I glanced up as the room quieted and looked at the doorway to see a slim man. He glanced around and walked through the desks towards my end of the room. I looked at the commander when he walked out but the man that had to be a marshal stopped in front of my desk, “My name is Gunder Smith from the marshal auditors office.”

I sat back and smiled, “How can I help you?”

He shifted slightly and I drew my weapon. He froze with a small weapon half out of his sleeve. He licked his lips, “I should have warned you.”

He slowly finished pulling the weapon and set it on my desk, “Have you seen one of these before?”

I put my weapon away and ignored Dragon as she leaped from her stand to my shoulder. I glanced at the weapon before looking at auditor Smith, “Yes.”

He nodded, “Would you make one?”

I smiled and pulled Dragon onto my lap, “No.”

He tilted his head, “Even if the emperor asked?”

I grinned, “If he asked ... in person I would consider it.”

He frowned and glanced around, “How many others know how to make one?”

I thought about it, “Maybe three.”

Smith sighed, “We need the names.”

I touched my comm and input an address and a moment later a small holo appeared. I smiled slightly, “I am sorry to disturb you commissioner Drake. I have a marshal auditor named Smith here with a cell disruptor. He has questioned me about making one for the emperor and wants the names of the others that have the knowledge to do it.”

The commissioner sighed, “Let the auditor know we already have the names. He is to turn over any and all information on the case he is working on to you. This is now your only case Morpheus, from his majesty’s mouth to your ears. You work it alone with the emperor’s seal.”

I looked at a surprised Smith as the commissioner’s holo vanished, “What type of case?”

His lips thinned, “We have suspicions that a marshal has gone bad.”

I ignored the murmuring in the room, “The file?”

He pulled a small data chip and set it on the table, “This is the only file.”

I nodded and continued to look at him, “Tell me what is not in it?”

He sighed and looked down for a minute before looking at me, “Do you know the Polic system?”

I smiled slightly, “Everyone knows the Polic system. It is one of the richest systems in the empire.”

He nodded, “First there was a minor discrepancy in the accounting department and then we believe several escaped prisoner names were deleted from the data net.”

I glanced around as a few of the marshals around us hissed. I leaned forward and picked up the data chip before grabbing my ready bag beside the desk. I shrugged at Amanda, “Destroy the weapon.”

She nodded and I started walking for the door. I did not bother stopping at dispersing and took a public vehicle to the starport. I used a public kosik and used my private account to purchase a ticket to Polic. I relaxed in the first class lounge and held Dragon as I thought about what I had to do. I pulled my comp and touched a button to isolate it before slipping the data chip into the slot.

I started reading and understood why Smith had the weapon. It was more then twelve hours before the liner heading out started boarding. I went up on the first shuttle and went straight to the jump room to wait. It was a long time before the crew and passengers began coming in. After we jumped I was up and walking out as others clung to their seats or were sick.

I left my bag in a nice suite and went to the first class lounge. It was a week before I transferred to the liner heading to Polic. I took the first shuttle down and walked through the crowed port. I used public transport to take me across the huge city. When the vehicle stopped in front of the marshals building I walked straight to the front doors and touched my badge to the door plate as I walked through.

I accessed the building secure data banks to find the location of all the marshals. I ignored the guards as they started for me and locked out all the marshal floors. I glanced at a guard, “No one leaves unless I authorize it.”

She swallowed, “Your name marshal?”

I started for the lifts, “Morpheus.”

I walked off the lift to the murmuring of twice as many marshals than I was used to and Dragon shifted and flexed her wings. The room quieted as they turned to look at me. I glanced around, “My name is Morpheus and this station is now quarantined. There will be no transmissions out and no one will leave.”

A marshal commander stepped out the door to his office, “That is my decision marshal.”

I glanced at him, “Not this time. Every marshal here or assigned here is now under my command. If you like I will have the emperor tell you personally.”

I looked around, “Before I leave one of you will be going to the death chamber.”

They looked at each other as I set my bag on a desk and walked to the commander, “I will start with you.”

He backed up and I followed him into his office. Dragon leaped and glided out to a desk outside the office as I gestured to a chair, “Sit.”

