The contractor drove up as Jeff was finishing his walkdown just after daylight. Eyeing the big trailer with the tractor sitting on it, Jeff waited until Dave had gotten out of the vehicle. "That rig is pretty long. Did you have any trouble with the driveway?"

Dave propped his foot on the bumper to retie the laces on one of his work-boots. "There was one curve where I had to back up and do a bit of jigging, but it wasn't bad. I've done it before. I went ahead and used the smaller of my dump trucks to pull the tractor trailer. I pull it a lot of the time with my big pickup, but not up that driveway. Hell, I've been up it a thousand times I guess, while we were building the convention center, but I still respect it. One mistake and you're toast, so I chose a truck I knew would easily handle the tractor and trailer on a steep slope."

"I don't blame you. Hey, I'll bet the driveway cut down on the sightseers while you were building the place," Jeff said, grinning as he checked out the posthole digger attached to the tractor.

Laces tied, Dave paused for a second. "I never really thought about that. But now that you mention it, we didn't have as many rubberneckers as we usually have, particularly with the job taking as long as this one did."

Dave turned back for the cab. "Hop in Mr. Matthews, you can ride out with me and show me exactly where you want the holes for the target frames." As Jeff got in the truck with Dave, the contractor continued, "I got my welder to do a little work yesterday. I hope you don't mind, but even though you're in a hurry for the range, I've made some changes. I got a friend of mine to let me check out the county range setup. They use a turning system that consists of a welded frame that looks like a 'T, ' with the holes for your two by two's on the ends of the wings of the 'T.' The center spike of the 'T' fits into the concrete, and it's a simple process to add a turning mechanism later on.

"Your wooden target frames just drop into the holes at the end of the wings just like you had originally suggested they do in the concrete. We made up ten stations. Heck, now we only have to drill ten holes instead of twenty. I hope you don't mind the changes. The range will be much better when we're done."

Jeff looked at Dave with new respect. "Actually, that's the way the outdoor range was set up in Georgia. I was just trying to make a 'get by' sort of thing, thinking that we would never need a turning target."

(Note to reader: This is a system where the targets are turned parallel to the shooters — edgeways. Instead of the command to fire, the targets all turn square to the shooters at the same time, initiating the beginning of the firing sequence. When time is up, the targets then snap back edgeways, signaling the end of firing.)

When they got to the designated area, they got out of the truck. As the contractor fished out some stakes, cord, and a flat-headed hammer, Jeff said, "Since you're improving on my sloppy design, we might as well put in the system of turning targets. Of course that doesn't have to be done now, but it will probably be nice in the weeks to come when we start working on combat shooting."

"Just about there for the first one," Jeff said, pointing.

Dave drove in the first stake and attached the cord. "Straight out this way?" he asked, feeding out the string as he walked away.

"Yeah, that looks good. Just make it so the targets face in the general direction of the house. That way we'll be shooting directly away from the house, which should cut down on the sound some. As far away as we are, we shouldn't even be able to hear it inside."

"We're almost level here," Dave said. "It won't take a lot to shoot a level and smooth it off with the tractor." After driving in the stake, he turned to Jeff. "I thought you might want some turning targets sooner or later, so I took the liberty of getting the name of the equipment company the county uses. We can get them to send us a catalogue so you can pick out what you want. They also offer a sort of trolley system that pulls a target across the range."

"Shooting at a moving target will add a lot to the training," Jeff agreed. "But first, I've got to teach two of them to shoot, period. Melissa and Jennie had never picked up a gun before this started, and they're both scared to death of them. Once they get use to shooting, they will probably get a kick out of shooting at a moving target. Diana is an excellent shot, and has even shot a little competition. Arlene and Laura have shot a good bit, as well, and Ann has, to a lesser degree. Doctor Boswell has shot a rifle, and hunted, but very little with a handgun. I'll call and get the catalogue. Once everyone is shooting competently, moving targets will spice up the training."

Dave fished out a scrap of paper with a name and phone number on it and handed it to Jeff.

"I appreciate your taking the time, particularly your off time, to get this set up right. The range I shot at in Georgia had turning targets. I was just going to do something quick. I'm so damn worried about this guy that I told you about, that I guess I'm trying to push things too much."

