I blinked several times and took a breath before responding. It didn’t help. The best I could do was contain my visceral reaction at her completely out-of-line request and her wrong-headed assumptions when she had NO idea what had happened in my life the previous eight months.

“What makes you think you can make that request after refusing to talk to me for nearly eight months? And equally importantly, without explaining Alexi? And without giving me the first clue about what you expect from me?”

“Because of the deep, loving relationship we shared.”

“Which you cast away,” I replied. “I’m not trying to absolve myself from the mistakes I made, but you walked away.”

In fact, she’d walked away multiple times, and each time, in such a way that I couldn’t talk to her, and just as the first time, with the assumption she could walk back into my life and have what she wanted. I wasn’t buying what she was selling. But I’d hear her out.

“I could counter that by saying you drove me away.”

“You could, but in the end, that wouldn’t change what happened, even if I were to accept 99% of the responsibility. I could see needing time away, even extended time away, but eight months? Eight months which included you having your baby and naming him? That hurt!”

“I’m not trying to fight with you, Steve, but as much as you hurt me?”

“Was THAT why you did it? To hurt me?”

“Don’t you think we hurt each other? Repeatedly?”

“But on purpose?” I asked. “I know I hurt you by not seeing you as who you were, but who I imagined you to be, and I’m sure many other ways as well. But I didn’t do it on purpose!”

“But you knew your thinking was wrong!”

It was, but it sure wasn’t as wrong as HER thinking - that I’d somehow put aside Kara in favor of her. I may have been mistaken, but at this point, all I could say was that Michelle was delusional. It boggled my mind, and the fact that she didn’t seem to see it, only made me MORE upset.

“Escaping our ideas of how the world works, and who people are, is a really tough thing to do. I did get past it, eventually. But, if I can be blunt, you couldn’t overcome your view of how the world ought to work, and that’s what led you to leave. If you think about it, in the end, we both had the same obstacle to overcome, albeit we approached it from different directions.

“I saw you as someone who you were not; you wanted me to be someone I am not. In the end, how we viewed each other, and how we treated each other, created the gulf between us. I couldn’t get past the image of the novice nun, and you couldn’t accept that I’m not cut out for monogamy. In the end, though, I’m neither who you think I am, nor am I who you want me to be.

“What you see as my promiscuity is simply who I am, as seen through YOUR ideas of social norms. I’m totally in control of it now. Was I before? There were certainly times when I was not, but you left as I was getting things under control! And if I can be blunt, you snatched defeat from the jaws of victory because you couldn’t have the one thing you wanted which you had to know you couldn’t have from the beginning!

“If you want to talk about having a wrong view of the situation, I’m fine with that. The thing you have to admit is that you had an equally wrong view of the situation and chose to walk away instead of giving up on that wrongheaded view! Now you come back and ask me to make love to you? If I can be blunt, you’d have been better off asking me to fuck you senseless!”

“Will you fuck me senseless? And THEN talk to me?”

If I’d bet myself a billion dollars on her response, it would have been exactly that. Fundamentally, I was getting the idea she was baiting me. But why? To what end? Well, I wasn’t going to fuck her any more than I was going to make love to her. Not until I had SOME answers.

I shook my head, “I’m sure you remember my propensity to talk the ear off girls. Well, to even get me to consider either fucking you senseless or making love to you, you’re going to have to TALK to me, Michelle. We don’t have a relationship which justifies EITHER of those options. We’re too close to just fuck and too far away to make love.”

“For someone who has as much sex as you do, with as many girls as you’ve been with, that sounds pretty strange.”

She’d proven my point with that one sentence. She had NO idea who I was now. It was STILL about the girls I’d been with before. That made the situation effectively hopeless.

“If you believe THAT, then you understand me even less well than I thought you did!”

“Isn’t it true that you found reasons to fuck any girl you wanted to?”

Which was the last straw in my book. There was no way back that I could see.

