August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois

On Tuesday night when I arrived home from karate, I saw the message light on my answering machine flashing. I decided to shower before listening to it so I walked into the bathroom and quickly got out of my gi and into the shower. After washing up, I put on my silk pajama bottoms and a loose t-shirt and pressed ‘play’ on the answering machine.

Hi Steve. It’s Carla Rizzi. Would you please call me when you have a chance? I’d like to talk to you.

I pressed erase and thought about whether or not to return the call. I had told her that she needed to sort things out and I figured I at least owed her a return call. I looked up her number and dialed it. She answered on the fourth ring.

“Hi Carla, it’s Steve Adams. I’m returning your call.”

“Hi. I was wondering if you might want to get a cup of coffee or something so we could talk.”

“Sure, I suppose I can do that. When?”

“What are you doing right now?”

“Talking to you!” I chuckled, “But seriously, I just came back from karate and I’m sitting in pajama bottoms and a t-shirt. I don’t feel like going out tonight.”

“What about Thursday sometime?” she asked.

“How about mid-afternoon? Say 3:00pm at the coffee shop on Hyde Park just east of Woodlawn.”

“See you then,” she said.

I hung up and went down to get something to drink. Jackie saw me and asked if I was busy. When I said that I wasn’t she asked if I wanted to play some chess. I agreed and we went to the great room where I’d put the chess table and realized there weren’t any comfortable chairs for playing. I suggested we use the kitchen table and we took the board and pieces with us and sat in the breakfast nook and played three games.

Fortunately for me, Jackie wasn’t as good as Becky and I actually won one of the three games. I was still pretty rusty, something that only a significant amount of playing would solve, and I simply didn’t have the time for it. On the other hand, playing casually would improve my game so that I could at least hold my own against other casual players. When we finished the third game, we returned the board and pieces to the great room and I headed back up to my room.

I started up the Apple IIe, loaded up VisiCalc and updated my list of things I needed for the house. I also adjusted my budget based on the union contracts and how much I had coming in from my housemates. When I finished, I read a few chapters from Atlas Shrugged and then went to bed and slept quite soundly.

Wednesday was a repeat of Monday and nothing exciting happened on campus. After dinner that evening, Penny showed up as planned and we spent about ninety minutes in the study room. I realized that there was going to be a problem if I needed to talk to her with the computers in there, because it was supposed to be a quiet room. We hadn’t bothered Jackie who was hard at work on the drafting board, but if anyone else had been in there it might have been an issue. I’d have to figure something out.

After Penny went home, I went upstairs to call the Blanchards’ to check on Kara. According to Nancy, Kara was doing about the same. I then talked to Kara for a few minutes and decided that I agreed with Nancy’s assessment. I heard sparks of Kara’s personality returning, but it was fleeting in each case. I felt that was a good sign, but she still had a long way to go.

When I hung up I called Bethany to see how she was doing. She and Pam were settled in and classes had started. She had been out on a date with Bob on Sunday, but otherwise was just trying to get back into the swing of school.

“I told Jennifer I loved her on Monday,” I said.

“So? You’ve said that to her since ninth grade. Even when you guys had your issues.”

“No, Bethany. I told her that I LOVED her.”

“Whoa! Like ‘I love you will you marry me’?”

I chuckled, “Not quite, but I told her I’m ready to take the next step. I think she was close to giving up on me, honestly.”

“Yes and no. She could wait you out because you never objected to her exploring her long-term relationships with girls, so she wasn’t waiting on you so much as hoping you would get your head out of your butt at some point. She never stopped hoping, but she wasn’t counting on it like some of the other girls. So now what?”

“We’ll keep talking. She’s coming to see me after Christmas. Her comment was that if either of us can walk at the end of that week, then we’ve failed.”

Bethany laughed, “Same old Jennifer. So where does that leave you with the other girls?”

“Well, except for the Swedish girls, there isn’t anybody except you that I’m involved with like that. Stephie and I are obviously done, at least as far as I can tell. Anna Wilson is interested, but I’m not, really. Anala is an enigma, almost as much as I am, but I’m not worried about her. And you know that Kara’s about as far out of the picture as she could possibly be.”

