Annie and Sara arrived at the printing plant just after 12:30. Sean and I were just finishing cleaning up the presses, and only needed to use a quick spell to clean ourselves up and be presentable. Annie and Sara were wearing jeans like Sean and I were, but had on heavy blouses and jackets rather than the "Magic Ink" T-shirts that Sean and I were wearing with our sneakers. They had also brought jackets for us.

"It's a lot colder in Denver than it is here," Sara told us, as they handed us the jackets.

We went through the portal to the Denver store after telling Uncle Will that we had finished and were leaving. George and another clerk were in the Denver store when we came out of the booth.

"Hi, George," I called, as we emerged.

"Hi guys ... and you too ladies!" George answered and looked at us peculiarly. "I'm not expecting a delivery," he told us.

"We aren't delivering anything. We're on the way to see Mrs. O'Neill," I told him.

"It's our birthday," Sara told him, happily.

"Congratulations, girls. How old are you now?" George asked.

"We're fifteen now," Annie informed him with a smile.

"I understand that it's quite a walk to your old house," George said because we were all only fifteen, and none of us had a driver's license.

"Oh, we aren't going to walk," Sean told him, even though we could have. "We're going to use Magic." Annie and Sara closed their eyes and concentrated on the living room of their old house while I chanted the spell that we had learned while studying for our Master's Level exams and made the sign for it in the air.

We instantly disappeared from the bookstore and reappeared in Mrs. O'Neill's very disorganized living room. Actually disorganized might be too weak a description. Disaster might better suit the scene before us. There were pillows and other things scattered everywhere in addition to the numerous beer cans on the floor and the furniture, along with several whiskey bottles. Some of the beer cans hadn't been empty before being discarded and the place smelled like a bar or a brewery. Annie and Sara had a horrified look on their faces.

"Are you sure we're in the right house?" Sean asked. The two young women looked around, still aghast at the condition of the room. They spent several minutes looking carefully at things before answering his question.

"Yes, this is or was our house. All of the furniture is correct, even the pictures on the wall, and the paint are correct, but what happened here? It wasn't like this when we visited before Christmas!" they both told us, indignantly.

"Where is your Mother?" Sean asked.

"I don't know!" Sara answered, beginning to panic, and called, "Mom!"

"Mom are you here?" Annie called, when we got no response.

"Let's look around," I suggested, "but in pairs."

"Yes, we don't need any surprises," Sean added. Sean and Sara headed for the dining room and kitchen while Annie and I went to check the bedrooms and bathroom. We had checked the girl's old room and the hall bathroom when Sean and Sara rejoined us. They didn't look very happy.

"Nothing there?" I asked.

"Just a bigger mess," Sean replied. Sara didn't say anything, but looked very upset. It turned out that she was justified in that when we opened the door to the master bedroom.

The scene before us was like a clip from a disaster movie. There was a large man on the bed, but all of the bedding, as well as clothing, was scattered about the room on the floor and other furniture, and he was nearly naked and asleep or passed out on the bare mattress. There were more beer cans on the floor, and another empty whiskey bottle on the night stand.

Laura, the sisters' Mother, lay on the floor at a strange angle. Her face was bruised and both eyes were blackened. There was dried blood on her face and on the floor beneath her from a cut on her scalp. There was a heavy collar of some sort around her neck. The fact that she was naked and had bruises and other marks on her body was partly concealed by the sheet that covered part of her. She had the end of the sheet in one hand.

"Mother!!" both girls screamed in unison and dropped to their knees to help their mother. The scream woke the man on the bed, who looked around as if unsure where he was, and things were apparently still rather blurry from the booze he had consumed before passing out on the bed.

"What the fuck are you kids doing in here?" he demanded after gathering his wits somewhat.

"What are you doing in our Mother's house, and what did you do to her?" Annie demanded in a shrill voice, as she came to her feet.

"Is that bitch your Mother!?" he demanded with a leer. "Come over here, girly, and I'll give you some of what she got!" he said rubbing his crotch in a suggestive manner. My quiet Annie literally exploded in anger, she was so mad at this remark.

A spell that I only partly recognized came from her lips as she traced a strange glyph in the air. She had become nearly incandescent with power doing this, and the flames leap up around the bed and touched the ceiling of the room.