The contractor was kneeling, his hammer raised to drive in a stake. He stopped and looked up at Jeff. "I told my guys about this shithead, and you can bet they will be on the lookout for him. You and your family have been both good to us and very generous, as well. Do you think you could get us a picture of these two? Hell, we'll post it on the wall at the shop. I'll make photocopies and plaster their pictures on all my job sites. If he comes around any of my people, they'll let me know in a heartbeat."

"How many job sites do you have?" Jeff asked as they walked back toward the truck.

"I've got eight right now. None of them are very big." Knowing what Jeff was probably thinking, Dave added, "I've downsized considerably since we built the conference center, and even then, I subcontracted the bigger steel work to an outfit that had the necessary equipment."

Dave yelled and waved to two of his crew that had just pulled up behind the house. When he had their attention, he motioned for them to come to where he was standing.

"I'm going to get out of here and let you get your men started. When you can spare a few minutes, come to the kitchen. Diana said that she and the girls were going to bake homemade doughnuts this morning just after breakfast, and you and I need to talk."

Dave glanced at his watch. It's six twenty now. "It will take two or three hours before I can break for any length of time. Then I'll be there. Doughnuts sound great."

Jeff agreed, and walked back toward the house, greeting the two workers as they passed him. At the kitchen, he pushed the door instead of banging it open. Helen looked up from her paperwork and grinned at him. "Don't tell me you are going to stop slapping that door open. I was just beginning to get use to it," she teased.

"Have you got the coffee made, Teacher?" he laughed.

"Most definitely, Mr. Alpha Male."

Jeff got a cup, filled it, and mock-glared at her. She just smiled sweetly. Sitting down at the other end of the table, so, hopefully, the smell of his sweat wouldn't be too noticeable, he asked, "What's with the paperwork?"

Doctor Boswell made a show of sniffing the air. "Had a hard run, huh?" she asked, grinning. Both of them broke out laughing.

"Alright, alright," Jeff choked out, "you've gigged me enough this early in the morning. How did the girls do on the test yesterday afternoon?" he asked, although the girls had already told him they had aced the test.

Helen put her papers down, took a sip of coffee, then still holding the cup with both hands in front of her, she glanced at Jeff. "Better than any students I've ever had in my whole career. I don't want to push them so much that they become discouraged, though. What I've decided to do is give them books on a subject, let them study them for a week or two, then when they say they are ready, test them. If all goes the way I think it will, a couple of months from now — or less — we'll have four girls in college. I think, I know, that Arlene and Ann could do it quicker than that, but the firearms training will slow us down considerably." As Jeff started to say something, she set her cup down and waved her hand in a negative gesture to him. "That wasn't a derogatory comment. Just a statement of fact. And believe me, if the sergeant thinks that idiot is coming after us, I'm more than willing to spend some time learning to shoot a handgun."

A little after nine, the contractor knocked on the kitchen door. A chorus of "come in" greeted him.

Jeff motioned him to sit with him at the big kitchen table. Arlene had a cup of coffee in front of him by the time he had settled into his chair.

Diana finished pouring glaze on six doughnuts resting on a wire rack she had put them on after taking them out of the deep fryer. She slid them onto a platter and set them in front of Dave. "Looks like your timing is good, Dave. Dig in while they're hot."

Dave knew damn well that it was her timing, not his, that was good. He would bet that she pulled those doughnuts out of the grease when she saw him walking toward the house on the security camera. These people are class. Hell, I'm even beginning to like their Georgia accents. It's not a southern drawl like in the movies, but there is just a hint there that makes it nice to listen to them talk, particularly the women.

The contractor tried never to stare at the women, at least to not get caught doing it, and he harped at his men, "Watch your eyes. If they speak to you, don't talk to their tits," he repeatedly told them. But it was hard to keep his own eyes from drifting as Diana's leaned over and put the doughnuts in front of him.

"Thank you Ma'am," he said with a nod.

"Oh, so formal," Diana teased, as she grinned and walked away.