“Now I know you’re not sitting around celibate, but I think this is the first time in a long time that you haven’t had someone close to you to be with all the time, and yet, you seem calm and comfortable. Who’s providing the outlet?”

“Stephie, occasionally, of course. And Jackie’s available if I need her, as is Elyse. There’re a few other girls here and there who I’m talking to or seeing, but honestly, nobody who is thinking in terms of a long-term relationship.”

“So what about Tatyana, Sofia, Karin, and Tina?”

“I’ll see Tatyana in about a week. She herself has acknowledged the huge impediments and I think she’s seen the writing on the wall, so to speak. As much as I like her, and as much as she likes me, the chasm is just too wide for either of us to cross. Stranger things have happened, I’m sure, but I don’t think they will in this case. If I had to guess, it’ll end when she finishes Harvard and goes back to Russia.

“As for the Swedish girls, Sofia is doing her best to come to Chicago to go to school. She wants to get her medical degree in the US, and that gives her a chance to be with me. Or maybe it’s the other way around and her chance to be with me is causing her to go to school here. Either way, most likely she’ll be here next fall. I certainly could see us being together, but the problem for her has always been an unwillingness to share, which I think means there’s not much chance there unless things with Jennifer fall apart.

“For Tina and Karin, they’re both younger, and Tina significantly so. In the end, the only way I see those working out would be if I were to move there, or, if I were to commit to them and have them move here. Tina has never made any demands on me of any kind, so I can’t really be sure what she’s thinking in that regard. Karin is the one I really feel badly about. She’s tried so hard and things just haven’t gone the way she wants them to. Mostly that’s my fault, but part of it is that it’s so tied up in Birgit that I wonder if we can ever escape that.”

Bethany paused only a moment before answering, “I think that’s a fair analysis. I guess that means I have some hard thinking to do. You’ve pretty much just told me what’s going to happen, at least so far as you can articulate it at this point. I have one important thing to say to you, though.”

I chuckled, “Don’t count on things going the way you think they will.”

Bethany laughed, “You’re learning. Something is going to go haywire. And with you? Probably several somethings. Just stay calm, cool, and collected, and deal with things as they arise.”

“With your help, I can do that!” I declared.

“Have you talked to Joyce?”

“No,” I sighed. “I just haven’t felt like it.”

“Damn it, Steve. Don’t let that fester. Call her tomorrow. Do you hear me?”

“Yes,” I said half-heartedly.

“I’m planning on coming down on the 9th. Is that still OK?”

“Yes, of course!” I replied. “I’m always happy to see you, Sweetheart.”

“Good. See you then, Steve!”

We said our goodbyes and hung up. I was about to turn on the computer when there was a knock at the door. I called out for whoever it was to come in and Elyse came into the room.

“We’ve hardly talked,” she said. “I miss that.”

“With all the people in the house and how busy I’ve been, I’ve neglected you. I’m very sorry about that.”

“I understand. I wondered if we could talk and if I could spend the night?”

“Sure. I don’t have any other offers!” I teased.

“Watch it, Buster or I’ll go to my room and get my strap-on!”

“Promises, promises!” I chuckled.

“Wait! You’re OK with that? You like it?”

“Elyse, if it makes you happy, and you want to do that, go ahead. You know me.”

“I do know you. And no, that’s not what I need. Come on, let’s get in bed and talk and make love,” she said, closing and locking the door.

I pulled off my t-shirt and slipped off my silk pajama bottoms and Elyse pulled off her shorts and t-shirt and we got into bed. She snuggled close and rested her head on my chest.

“How are things with Eduardo?” I asked.

“OK. He’s headed to Pennsylvania next year, and you know that he wants to go back to Spain. I don’t see this going anywhere in the long run. I like him a lot, though.”

“You guys can’t find a middle ground any more than Tatyana and I can, I guess. Our life goals are just too far apart for it to work out. Kind of like me and Stephie, too.”