He just looked at me and I shifted before striking. He folded and dropped as I bent to lift his weapon and tilt his head, “I said sit.”

He glared as he tried to catch a breath and finally moved to the side and sat in a chair. I tossed his weapon onto the desk and walked around behind him, “One of the marshals here is bad. Not only have they allowed escaped prisoners to go free. They have stolen funds from dispersing.”

I pushed the tiny needle into his neck and walked back in front of him. I looked into his face, “One of you has also accessed my restricted and classified records and used some of the information to build a cell disruptor.”

He was frozen but his eyes flickered and I smiled, “Now I will ask one question and you will answer. Are you the bastard I want?”

He licked his lips and croaked, “No.”

I looked at him for a minute before reaching out to remove the needle, “It will take a few minutes to wear off.”

I waited until he shuddered and glared at me before shrugging, “You are a marshal. Now are you going to interfere or help?”

He continued to look at me, “How do you know it is...”

I waved my hand, “You know auditors better than me. The theft came from this building. The data net corruption deleting the prisoners names came from the marshals on this floor. My sealed file was access by one of the marshals assigned here.”

He looked towards the door and finally nodded, “What do you want me to do?”

I smiled, “Nothing. I will bring each marshal in here and ask my question.”

The commander frowned, “This is not standard and the court might...”

I waved, “When whoever it was accessed my file he accessed more than just my information. This is now a violation of imperial secrets.”

He blinked, “That is a...”

He nodded, “Whatever you need.”

I gestured to his desk and turned to walk back to the door. Dragon was by my bag and standing on her back legs as three marshals hesitated in passing her. My hands twisted and I flicked my wrist. The men screamed as they fell and I looked around, “You have a choice, cooperate or all of you will be confined and imprisoned.”

I walked to the men and knelt to pull the tiny darts out, “You were told not to leave.”

I pulled one up and pushed him towards the commander’s office. I turned as a marshal pulled a weapon and pointed it at me, “I think you are the one that will be going to prison.”

I smiled and turned to face him fully, “That makes this easier.”

Dragon was suddenly landing on his shoulder and biting. The marshal froze and I walked to him and took the weapon before touching a vial to his throat. He shifted and shuddered as his eyes flickered. I stuck a needle into his throat and waited as he tried to move. The other marshals in the room stirred as I patted his cheek, “Are you the back stabbing bastard I want?”

His eyes flicked and he croaked, “Yes.”

I smiled, “Who else is bad?”

He shivered, “No one.”

I nodded, “What did you do with the information you stole?”

He continued to shiver and shake, “Sold it.”

I sighed, “That is it, make it hard. Who did you sell it to?”

He began to shudder with strain, “Boss Crip.”

I ignored the marshals hiss of anger, “Who paid you to erase the prisoners names?”

His shudders were becoming trembling seizures, “Ser Jenkins.”

I reached out to pull the needle out and glanced at the closest marshal, “Strip him and put him in a cell. He is not to speak with anyone.”

I looked around as Dragon leaped and glided to my shoulder, “Now I want volunteers to bring Ser Jenkins in.”

The room shifted and stepped closer. I smiled and turned to the closest data interface. I unlocked the building and contacted the security. I turned and glanced around, “Why are you still here? We have an asshole that corrupted a marshal and paid to keep prisoners free.”

They all started for the lifts as the commander chuckled from his doorway. I glanced at him, “Where can I find Boss Crip?”

He pursed his lips, “We get updates for known criminals from the constables. I think the last on Boss Crip was in the underground but we do not have an imperial warrant for him.”

I touched the data interface, “Commissioner Drake.”

It was several moments before the star comm holograph appeared and I could see the emperor behind the commissioner, “Yes?”

I smiled, “I have the marshal. I sent the others to bring in the person that bought the prisoners freedom. We have another problem though, he sold the info to a person call Boss Crip. I will have a judge issue a warrant and go after him but the weapon information may have gotten out.”

Deputy Head Girl Lindsay takes control

Lindsay Pinkham was in a good mood that Thursday morning. Not only had she been praised for her commitment to the school’s sports teams in assembly that morning by the Head Mistress, Ms Hudson, but she was to be in charge of discipline today. The Head Girl, and Lindsay’s best friend, Joanne Wilson, was out of school on a visit to University and would be gone all day. That left eighteen year-old Lindsay in charge of disciplining any naughty pupils who got sent out of class. Lindsay smiled as...