Dave took a doughnut and shoved the platter toward Jeff, who for some reason, chuckled. Within a couple of minutes, Diana set a fresh platter in front of Jeff, and moved the original platter back in front of Dave, restocked. Now Dave knew why Jeff had laughed. He knew that Diana meant for each of them to have a platter full. Shit I can't eat six of these things. Particularly, as big as they are. Hell, they're delicious, but if I fill up now, I'll want to take a nap instead of going back to work.

Dave finished the first doughnut and took a sip of coffee just as Ann put a big glass of ice-cold milk beside him — the glass itself was frosted and so cold that he knew it had been in the freezer until she poured the milk into it. Smiling at him, she said, "Sometime milk goes really good with fresh doughnuts. Helen set a glass in front of Jeff at the same time."

Dave smiled back at her. "You people are going to kill me. But I'm going to die happy."

"Eat up," Jeff said, "you can handle a few extra pounds."

Shortly, there were two more platters of doughnuts on the table and all the women sat down with them, including Doctor Boswell.

"Okay," Jeff said. "Family meeting. And Helen, I'm glad we didn't have to twist your arm to get you to stay this time."

Boswell tipped her coffee cup at him, smiling, but didn't say anything.

Dave looked perplexed. What am I doing at their family meeting?

Answering Dave's unspoken question, Jeff said, "And yes, it involves you Dave." Glancing around the table, he began, "Diana and I have briefly discussed some aspects of this, but not in any detail. And Dave, so you will understand, we decide, at least the main things concerning our household, in our family meetings. Sometimes, they are rather informal. We had one to decide whether we wanted Doctor Boswell," he continued, grinning at Helen. It took only a glance around the room, eye contact and a slight nod. One hundred percent in ten seconds. If it hadn't been one hundred percent, she wouldn't be here."

Jeff winked at her and she smiled back at him. "Now to today's agenda." Jeff paused, took a sip of coffee, then glanced around the table, his eyes coming to rest on Dave. "I going to mention some things about our family today that must remain in this room. You have earned our respect and trust, just as you did Frank Wainwright's. Obviously he was the one that recommended you to me in the beginning."

The contractor glanced at the women, then back to Jeff, wondering what was coming next.

Jeff continued, "We appreciate the excellent quality of your work. I've checked this house, the wiring, plumbing, foundations (what I can see of them), the wind generators, the solar setup on the roof, the backup systems, hell, everything. Not to mention the lab you built, or the changes in our suite. And everything is top notch. Nothing was skimped, nothing shoddy. Recently, I had a long talk with Frank, and one of the vice presidents that were in charge of getting the convention center built. They both said, that even though you did, indeed, subcontract some of the big work, you had your hand in everything. They also related a couple of instances where you refused the subs work, made them tear it down and do it right. Frank said he doubled your bonus when the job was done because of the combination of things I just mentioned."

Jennie realized that Dave's cup was empty. Quietly, she got up and refilled it, topping Jeff's off as well.

Jeff smiled his thanks at her. "We came into a lot of money a couple of months ago when I sold some of my patents to an invention. I also had a bit of luck with investments, thanks to a genus I hired to manage part of our money. We could just let the money sit. We could blow it on useless things just so everyone would know we're rich. But Laura, Diana and I have had to work very hard from the time we were in our teens. Our girls haven't had it very easy, either. We're basically use to not having a lot, but now we can have practically anything we want. None of us want a fleet of half million dollar cars, and we don't use drugs. So what do we spend our money on?

"You're an intelligent person Dave, and you've been around us a lot lately. We're not your average family under any description I can think of. I'm sure you had suspicions before, but after remodeling that suite with multiple stalls in the bathroom, and multiple vanity sinks, you would have to be rather more than dense to not know what is going on. Bluntly, these are my women, and I'm their man. I am responsible for them. This thing with Hagewood has just emphasized other things that I have been thinking about. Our country is in turmoil, hell, the world is in turmoil. Some idiot could drive a van across the border from Mexico any day with a nuclear device in it. Some penny ante dictator could release a virus that would kill half the population of the world. Anyone that thinks Homeland Security is doing anything constructive to stop things like that... well, I hope they're right. But I think it's a big hope.