“No way, Steve. She was willing to give up her life goals for you. The only thing that changed was Red, and I honestly think that he’s the only person who ever could have pulled her away from you. Even so, she’s torn up about the whole thing. It’s a serious dilemma for her.”

“And she’s going to decide on Red,” I said. “That’s pretty clear to me.”

“To me, too. But not to her. I think you’re right that in the end, she needs to be in Georgia or in the South somewhere. And she needs to be with Red. She’ll figure it out soon enough.”

“She’ll end up at Georgia Tech for her Master’s, so she’ll be moving out in two years, I’m sure.”

“So you’re really not going to be serious with anyone?”

“That’s right. After everything that happened, I’m not having anyone live with me, not making any commitments. You know that Jennifer and I have been working on things and we’ll keep doing that, but she’s never demanded that I be exclusive and even if we ended up together, she still wouldn’t. I’ll date, I’ll fool around, and just generally work on my issues with Bethany and Anala.”

“Speaking of fooling around...” Elyse grinned.

I pulled her to me and we kissed softly. I gently explored her body with my fingers, lips, and tongue, and when I slid into her she sighed, “I’ve missed this.”

Elyse was even more gentle and loving than she’d been the last time we were together. Her entire approach to sex had shifted from one extreme to the other, and yet, her orgasms where just as overwhelming as they were when we played with her toys, and mine were just as good.

“You know,” she said as we cuddled afterwards, “I still want to have kids with you when we graduate. No ring necessary. I just don’t find the whole marriage thing attractive, but I want to be a mom. I assume Jennifer won’t object?”

I chuckled, “No, she wouldn’t. How about we graduate first, you get your Master’s degree and then the three of us talk about it?”

Elyse actually purred as she snuggled as close as possible and we fell asleep together. In the morning after I ran we showered together and went down to breakfast.

I didn’t have class so I took my time eating and took the opportunity to talk to each of the girls, if only for a few minutes, to make sure that there weren’t any issues. So far, everyone was doing fine and the only minor issues was transportation, but Elyse offered her car to Katy or Julia to use and that neatly solved the issue because Elyse walked to school every day.

When I got to campus I went to the office and had my flyers stamped then put them up in the computer science building, in the student center and in The Bog. I didn’t bother with the dorms since I hadn’t received a single call from anyone who’d taken a number in the dorms. I also stopped by Doctor Bauer’s office and left some of the flyers with his secretary. Around 11:30 I drove over to Bridgeport for my lunch with Becky. I was early, but I wanted to have some time to think over what I was going to say to her. I forgot about the fact that Candace would be there, and that she’d want to flirt and talk.

“Hey! You’ve been scarce!” she said when I walked in.

“Travel, friends visiting, and school starting all sort of got in the way.”

“Last time was fun! Want to get together soon?”

“I’m actually working on reconciling with my girlfriend from High School. I need to focus on that.”

“Bummer. You were a LOT of fun! Well, let me know. I guess you didn’t mean Becky.”

“No, I didn’t. I’m going to tell her the same thing today, so you probably won’t see a lot of me in the future.”

“Well that totally sucks! But I get it.”

About fifteen minutes later Becky came in and sat down in the booth across from me. I could tell she wasn’t happy, but there was no doubt in my mind that she was still upset about me cancelling our date. We ordered our food and made small talk until it arrived. We started eating and I broached the topic that I knew was going to be a problem.

“Becky, Jennifer and I are trying to reconcile,” I said, taking a bite of my sandwich.

“Shit. She hates my guts, doesn’t she?” Becky asked, immediately coming to the correct conclusion.

“Something like that,” I said.

“Is that why you cancelled our date?” she said, her eyes turning watery.

