Shortly after the Feast of the Epiphany, which is on the 6th of January, a Tuesday in this year of 1801, Clare, Saoirse, and Eileen became very agitated. On the evening of Friday, the 9th of January, it all came to a head when Clare had a question for me after we were in bed, but before we had sex.

"Mark, when will we be married? We, Saoirse, Eileen and I, were aware that we couldn't be married during Advent, but Christmas and Epiphany have passed now, and we all wish to be married, and we want a proper church wedding. You promised!" she reminded me in a shaking voice.

"Yes, we will be married, but I am not sure about a 'Proper Church Wedding' as you put it," I told her. "There aren't that many churches here in Lexington. At least not churches as I have known them," I continued.

"There is a Catholic chapel here, but I don't know when the priest will be here!" she told me starting to become frantic.

We hadn't visited any of the few churches here for Christmas. Instead we held a service in the large parlor at Hickory Hill. Mrs. O'Flannagain had brought her Bible. Many of the other women had been jealous but grateful as none of them had one. Various passages were read from it, and our Sisters and Cousins had sung hymns during the service. Everyone attending seemed to have enjoyed the service.

There had been more singing following the service by our female relatives with Ken and Kell joining in. There were a number of tunes in Gaelic plus some in our American English including a number of Christmas carols. Several of the men recruited from Fort Jefferson had also sung a few Christmas tunes in Old English. At the time, we were unaware of there being a Catholic church in Lexington.

"We will visit the chapel tomorrow if you wish and try to determine when the priest will be there. I wasn't aware that there was a chapel here," I finished.

"Yes, one of the cooks, Miss Rose, told us," Clare informed me. We slept very well later that night.

Saturday morning after checking on operations at Mount Sterling, Wolf and I accompanied by Saoirse and Clare transferred to Hickory Hill. Carl and Eileen soon joined us there. We borrowed horses from the stable, and set out for the Catholic chapel there after checking with Sererena.

The chapel it turned out was located on the west end of Main Street at the present outskirts of the city. It was a fairly large log building. When the six of us arrived and were looking around, an older lady emerged from a small house behind the chapel.

"Can I help you?" she inquired as she neared us. Clare led the other women over to speak to her.

"Do you know when the priest will be here again? We all wish to be married, but don't know when he will be here," Clare told the woman.

"I'm Mrs. McCarthy. I take care of the Mission house when Father Badin and the other priests are absent. There are four of them now, but they are all gone presently. I don't know how they do it. They are always traveling and seem to live in the saddle. The mission here in Kentucky covers such a vast area. They seldom have time to rest, and it can't be good for their health," she told the girls before getting back to the situation at hand.

"Father Badin is scheduled to be here on Sunday, the 18th, to celebrate Mass. Do you live in Lexington?" she asked looking over at the three of us males in our uniforms.

"Our Headquarters is at Hickory Hill, ma'am," I told her. "We are often away from there on patrol. I'm Major Mark O'Connell, Commander of O'Connell's Border Rangers, and these other gentlemen are my Brother Wolfgang O'Connell and my Cousin Carl O'Connell," I told her to introduce myself and the others.

"And you ladies are?" Mrs. McCarthy asked.

"I'm Clare O'Hara, and this is my Cousin Saoirse Ward, and our friend Eileen O'Keefe," Clare told her.

"Are all of you sixteen?" Mrs. McCarthy asked looking at them critically.

"Yes, we are all sixteen," Clare told her, and I could feel the spell that she used to convince Mrs. McCarthy.

"Are all of you Catholic?" Mrs. McCarthy asked next, but I was prepared for that.

"We are all Christians," I told her, but the spell that I had cast made it sound like 'Catholics' to her. Mrs. McCarthy smiled at us after hearing that.

"Be here on the afternoon of Saturday the 17th. Father should be here by then, and you can all speak to him. Because of the area that the mission covers, and the constant traveling, plus the many small congregations, the announcement of the banns will only be made on Sunday the 18th before you are married. Will any of your parents or siblings be attending," Mrs. McCarthy asked.

"My Parents were killed in an Indian raid a number of years ago," Eileen told her, near tears. "My two Brothers will be here though," she finished as Carl moved over to comfort her.

"My Parents were also killed years ago, but by the British," Clare told her in a determined voice, not willing to allow the woman to see her grief.

"My Parents live in Olive Hill some distance from here and won't be attending," Saoirse told her.

"What about you gentlemen?" Mrs. McCarthy asked.

"Our Parents live back east in the colonies," I told her.

"And the three of you came out to Kentucky to join the Army?" she asked questioningly.

"Actually there are quite a few more of us O'Connells here, but we are the only ones getting married presently. Some of our relatives will attend the wedding," I said receiving a sharp look from Mrs. McCarthy.