Deputy Sheriff

I was the oldest son of the Sheriff of duke Marish. Very few systems followed the old or I should say ancient laws and systems. While the empire had dukes owning systems, there were still elected governors. That was the side that normally ran the legal system but not here. The system government still hired and supported constables but they were not the only law. The duke had a sworn man that was his Sheriff. The Sheriff had an under sheriff in each district or continent or earldom. Each...

Deputy PorterChapter 13

When I awoke the next morning, after a night spent alone, I thought about Gypsy on her way back to town and to the Warren County Jail. The chief deputy gave me till noon as comp time for calling me in to talk to Dee on my day off. I had a feeling that he expected me to be on hand, when Gypsy arrived. I would have been perfectly happy to be back out on the road, when she pulled into town. I was wrong in what I thought. "Your buddy Gypsy won't be back for a couple of more days. They are...

Deputy PorterChapter 2

"Why can't you be sociable," the belligerent drunk asked. "Just go away and leave me alone," the young woman replied. He put his hands on her, which was the step over the line as far as I was concerned. I walked up and showed him my badge. "You need to go on home. You can either leave here now and come back, or you can wait for the manager to ask you to leave in which case you won't be welcome again." I tried to be calm and reasonable. "Bullshit, I ain't going nowhere," he...

Deputy PorterChapter 4

Life fell into a boring routine quickly. It had been a bore since the first month and it stayed that way for eight months. It was out of the blue. when something really exciting happened. It was sad, but that didn't change the fact that it brought excitement to the Sheriff's department. Some hikers found a child's body wrapped in a tarp. Since she was wrapped in a tarp everyone jumped right to murder as a cause of death. It took the Medical Examiner three hours to rule that it was indeed...

Deputy MorpheusChapter 6 Prison Escape

I glanced up as the commander stepped into the room and everyone quieted. He looked at me, “Morpheus, take Swift, Taylor, Samson, Adams and Michaels. They had a prison escape on Devlin.” I nodded and stood, “How many?” He shook his head, “Nine.” I grabbed my bag and started towards the lifts. The other marshals followed me as I dropped to dispersing. We had a four hour wait in the starport before boarding a shuttle up to the cargo transport that was headed to Devlin. There were only a few...

The state cable news network called me at the motel but on my cell phone. It wasn't the man from the crash, it was a chick who claimed to be his producer. It looked to me as though they were trying to be a real news agency. "Hi there, you are Deputy Sylvia Porter?" she asked. "I am. Who might you be?" I asked. That's when I found out about the producer thing, "So what can I do for you Miss Producer." I didn't even bother to file her name into my short term memory. I didn't expect...

Deputy MarshalChapter 3

The Johnson/Goodall family had been in Sacramento for just over three weeks and they were already on their way to becoming "rich." Eddy had collected $56.25 in wages as a deputy marshal and their company had collected $300 for delivering heavy freight more quickly than the customer had expected. Eddy had already been contacted by potential customers for other jobs which they were now ready to handle. Over the next week, Jeb and Josh earned $53 for moving a load across town in two trips and...

Deputy PorterChapter 89

The state had pulled my certification. Without it I was unemployable, even as a game warden. That really hurt, not that I really wanted to back to being a rabbit police person. Even if I found a small town police force that wanted me, they could hire me without that certification. I could bring an action against the state but if the damage to my hand proved to be long term, I would lose. I doubted that any court anywhere would force them to do any more than make a monetary settlement with...

"I looked, but I couldn't find the interview with her lawyer anywhere," I admitted. "She says we offered to forget her attempted escape, if she had sex with us." Simpson said. "It's not believable that we conspired to have sex with her," I said. "I wouldn't worry about it. I'm going to tell the truth which should remove any suspicion of criminal activity. I hadn't planned to mention the escape attempt at all, but appears I'm going to have to do it." "Yeah, I agree. Just try...