A WellLived Life Book 5 StephanieChapter 5 Alliances and Conspiracies Part I

June 1981, Milford, Ohio “Stephanie!” I growled when she came out of her room for swimming. “What?” “Get in here! Now!” I said firmly. She walked into my room and I shut the door. “When did you call her, Squirt?” “Call who?” she said, trying, but failing, to act innocent. “Stephanie, what got Jennifer in trouble? What was my problem with Becky?” She visibly deflated, “Yesterday. But I had to! I had to! You were going to get engaged to Kara!” “I was NOT going to get engaged to...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 7 SakurakoChapter 12 House Calls

November 8, 1993, Chicago, Illinois A dark fog swirled before my eyes as I tried to take stock. My head hurt, badly. I felt something on my face and realized, dimly, it was an oxygen mask. My right hand was uncomfortable and I recognized the feeling of an IV and pulse-oximeter. My left arm ached fiercely. On my chest I felt the pads and wires of an EKG. I didn’t feel anything else wrong as I continued taking inventory. I tried to open my eyes, but the fog didn’t clear. I tried to speak, but...

A WellLived Life Book 10 The WifeChapter 19 Fallout

February, 1985, Chicago, Illinois As the Twin Beech took me back to Meigs Field, I thought about everything that Bethany and I had talked about, and about my conversations with Elyse and Alice, as well as what had happened with Katy. After we landed, I let Patrick know that I wouldn’t be making the flight for the next two weeks, and that Bethany would let him know what the plans were after that. “Her dad called me already. When she’s ready to come to Chicago. I’ll fly her up. Her dad will...

A WellLived Life Book 4 BethanyChapter 31 Fallout a Party and a Dance Part I

October/November, 1980, Milford, Ohio I didn’t know for sure what to expect when I walked into chemistry class on Wednesday. I had tossed and turned in bed and hadn’t slept well because I couldn’t get the situation with Kara out of my head. It was going to be a mess, no matter what happened. That was the only thing I was sure of. “Hi, Steve,” Kara said quietly. “Hi, Kara,” I answered, not looking her in the eye. “What’s wrong?” “I told you last night what was wrong and what would...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 32 Fallout

March 1978 I dreaded going to school. I thought about staying home sick. I rarely did that and if I told Mom and Dad I was sick, they wouldn’t doubt me. I had missed exactly one day of school in the past three years. Unfortunately, that would only postpone the inevitable. I didn’t have any classes with Jennifer, but we did have lunch together as we had all year. I could only wait to see what happened. I saw several of the gang in the hallway or class, but nobody said anything or even gave...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 7 SakurakoChapter 57 Land of the Rising Sun Part III

June 23, 1994, Oguni, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan My first week in Japan flew by, and a routine developed. Sakurako would wake me; I’d exercise and run, then shower and have breakfast, and share tea with Sakurako. After breakfast, I’d meditate, and then have my training session. After lunch, I’d work in the garden, or, as I had this day, wash the floors in the house. Hiroshi would accompany me back to the cottage and we’d talk while I washed up and dressed for dinner. After dinner, I’d spend...

A Bronze Bookmark Halloween

A Bronze Bookmark Halloween An "Odues' Oddities" Story by TGTrinity The wind was picking up, and Sam secured his scarf tightly around his neck. The city streets were empty, save for some stragglers who were drunkenly trying to find their way to another party. There was a commotion in the distance, and Sam figured it was some kids egging a house, a drunken brawl moving from a party into the neighborhood streets or a father chasing a guy out of his daughters bedroom. On Halloween...

A WellLived Life Book 9 AnalaChapter 64 Halloween Surprises Part I

October, 1984, Chicago, Illinois October flew by. Between school, work, programming for the unions, and time with my friends, days vanished like fog under a bright sun. Wen had continued getting one kiss each Saturday, but nothing more, and she’d gone home after studying. The twins, for all the teasing and banter, hadn’t done anything except serve lunch when I’d visited them on Sundays. Things with everyone else continued as they had. Anala had gone on a few dates with Prajesh, the guy who...

June 15, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “That’s everything, I think,” I said. “My luggage is in the trunk of the car, I have my passport, tickets, and money, both dollars and yen. I can’t think of anything else.” “I’ll see you in five weeks,” Elyse said, giving me a quick hug. “Did you see they rioted in Vancouver last night because they lost the Stanley Cup?” I chuckled, “Only Canadians would riot when they LOSE the Cup! I did see that on the front page of the Trib. Are we ready?” “Michelle and...