“You know, if you think this approach is going to get you what you seem to want, you’re sorely mistaken. In fact, it’s more likely to end our conversation right now.”

Something hit me, and I had a sudden suspicion.

“Is this some kind of warped test?” I asked before she could answer. “If I refuse, I pass? If I agree to do it, I fail? Why are we here, Michelle? And what is it you want from me?”

“I suppose, at this point, nothing.”

“Nothing? Now you have me confused as hell! What about Nathaniel? Why have me be his godfather if you’re just going to walk away? Are you trying to lay some kind of weird guilt trip on me? Because if you are, it won’t work. I offered to help you in any way you wanted and offered to care for Nathaniel as if he were my own son, if that’s what you wanted. Instead, you came here for Loki knows what reason. Well, unless you tell me, right now, we’re walking out of here.”

“Then it’s goodbye,” she said.

She picked up her purse and walked towards the door.

“I have no idea what your game is, Michelle, but I’m not going to play. Walk out the door and that’s it. The only thing I want at that point is you to have a lawyer draw up a document terminating our agreement about Nathaniel. And for you to tell Father Basil you released me from any obligations as godfather.”

Without a word, she opened the door, and walked out of my life.

July 4, 1996, Chicago, Illinois

“Ready to talk about what happened with Michelle, now that you’ve had a good night’s sleep?” Jessica asked as we lay in bed on Thursday morning.

“It wasn’t just that, Babe. I didn’t want to spoil Stephie’s sixth birthday celebration.”

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to sound as if I felt it was wrong to wait. I was simply wondering if sleeping on it helped you decide what you think she intended.”

“I think she intended for me to send her away,” I said. “I’m reasonably certain that in her mind, that’s the only way it could ever end. I had to kick her out for her to finally be done.”

“I think I can see that,” Jessica said. “How do you feel?”

“Shitty about being so harsh with her, but I didn’t think I had a choice. It just felt as if she was purposefully messing with me, like it was a test. The other issue, and maybe the bigger one, was she purposefully went out of her way to accuse me of being willing to have sex with any girl who asked, which has never been true.”

“Michelle Bateman?” Kara asked.

“For one. There have been others I’ve turned down or simply refrained from responding to advances. The problem is, no matter what, she was always seeing me from HER perspective, and wasn’t interested in hearing mine, except to beat me over the head with it. And I just couldn’t accept that anymore.”

“That makes sense,” Jessica said. “But then I don’t get her making you Nathaniel’s godfather.”

“That’s the one thing I simply can’t make heads or tails of. The last thing I’d think about Michelle was that she was vindictive.”

“What if that’s not it,” Kara asked. “What if it was intended to be a failsafe?”

“Against what?”

“Something happening to her before she got engaged.”

“Alexi?”

“Does ANYTHING else make sense in your mind?” Kara asked.

“There’s not making sense and then there’s bat-shit crazy! Why not ask him? And why not get engaged beforehand, if that’s what it was?”

“Tiger, how well do you know her at this point?”

“Perhaps not as well as I think I do,” I allowed. “But it’s only been six weeks since she asked be to be Nathaniel’s godfather.”

“Do you have another option?” Jessica asked.

I shook my head, “Nothing makes sense, as I said. Maybe, assuming you’re correct, she was sending Alexi a message that the baby isn’t his. But if that was the case, I think it backfired because in addition to asking her to have an attorney draw up a document releasing me from my commitment, I asked her to let Father Basil know she was releasing me from my obligations as a godfather.”

“How does that work?”

I shrugged, “I’m not Orthodox, so who knows? I took it seriously, but I’m not sure she did. And the name?”

“Maybe part of the same thing? I mean, if the crazy idea that it’s a message is correct. I know this is a bit odd, but did anyone see the birth certificate?”

“I have no idea, and the baptism was in his given name - Nathaniel. But at this point, I think I need to just let it go. I believe she got what she came for - me sending her away.”