"Like I said, Diana and I have talked a little about what we could do to keep our family safe, both from the Hagewood threat, and a nuclear or catastrophic event of some other nature. I.e., a safe area well underground with supplies to last for an extended period of time. This would be a big enough project, not to mention the ones you already have on the drawing board, to occupy you exclusively for the next couple of years. I want — we want, quality, and a level-headedness that you have already exemplified."

"You're talking about an underground safe room?"

"No. I'm talking about an underground fortress, if you will, with a large area, many rooms, and everything that we would need to withstand a nuclear or viral/bacterial holocaust. Oh, I don't mean a direct hit, but I do mean that if Denver and a dozen other cities in the US were hit, that we could survive."

Dave sat his coffee cup down. "Shit Jeff. I don't know. I've never done anything like that before. It would call for a lot of specialty equipment, heck, I don't even know enough about it to know what I don't know," he laughed. You probably need some really big construction outfit..."

"No," Jeff cut him off. "You do."

"What... ?"

"I want you to boss it. Hire the companies you need — run the thing. My family and I will rough out the basic design, then we'll find an architect and let him hire the structural engineer, or whomever he needs to complete the design. Plus we want your practical input for every step of the process. When the design is done, you build it."

"Shit," Dave whispered, not noticing either slip in front of the women.

The girls looked at each other, their eyes big. Everyone started talking at the same time. Jeff picked up another doughnut, sat back and leisurely took a bite. Diana looked at her husband, and slow-winked. "I think you got their attention, Husband."

Dave took a sip of coffee. Jeff noted that the contractor's hand wasn't quite as steady as it had been.

For a few seconds, there was quiet. Dave cleared his throat and glanced back at Jeff. As he started to say something, Jeff spoke up. "Dave, I want to hire you for the duration. You can still use your company to do any of the work here that you want to, and hire other outfits to do the rest. You can hire all the people, professional and otherwise, that you think you need. We will start an account with your name on it, and put enough money in it so you'll know we're serious. The salary will be substantial, and again, when you're done, you will still have your company.

"All in favor of Dave supervising the building of our fortress, raise your hands."

Stunned, Dave watched everyone immediately raise their hand. Diana slid her chair back and walked around the table, stopping beside Dave. "Stand, please," she simply said.

When he scrambled to his feet, she hugged him. All the other women quickly followed suit. "Well, that makes it official," Jeff laughed. "Now, all you have to do is say yes."

Dave sat back down, and the women went back to the other side of the kitchen to continue their doughnut production line. "Jeff, I've got to think about this. And talk to my wife. She's at least half the reason I'm where I am today. She's my partner, and my best friend. She needs to be involved in this..."

Arlene Ch 2

This story illustrates a risk of sex under hypnosis. It could be called rape. This story builds on ‘Arlene Gets Hypnotized,’ my previous story. * * * * * I was sitting in my office at the University when Arlene walked into my open office. ‘Professor, are you busy?’ I probably was, but Arlene was a delight to look at and to have around. Especially to a 58 year old psychology professor who was pretty much reduced to dreaming about what had been and might have been. ‘Well, I was deep in...

Arlene and JeffChapter 22

At eight on the dot, he carried a laughing Jennie into an instantly quiet kitchen. Still in his arms, Jennie kissed him. Turning to the other wives, she gave the proclamation, "I'm full of come," then followed with, "but ... I'm broken." That started the usual scramble, but they had the pussy cream in the kitchen this time, and Jeff insisted that he carry her to the hot tub. He kissed her tenderly, then was shooed away by Diana, who kissed him and whispered. "That glow on her face...

Arlene and JeffChapter 712

The Retreat Arlene and Ann finally managed to get Jeff reasonably alone for a couple of minutes. After kissing him passionately, Arlene transferred Little One to the Prime’s shoulder, where she made her way under his collar to her usual resting place spread across his back. As soon as she had settled in, he told her how much he loved and missed her before giving her a brief account of the trip. Little One told him how much she missed him and shared the happenings in Germany. All of this was...

