I was sorta expecting it, but it was still a surprise the first time an Earth Hero came through our bank. We had quite a few men who wanted to be crew on our warships and earn some easy money but could not swim, and I had to have something for them to do. I set four of them up as pairs of bank guards so that if anything happened one could continue to watch while the other went for help. One pair had the mornings and the other pair had the afternoons.

I still remembered the bank at Long Cut when some Brotherhood thugs were checking everyone for rings and I’d had to fight my way through them. The guards were supposed to watch for others like them, people just standing around the bank looking at everyone who came out. If the Brotherhood sent anyone to Jayport to watch the bank I wanted to know about it before they could cause any trouble.

And, since they were there watching the bank anyway, they should talk to anyone who came out talking or looking funny. If they weren’t a local the visitor should be sent to go see me. So, several months -maybe a hundred days- after the bank first opened, the first Hero came through our bank.

He looked funny and talked funny and had funny clothes and didn’t know his way around, so one of the guards walked him over to see the local lord. Me. I was in the “Audience Chamber”, really just a meeting room of our still unfinished residence doing the management thing and meeting with different people to decide things, when Gottfried von Nurnberg was brought in and introduced.

“Aus der Deutscher Reich?”

His head whipped around. “Nein, aus das Deutscher Republik.”

I laughed. “Look, can we speak English again? That’s about all the German I know.”

“Yes, of course.”

“Thank you. Welcome to Chaos, Sir Gottfried!”

“Thank you for seeing me so quickly. Am I in arrest?”

“No, you are free to go on your mission. I just wanted to meet you and see what help you needed. Please sit down. Is this your first mission?”

“This is my third mission.”

“Good. You know what you’re doing then. Very well, I am Lord Jason. Can you tell me what your mission is and what help you need?”

“I am to rescue the Lady Carmine Worker from a pirate ship that is supposed to be coming this way. She had been held on the mainland for some time and had been considered a low-priority rescue but since she was sold to the pirates this may be her last chance for freedom. I was given to believe that I could hire a ship here.”

“Do you know how to find this pirate ship? We have no navigation tools here, so most sailors just follow the coast to avoid getting lost.”

“No. We realize that I may not be able to find that ship, but I am her only chance.”

“Very well.” I nodded to the bank guard who had escorted the Hero in. “Can you go find Captain Jono and Captain David and have them come here?”

The guard repeated his orders and left to go track them down.

“Sir Gottfried, do you know where the pirate ship is, and when it might be coming by us here?”

“It left Pollock’s Bay three days ago and is expected to return to its home.”

“Right, and that means it should pass by here sometime today or tomorrow. Do you know anything about how many men the ship has?”

“I was told there are about a hundred pirates on the ship. Can I hire fighting men here?”

“No. Nor can you buy a warship here. However, I will lend you a ship and crew for this mission. Please, have some ale. We cannot brew anything as good as this, so we buy this from one of the mainland cities that is known for its ale.”

We sat and made small talk while we waited for the two captains. If Sir Gottfried was a German, I wanted his opinion on both the Long Cut ale and the local brew. Maybe he could tell us what we were doing wrong. His analysis was that the Long Cut ale was very good for something not brewed according to Das Reinheitsgebot, the German ‘beer purity law’ that was enforced throughout Germany. The local brew, on the other hand, was horse piss that could only be sold in America. He had no idea what we were doing wrong.

On to more important things. Sir Gottfried was not a sailor, and his two previous missions were deep in the mainland where the only water was a river or stream. After a few minutes Jono and David showed up.

“Sir Gottfried, this is Captain Jono and Captain David. They command two of my warships. Captains, this is Sir Gottfried. He is looking for something that may be on a pirate ship that left Pollock’s Bay three days ago. Which of your two crews is complaining the loudest?”

They looked at each other. Jono said “That would me mine, Lord Jason. My crew is all poor. They are eager for more pay so they can spend it all on ale and women and be poor again in three days.”

“Very well. Jono, do you remember when I first showed up at Widemouth and you had to teach me everything about the sea and keep me from getting killed?”

“No, Lord, I don’t remember teaching you anything about the sea. Maybe I kept you from getting killed, though.”

“Can you take Sir Gottfried out and find his pirate ship? You command your ship and your men. He will NOT give you any orders about how to capture the pirate ship. However, once you are alongside you must let him do what he needs to do. Consider this a particularly stupid manhood test. Sir Gottfried must be able to return to his home and say that he did this himself. He may have gotten a lot of help, but the final part he must do himself.”

“Yes, Lord.” Jono was grinning. “Does this particularly stupid manhood test have anything to do with an unusually beautiful woman, a cock-burner?”