“Did you think about sleeping with her?” Kara asked.

I shook my head, “No. I went pretty much directly from surprise to outrage without anything in between.”

“I suspect the old Steve would have done it.”

I shrugged, “Maybe, because he would have still had feelings for her. No, that’s not quite right - he would have ACTED on the feelings for her, rather than ask the questions first.”

“You still have feelings for her, obviously.”

“Obviously, but they’re dampened by the way she’s treated me, and perhaps that was her intention. But now we’re in the realm of mind-reading, and only Jennifer and I could ever do that reliably with each other!”

“Does that still work, Tiger?”

“When we let our guards down,” I said. “But we don’t do that too often because we both know what might happen if we’re not exceedingly careful.”

“There really never has been anyone else like her, has there?”

“She’s my Jen and I’m her Steve. We found a way to make it work, despite everything arrayed against us. And there is a living, breathing, sometimes annoying proof of our extreme love for each other asleep in the second bedroom of the coach house right now.”

My wives laughed softly.

“He’s only annoying because he’s YOU, Steve!” Kara teased. “Well, he’s you and Jennifer.”

“Just as Birgit is you and Tiger, Kara.”

“None of the other kids are like that,” I observed. “They’re less a ‘mix’ of their parents and more of a product of the entire family.”

“You’re closer to Jesse and Birgit than the other kids,” Jessica said. “And I don’t mean that you ignore the other ones, it’s just your eldest son and eldest daughter bonded very closely with you. Ashley, Stephie, and Albert all get plenty of attention, but they don’t seem to need you the way Jesse and Birgit do. Nor do Matthew and Michael. They need you, but just not the same way.”

“And that will change as they get older,” Kara said. “They’re different people with different needs.”

“Just as my wives are,” I said.

“Well, what I need RIGHT NOW is a hard dick!” Kara giggled. “And a soft tongue!”

“I think we can oblige,” I chuckled. “What do you say, Jess?”

“Yes!”

An hour later, we got out of bed and went to the shower together. I very much enjoyed the three-way showers, as they allowed us to express our love for each other in a different way from what we had just done in bed.

“Are you planning on staying with Karla tonight?” Kara asked.

“If my wives allow it, yes.”

“Jess?” Kara said sexily. “Same as last time?”

“Yes!” Jessica growled.

“I want details this time!” I demanded.

“We girls get to keep our secrets, too, Tiger!” Jessica teased.

“Yes, we do!” Kara exclaimed. “Unless you want to share about Maria Cristina!”

“You don’t like to fight fair, do you?” I groused unconvincingly.

“Oooh!” Jessica squealed. “He used the ‘F’ word! You know what that means!”

Kara smirked, “The OTHER ‘F’ word – FLOGGERS!”

We finished our shower, dried off, dressed, and went downstairs to have breakfast. We were greeted at the bottom of the stairs by a scowling daughter, complete with hands on hips.

“Birgit honey,” Kara said sweetly, “Your mommies needed time with Daddy!”

“You took my cuddle time!” she said accusingly.

“Pumpkin,” I said soothingly, “I told you last night we were going to sleep late because we all had the day off.”

“You weren’t sleeping,” she giggled. “You were having sex!”

“Guilty as charged! I love your moms, so we do that! Let’s have breakfast and we can have cuddle time before we start getting ready for the party. Go wake up your brothers and sisters, and Aunt Elyse, please, and tell them breakfast is in twenty minutes. Knock on Karla’s door, too, please.”

“OK!” she agreed and scampered up the stairs.

“Deftly handled,” Kara whispered. “Crossing Birgit on cuddle time is putting your life at risk!”

We went into the kitchen where Jasmine was sitting at the table drinking coffee.

“I hope it’s OK that I started the coffee,” she said. “Usually everyone is up before me.”

“Absolutely.”

“I never asked, but how will things work for the ten days you’re gone?”