Arlene and JeffChapter 117

THE RETREAT: LATE THURSDAY NIGHT Arlene and Selina sat on Selina's bed, their backs propped against pillows as they played with Billy. Arlene slid her hand back and forth under the sheet as Billy pretended to stalk a terribly dangerous prey. He held his body and his head very close to the bed, occasionally lifting his head slightly to peek at his target, the tip of his tail twitching continuously. Then, he would jump as high as he could, coming down on Arlene's hand, tussling with it...

A shaking of Ann's shoulder accompanied a discordant buzz from her watch. "Plebe, you have thirty minutes to shower, dress and get to your first class. You don't have time for breakfast today, so ask the AI for a couple of energy bars." Ann, bleary-eyed, shut her alarm off and swung her legs out of her bed as the Class Lieutenant, already immaculately clad in her uniform, stepped back to give the smaller girl room to stand. "Thanks, Arlene," Ann mumbled as she came to her feet and...

Arlene and JeffChapter 410

The Mission Hours later, Arlene and Ann, tired, eased to the edge of a high rock bluff overlooking the massive power station in the distance. “Well, they sure don’t bother to conserve energy, at least with their lights,” Arlene sarcastically remarked as they stared at the brilliantly lit station. Worried that they might be discovered, both young women had employed their sensors over the edge to gather information before proceeding with their mission. “Just how are we supposed to get from...

The women had pushed the two kitchen tables together. Frank Wainwright stood looking at them as Jeff, Kayla, and Diana came in. "We either need to get a bigger table in here, or start eating in the dining room." "Bigger table," Jeff and Diana said at almost the same time. "The dining room is too formal," Diana continued. "We want to be a family, and with all of us for three meals a day, it's a lot easier to serve in here than taking the food into the dining room. The kitchen is...

Ship ...”We were still here all the time?” Kathy got out with amazement. “Ann told me that Ship’s training was very realistic, but this is beyond...” she finished as her voice trailed off. Bill automatically put an arm about his wife as he cast a look around the room. “Arlene and Ann had something they needed to do, but they will meet you in the lounge,” Ship told them. Bill, Kathy, Arlene Ann and the two crews that had flown the training mission with them were all sitting around a big...

During breakfast in the dining room, Diana stood and tapped a spoon on her orange juice glass. When the room quieted, "Most of you already know, but for the ones who don't, Frank, Margaret, Tina, Bill, Kathy and Jill will be back from the island this morning. Margaret called me late yesterday from their hotel suite in Los Angeles. She said they were anxious to get home and would leave really early for the last leg of their trip back. The Retreat ... The Sheriff and his family had left. Jeff and Joe Martin were sitting in the living room talking while the women had gone somewhere, probably to the bathroom. “So, how’s the honeymoon going?” Jeff, at a loss for a topic, asked uncomfortably, not wanting to get into the subject that he thought Arlene should take care of. “Great. I’m still amazed that she actually married me. Sir, the woman brought some polish along and polished her wedding ring – a brand-new wedding ring. I...

... Ann raised a foot from the muck to shake off something that wiggled and flopped about as it tried to use its teeth and suckers on the near-impervious suit. But the skin suit sluffed off the creature’s actions without much notice, and she stomped it into the muck. A few minutes later, they were out of the water and on a long peninsula of muddy land that extended partway through the swamp. Tired, the two stopped for a breather. Turning, Ann started to make a comment, but instead screamed...

... Ann looked at the screen in front of her. “See that?” “Yeah,” Arlene said with a sigh. “Continental shelf. Our world is going shallow. We’re almost there.” “Chances are that very shortly we’re going to be brain dead for real,” Ann quietly said as she began yet another check of their systems. A few minutes later, they came to a halt in water no more than fifty feet deep. “I don’t see any signs of our intruder on my screen. How about yours?” Ann shook her head, then realized that...