June 1981, Milford, Ohio On Monday morning, Stephanie and I swam and had breakfast together. Afterwards, we went out to the deck. “You don’t seem like yourself,” Stephanie said, her voice full of concern. “I’m not, Squirt,” I said. “Bethany knows you called Karin. She basically said that the Triumvirate is over because they can’t trust you. She also told me that I need to tell Kara. And she told me not to trust you.” “How did she find out? Did you tell her?” she accused. “No. She put two...

October, 1984, Chicago, Illinois Bethany was right - I did have some very surprising things happen in my life. And they never seemed to stop. On the other hand, Fate seemed to have taken a holiday and I was just fine with that. If she never came back, I’d be a very happy man. And given how things were going, I was pretty happy overall. I walked out the back door and down the brick path to the back door of the coach house. I knocked and Patience opened the door to let me in. As was usually...

A WellLived Life Book 2 JenniferChapter 53 Goodbyes Part II

June 1979 The second week of Summer school was much like the first — busy. I was doing homework and studying for tests every night. Three things of note happened that week. On Tuesday, Jennie Sanders called me. I told her what had happened with my mom and that my mom suspected us of having sex. I told her exactly what I had said to my mom and left it to her to decide what to say about her reasons. She was a bit upset, but said she could handle it. On Wednesday, Bethany stopped me in the...

“I can’t believe you’re going to wear that costume, Mallory.” It was time for our annual Halloween party and I couldn’t wait. We took turns buying the costumes and that year it was up to Mallory to decide what we were going to wear. After they had the huts finished, the water supply taken care of and even finding they had plenty of food with the coconuts and the bananas, the fishing was good and Mr. Candleford even managed to trap a wild pig in a pit trap that worked perfectly. The only hard part was to get the carcass out and get it prepared for eating and then to smoke and keep the remaining meat safe for future use. In a sense, it was good that they were there on the island because the things would have started to...

Hello "gurls"; Nadine here. I have noticed that some of you have actually read Allie's little introduction to what his life is currently like. The poor dear, his life is so hard now. I noticed he inferred many things in his little essay. Yes, of course I read what he wrote as he wrote it, since he is naturally no longer permitted un-supervised use of the computer. I allowed him to post it as is because I was curious to see what kind of reaction his tragic little story would engender. I...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 36 My Lifes Journey

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I woke up early on the First of July, because my body clock was still set to Swedish time. The flight back had been long but uneventful, and I was happy that the businessman in the seat next to me hadn’t wanted to talk. I read, wrote some longhand journal entries, ate, and generally relaxed while the plane zipped over the Atlantic. I’d come home, taken a sauna, eaten a light meal, and gone straight to bed, not bothering to check messages, look at the mail that...

June 1977 When I got home, I grabbed a Coke and some chips and went right to my room. I didn’t think I could deal with my parents or Jeff or Stephanie. I just needed to be by myself. That wouldn’t seem odd to anyone, because I often went to my room to read. In addition, I now had the TV I’d received for my birthday. I flipped it on to WXIX Channel 19 and reruns of Gilligan’s Island and Green Acres played in the background while I read. I had to get my mind clear for the final exams that...

May 26, 1991, Iron Mountain, Michigan “Shall we see if we can find a farm?” I asked at breakfast on Sunday morning. “That sounds like a great idea,” Jessica said. “There’s a visitor’s bureau in town,” Kara said. “I saw it when we were here the first time.” “I’m sorry I ruined that vacation,” Jessica said. “Ruined?” I protested. “Are you kidding? Getting you back was way more important than a few days of vacation!” “I agree,” Kara added. “Jess, you know exactly how bad off Steve was...