“The same as now. So long as the police or fire department aren’t involved, just enjoy having the house to yourself! It’s OK to have people over, just keep it below the level of needing cops in riot gear!”

Jasmine laughed, “You know me better than that! I’m more likely to cuddle up with a book and mint tea than have a wild party. But I may have a friend stay a few days.”

“That’s fine. Feel free to use anything in the fridge, pantry, or the liquor cabinets. Elyse will leave you some cash for incidentals. I don’t think you’ll run out of anything, but just in case.”

“You don’t have to do that.”

I chuckled, “I know how much they’re paying you at the Trib, as in, next to nothing.”

“Working with Stan Jakes would make it worth it if they didn’t pay me at all! I’ve learned so much in the last month. I didn’t realize how much news depends on confidential sources and people speaking on deep background. If Stan Jakes didn’t have a Rolodex with four thousand names in it, he couldn’t do his job properly.”

I nodded, “It’s all about building contacts. But you know what? That’s just as true for my business. Cindi, our VP of Sales and Support, busts her butt to make contacts in the medical and legal professions, while I do it in finance, real estate, and corporate governance. My contacts have made my job a LOT easier.”

“He told me he talks to you about computer stuff all the time.”

I nodded, “We meet about once every two months so he can ask questions about computers or technology. It never generates an article directly, but it helps him understand what’s going on. I’m sure you saw lots of people from all walks of life in his Rolodex.”

She laughed, “You think he lets me look at it? It’s locked in his desk and even his editor doesn’t get to see it!”

Which made me feel a LOT better! I had wondered how Stan would explain our relationship. How we met was easy, but why we were still in touch on a regular basis, and how I could call in the favor to help Jasmine get a job was something completely different. Being a regular source of information would explain that, without having to go into the OTHER information I provided.

“That does make sense. He’d need to guard that list zealously.”

“The downside is I don’t get to see how he conducts those interviews, but I totally understand why he can’t take me along.”

“When is your last day here?” Kara asked.

“My last day at the Trib is August 16th. I haven’t booked my return flight yet, but probably around the 20th if that’s OK.”

“Of course it’s OK! You’re welcome to stay as long as you like. Do you think you’ll come back next Summer?”

“If the Trib offers me an internship, you can count on it! I’m grateful for your hospitality.”

The kids began trooping into the kitchen, followed by Elyse and Karla. Birgit came to help Kara and me with preparing breakfast, and about fifteen minutes later, we served breakfast to the small horde in the kitchen - some at the table, some in stools at the island, and some of us standing. When we finished, Kara and Jessica offered to do the dishes so Birgit and I could have our cuddle time.

“How are you this morning, Pumpkin?” I asked when we cuddled in a chaise in the sunroom.

“Good! Tiffany and Rachel are coming to the party today. And Mom said Joseph and Amelia will be here, too!”

“Yes. Jake and Joyce will be here right after lunch. And Josh and Mary will be here, too. We’ll finally get to see their baby.”

“How old is Sandra?”

“Eighteen months, I think,” I said. “I’d have to look at my calendar to be sure.”

“Can I have a sleepover with Tiffany and Rachel?”

“Yes, but it would have to be after we get back from Florida. Talk with your moms about it, please.”

“Because it’s girl stuff?!” she giggled.

“It’s better if one of your moms talks to Tiffany’s mom. Rachel’s mom will be fine.”

“Rachel’s mom is cool! Tiffany’s mom is a pain in the butt!”

I laughed, “Do you say that about ME to your friends?”

“Sometimes!” she giggled. “You’re a boy, Dad. And boys can be REALLY dumb!”

“You know, I can get abuse like this anywhere. I don’t need to cuddle you to get it!”

“You love me, Dad!”

“I do; but that doesn’t mean you aren’t annoying!”

“Boys are WAY more annoying!” Birgit declared. “They act so dumb!”