Jeff had gotten a bid from the dealer on the Internet and there wasn't a salesman involved. The sales manager handled the business. "How long to prep the black one?" The manager grinned. "After I talked with you on the phone, I went ahead and prepped it, just in case. All I have to do is gas it up and it will be ready." "Fine. Do it, and we'll get the paperwork out of the way." Diana came back with a washcloth and helped her mother put it between her legs, and also helped her get her panties and shorts back on. Susan was still mostly out of it, her motions and actions slow and somewhat uncoordinated. "You really blew her away," Diana said to her husband as she sat and pulled her mother into her arms. "She really blew me away, too," Jeff said as he touched Susan's cheek. "I was aware enough to support most of my weight on my forearms, but all I wanted to do...

Muttering to herself, her face red, she hung the vacuum on the side of the cart and started for the next suite. "What's wrong, Meemi?" Arlene asked as she caught up to her grandmother. "Two people. Diana parked in front of the art supply store. Hope, sitting in the second seat with Ann, started to open her door, but Ann put out a restraining hand. "Let Security do their thing first." "Are we really in that much danger?" Diana spoke up from the driver's seat. Laura woke him the usual way, and she almost went too far. When Jeff grunted and his cock started to swell, she jerked her mouth off. It was a near thing for a few seconds. "I guess I almost went off while I was still asleep," he groaned. "Wow, I'm really horny." "Sorry, Jeff. You usually go forever. I wouldn't mess it up for Diana for the world." "It wasn't your fault," he said, finally regaining control. "It's just the stress of the day. Of course, I've had two of those damn...

Arlene and JeffChapter 257

In their bedroom, dressed in pajamas, the girls flopped into bed. Terry grabbed the remote and dialed the lights down, then turned to her sister. "Arlene said that we wouldn't have any more periods until Little One turns them on for us again. Boy, I can sure live with that." Alice got a look on her face and responded, "Well, as you know, I've only had one, but it sure was icky – not to say anything about worrying if I were bleeding to death. If that's what it takes to be a woman, I...

Arlene and JeffChapter 297

Jeff and his women had showered and were in bed only moments when Ship announced that Arlene's scout was minutes away. Since the family was still using their suite on the Ship, they were quickly dressed – well partially anyway – and waiting for Arlene as she maneuvered her scout through the outer bay door and onto the flight deck. She didn't go all the way to the scout's bay though, but stopped in front of her family. An instant after the scout came to a halt, its belly hatch opened and...

The Waterfall Campsite ... Dessie straightened up and stared at Ann. “I have eaten pheasant, fish and rabbit until they’re practically coming out my ears. I’ve had MREs while backpacking and wasn’t in love with them all that much, but I think I would love some now, no matter what the meal consists of.” “We have an assortment. I noticed a Brisket Entreé, Chicken something or other, and a Beef Stew, with whatever goes with them, and several more besides. We just grabbed some at random in...

JUST OUTSIDE A SMALL NORTHWESTERN TOWN Once again Nichols sat worrying in front of his boss' elegant desk. Rich, wealthy, words don't describe the extreme category the older man fit into. Nor can you describe how evil this man is either, Nichols thought, his face devoid of expression as he waited for Mr. Moreau to end his phone call. Nichols dreaded that. When the call ended, Moreau would ask questions that Nichols didn't have acceptable answers to. The town council members think Moreau...

Jeff, Diana, Dave and Evie sat in the living room, waiting. When the phone rang, Diana checked the caller ID and answered. "Glad you guys are back." "Diana, I..." The voice chopped off, then Carla cleared her throat and tried again. "Diana, our dreams..." Carla's voice stopped again, to be replaced by quiet sobs of joy. "I can't..." "You just did," Diana said softly. "You're on speaker, so all of us can hear you. Jeff, Dave and Evie are here with me and listening. And, you're...

...”See that tree that has the broken limb hanging down?” “Yes,” Aiko gasped out. “We’ll jog to it, then we will walk for a hundred steps.” “I don’t know...” “Yes, you do. You know you can. I’ll bet it’s even less than a hundred steps. Let’s count them,” she finished as she began counting their steps aloud while they slow-jogged. Soon Aiko added her voice. “Ninety-two. Told you it was less than a hundred. Now we’ll walk for a hundred steps, and rested or not, we will jog starting at...