A WellLived Life Book 9 AnalaChapter 59 New Friends

August, 1984, Chicago, Illinois The rest of the week proceeded as expected - class on Wednesday, as well as the usual visit from Penny, work on Thursday, and class on Friday. Kara and I had lunch together at IIT, Sofia practiced her driving and parking, and I hung out with Mark Agnini after class for beers. Staci and I got into a couple of interesting debates about the Old Testament that Mark had to break up to allow others in the class to participate. She was very much of the ‘directly...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 8 NIKAChapter 2 Parallels

September 5, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “Interesting,” I said aloud as I was reading the Chicago Tribune while cuddling Birgit. “What, Daddy?” “My friend Bill Elliott is going to start his own racing team with McDonald’s as the sponsor.” “Sponsor?” “They pay money to paint the car red and yellow, and have the McDonalds sign on the hood.” “I like pink cars!” I chuckled, “I know you do, Pumpkin. Are your school friends coming today?” “Yes. Tiffany, Rachel, and Joey.” “Good. Shall we make...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 71 All Hallows Eve

October, 1983, Chicago, Illinois On Saturday, I was happy to see that Jorge showed up to study group and spent some time with Stephie on his calculus. She asked him to stay for the party, but he declined. I felt that him showing up for study group was a good sign and that over time we’d be able to ease him into the group. It was a matter of convincing him that we liked him and wanted him to be around because he was an interesting guy who we wanted to hang out with. I only spent about an...

A WellLived Life 3 Book 1 SuzanneChapter 7 Reaching the Peak

March 25, 2000, Chicago, Illinois “What time do I need to have you home?” “8:00pm will be fine,” Misty replied. “My parents are in Normal visiting my brother at Illinois State. They aren’t supposed to be home before 10:00pm.” Misty and I were in my car on the way to the NIKA apartment which, fortunately, was not being used. With our expansion, it was in more or less regular use, and that meant I didn’t have access to it as often as I would have liked. I was glad there had been a delay in...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 20 It Happened One Night

January 17, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “What time do you have to leave this morning?” Kara asked as we showered together on Tuesday morning. “About 8:30am,” I said. “I’m driving over to get Jeri, then heading to O’Hare. We have an 11:00am flight. Assuming all goes well, we’ll be in the office by 3:00pm Pacific time. We’ll spend a couple hours going over the software then go to dinner. The demo is tomorrow. Our flight back on Thursday leaves LA at 11:00am, so we’ll be home by 8:00pm, I...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 7 Setting the Course of My Life

June 1977 Friday ended up being a non-event. The more I thought about it, the more I was sure that there was no way on this earth I could say what happened between Birgit and me was a sin. Calling it a sin would debase it into a meaningless act. I could never do that. And the more I thought about Jennie McGrath, the more sure I was that I couldn’t call what she did for me a sin, either. If the church was right, I was going to hell. And frankly, there was no way that could be true. So I...

March 4, 1992, Chicago, Illinois “Thanks for calling back,” I said when Keri put Dante’s call through to my phone. “Is there a problem with the project?” he asked. “From a technical standpoint, everything is fine. I’ll be blunt, because that’s how we deal with each other. I need you to stop hitting on my female staff members. And I need you to stop right now.” “Who complained?” “Does it matter? It’s not the first time. I’ve heard it from more than one of my female staff members over the...

A WellLived Life 3 Book 1 SuzanneChapter 32 Still Together

July 22, 2000, Chicago, Illinois “Albert, do you have everything packed?” Mom asked. “Yes, Mom!” I replied, rolling my eyes because she’d asked before I went to bed. “He’ll be fine, Babe,” Dad said. “Let’s walk to the hospital.” I usually didn’t get up early, but Dad had suggested it would help Mom if I walked to the hospital with her because I was leaving to see Jane for three weeks. Mom, Dad, Aunt Kara and I left the house and headed down the sidewalk towards the hospital where Mom and...

KittyChapter 5 Sally McCall

It had not been my intention to see Janet and Berry off. I didn't think I could bear to see them leave. But as the hour of their departure approached, Ruth must have seen me keeping an eye on the clock. At first, I declined her offer to let me take a few minutes off. I argued that it was the middle of our rush hour. She whispered something to Ben, and he ordered me to get out of his kitchen, adding that he was concerned that in my present state of mind, I was an accident waiting to...