The room was warm and it really felt good. I had been standing out in the cold wearing just my running suit and the light parka for well over two hours. I made short work of stripping off the running suit and hanging it on racks to dry. After that little domestic chore, it was on to the hot shower. I also washed my new peach fuzz of course. I was dressed in a clean uniform and in the office well before nine. I didn't think that was too bad, since I had been waylaid for quite some time. "So...

The well dressed business man walked into Hardee's just as I sat down to review my tape from the night before. More importantly to me was the last three hours. I was occupied so even though I noticed him walk in the place, I didn't keep track of him. When he sat down at the table I paid a lot more attention to him. "So are you Randal Davis king maker or one of his flunkies?" I asked. "You know, if I wasn't Randal you really would have pissed me off with the flunky comment," he...

My last night on swing shift was a bust. Even so I slept till noon the next day. When I awoke I took a shower, then dressed in my jeans and one of my forest green tee shirt. I looked up as the commander walked out of his office. It was late Sunday evening and I had used the time that day to get over my various pains. It had been an interesting experience and now I that I had rested, I was a little less terrified. I was however still very concerned. I knew that I would have just to wait to see. The waiting would be hard but at least it wouldn't be forever. The shelf life of an amateur sex video was very short. Spring had come to the mountain, and it was glorious. I have survived the last two months without being involved in any of Mary Ellen's projects. I did pay off the Monk for saving my life, otherwise I had been celibate. How did I do it you asked. Intriguing Marshall

“The Marshall will take me?” I said. I wasn’t sure about that. He was a tall and grizzly looking man who stood nearby us. I questioned whether or not I wanted him of all people to ride along with me back to my home town. The other man said he would ride along you with me. I wasn’t sure about that either but I knew it would be a “long” and treacherous ride if I didn’t take precautions. I looked at the Marshall. He did look brazen to say the least but I had heard without that heavy and ugly beard...

When I paid my bill I got up and got on the elevator to go up to my room. Just before the doors closed a hand shot through the gap to hold the lift. The man from the bar quietly boarded and gave me a polite nod of greeting. He reached for the panel but saw that I'd already pressed the button for his floor. "Fourteen?" he asked in a calm tone. I nodded and waited for the box to jolt to life. We got to our floor without any other stops and we both stepped out and headed in the same...

Deputy Done Wrong

From my vantage point behind the low line of brush I watched the approaching vehicle. It was moving along pretty good and I flipped the switch on the remote in my lap, activating the radar gun mounted on my dash. It was a high tech unit, one of the latest on the market, and it automatically recorded the highest speed of the oncoming car. Good thing too, as the driver obviously was in possession of a "fuzz buster" since the nose of the car came down as the driver hit the brakes hard. I...

Even without the splint, the flimsy donut box would have been a difficult item for me to carry. With the splint, I had to use it as a resting place and hold the box in place with my good hand. Yes it sounds painful because it was. Still it would be short lived as I parked right outside the door to the courthouse basement. That basement was used by the Sheriff's office. Yeah I felt like a dumb ass while I waited the hours in a cold house for the emergency delivery of propane. It didn't get warm but if I sat right in front of it, I didn't freeze either. The delivery man came after lunch, but that was okay. I couldn't be pissed at him for my stupidity. By the time I got to my room it was 5AM. Some of the state highway workers, who stayed at the Motel, had already begun to stir. If I had gotten into my room an hour earlier, I would have likely just fallen into bed and passed out. I looked up from the stack of reports I was going through and marshal Edwards grinned. He was a short stocky man with grey hair and a wicked sense of humor. Eddy had one point on his side: the first time he fired his shotgun, people would come running. He just had to hope that they would get there soon enough to do him some good. It was late and I still had several reports to review and four requests to decide on. I glanced at the door when a dragon flew in and landed on a chair back. Deputy PorterChapter 35

I went home and worried. I had no way to tell who knew what, so all I could do was act like everything was normal. If I were a Los Vegas Odds maker, I would make it about 3 to 1 in my favor. I wasn't trying to be optimistic there were just so many thing that had to go wrong to get me busted. I had the Boyle brother's phone number and I could call, but I swore I would never contact them again. So I would have to wait till tomorrow at work, when I could pin those in the raid down. My chance...