I sighed and smiled. “Yes. You understand what is happening here. If Sir Gottfried can rescue her and get her to the bank, she will give him children and they will live happily ever after.” Just not together, right.

That was that. Sir Gottfried was wearing scale armor, though, and would sink like an anvil if he fell overboard. I had Jim Armorer outfit him as well as he could with what leather armor was immediately available, and Jono took him out on Thunder.

They got back in late that night, a captured ship coming in ahead of them. The port guard woke me up when they saw the two ships, and I met them at the pier. Yes, the Lady Carmine Worker was a truly beautiful woman, unquestionably a Cassandran. The dozen or so captured pirates were locked in their hold for the night, and the good knight and his fair lady were given a room to rest in until the bank opened in the morning.

When they came out, I greeted them with “Sir Gottfried, NOW I have a ship to sell you, if you are still interested!”

He laughed. “Thank you, Lord Jason, but I believe that I have everything I need. Unless you object, we will be leaving when the bank opens.”

“That is not a problem. Please keep that armor for your next mission. If you ever come back this way, please arrange to be here long enough for a set to be made specifically for you. You will be happier with how it fits.”

“Yes, Lord Jason. If I don’t see you again, thank you for your hospitality and all of your help. Without your ship and captain and trained crew, this would have been an impossible mission.”

“It was a pleasure to meet both of you. If you ever come this way again perhaps we can spend some time talking.”

That was about it for my first Hero visit. Sir Gottfried had turned out to be surprisingly easy to get along with, and we captured another pirate ship that we otherwise might not have caught. We fed them both breakfast, and when the bank opened they went in. They didn’t come out again.

With both Bridgetown and Small Cove sending warships out, the sea between Hunter Island and the mainland got cleared out fairly quickly. I heard that they also had some fights with ships from the mainland that wanted to contest who could sail where without paying a toll, but those ships just added to the Island’s wealth after the fights. That ended up being their particular share of the job, dealing with any mainland-based people who thought that piracy would be a great way to make a living. If they had to deal with any Pirate Isles ships that got past us that was fine, too.

Widemouth ended up with several ships that they could send out to patrol the western side of the Island, but they had pretty slim pickings. After what happened to Lord Howard’s raiding force and the Brotherhood’s invasion the pirates left Hunter Island alone. Excuse me, they left us “the fuck alone”.

We were the ones getting all the action, based out of Jayport where we could sail immediately when our lookout towers saw a ship. It wasn’t constant, though. Sometimes we’d see a ship every couple of days, while other times it could be eight or ten days between sightings. We had to investigate them all.

Once we had three good warships we could rotate through maintenance periods for each one. We kept an eye on all the green wood we’d used for repairs, and sure enough during the next summer when the ocean water was warmer it all started to soften and leak.

Wrong Place was the worst, since we’d had to replace large parts of the hull sheathing with unseasoned planks. As long as we had Shark and Thunder, though, we could let Wrong Place go back to Widemouth to have the hull repairs done right.

Sea-borne commerce started to pick up again with the decline of the pirate fleet. Of course it took a while for all the mainland cities and towns to recover from the Brotherhood, but they all understood trade. There were still a lot of ships around, and every time we captured a pirate ship there’d be another one on the market for anyone who wanted a cargo ship cheap.

Crossroads A Young Hero

I walked through the headstones towards Dad's car. It was my car now after that accident. I was walking away from the double funeral for Mark and Carol Arrowstone. It was less than a week ago that I had come home to the cops sitting in my driveway to tell me that Mom and Dad had been in a car accident. The drunk driver that hit them was dead too. Standing next to the car was Mike Larter, Dad's lawyer. He was handling the reading of the will and the distribution of my parent's assets. I knew...

Hometown Hero

Not a lot of sex. As always, I want to thank my editors, LadyCibelle and Techsan, for making my story a much better read as well as their suggestions. Chapter 1 I was getting dressed to go to the Fourth of July party. I recently returned home from the service. I was asked to wear my uniform with my latest medals. You see, I was considered a hero in our town. I don’t see myself as a hero, I just did what any soldier would have done in my situation. I’ll try to explain exactly what happened. ...

GSP Chapter 713 What Makes a Hero

G.S.P. Chapter 7 What Makes a Hero? Fang moved through the streets in wolf form carefully following the smell that she tracked. The smells of the many humans closeness to her assaulted her from all directions, but she had no problem moving forward. People parted from her presence, startled by her larger than expected size. Possibly there might be trouble if anyone called the police about a large wolf moving freely in the city, but hopefully she had made enough appearances with the super...