"Are any of you ladies in a family way?" she asked next in distaste. All of the women turned a bright shade of pink in embarrassment.

"No!" Clare told her immediately. "We are not pregnant!"

"That's good," Mrs. McCarthy said after exhaling. "Marriage is a sacrament and fornication is a sin," she told us in a very self-righteous voice.

"Father will be glad to learn that none of you are with child," she added after a few seconds. I believed that instead she was the one relieved to know that.

"You can join us here on any Sunday. Even when none of the priests are here, we gather to pray and sing a few hymns," Mrs. McCarthy told us.

"Your Sisters should come and sing for them," Clare told me immediately on hearing that.

"They can sing after the wedding," I told her and smiled.

We returned to Hickory Hill after that to return the borrowed horses that we had used before transferring back to our operational sites. We stopped for a short visit to inform our relatives there about the forthcoming triple wedding on the 18th. All of our Sisters, Cousins, and their live-in-lovers were excited by the prospect of a wedding.

The following day, Sunday the 11th, Ken, Kell and their Wives came to see me at Mount Sterling. Sunshine and Rose went to look at the garden area behind the fort with D & C. Ken, Kell, Airmid, and Almha came to my office. They had issues to discuss.

"We need more information on the port cities and where the British are storing their supplies," Ken told me once they were all seated.

"We don't have any information on that, and I don't believe that General Clark will either. It isn't the kind of information that he would need for his operations," I told Ken and the others.

"General Greene at Fort Jefferson, the Army Headquarters, promised help when we were ready to start operations against the British. His operations or intelligence people should have some information that would help you, but I'm not sure how much they will have," I finished.

"When can we check on that?" Kell asked.

"Tomorrow! I'm pretty sure that they don't work on weekends," I told him remembering when I had gone to Fort Henry to report on a weekend.

"I'll come to Hickory Hill in the morning when Clare and Saoirse come for their Magic studies, and we can leave from there while they are busy," I told them.

"All of the new members of the family seem to be progressing rather quickly with their studies," Kell observed. "Nearly as quickly as my Wives did."

"Yes, they all seem to be. We need to destroy those British supplies before they can be sent out to the various border forts and used against us this summer," I told him.

"Why destroy them?" Airmid asked in a questioning voice.

"So the British can't use them!" I told her.

"They can easily be kept from using them without destroying them by using Defensive Shells. Then the Americans can use what they wish and possibly sell what they don't need," she said with a smile.

"That's not even considering what large fires could do to those cities on the east coast," Kell reminded me.

"We wouldn't be terribly popular with their citizens if we burned their cities down," Ken added. I had never thought about what repercussions large fires would have if they got out of control which was very likely given the state of fire protection in the present Reality.

"You're correct!" I admitted. "Defensive Shells will easily keep the British from using the supplies and will also frustrate them when they are unable to get through them and can only watch them sitting there in the warehouses."

The next morning, I came through the Portal with Clare, Saoirse, Duncan, and Connor who were all headed to their Magic studies. Ken, Kell, and his Wives were ready to leave and I transferred us to Fort Jefferson after giving Clare a little kiss.

We went to General Greene's Headquarters after my relatives had a little look around. My Brother, Cousin, and his Wives were quite surprised to see how settled and civilized Fort Jefferson and Washington City appeared to be.

I didn't want to bother General Greene at this time. Instead we went to check with his S-2 and S-3. The Officers there just barely remembered me, and were confused when I asked about the British supply depots on the east coast. The S-3 (Plans and Operations) people claimed to have no information on them. The S-2 (Intelligence) people looked at us warily, and weren't ready to admit knowing anything. It wasn't until Colonel Harrower happened by that we got any help.

"Well, Major O'Connell! We haven't seen you in some time. What can we do for you?" he asked in a friendly voice.

"Sir, we are starting to plan our operations against the British. We need to know where their depots and storage areas are in the Atlantic seaports," I told him.

"General Greene did mention to me last summer that you were planning to do something there, but he wasn't very specific," the Colonel told us.

"We had a general idea of what we wanted to do then, but we have started to do the actual planning and need more information. No one here seems to have that information," I told him. The Chief of the S-2 section had joined us when he saw that the Chief-of-Staff had arrived, and the Colonel took him aside to speak to him for a few minutes before departing.

"If you will come with me, I'll show you what we have on that," the Lieutenant Colonel told us after the Chief-of-Staff had left. He took us to the very back of his section and opened a very solid looking locked box there. He spread out the papers from the box on the table.

"This information was very difficult to obtain, and is not to be released," he told us. "You can look at it, but I can't allow any of it to leave here," he added. He obviously didn't realize that he was dealing with Wizards. Besides having excellent memories, Kell quickly called paper and pen to him, and made notes in the Ogham writing system on pertinent points.