Deputy MarshalChapter 8

Deputy Marshal Zack Wilson walked into The Silver Dollar Saloon the same way he did every night if was his turn to make the nightly rounds. He went up to the bar and said hello to Jim Hanson the bartender and owner. "How's it going tonight, Jim?" "Oh, 'bout the same as usual. There's a few miners here I ain't never seen afore, but they've been mostly quiet and drinking their beer. OH, SHIT! LOOK OUT, ZACK!" Jim grabbed Zack's arm and jerked him to one side as a thrown knife whizzed...

Deputy PorterChapter 102

Rodney and I settled in to wait for the boss, or at least the rental boss. I had time to assess Rodney in full daylight. He walked with just a slight almost unnoticeable limp. He was not quite six foot tall and probably one hundred and eighty pounds. He was the color of coffee with just a touch of cream. There was some white in his gene pool for sure. His hair was too short to be in the least curly. As I think I said earlier he looked like he might have been a gym rat. Joan Pacer arrived...

Deputy PorterChapter 150

"Look Sylvie, we have to make this look convincing. We want whoever is bugging you to think I'm an old boyfriend," He said it quietly over his beer. "Exactly how far to you think I am going to carry this charade?" I asked. "That depends on how bad you want to know who is bugging you. Believe me I don't want to be here. I have better things to do with my time, don't I?" he said. "Look that cockney accent is going to wear thin in about an hour. I have heard you speak with hardly...

Deputy PorterChapter 171

I rode the bike on Friday for two hours. As I had begun to do lately, I went to the Cafe on the Square for breakfast. There was usually a deputy or two there, and since Mary Ellen was a local business women, she was a topic of conversation around there. Even if there were no cops, there was always some news that someone had gotten from a cop. The latest thing was the cops thought they might have a good lead. I thought, if the lead is the camera men, it was about fucking time. I said nothing....

Deputy PorterChapter 201

"I swear to you Sylvia I don't understand why people are buying that stuff. I don't like the taste of it and I don't like the quick high I get from it." The Brit said. "I know, hun but people don't always make sense. As a matter of fact the one thing you can count on when dealing with people, is that they will all act irrationally at some point." I said. "Yeah, that is true enough. So what's the thrill?" The Brit asked. "Jim says it's designer drugs. Something nobody else has....

Deputy PorterChapter 224

Jeremy was working on the catered meal. "We were calling it a counter rally. A political rally with barbecue and no politics. It was a hell of an idea, even if it was mine. While he did that I went back to thinking about a new car of some kind. The cruiser really was breaking down a bunch, and that meant a tow bill just about every time. Fortunately the breakdown had been during daylight and in area's with cell phone coverage. I was worried that it might not always be so cooperative. I...

Deputy PorterChapter 231

When I woke up, it was the next morning and Juanita the pubs only female employee was standing beside me. "Miss Sylvia is there anything I can get for you." "To be honest I could use some pain killers, and a cup of coffee," I said. "What kind of pain killers?" she asked. Get me some Tylenol extra strength and some Aleve,"I said. "Mostly honey, I really want coffee." "I will bring that and send Jeremy for the drugs," she said. She was back with the coffee and the Tylenol almost...

Deputy PorterChapter 6

"Why on earth would I do that?" I asked. "Because, they tell me I'm good company for one thing. For another you have to eat anyway, and I would pay," he said. "Of course you would pay, that goes without saying, but I think I will pass. You can try again some other time. Right now I have too much on my mind." I said. "Come on, I did some checking. You don't have a boy friend and you live in a motel. You can surely make time for one dinner with a new friend," he demanded. "Maybe...

Deputy PorterChapter 11

I arrived back at the motel, two hundred miles from my home town at four in the morning. I was exhausted, but more concerned with my mom's feeling than anything else. It wasn't the first time in my life that I was awake at 4AM. Since there was nothing I could do to help mom at 4AM, I fell into bed and at least tried to sleep. The ringing of the room phone woke me. My cell phone couldn't ring because it was turned off. I had even taken the battery out, so that I wouldn't be disturbed at...