October 26, 1987, Chicago, Illinois The call I was expecting came just before 3:00pm on Monday afternoon. “You’re killing me!” Dante Puccini screamed into the phone. “Dante, could you please not scream into the phone,” I said, trying to sound as calm as I possibly could. “Hey, if somebody tried to stick it up your ass you’d scream!” I suppressed a chuckle. Elyse HAD done that, and a whole lot more, and I hadn’t screamed. “Dante, you asked us to solve a problem that every single vendor...

A WellLived Life 3 Book 1 SuzanneChapter 63 Not so Momentous After All

October 29, 2000, Chicago, Illinois Birgit followed me as far as the stairs, then scooted upstairs when I went to the front door and opened it. “Hi!” Sophie said. “Hi!” I replied and held the door open so she could come into the house. I closed the door behind her then led her to my study where I waited until she went in, and then walked in, closing the door behind me. I nodded to one of the wingback chairs, she sat down in one, and I sat down in the other. “Is something wrong?” she...

September 15, 1994, London, England All those life lessons I’d learned recently rushed to the forefront of my mind. What had happened with Ailea, Mitsuko, and Sakurako, as well as with Michelle, meant I needed to treat Pippa’s request properly. The only question in my mind was whether or not there were special circumstances which would warrant me trying to talk her out of it. I was concerned about regret, but I’d discussed that with the three Japanese girls, and in the end, I couldn’t...

May 14, 1997, Chicago, Illinois “Start talking!” Melanie demanded when I sat down in her office about an hour later. “There isn’t much to say. Katya found the information for me when I asked her to look into several things about Brandon Littleton, Kevin Lomax, and John Milton.” “Do you know more about him?” “A LOT more. I don’t think you want to know.” “Probably not, but I’m your criminal defense attorney, and even though San Antonio doesn’t have you involved in this, you know the CPD...

“So, how should we do these Stone’s songs?” Phil asked at our rehearsal session. “I think we all know the music, we just need to come up with a pretty awesome arrangement; we don’t want to sound like yet another cheap cover band.” “I had some ideas, if it’s okay for me to make some suggestions,” Allison said. “Of course it is,” Phil said. “Everyone can have a say, there’s no rule that says you can’t participate in the discussion.” “Thanks, Phil, I guess being the newest here, I’m a bit...

May 11, 1992, Chicago, Illinois Monday was turning out to be a LONG day. After my run and talk with Gina, and my talk with Elyse, I had a full day at the office scheduled. First was our leadership meeting in the morning, and then I had status meetings with each team. At lunch I’d gone to see Siobhán and explained that I was going to break off the sexual relationship, but that I wanted to remain friends. She was disappointed, but admitted that Thursday would have been the last time, since she...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 23 So Now You Turn Back Into Diana Prince

January 19, 1989, En-Route from LAX to ORD When the engines of the plane started, Jeri reached over and took my hand. She held it while we pushed away from the gate, and taxied for takeoff. Her grip tightened a bit as we hurtled down the runway, but nothing like the death grip she’d had on my arm for the flight out. The plane roared its way into the air and once we leveled out, Jeri’s grip loosened but she didn’t let go of my hand. “How are you doing?” I asked with a touch of...

September 1982, Chicago, Illinois The weekend was quiet and besides homework, I worked on the program changes for Frank, called Karin, Tatyana, and Kara, and hung out with my usual study group. Monday was refreshingly normal. On Tuesday morning, I handed Katy my completed intake form. She put it in an envelope and stuck it in her bag. She said she’d let me know soon about the interview. October 1982, Chicago, Illinois The drive back to Chicago was as uneventful as usual, and I arrived at the apartment just before 6:00pm. When I arrived, Elyse and Stephie were sitting on the couch and Jackie was sitting on the loveseat. Stephie hopped up as I opened the door and greeted me with a hug and a kiss. “Hi, Peaches!” I said. “Glad you’re home, Yankee!” “Hi, Steve,” Elyse and Jackie both said. “Hey,” I replied. “How was the weekend?” “Well, it was just Kurt with me, Stephie,...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 52 Lifestyle Choices

June 11, 1989, Chicago, Illinois It was just after 3:00am when I kissed Trish goodbye. She’d been an enthusiastic, energetic, and adventurous lover. We’d done just about anything either of us could think of, though her breasts weren’t large enough for a tit-fuck. The last time had been in the shower where we’d ostensibly gone to clean up afterwards, but instead I ended up taking her from behind as she leaned against the wall of the shower. “I think I’ll have you again, Steve Adams,” she...