The spell ended and Annie collapsed to the floor as the flames disappeared and the light faded from her body. I touched her as she returned to her normal color, and found her to be very warm, actually hot, to the touch.

"Annie, Annie are you all right?" I asked in a pleading voice, as she quickly cooled further. In the meantime Sean and Sara were staring at the bed where the man had been. There was nothing there now, not even a depression on the bare mattress.

"What happened to that guy? Where did he go?" Sean asked in a weak, squeaking voice.

"Go!?" I asked, looking up from Annie to find the bed empty.

"I don't know, but we're going to need to bring Annie back to consciousness to find out," I told them.

"Sean, see if there are any small towels or wash clothes in the bathroom. Wet a couple of them with cold water and bring them in here. We have two women to revive," I told him. Sean returned shortly with a couple of cold, wet wash cloths and a small dry towel.

"Try these," he said, as he handed one to me and the other one to Sara to use on her Mother. We both set to work. I wiped Annie's face and wrists with the cold wash cloth then folded it and placed it on her forehead. She soon opened her eyes.

"What happened!?" she mumbled, and her body shook.

"That's what I was going to ask you," I told her. "You lit up like a Christmas tree and used a spell that I only partly recognized. The flames hid the bed, but when they died down the guy was gone, and you had passed out," I told her.

"OH, dear!" a very shocked Annie said in surprise. "All I remember is being very upset with what he said, and then waking up here on the floor." It was at this precise instant that the flames reappeared with a man in the middle of them - a tall distinguished man in a long toga and a cape. He was smiling at us through the flames.

"I'm sorry about that, Anna," he said earnestly, as soon as he appeared.

"Who are you?" Sara asked in surprise.

"Why I'm Michael O'Neill, your Father, Sara," he told her with a smile.

"Mich... !!... Daddy!?" both sisters screamed in astonishment.

"Yes. I'm your Father," he answered with a continued smile.

"But ... How? ... Where?" Sara began still in shock.

"I'm not really there," he told us. "What you are seeing is an image of me. I'm still in the alternate reality where I live. A long time ago there was only one reality or universe. That was before the rise of technology, back when Magic ruled everything. At a certain point, technology rose faster than Magic, and it was at that point that things split. Our world of Magic went one way, and Magic remained strong.

"Your reality or universe went with technology, especially with the use of iron. You have gone very far very fast with it, but science and technology aren't able to answer all of your questions, or take care of all of your problems now, and Magic has begun to reassert itself," Michael O'Neill told us.

"The Eternal Flame required someone of exceptional Magical Power to come to your reality and help return it to the path of Magic. I was the one chosen to go. Initially it was just a job to be done, but when I met your Mother, it became much more. I came to love Laura and would have remained with her, but!" here he paused, as if unsure what to say.

"BUT!!?" both girls prompted as if hypnotized.

"But things came up at home, and I was left with no choice, but to return and take up the duties that are mine and only mine. I was given no choice in the matter," he finished somberly.

"But you're here now!" Annie protested.

"NO. I'm not really there. You are only seeing my image. It's similar to your television," he told her.

"What happened to that man?" Annie asked, and her voice turned hard.

"Your anger at him gave me a channel into your world, and I used you to cast a spell that sent him to a place in your world that is very cold and far from civilization. He will be a very long time finding his way back to your location. That is if he survives the wilderness where he was sent," Michael O'Neill told his daughter.

"Oh!!" Annie said very quietly.

"Neither of you girls has introduced me to these young men with you," he said next in a chiding voice.

"This is Aengus and Sean O'Connell, our future husbands," Annie told him with a smile.

"Ah yes, the O'Connells! I was told of them. I'm glad that you have found them. Magic is developing rapidly in your reality. It will soon reach a critical point, and then this thing that you call government will take notice of it. They will want to control it, as they do other things in your world, but they will have no Magic of their own and won't understand it. Those drawn to government are usually those most deficient in Magic. It will be interesting to see what you do," Michael told us.

"Will you help us?" Sara asked, coming out of her daze.

"I will not be able to help you directly, at least not more than occasionally and only with advice. You will need to find your own way. Even now the Eternal Flame is telling me that my time is short to talk to you. Tell Laura, your Mother, that I still love her and think of her often. Also tell her that if she must have a man to pick the next one more carefully that the last several that she chose. Good-bye my sweet Daughters. I love you!" he said, as his image faded along with the flames. Both girls stared at the space where his image had been for a short time.