I chuckled, “Just wait until you’re fourteen or fifteen. They’ll be even more dumb!”

“Because they want to have sex! And they’re dumb about it!”

“Who told you THAT?” I asked.

“Mom! And Aunt Jennifer. And Aunt Bethany. And Katy!”

I laughed, “OK, OK. I get it!”

“But Aunt Jennifer said you weren’t TOO dumb!”

“Aunt Jennifer talks WAY too much!”

“She loved you even though you were dumb!”

I chuckled, “A good thing, too, because your dad was pretty dumb back then.”

“And you knew Aunt Melanie and Aunt Kathy and Aunt Bethany then, too.”

“Yes. We were all friends back in Milford. Aunt Melanie started dating Uncle Pete back then, too. I met Aunt Elyse later.”

“I want to go to Sweden like you did.”

A WellLived Life 2 Book 7 SakurakoChapter 54 Westward Bound Or is it Eastward

June 15, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “That’s everything, I think,” I said. “My luggage is in the trunk of the car, I have my passport, tickets, and money, both dollars and yen. I can’t think of anything else.” “I’ll see you in five weeks,” Elyse said, giving me a quick hug. “Did you see they rioted in Vancouver last night because they lost the Stanley Cup?” I chuckled, “Only Canadians would riot when they LOSE the Cup! I did see that on the front page of the Trib. Are we ready?” “Michelle and...

The Knight and the Acolyte Book 8 Labyrinth of LoveChapter 8 Impaled by the Minotaur

Note: Thanks to b0b for beta reading this! Acolyte Sophia – The Labyrinth, the Island of Yalut The words of the Minotaur echoed down the hallway out of the darkness of the large room before us. The source of the foul stench pervading the Labyrinth flowed with it. In the glow of my pink, ethereal light bobbing beside me, I spotted a skeletal arm stretched out of the large room, fingers twisted in agony, one of the beast’s victims. My heart hammered fast. We were at the heart of the...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 5 Housemates

August 1981, Chicago, Illinois On Sunday morning, I made my usual call to Karin. I described everything in the apartment and all the things I’d done during the week, including the reception. Both of us would start school in a week and we were both looking forward to it. When we finished talking, I went out for my run, showered, and ate breakfast. I made some tea, started a load of laundry, and then turned on the stereo. I put on an REO Speedwagon album and then relaxed on the couch with the...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 63 Back to Work

August 21, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Unbelievable,” I said when I read the headline from the Chicago Tribune. “It says here that Solidarity activist Tadeusz Mazowiecki was nominated to be Prime Minister of Poland.” I hadn’t had a chance to read the paper on Sunday because it hadn’t been delivered before we left for the race track in Michigan. “So now what?” Kara asked. “We’re in totally uncharted territory. Your guess is as good as anyone’s right about now.” “Steve, do you have a minute?”...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 36 My Lifes Journey

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I woke up early on the First of July, because my body clock was still set to Swedish time. The flight back had been long but uneventful, and I was happy that the businessman in the seat next to me hadn’t wanted to talk. I read, wrote some longhand journal entries, ate, and generally relaxed while the plane zipped over the Atlantic. I’d come home, taken a sauna, eaten a light meal, and gone straight to bed, not bothering to check messages, look at the mail that...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 4 Calm Before the Storm

June 1977 When I got home, I grabbed a Coke and some chips and went right to my room. I didn’t think I could deal with my parents or Jeff or Stephanie. I just needed to be by myself. That wouldn’t seem odd to anyone, because I often went to my room to read. In addition, I now had the TV I’d received for my birthday. I flipped it on to WXIX Channel 19 and reruns of Gilligan’s Island and Green Acres played in the background while I read. I had to get my mind clear for the final exams that...