The Retreat As Charlotte and Diana sat at the bar in the kitchen watching the other women, Selina stopped by. "Want to help?" the little genius asked the young woman. Worried, Charlotte answered, "Everything is happening so fast that I barely know what's going on." "Oh, you will get used to that," Selina said as she reached for Charlotte's hand. "Well, I'll be glad to help if I can." Charlotte glanced at Diana, who nodded with a smile. "No better way than to just dive...

Arlene and JeffChapter 220

They were high up and soon over the ocean, having left the continent behind. They passed the terminator and continued into night, still headed west, the myriad lights of the cities twinkling as the Earth seemed to slowly spin below. But before the view could become boring – if it ever could -- the horizon seemed to shift downward on the big screen as the Ship gradually pointed her nose away from the planet, the full moon drifting down toward the center of the viewscreen. There was a...

Jeff met with Kei, Edi and Alesha on the updated design that they were working on for the new ski lodge, then stopped off in the living room to watch the late news before eventually winding up in his suite. After a shower where he "played" with Jennie and Melissa, he walked into a strangely quiet bedroom. Looking around, he began to wonder. "What?" he asked, then suddenly it hit him, "Where's Ann?" Arlene caught his eye. "We've looked for her, and she's not anywhere in the Retreat....

The Castle ...”Certainly,” Arlene responded, “but please don’t either of you touch it. The AI can become quite persnickety, and he has the means to back up his displeasure.” “You have a functioning artificial intelligence?” Karl asked. “Please don’t mention it around him. I think he is trying to find a way to become a citizen,” Arlene returned with a chuckle. “Uh, I won’t,” Karl responded, not quite sure if Arlene were kidding or not. Both Karl and Fischer thanked Arlene and hurried off...

Arlene and JeffChapter 228

Jeff had stopped by his office to pick up a few pieces of printer paper. Alone in the living room a couple of minutes later, he wadded up a sheet of the paper into a loose ball. If I screw up with this paper ball, air resistance, if nothing else, should keep its flight slow enough to prevent me from tearing up things. With Arlene's encouragement while on the Ship's range, he had gained a small measure of expertise as he mentally moved a steel ball around and caused it to spin, but he still...

The Mission ... Both were tempted to use their suits’ drive units, but they knew that would alert the Throme if anything would. Scrambling down, they were soon in the water. A hundred meters out, they saw a glint of movement coming toward them just under the surface. “Let’s go home,” Arlene said to her partner. As soon as the hatch closed and even before they were out of the airlock, the AI had them moving away from land. “Oh, I so want to get out of this suit,” Arlene grumped a few...

The Retreat Shortly after lunch, Arlene went out to the Ship expecting to sit in one of the command couches and be swept away by the simulator to another very realistic space battle, but she froze as soon as she passed through the hatch. Jeff had called Kayla and Art to his office, intending to ask them to begin training in the Ship's simulator. Before he could begin, the AI turned the TV on to show Arlene jogging back from the Ship. The AI didn't say anything, but apparently thought...

The Retreat After breakfast, Arlene, Ann and Selina gathered enough food to last them the rest of the day. “Should this not be the correct castle and we continue the search, we will need something to drink with our lunch,” Selina said as she opened a refrigerator. “There is water available at each station on the interceptor. As for soft drinks, please bring only what you are sure you will drink. Storage space is at a premium,” Arlene told the seven-year-old. “Bathroom?” Selina asked as...

Jeff had just dialed his next door neighbor who lived a mile down the road. "Steve Sperman here." "Hi Mr. Sperman. This is Jeff. How's it going?" "Hmmm. Didn't we have a discussion about that Mr. thing?" Jeff chuckled. "Yeah, I guess we did, Steve. How's Marcie doing?" There was a hesitation. "You know, that's a funny thing, like I mentioned before. Seems like after the night we spent at your place, ol' Uncle Arthur (arthritis) suddenly got much better. Odd that both of us...

The Prison Planet Ship had received permission from her Prime to go back to Earth long enough to pick up Arlene, Ann and the other aviators, then take the Wing to orbit for its launch. The trip to Earth and back would only take a few minutes. Giving the interceptors a ride to orbit and their launch would take only a few minutes more. The interceptors normally remained in their bays on Ship’s flight deck, so she would have to go back anyway. Also, she would have to return to Earth again when...