"We need to take care of your Mother," Sean said quietly then. We all turned to Mrs. O'Neill then and Annie and Sara checked their Mother to see how she was and what medical attention she required.

"Did you bring any blessed chalk?" Sean asked me. I checked my pockets and discovered a small piece at the bottom of the front pocket of my jeans.

"Yes, but only a small piece," I told him.

"It will never do," Sean answered in disgust. I had to assume that he didn't have any.

Laura O'Neill slowly returned to consciousness as her daughters continued to work on her. The first sign was a moan.

"Where are you hurt, Mother?" Sara asked.

"What ... how did you girls get here!?" Laura asked coming totally awake.

"We came to see you on our birthday and found you here like this," Annie told her in a disgruntled voice.

"Where's Derick?" she asked in a frightened voice. "He was drunker than usual last night and... !" she didn't finish. "He might hurt you!!" she said at last in a frightened voice.

"You needn't worry about him. Father was here and sent him somewhere cold and far from civilization," Annie told her.

"Michael ... was here!!?" she asked in shock.

"More or less!" Sara told her. "He couldn't stay all that long."

"He did say that he still loves you," Annie told her, earnestly.

"He also said that if you really need a man to choose a better one than the last couple," Sara told her in distaste. "Apparently he is keeping an eye on you."

Magic Ink III the Other RealityChapter 4

We didn't get to see Grandfather Michael until well after noontime. We joined him in his private parlor when summoned. "Good afternoon, Grandfather," we both said in greeting after being told to enter. "Well, what do you think of us after spending your first night here, and scaring the staff half to death?" he asked with a grin. "The scaring part wasn't intentional," I told him. "Maybe not on your part," Pat told him in a disgruntled voice. "And just what is the problem?"...

Magic Ink II the ChildrenChapter 9

Saint Patrick's Day, the 17th of March, fell on a Wednesday this year, 2032. Sean and I had already helped Dad plow the fields in late February, and we had planted the seeds by the 1st of March, as we were having a warm spring this year. The past three years had seen the last freeze in Mid-March, and it hadn't been conducive to early planting. This afternoon, we were out checking the various fields on foot with Annie and Sara. They were still new to farming, and we wanted them to see the...

We were awakened early the next morning to the cold gray light of dawn by the Castellan calling to us through the wards across the stairwell entrance. "Master ... Master, you must come out here. Something awful has happened!" As I sat up in bed, my movement disturbed Sunshine, and she sat up also, as the Castellan continued to call to me. "What is wrong?" she asked. "I don't know. The meal that evening was much more festive than our afternoon snack had been. The twins did try some of the ale which was very good, but only a little, and none of the wine. They had learned their lesson. That night the Sisters wanted sex, which was all right with me. Magic Ink VI the Final OConnellChapter 5

The following new character appears in the next several chapters: Franklin (Frank) Mahony Master Wizard, Celeste's boyfriend, 5'-9'' tall, 160 pounds, 22 years old, dark auburn hair, gray eyes Frank's Tale: I had heard rumors of creatures down in the tunnels under the headquarters building of the Wizard's Council that stole people's Magic if they ventured into the wrong areas down there. There were also stories of missing Wizards who had vanished trying to eliminate this...

Magic Ink VII the Fourth RealityChapter 5

Grace takes over the narrative: Margaret O’Connell and her Husband returned that evening after supper. As promised, she brought the wedding dress and a box of books, but she also brought two lamps with her. “These are Magic Powered lamps, which don’t require fuel or electricity to work. All that you need to do is activate the spell in them with your Talent, and then you can adjust the intensity of the lamp to the level that you require,” she told Owen and me, before demonstrating how to do...

Magic Ink III the Other RealityChapter 25

It was just after 4:00 that afternoon when the radio broke the silence. "Attention all O'Connell teams! We have just received word from the Intelligence Corp that the Persians have landed a short distance down river from Frankfurt. Keep a sharp lookout for their arrival. That's all for now," Grandfather Mark finished. Pat and I used the small pair of binoculars that we had been issued to search the area west of the city, but could only make out the top masts of several ships down the...

