"That's good," answered Jaide, placing another kiss on the exposed earlobe.
The princess had been against the idea of lingering in the city when they had first arrived. She wanted to leave at once for the Hai Lei, arrows at the ready with the enemy in her sights. At first trying to refuse the offers of food and bath from their gracious hosts, she understood why the newly freed slave girls jumped at the chance to bathe, but had been baffled when Anna suggested they stay as well. She was certain that after the beautifully engineered escape, the dark-haired warrior would want to be the first to take up the battle cry.
"Honey," Anna had said, "we can't just go running into battle now."
"Why not?" Jaide had asked, "I thought that was the whole point of breaking out! To help my father!"
"It is, but..."
"But what? The army's closing in on them even as we speak! How can we..."
"Exactly. The army. Five thousand strong. How large an army does your father have?"
"Three thousand. They'll be horribly outnumbered. It'll be a slaughter. That's why we have to go..."
"No, that's why we have to stay."
The words replayed through Jaide's mind as she sat in the bath. It was infuriating how Anna could argue a point without ever raising her voice. She was so calm as she spoke that it was impossible to disagree.
"We need an army of our own if we're going to make any difference," Anna had continued.
"We have an army! What about the girls that just came with us this morning? That's two thousand, that makes us even..."
"Sweetie, they were slaves just hours ago."
"And now they're freed. And they'll follow you wherever you tell them."
"I know. But they don't know how to fight. They were just farmer's daughters before; they're the ones who'll be slaughtered."
Jaide had not wanted to listen, but she could not argue with Anna's logic. After all, what could an army of farm girls do against an army of well trained and fully armed men?
"What, then? What are we going to do?" Jaide had asked, eyes flashing.
"We ask the Hai Menadin for help."
"They won't... they can't..."
"I thought they were your allies."
"They are... well... trading partners, business... things like that. There hasn't been a military campaign since..."
"Well it's time now for a military campaign. That's what allies do when you're in trouble: they help."
"I don't know if we can convince lord Ramad to commit his army... and besides, it would take too long. We're under attack right now."
"I know. We don't need his army; we need our own army. That's why we're not going to talk to him."

It had gone back and forth for several hours that morning. Anna had been so sure of herself, her speech so calm, that Jaide had more and more trouble finding flaws in her argument. In the end, they agreed to stay. The princess had made arrangements to address the city that afternoon, and word had been sent to several neighboring cities as well. So with nothing else to do until then, the former slaves were treated to hot baths and as much food as they desired. Residents of the city made admirable accommodations, making room for two thousand extra bodies and filling two thousand extra stomachs.
In the interest of time and energy, many of the slave girls agreed to bathe in pairs, sharing the water and soap; Anna and Jaide found it natural to do the same, also sharing tender kisses and touches while they cleaned themselves. To the North, an army was on the move. Three thousand strong, they marched almost at a run, the blood-red dragon on their gray tunics rising and falling with each step. Captain Burke smiled grimly as his orders were executed. Half an hour earlier, the lead scouts had reported a village on the road ahead: the target for which Burke had been looking. Now the army had split and was coming into position around the village, smaller parties to converge from all sides with the main body entering from the South. For half an hour men had been dodging between trees, crawling on their bellies through tall grass, quickly and quietly moving to form the jaws of a hunter's trap. And now the trap was about to snap shut.