Deep Space "Question is, are they going to notice us?" Ann asked as she watched as one of the alien vessels came from behind a large chunk of moon and headed straight for them. Ann knew she could not warp out without her drive trying to take some of the debris field with them, which would probably result in the destruction of her warp drive, and/or her ship. In addition, she strongly suspected that the aliens would pick up her inertialess drive's signature, should she use that with them...

“Despite our AIs actually doing the flying, I want every pilot to have his or her hands on the controls at all times when we do this for real, and when we practice as well. Ann and I have put together a rough outline. Everything seems to work in the simulation, but we haven’t done it for real yet. There could very well be glaring errors that only show up when actually flying the patterns. Bottom line: be careful and think about what the next step is. Does the current process make sense with...

When they left the suite a few minutes later, they saw Melissa at the far end of the hall. She seemed to do a double-take, then turned and rushed around the corner, probably heading for the kitchen. A little later, when they walked through the door, she was already setting out two more plates. Jeff pulled Ann tighter against him, and they stopped just inside the kitchen. I know Ann is blushing. Damn, I thought I was too old to blush, but my face feels like it’s on fire. Everyone was seated...

EARLIER IN THE MORNING AT QUINTON TATE'S HOME After his morning shower, Quinton, dressed in his uniform and still buckling on his gun belt, walked into the kitchen. Before he could sit down, the phone rang. "Quinton," he said, putting the instrument to his ear as he finished securing the belt with the keepers. "Well, good morning. "We still have a problem," Diana said. "I doubt if Billy has ever used a litter box. So how are we going to train him to use it and not pee on the carpet? Since there aren't any pet stores in Winter Park, I guess we can order a kennel on the Internet and have it overnighted, but as late as it is, it will still be day after tomorrow before it gets here..." The Retreat ... Charlotte and Ada sat for a moment as Diana's words sank in. Both mother and daughter were clearly skeptical as they furtively glanced at the other three women. Diana let out a chuckle. "You can say it; we won't get mad." Ada hesitated. "This is no joke? You're actually telling us that Susan is your mother and Arlene is your daughter?" Jeff sat in his usual place at the head of the table. Frank Wainwright sat to Jeff's right as the family (minus four who were eating with Margaret and Tina in their suite) ate lunch. All the Alphas ate a lot, and Jeff usually ate more than most of them, but today, he was hungrier than usual. He had gone through his first plate and was already started on his second one. Joyce, Caitlin, Jennie, Melissa and Ann came in with the latter two pushing serving carts. Soon, the table was set and food arrayed in front of Arlene, Diana, Susan and Jeff. The wives' efficiency was not lost on Susan, but she refused to acknowledge it due to her sour mood. Each time she had talked to her daughter or granddaughter on the phone lately, her suspicions that something was going on had increased. Then the introductions in the living room were almost more than she could...

Everyone except Matt and Courtney was waiting in the living room. The new SAC and his wife had borrowed an Escalade and driven down to Winter Park. "HELICOPTER APPROACHING FROM THE NORTH. Aboard Ship, Arlene, Ann and Selina are teaching the Morales family how to field strip, clean and reassemble a pulse rifle. ...”Very good, Mr. Morales. As everyone walked down the hall toward the theater, Selina hung back. When Diana turned and caught her eye, Selina, with purpose, walked on past, turned the corner and went on to her suite. If I do not ask, then the answer cannot be no, she thought. Waiting four minutes by her internal clock, she walked back out of her suite, down the hall and peeked around the corner in the direction of the theater. There was no one in the hallway. Shortly, she slowly opened the theater door the tiniest...

With the Alphas at Security headquarters studying the pulse rifle and the women apparently all in the basement, Jeff wandered through the Retreat at a loss as to what he should be doing. Deciding he would work in his lab to pass the time, he returned to the basement. Now get out of my face before I change my mind and do what I know should be done.” Without saluting, Worthington spun on his heel and stomped out. Jeff sat thinking. Should I tell his Commander why I’m sending him back? After a moment, he shrugged. On second thought, I asked for his best aviators to give them a chance in my unit. No one, other than us,...