October 2, 1987, Chicago, Illinois “Steve?” I heard Elyse call out, just as I finished reading the prayer. “‘Indian’ room,” I answered with a hitch in my voice. “Stephie?” she asked as soon as she saw me. “Yeah,” I nodded, sagging and collapsing into one of the basket chairs. She carefully sat in my lap, putting her arms around my neck. “Are you OK?” “At the moment, yes.” “When?” “Around 1:15pm our time, I guess.” “And the funeral?” “Wednesday. I don’t have a plan yet, but I think...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 38 Freshman Year Ends

May 1978 The first couple of weeks in May were busy with school, work, and friends. Except for Becky, I didn’t even have any dates. But I was OK with that. Well, almost OK. I wanted to see Anna, but it likely wasn’t going to happen until school was out. I had tutoring sessions with Melanie, but she still wouldn’t talk to me about anything other than Spanish. Barely a hello. I was grateful for the tutoring, but it was maddening seeing my friend this way. I hoped someday she could understand...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 44 Spring Break 1982 Part I

March, 1982, Milford, Ohio As I drove along I-65, I thought about what Stephanie had asked for and what Bethany had said without even knowing about the request. Of course, because Bethany and I were so in tune, she might have actually had an idea that I was struggling with getting involved with my sister again. I kept turning it over and over in my mind and I kept coming to the same conclusion — that I shouldn’t do it. I was torn between doing what Stephanie wanted and doing what Kara and...

You were messing with me, weren’t you?” She grabbed both my hands and smiled, “I was telling the truth, in my own way. October 1981, Chicago, Illinois I arrived back at the apartment just before 10:00pm and saw the address for the party. I decided I wasn’t particularly interested in going so I put on some music, poured myself a glass of wine, and started reading more about Russia. I was alternating between the history and culture book and the Communist Party book, decided on the history and culture book for this time. The waiter showed us to a quiet table along the wall of Roditys in Greektown. He took our drink orders and was back quickly. We placed our food orders right away and he left to put them in with the kitchen. “I’m not quite sure how to address this, so I’m just going to ask you bluntly. June 29, 1995, Chicago, Illinois On Thursday, I finally had lunch with Melissa again, something I hadn’t been looking forward to. Much like with Cèlia, Melissa and I had passed an inflection point and I was left with sub-optimal paths forward. I’d been struggling with the possible solutions, and all of them had pitfalls. When I walked into Takumi, I had something of a plan. Whether it was good or not would only be known once everything played out. “I spoke to my wives,” I said after we’d...

The Strawberry Patch Book 3 Life On The SavannahChapter 15 The Holiday Stories Halloween

Halloween is a silly holiday. People dress up in silly outfits and beg for candy. We live in a spread-out neighborhood that is part up-scale homes and part farm homes. Any trick or treating to be done had to be done using transportation. Several of our neighbors had a golf cart that they used to haul garden stuff around their property, they didn’t make golf carts big enough for the Herd, so we used the 16-passenger van we had decided to buy, and we drove the Herd from house to house in...

March 1980, Hovås/Göteborg, Sweden I woke early as usual, but just enjoyed being in bed with Katt. When she woke, she hopped out of bed and pulled a robe out of her closet and handed it to me. “There’s a spare toothbrush in the bathroom. Go have your shower, then we’ll have breakfast after I have my shower.” I quickly showered and brushed my teeth, and went back to Katt’s room. She went to shower and came back a few minutes later. She dressed, and I got a very good look at her sexy body...