Magic InkChapter 28

That evening we discussed with the Stuarts whether they would be interested in working for us full time. They were, but had some issues. "We have a house near Akron that we would need to sell. We also have jobs that we will need to leave, plus bank accounts and other financial matters to take care of," Will Stuart told us. ""If you would rather still live in Akron, I could install a portal in your house there, so you could travel back and forth to work here," I told them. "No," Myra...

Back in the O’Connell Realm, things were abuzz also. Jillian had taken Culann to see Great Grandfather Mark’s Blacksmith shop with its many kinds of modern equipment, and he had been shown Fragrach. He, Connor, and Duncan were also shown the tractors and other farm equipment. Wolf, Carl, and James had been working on the fields and had allowed them to ride on the tractors with them. Our Mage Sisters and Ken’s Wives had all been out in the fields also checking them. Chandra and the O’Keefes...

We returned to Hickory Hill much earlier today than we had yesterday, and took care of our horses ourselves, but allowed the stablemen to take care of the pack horse. After cleaning up, we went to look for Mark and Seamus. Sererena and Gwyn were already here. We finally got everyone together in the den. “What’s so important?” Seamus asked. “There are things that we need to discuss,” I told them. “It couldn’t wait until after dinner?” Gwyn asked. “No, we’re going to need to make an...

On arriving at Hickory Hill that evening for dinner, there were a number of surprises, and there was considerable excitement when we appeared in the large parlor. "These are the O'Keefes," I announced before introducing each member of the family. Everyone was amazed that we had found an entire family with very strong Talents. "Yes, and they are already taken!" In a short time, we had closed to about three hundred yards from the lead ship of the fleet when Ken, Kell, and Kell's Wives sent blasts of Magic Power into the ship that Admiral Ball had identified as Queen Charlotte -- a one hundred gun, first rate ship of the line. Her masts and rigging began to topple almost immediately and crashed down onto the main deck and over the side of the ship creating havoc and many casualties. At the same time, Sunshine and Rose, Ken's Wives, called red hot...

Annie and Sara arrived at the printing plant just after 12:30. Sean and I were just finishing cleaning up the presses, and only needed to use a quick spell to clean ourselves up and be presentable. Annie and Sara were wearing jeans like Sean and I were, but had on heavy blouses and jackets rather than the "Magic Ink" T-shirts that Sean and I were wearing with our sneakers. They had also brought jackets for us. "It's a lot colder in Denver than it is here," Sara told us, as they handed...

We didn't get to see Grandfather Michael until well after noontime. We joined him in his private parlor when summoned. "Good afternoon, Grandfather," we both said in greeting after being told to enter. "Well, what do you think of us after spending your first night here, and scaring the staff half to death?" he asked with a grin. "The scaring part wasn't intentional," I told him. Our Sisters and female Cousins insisted on changing clothes before dinner, and the rest of us waited for them. None of us had a chance to bathe yet, but we had all washed up in our rooms. The Officers' Mess was located on the far side of General Clark's Headquarters in a separate building. During our walk there, I again paid attention to the construction of the various buildings that we passed. I had been doing that since we had arrived here, and had drawn several conclusions. Saint Patrick's Day, the 17th of March, fell on a Wednesday this year, 2032. The meeting that evening was held outside the main house at Hickory Hill for two reasons. First, everyone was invited, and that included all of those that worked for us and not just us O'Connells. There wasn't a large enough room in the house for that many people. Secondly, it was a very nice warm evening, and it would be more pleasant outside. Magic Ink V The Third RealityChapter 24

The three of us appeared in the evening shadows near the Officers' Mess at Fort Jefferson, and proceeded inside where we secured a table and ordered some ale while we waited for Captain Moore to appear. That gentleman arrived fifteen minutes or so later. He had on a clean and correct uniform and spotted us soon after entering. "Good evening, Major O'Connell and also both of you lovely ladies," he said with a large smile. "Have a seat and join us!" I requested. "My pleasure, sir,"...

Magic Ink V The Third RealityChapter 45

It turned out that we needed to wait quite some time for our Wives. We soon grew tired of waiting, and I went to check on the shells to be sure that all of the guards were gone, the fires were out, and everything was taken care of. The last thing that I did was to cancel the openings in the tops of the shells as there would be no one here to start fires or breathe the air. When I returned, Wolf went to check on things also. Our Wives eventually returned, but they were very upset. “These...

Magic Ink V The Third RealityChapter 46

“We will allow you time to consider your decision,” I told them before we all transferred back to Hickory Hill. After a fine dinner there, we all returned to our separate rooms for a good night’s sleep. I was sure that the Generals in Philadelphia were having a much less comfortable night and no sex. On Monday morning the 16th of March, I again went to Fort Jefferson to see General Greene, and to update him on the most recent developments. Ken and Kell went with me. We had no trouble getting...