Magic Ink IV Ken and KellChapter 24

On arriving at the Hall for the evening meal, we were surprised to see a larger table set up and that several other guests were already there for the meal. The current conversations all stopped when we entered the Hall. "These are my house guests," Lady Feidhelm told the others. "The young man is Master Kellen O'Connell and the young ladies are the Mac Sweeney Sisters, Airmid and Almha, his Apprentices," she finished. "Kellen, these are my guests for the evening meal: Master Murchadh...

Magic Ink III the Other RealityChapter 6

We materialized in the Duke's apartment on the second floor of the Manor house. The lamps there ran on Magic and they were lit. There was a fire in the large fireplace, making it much cheerier than the cell that we had just left. Of course the four girls couldn't see any of this, but they could feel the increased warmth. A large sumptuous dinner had been set out on the large table in the dining area here. It appeared that the Duke and Duchess had been interrupted as they prepared to have...

Magic Ink V The Third RealityChapter 25

Mark's Narrative Continues: We didn't see Seamus or most of his people for ten days following dinner that night. Meagan and Maureen did appear for dinner a couple of times during that period, and they borrowed Dymphna for a time as Seamus and Carl had taken Dealla and Cessair with them. Having three Mages in the Ohio country put a strain on our one remaining Mage, Coleen, who was rather busy with two locations to take care of. Things on this side of the Ohio River had not slowed down or...

Magic Ink III the Other RealityChapter 21

June slipped into July, and we still hadn't found time to return to the Other Reality to visit the girls still there, and to see how they and the Daughters they were carrying were doing. We had planned on returning several times, but every time that we had, something had come up to prevent us from leaving. Aside from the normal work in the fields on the growing crops, and our work in the printing plant, several emergencies had developed to prevent us from leaving. The first was one...

Magic Ink III the Other RealityChapter 11

Because of our late start, there was no way that we could make the fifty kilometers to Gray before dark. We passed through the hamlet of Belleauve that afternoon, and had neared Mirebeau-sur-Beze before deciding to stop for the night. We looked for, and found, a wooded area with a pond nearby, at the edge of an open field. Pat and I had unsaddled our riding horses, unhitched the cart team, and removed their harnesses before we took them out to the pond for a drink. The women were preparing...

Magic Ink III the Other RealityChapter 19

Monday started a week of discoveries and amazement for our future wives. While Pat and I hit the books, as the old saying goes, on Monday morning, our Sisters and female Cousins took our girlfriends shopping in Statesboro. They went on the small bus that makes regular trips to town several times a day so that our people can shop or run other errands. The first shock was the bus itself. It's one of the small types of buses that can carry 25 or so passengers, like those used by many churches...

Magic Ink II the ChildrenChapter 7

At home on Monday we all relaxed for a while except for the need to weed the fields and some maintenance on the new Tractor. Sean and I took Annie and Sara out to show them how to weed with Magic. They were surprised that they knew the spell, and at how easy it was to weed the large fields with Magic. Later our Moms took them out and introduced them to the herbal garden and weeding by hand because many of the herbs and other things growing there would be considered weeds by the Magic spell,...

Magic Ink V The Third RealityChapter 56

"Shannon, what are you doing?" Savannah demanded, standing in the hall behind us. Shannon's head came up off my chest, and she turned toward her Sister in a more determined way than I had seen before. "It's all right, Savannah. He will take us with him and will marry both of us," she told her Sister. Savannah gasped in surprise. "Really? Both of us? Are you sure?" she asked in a doubtful voice. "I told Shannon that I would marry both of you. I will be glad to have both of you as...

Magic Ink II the ChildrenChapter 23

Annie and I spent a troubled night with thoughts of Weres waking us from time to time, as I was sure others in our family did. We had all heard tales about them, but had always assumed that they were just that - tales, and not anything real. We were about to discover if they were real or not. Annie and I were up early for breakfast and were joined by Sean and Sara, who were up equally early. After breakfast there wasn’t anything to do at our houses, so we went over to our parents’ house to...

Magic Ink V The Third RealityChapter 31

Mark resumes the Narrative: I didn't have a chance to return to the barracks room until sometime later. I had checked with all of the Platoon Leaders and the remaining leaders of Olive Hill. I had also created the permanent Portal to Hickory Hill to get supplies in here. Wolf came over to me as I entered the room. He had very hesitantly left the girl that he had rescued, who was asleep on one of the bunks. "I'm sorry that I let you down, Mark, but I ... I just couldn't leave Saoirse....