July, 1982, Milford, Ohio I woke up early on Friday morning to make breakfast for Kara and her mom before she went to work. Mrs. Blanchard was surprised, but very pleased. After her mom left for work, Kara gave me a fierce kiss. “Thanks for staying in and cooking breakfast for us,” Kara said. “I hope that doesn’t cause you trouble with Stephanie, with you breaking your normal routine.” “Don’t worry about it,” I said, kissing her back. “We got in a bit later than I expected, and she’ll...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 38 Jennifer

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois After Rosie left, I stripped the sheets from my bed, as well as the cover of the duvet, and tossed everything into the washing machine. I lit a lavender candle in the room, and then swept and dusted. I did a quick spot-check of the rest of the house and noticed that the tub in the sauna needed to be cleaned. I scrubbed it, then mopped the sauna floor with a damp sponge mop. I finished cleaning the sauna about the time the washing machine finished, so I moved...

March 25, 2000, Chicago, Illinois “What time do I need to have you home?” “8:00pm will be fine,” Misty replied. “My parents are in Normal visiting my brother at Illinois State. July 1982, Milford, Ohio On Tuesday morning, I kissed Kara goodbye and headed to my parents’ house for my usual morning routine with my little sister. She was happy that I could spend the morning with her and asked to take a walk, so we weren’t in the house with my mom. “Let me guess — this walk will end in the clearing,” I said with a smile. “Yes,” she said, taking my hand as we walked down Overlook towards Klondyke. June 1977 Friday ended up being a non-event. The more I thought about it, the more I was sure that there was no way on this earth I could say what happened between Birgit and me was a sin. Calling it a sin would debase it into a meaningless act. I could never do that. And the more I thought about Jennie McGrath, the more sure I was that I couldn’t call what she did for me a sin, either. If the church was right, I was going to hell. And frankly, there was no way that could be true. So I...

“So, how should we do these Stone’s songs?” Phil asked at our rehearsal session. “I think we all know the music, we just need to come up with a pretty awesome arrangement; we don’t want to sound like yet another cheap cover band.” “I had some ideas, if it’s okay for me to make some suggestions,” Allison said. “Of course it is,” Phil said. “Everyone can have a say, there’s no rule that says you can’t participate in the discussion.” “Thanks, Phil, I guess being the newest here, I’m a bit...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 5 MichelleChapter 77 Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous Part I

May 11, 1992, Chicago, Illinois Monday was turning out to be a LONG day. After my run and talk with Gina, and my talk with Elyse, I had a full day at the office scheduled. First was our leadership meeting in the morning, and then I had status meetings with each team. At lunch I’d gone to see Siobhán and explained that I was going to break off the sexual relationship, but that I wanted to remain friends. She was disappointed, but admitted that Thursday would have been the last time, since she...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 23 So Now You Turn Back Into Diana Prince

January 19, 1989, En-Route from LAX to ORD When the engines of the plane started, Jeri reached over and took my hand. She held it while we pushed away from the gate, and taxied for takeoff. Her grip tightened a bit as we hurtled down the runway, but nothing like the death grip she’d had on my arm for the flight out. The plane roared its way into the air and once we leveled out, Jeri’s grip loosened but she didn’t let go of my hand. “How are you doing?” I asked with a touch of...

A WellLived Life Book 7 Kara IIChapter 34 Old Routines and New Ideas

September 1982, Chicago, Illinois The weekend was quiet and besides homework, I worked on the program changes for Frank, called Karin, Tatyana, and Kara, and hung out with my usual study group. Monday was refreshingly normal. On Tuesday morning, I handed Katy my completed intake form. She put it in an envelope and stuck it in her bag. She said she’d let me know soon about the interview. On Tuesday afternoon, after having lunch with Stephie, I made my rounds and then I headed over to Sigma...

