I went to the low table, sat down, and a minute later, Ailea brought miso soup and sushi, our usual...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 10 BridgetChapter 72 An Explosive Discovery

April 3, 1997, Dallas, Texas “Remember what I said about drinking too much,” I said, as I poured bourbon into three cups. We’d stopped at a liquor store, bought a bottle of Blanton’s, and then returned to the small suite I’d reserved at the Westin. Deborah’s room was down the hall, and Krissy’s was two floors below. Krissy’s comment had caught me a bit off guard, but I hadn’t reacted visibly. I didn’t know her quite well enough to know if she’d been teasing with Deborah, so I was being...

September 1, 1987, Chicago, Illinois “I heard that you have some kind of plan to help Ed,” I said to Connie. “There’s no plan,” she replied. “A witness who saw the shopkeeper alive after Ed left came forward.” That sounded convenient, and I wondered if the witness was real or someone that Anthony had put forward to solve the problem. August 17, 1997, Chicago, Illinois We finished lunch and Marissa and the younger kids went to play, but Natalie sat with the adults to talk, with coffee, tea, or soft drinks. The Sarcus were very comfortable, but the Heaths were still struggling. July 1979 — Falkenberg, Sweden On Friday, when I got back from my run, Pam was in her bra and panties again. I whistled at her, she giggled, then finished dressing. I showered, and we went to breakfast and finished up our last day. Once class was done, we were pretty much free. On Saturday, we’d have several optional activities and then on Sunday we’d head back to our host families. After dinner on Friday, I took Pam’s hand and we walked towards the river. November 8, 1993, Chicago, Illinois A dark fog swirled before my eyes as I tried to take stock. My head hurt, badly. I felt something on my face and realized, dimly, it was an oxygen mask. My right hand was uncomfortable and I recognized the feeling of an IV and pulse-oximeter. My left arm ached fiercely. On my chest I felt the pads and wires of an EKG. I didn’t feel anything else wrong as I continued taking inventory. I tried to open my eyes, but the fog didn’t clear. I tried to speak, but...

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois In the morning Anala and I ran as we had the previous time, then showered together, carefully washing each other’s bodies in an intimate but non-sexual way. After our shower we went to the kitchen and I made breakfast and we sat down to eat. “Steve, may I make a suggestion?” she asked. “Sure.” “Broaden your circle of friends. I took a shower, put on shorts and a t-shirt, and walked down the hall into my dad’s office.