Magic Ink III the Other RealityChapter 12

The sun was already up when we rose the next morning. It was dry and fairly warm in our defensive shell, and the fire that the Eternal Flame had left was still burning. While the women started on breakfast, Pat and I fed the horses. "We are going to take the horses for a drink," I told the women, as we prepared to move the horses through the defensive shell and our wards. They didn't like this, and were always skittish when we did it. "Breakfast will be ready in a bit," Shannon called...

Magic Ink III the Other RealityChapter 32

The following Monday, the 4th of September, was Labor Day, and on Tuesday, the 5th, we all started back with our home-school studies. Pat and I were now Seniors in high school. Thanks to the work done by the 'Book of Dreams', Shannon and Sheena were now in their Junior year of high school, while Clare and Cathleen had started their Sophomore year. Gretchen and Petra, because of their late start with the 'Book of Dreams' were only on eighth grade work at present, but were advancing rapidly...

Magic Ink II the ChildrenChapter 18

It was July before more checks showed up. It was Wednesday, the 13th, to be exact. On Thursday, the 14th, we returned to Nassau to deposit the latest checks and some excess funds from our parents' regular bank account in Georgia. Our parents were maintaining a large reserve of cash on hand in their house now. They had built it up over the last eleven months. This deposit brought them to over 225 million dollars in the two Nassau banks. It would appear that we weren't the only ones moving...

Magic Ink VI the Final OConnellChapter 9

Mankato's (Robert's) awakening: I awoke next to the woman who had rescued me. From the size of the Talent that I could feel and the amount of Magic energy surrounding her, one would assume that she was a woman of large proportions and stature. In fact, the woman next to me was short with large breasts and a slim but very female figure. In her sleep, her breasts rose and fell rhythmically, and I watched them joyfully for a considerable period of time. At last she awoke and sat up. "How...

Magic Ink II the ChildrenChapter 10

I was awakened by Sean's voice as he pounded on our bedroom door a couple of weeks later. "Gus, Gus! Wake up!" he was shouting. I sat up and that was when the knowledge hit me. It was like someone had suddenly opened a door and all of the Magical knowledge that I had been absorbing for the last five weeks plus was suddenly right there in my mind - whole and in exacting detail. I just sat there stunned at the magnitude of it all for several seconds. I was brought back to reality by...

Magic Ink IV Ken and KellChapter 20

I hated to interrupt the Sisters' fun, but it was getting late in the day, and we needed to come to a consensus on what was to be done. "Would you ladies like to leave here with me?" I asked when they took a little break after exploring the room. "Leave?" they both thought in my mind. "Yes, go somewhere else with me." "We had never considered that we could go somewhere else!" Airmid said in surprise. "How would we do that?" Almha asked. "I can use my Magic to transfer us to...

Magic Ink IV Ken and KellChapter 34

We awoke fairly early the next morning, as the Sisters wanted to see this new castle. I was worried about what Ken had said, and that they would be disappointed. We quickly dressed in our Wizard's robes, but I didn't know if Ken and the O'Hallinan Sisters were up yet. "Ken could still be asleep," I told my women, who were ready to leave for his apartment. "No, they are awake and up," Airmid told me, confidently. "Are you sure?" I asked wondering how she could know that. "Yes, we...

Even before the others had started dinner in the cafeteria, the flashing lights and sirens had appeared outside the defensive shell. They had been preceded by, and were followed by, helicopters of various police and news organizations. Those arriving included: the Fairfax County Sheriff's department, the Virginia State Police, the FBI, and others including local radio and television news reporters. There was a multitude of details to be taken care of before our family would be able to join...

Magic Ink VII the Fourth RealityChapter 8

Owen continues the Narrative: I spent most of the remainder of the day in the shop with Joe. There was work to do on some items that the local farmers had brought in for repair. Frank joined us to observe later that morning. “I’ve always been interested in blacksmithing, but there wasn’t any opportunity to do it or even to see it done where I used to live,” he told us when we had taken a short break after finishing the work on the first item. “Where did you live?” I asked, curious. “I...