A WellLived Life Book 7 Kara IIChapter 35 An Interview and Some New Friends

October 1982, Chicago, Illinois The drive back to Chicago was as uneventful as usual, and I arrived at the apartment just before 6:00pm. When I arrived, Elyse and Stephie were sitting on the couch and Jackie was sitting on the loveseat. Stephie hopped up as I opened the door and greeted me with a hug and a kiss. “Hi, Peaches!” I said. “Glad you’re home, Yankee!” “Hi, Steve,” Elyse and Jackie both said. “Hey,” I replied. “How was the weekend?” “Well, it was just Kurt with me, Stephie,...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 52 Lifestyle Choices

June 11, 1989, Chicago, Illinois It was just after 3:00am when I kissed Trish goodbye. She’d been an enthusiastic, energetic, and adventurous lover. We’d done just about anything either of us could think of, though her breasts weren’t large enough for a tit-fuck. The last time had been in the shower where we’d ostensibly gone to clean up afterwards, but instead I ended up taking her from behind as she leaned against the wall of the shower. “I think I’ll have you again, Steve Adams,” she...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 38 Freshman Year Ends

May 1978 The first couple of weeks in May were busy with school, work, and friends. Except for Becky, I didn’t even have any dates. But I was OK with that. Well, almost OK. I wanted to see Anna, but it likely wasn’t going to happen until school was out. I had tutoring sessions with Melanie, but she still wouldn’t talk to me about anything other than Spanish. Barely a hello. I was grateful for the tutoring, but it was maddening seeing my friend this way. I hoped someday she could understand...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 44 Spring Break 1982 Part I

March, 1982, Milford, Ohio As I drove along I-65, I thought about what Stephanie had asked for and what Bethany had said without even knowing about the request. Of course, because Bethany and I were so in tune, she might have actually had an idea that I was struggling with getting involved with my sister again. I kept turning it over and over in my mind and I kept coming to the same conclusion — that I shouldn’t do it. I was torn between doing what Stephanie wanted and doing what Kara and...

September 7, 1992, Chicago, Illinois “That went reasonably well,” Michelle said when her parents drove off. “There were a few times I thought my expression would give away something I shouldn’t. You were messing with me, weren’t you?” She grabbed both my hands and smiled, “I was telling the truth, in my own way. Thank you!” She leaned forward and kissed my cheek. “So, what’s left?” I asked. “To visit UofC tomorrow and formally withdraw from classes. To spend some time with you and your...

October 1981, Chicago, Illinois I arrived back at the apartment just before 10:00pm and saw the address for the party. I decided I wasn’t particularly interested in going so I put on some music, poured myself a glass of wine, and started reading more about Russia. I was alternating between the history and culture book and the Communist Party book, decided on the history and culture book for this time. I didn’t get much reading done because I was thinking about Tatyana, which led me to...

January 23, 1996, Chicago, Illinois “Father, bless!” I said, greeting Father Basil with upturned palms. “Bless you, Stephen,” he said as I kissed his hand. The waiter showed us to a quiet table along the wall of Roditys in Greektown. He took our drink orders and was back quickly. We placed our food orders right away and he left to put them in with the kitchen. “I’m not quite sure how to address this, so I’m just going to ask you bluntly. Are you the father of Michelle’s baby?” I shook my...

June 29, 1995, Chicago, Illinois On Thursday, I finally had lunch with Melissa again, something I hadn’t been looking forward to. Much like with Cèlia, Melissa and I had passed an inflection point and I was left with sub-optimal paths forward. I’d been struggling with the possible solutions, and all of them had pitfalls. When I walked into Takumi, I had something of a plan. Whether it was good or not would only be known once everything played out. “I spoke to my wives,” I said after we’d...

December 5, 2000, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota “I had a good time last night,” I said. “I was surprised you invited a friend!” Mary laughed as we walked into the exam room, “Naomi had a good time as well. You know what a Resident’s life is like.” I nodded, “No social life.” “Exactly. March 1980, Hovås/Göteborg, Sweden I woke early as usual, but just enjoyed being in bed with Katt. When she woke, she hopped out of bed and pulled a robe out of her closet and handed it to me. “There’s a spare toothbrush in the bathroom. Go have your shower, then we’ll have breakfast after I have my shower.” I quickly showered and brushed my teeth, and went back to Katt’s room. She went to shower and came back a few minutes later. She dressed, and I got a very good look at her sexy body...