Deputy PorterChapter 12

"So go home and get some sleep. You look like hell," Webster staid. "Gee thanks, I needed to hear that. However after five hours sleep, it isn't unexpected," I said. "Then don't stand here searching for compliments, go home and sleep. You have tonight off anyway, so when I see you tomorrow at noon for your 7AM shift, I expect you to look your normal gorgeous self," Webster added. "I'm only gorgeous because you are comparing me to the likes of Simpson," I said with a smile. "I...

Deputy PorterChapter 15

From the DA's office we went to the local Rainbow Steakhouse. Simpson convinced me to carry a couple of burgers and fries to the jail. We delivered the approved paperwork, which we hand carried through the building to the office of the head jailer. While the staff made their checks and balances, I ate a McDouble and fries. That and a canned coke from the machine in the hallway was lunch for both of us. It wasn't my favorite meal, but I also didn't feel that I had been punished. I sat...

Deputy PorterChapter 22

I was right, there was no one as cool as Lieutenant Bullet in the Motel lounge that Saturday night. I really might not have been in any shape for a new man anyway. I sat gingerly and tried not to squirm in my seat. In other words my rectum was a wreck. I went to bed after my lounge walk through, even though I had only been awake a few hours. Again I slept like I had been drugged. Hell who knows with that crowd, I might have been drugged. Sunday morning when I woke up it was all better. My...

Deputy MorpheusChapter 9 Escorting a Ghost

Amanda and her companion Cynthia were out hunting a fugitive and I was stuck doing paperwork. In fact I was the only one still here. I glanced at the comm when the holo of commissioner Drake appeared and sat back, “Sir.” He looked tired, “I was told you are the only marshal left. I need you to do an escort. She is already there but needs an escort for her next stop.” I nodded, “Name?” He snorted, “Good question. She is not in any system but works for us in ... private. Escort her to Hades...

Deputy PorterChapter 24

I drove the Toyota to the grocery store just a few blocks away. I might have walked but I wanted to buy a few things. With the microwave oven and a little planning I could cook almost a full meal. Of course that was not my plan. I found that I could store about three frozen meals in my apartment sized freezer unit. Since the motel had an ice machine just outside my door, I could use all the freezer space for frozen dinners. That ice machine as well as the lounge walk through was why I got...

Deputy MorpheusChapter 16 Pirates

I glanced at the door when Simon stopped in it. He smiled and leaned against the frame, “I have a mission for you.” I sat back and pushed the data films away as I reached for my ready bag, “Tell me it is off world.” He laughed and nodded his head, “A prisoner transfer to Graham.” I stood as Dragon leaped from her perch and flew towards me, “Let Amanda know I went out?” He chuckled, “She is down in dispersing getting your vouchers.” I stopped when I reached him and sighed, “Simon...” He...

Deputy PorterChapter 28

"I'll be your snitch if you be my bitch," Monk said once he got me to a table away from everyone else. "You have to be out of your mind," I said. "First of all I don't know you, and second it's against every rule and standard of conduct. So no way." "Well at least think about it and I'll give you something as a show of good faith. You want to know if Gypsy was selling her ass, well she wasn't." Monk said. "I still think she was. You might not have known it, but I am pretty...

Deputy PorterChapter 36

I slept pretty good all in all. I attributed it to exhaustion as much as anything. 5AM came early on the last day of my day shift. I still had to force myself to run, even thought it was just a few degrees warmer, which make me feel a little better. Spring was on the way, thank god. It could not get here soon enough for me. It had been a dismal winter. I didn't stop in the cafe again that morning. It was time to give some though to breakfast again. I had already started to lose the weight I...

I had no idea what they really thought of all the increased work I caused them. I know the district attorney, who was responsible for our cases. called me in before she arraigned the pot case of mine. The one with the survivalist and the grower from down east... "Well Deputy Porter, we are going to trial with a pretty good case. The girl tuned on everyone in the county it seems," she said. "Actually most of the buyers were outside the country. There are only two county residents," I...

Deputy PorterChapter 45

On the way home Angel stopped at the drug store for a prescription of Vicodin. I was expecting significant pain for a while longer. That expectation was based on the doctors warnings. "Take it easy and don't go back to work before you are releases, You are going to have some pain for a while." I was already having some pain when I moved, If it got worse without the hospitals big time drugs, I was going to be in a fix. I had Angel make one more stop on the way home. She went through the...