Magic Ink V The Third RealityChapter 37

We found our Relatives at the far end of the field with a large pink Defensive Shell set up for our horses to remain in while we attended church. They had all been unsaddled. The field, which had been empty when we arrived, was now crowded with wagons and horses. There were easily well over two hundred people here now besides us O'Connells, and the chapel would be overcrowded with fifty people in it. Something would need to be done. It soon became evident that something was being done....

Magic Ink V The Third RealityChapter 36

We all transferred to Lexington after that. Our Sisters all knew where to go as there was only one real jewelry store in town, and all of our female relatives had been there multiple times. The manager was a French gentleman and smiled as we all entered. The store only had a limited selection of engagement and wedding rings. The engagement rings were mostly wide rings that were engraved but had no gems set in them and certainly no diamonds. They were, however, made of 20 carat gold. The...

Magic Ink V The Third RealityChapter 21

It was nearly ten minutes before the Lieutenant commanding the garrison here appeared, and even then he was only partially dressed and was unshaven. He was still drunk and stumbled as he entered. He looked at us through bleary eyes for a number of seconds before attempting to salute, which wasn't done well either. "You are drunk on duty and also present a very poor appearance, Lieutenant," I growled. "Additionally you set a very poor example for your men," Seamus added. The Lieutenant...

Magic Ink II the ChildrenChapter 20

Everyone was still excited about the upcoming move to the O'Connell Realm on Tuesday, the 18th of October, when they resumed work at the printing plant. The excitement was soon replaced by shock. On Wednesday morning, the 19th, just before 8:30, as everyone was just getting to work, Uncle Will noticed a black Humvee and several black Suburbans pull up across the street from the plant. The hair on the back of his neck stood up in premonition, and he instantly reacted by reciting the spell...

Magic Ink II the ChildrenChapter 15

Over the next few days, Dad got with Uncle Will and Thomas Stuart to determine how much paper, plates, ink, and other supplies that we used in a year. They went over the business records and then projected future increases based on the increases over the last two years. They were quite surprised at the amount of materials required. "You say that we have maybe a year or so?" Uncle Will asked. "Yes, that's our daughters' estimate," Dad answered. "We can double our regular orders and...

Magic Ink IV Ken and KellChapter 31

The meal that evening was much more festive than our afternoon snack had been. Everyone wore their best clothes, and there was even music at the meal, which consisted of seven courses and finished with wine and ale. The twins did try some of the ale which was very good, but only a little, and none of the wine. They had learned their lesson. That night the Sisters wanted sex, which was all right with me. Both of them wanted the long, slow, and passionate variety, but separately and with a...

The two Mage Cousins then sat down on either side of Gerald Ward, and reaching through the freeze spell took his hands and started a mantra. I could feel their Green Magic at work, but couldn't tell what they were doing. They had been working on him for several minutes, when both Cousins looked up in shocked surprise. "His condition is much different than we at first thought," Coleen told us after several seconds. "Yes, we have detected a virus in his brain that was causing him to act...

Magic Ink V The Third RealityChapter 18

I reappeared near another large warehouse. On the side of the building, a large Sergeant was busy kicking a younger man on the ground. The one on the ground was the one with the Talent. "That will be enough of that, Sergeant," I growled to get his attention. The Sergeant who was in the process of drawing his foot back for another kick instantly whirled around on one foot to see who was behind him. What he saw was not a young Mark O'Connell. No, what he saw was the grizzled face and...

Magic Ink III the Other RealityChapter 15

The sun was well up when I awoke the next morning. I was indeed loved. Gretchen was still in my arms, and Clare and Shannon had moved up against me. Clare was pressed against my back, and Shannon was pressed up against her little blond friend. I lay there for a time thinking about what had happened last night. It had indeed been an exceptional night, but I was worried. I had three women in love with me. Somewhere along the line, I had already decided to marry two of them. This, of course,...

Magic Ink IV Ken and KellChapter 36

Kell and his twins arrived an hour, or so after we had gotten back. He knocked on our door when they got upstairs. They looked tired. "Anything?" I asked, after they were seated on the bed. "A morning's ride, some nice scenery, and time spent at two ancient sites, but no trace of recent Magic use at either of them," he told me. "There were still some traces of ancient Magic at the well. Kell told me that the goddess Airmid was one of the ones that created the healing well, and that...

Magic Ink III the Other RealityChapter 9

"Oh Dear!" the Smith groaned in distress at the table. "What is it, my Sweet?" he asked, as he quickly rose to see what was the matter. He never did make it to the bedroom, as his wife led a small boy and girl out into the main room. She was followed by a girl a few years older than the pair of youngsters, and Clare and Cathleen. "Look at them, Henry!" the wife demanded, excitedly. "This morning, they could hardly hold their heads up, and now they are as well as you, or I. How could...