September 3, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Good morning, Sensei,” I said, bowing to Sensei Jim. “Good morning!” he said waving me to a chair in his office. “How was your trip?” I asked. “Enlightening. I spent most of my time acting as a manservant to Sensei Robert and Sensei Hiro.” “He who will lead, must first serve,” I said. “Someday, I’m going to send you to Sensei Hiro, should he live long enough. A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 61 Anala Part II

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I walked in the near 90°F heat to Carla’s place. I was grateful that the humidity of the morning had dropped significantly; otherwise the heat would have been unbearable. By the time I walked up the steps to the apartment over the photography studio and knocked on her door, I had broken into a light sweat. Carla answered almost immediately and invited me inside her studio apartment. The air was moderately cool, and the window air conditioner was running full...

March 13, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “Hi, Steve!” Ailea said when she opened the door. “Hi,” I replied, accepting the offered hug. There was no touching of lips, just of cheeks, and I wondered if I’d misread her intentions at her birthday lunch, or if, perhaps, she detected my reluctance to return the offered affection. “Lunch is ready, so go ahead and sit. I’ll bring it in from the kitchen.” I went to the low table, sat down, and a minute later, Ailea brought miso soup and sushi, our usual...

April 3, 1997, Dallas, Texas “Remember what I said about drinking too much,” I said, as I poured bourbon into three cups. We’d stopped at a liquor store, bought a bottle of Blanton’s, and then returned to the small suite I’d reserved at the Westin. Deborah’s room was down the hall, and Krissy’s was two floors below. Krissy’s comment had caught me a bit off guard, but I hadn’t reacted visibly. I didn’t know her quite well enough to know if she’d been teasing with Deborah, so I was being...

August 17, 1997, Chicago, Illinois We finished lunch and Marissa and the younger kids went to play, but Natalie sat with the adults to talk, with coffee, tea, or soft drinks. The Sarcus were very comfortable, but the Heaths were still struggling. But, vitally, they hadn’t left and hadn’t insisted Natalie leave the group. “Can you explain how you developed this attitude and approach?” Chris asked. July 1979 — Falkenberg, Sweden On Friday, when I got back from my run, Pam was in her bra and panties again. I whistled at her, she giggled, then finished dressing. I showered, and we went to breakfast and finished up our last day. Once class was done, we were pretty much free. On Saturday, we’d have several optional activities and then on Sunday we’d head back to our host families. After dinner on Friday, I took Pam’s hand and we walked towards the river. After the cabin crew picked up the trays and offered drinks again, they passed once more, offering headsets for the movie. Trevor and Maria took them, but Pam and I didn’t, instead we turned on...

November 8, 1993, Chicago, Illinois A dark fog swirled before my eyes as I tried to take stock. My head hurt, badly. I felt something on my face and realized, dimly, it was an oxygen mask. My right hand was uncomfortable and I recognized the feeling of an IV and pulse-oximeter. My left arm ached fiercely. On my chest I felt the pads and wires of an EKG. I didn’t feel anything else wrong as I continued taking inventory. I tried to open my eyes, but the fog didn’t clear. I tried to speak, but...

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois In the morning Anala and I ran as we had the previous time, then showered together, carefully washing each other’s bodies in an intimate but non-sexual way. After our shower we went to the kitchen and I made breakfast and we sat down to eat. “Steve, may I make a suggestion?” she asked. “Sure.” “Broaden your circle of friends. May 1979 The limo dropped me at home about 9:00pm. I took my stuff to my room, stripped, and hung up the tux. The rest of the things went into the hamper. I took a shower, put on shorts and a t-shirt, and walked down the hall into my dad’s office.