Like a Hero

My head was spinning. Absolutely spinning, and it wasn't just the glass of champagne. The last month, the last year even, had been a complete blur. From high school swim meets, to a generous college scholarship, to the Olympic trials, to the eight days I spent in the Athletes' Village, to the medal stand (three times), to the media circus back home, to this bathroom in the swankiest hotel in the capitol city of the state I was born in. How could so much happen to one person in so little time?...

Death of the Hero

A Hero's death need not always be literally. As the old saying goes, you either die the hero or live long enough to see yourself become a villian. But in doing so a Hero is dead anyways. Gone are the morals and the justice. No longer are they a role model for the youngsters. Often they don't even maintain the same appearance or name. So in essence they are dead regardless. And this is one such story. Our Hero doesn't meet her life's end, but her no beginning as something not quite what she used...

An Unlikely Hero

Ok it was like this I needed furniture for my dorm room such as a comfort chair or maybe a futon or something like that. Hell even a better mattress for the bed would be nice. However I am your typical first year college student. I'm broke all the time. So when I was heading home to my parents' house (Just so they could feed me on the weekend) I noticed a sign that said "estate auction today." Well that sign had an arrow pointing down a cross road of the state highway I was on. I thought to...

Hero

Hero By Cassandra Morgan I knew better, dammit. I was smarter than this. From the time I first dragged a pair of panties up my legs, I have been scared to death of being caught, and the fear has made me sharp. I was never one of those transvestites who secretly wants to get caught by his mom or his wife or his co-workers. I always knew it would start a river of trouble flowing. So I knew better. Hell, I dressed before I went home, but not after. It was just for self-protection....

I had a small house in a quiet neighborhood. Much different than the crowded city where I grew up. My neighbors mostly kept to themselves. An older couple on one side and a single mother with two teens on the other side. The kids were no problem, mostly everyone just waved in passing. As I said, a quiet neighborhood, no problems, until Saturday night. I'd gone out on the back deck about 8 pm. No particlar reason, mostly to enjoy the cooler evening air after a warm day. I couldn’t sleep. I had been trying for what seemed like hours. So, I went for a walk to the park, hoping that would allow me to checkmate the sandman. That’s when I came upon the situation. A guy and a girl in what seemingly looked like an argument. Finding myself not ready to return home yet, I decided to eavesdrop on the squabble. From what I gathered he was her boyfriend and wanted a piece of her ‘teasing’ ass, as he so quaintly put it. I thought to myself, ‘I don’t blame him.’ The girl...

To be a hero

This story will center itself around the main character: the hero. Well…at least that is what he will be at the start. You have to understand dear reader that most villains in real life aren’t inherently evil. They themselves do believe that what they are doing is the right thing. To clarify, this story does start out as a heroic tale. It is in fact a little generic. For example, it is set in the glorious country of the United States. The hero does at the start believe in the workings of a...

I was orphaned at an early age and lived on the street. I got my education through the public comp systems. At sixteen I got a job just off the port warehouse district as a night watcher. It was not much but I made enough to rent a one room apartment once called a studio. The area was very old and close to the port so the buildings were between six to ten stories tall. Since the area was old it was also neglected by a lot of the city maintenance workers. Few constables patrolled the area and...

It wasn’t that Jack had ever wanted to be a soldier. It was not something he chose from a range of professions. So when Jack left school at the tender age of fourteen, as children were allowed to do in those far off days, he worked in the dirt and blackness for two long years,...

On Becoming Miss Louisa Harper of New York and Newport 1

From 'The Autobiography of Miss Louisa Harper' ~ "The summer of 1890 was to be the start of my new life. At fifteen years of age, I was to be presented to society and I had expected that I would then be considered an adult. That, at long last, I would have a say in my own life, my own destiny. That was not to be, though. I was still just a doll to be dressed and used as decoration in the home of my powerful parents. I was made up and dressed and used to impress the visitors who came...

Hayden Panettieres Hero

16th January, 2007 I’d just completed a tour in Iraq serving in the Marine Corp. I arrived at the airport and made my way home. The cooler weather blasted me, used to the warm heat of the Middle East. Grabbing a cab, I instructed him to my home. Having little personal belongings I hauled them into the trunk and sat quietly as the driver babbled incessantly. Getting home, I found an envelope on the kitchen desk with a small box beneath it. Opening up the envelope I noticed the handwriting...

Controlling SisterChapter 4 JP and Lavernersquos son Newtrsquos story

It was the year 2001. 15-year-old Newt looked at himself in the mirror. He could see some of his mother Laverne’s African American features looking back, but also blue eyes and a lighter skin tone that must have come from his unknown father. He growled, angry. Why didn’t his mom ever tell him who his father was? Her insistence that she didn’t know didn’t make any sense! She said that Newt didn’t look like who she thought his father was, and she hadn’t been with any blue-eyed white boys. His...

On Becoming Miss Louisa Harper of New York and Newport 3

From 'The Autobiography of Miss Louisa Harper' ~ "Langdon Beech-Thorndyke III was 'a catch.' Mother and Father thought that he would be a perfect match for me. He was twenty three and I was fifteen. My parents hoped that we would become betrothed that summer and then a grandiose wedding would follow in three years after I turned eighteen. This was my sister's summer, though. Miranda would be married in August to a Vanderbilt cousin who she barely knew. The opulent affair...

Ordinary Heroes

For those who suffered through the bad editing of the first submission I apologize. I owe a great deal of thanks to xtchr for agreeing to edit the story. All the characters and scenario’s are fictitious. The dangers and emotional harm are very real for those in the professions of the story. Seeing the harm done to critical care providers, and one in particular, prompted me to write the story so I am pleased that with xtchr’s help the tale reads as it should. Music of Change 3 We Could Be Heroes

Music of Change: We Could Be Heroes By Valerie Hope I, I will be king And you, you will be queen Though nothing, nothing will drive them away We can beat them - just for one day We can be us - just for one day I, I can remember Standing by the wall And the guns, shot above our heads And we kissed, as though nothing could fall And the shame was on the other side Oh we can beat them, for ever and ever Then we can be heroes, just for one day We can be heroes We can...

Generic Brand Hero

Generic Brand Hero By Sarah Barndt Chapter 1 I was, admittedly, a loser. I was a 24-year-old college dropout who worked at a video store and lived in my parent's basement. Add to that I was 5'5, scrawny and kind of weaselly looking. Well, as you could imagine, I was beating the babes off with a stick. Actually you could describe my love life by removing the words "the babes" and "with a stick" from the last sentence. The only thing that kept my Dad from thinking I was a...

On Becoming Miss Louisa Harper of New York and Newport 2

From 'The Autobiography of Miss Louisa Harper' ~ "Beauty comes from pain, Louisa. A proper young woman does not present herself unless she is properly coiffed, properly made-up, properly attired and wearing the proper accoutrements. That, Louisa, is what 'proper' means." Of course, I tried to argue. That is, after all, what an adolescent is supposed to do, but my mother would just purse her lips, shake her head in disgust and repeat that one sentence that she spoke most frequently...

On Becoming Miss Louisa Harper of New York and Newport 6

From 'The Autobiography of Miss Louisa Harper of New York and Newport' ~ "The day of Miranda's wedding was cloudy and overcast, so perhaps Aunt Ada had been correct. Perhaps God would not waste a beautiful day on a wedding that would lead to a loveless marriage. Instead of using the vast tents that had been erected on the lawns at Golden Bluffs, everything was moved into our grand ballroom, which was large, but could not accommodate everyone who'd been invited. So, tables were also...

On Becoming Miss Louisa Harper of New York and Newport 5

From 'The Autobiography of Miss Louisa Harper' ~ "The week prior to Miranda's wedding was a hectic and crowded one at Golden Bluffs. All of our relations came to Newport for the event and many of them stayed with us. Unfortunately, we also had many friends and business associates staying as well, which did lead to some difficult choices. Father was a self-made man who had family he wanted in attendance, but they were from a lower rung of society. So, since the rooms were assigned to...

Earths CoreChapter 4 Shelter Of Heroes

After wishing good luck to the participants, Archbishop Silternja sat in his middle seat, at the left end seat sat Cardinal Northstar, His Young Eminence sat in the other middle seat and Sister Iaura at the right end seat. Priest announcer Armin exited the arena, leaving only the one thousand and three participants inside. “Thank you, Archbishop Silternja”, he said with no hint of intention to address the two youngsters sitting together with the holy Archbishop and Cardinal, as if he was...

The Hero

Midfield Wisconsin, a medium-sized city by Midwestern standards, lies perched high above the shores of Lake Michigan. A long Coast Guard pier juts one mile out into the lake, slants sharply to the south then out for another quarter mile. This structure helps form a channel creating one of the best harbors on the lake, from which a fleet of commercial fishing boats goes forth each morning, accompanied by hundreds of swirling, squawking gulls. Huge merchant ships come and go, supplying coal and...

Someones Hero

In an age of time when the destruction of modern civilization slowly descends upon us we must look to a future when someone, anyone will rise up and take the reigns so long ago dropped and lift us back to our rightful path. This at least was the thoughts and the most constant staple of Professor Damien’s lectures. He knew that the inner cities were going to hell and also that his student ratio had jumped by 60% over the last few years. At the ripe age of 45 he was still younger than the larger...

Christmas Hero

I wrote this story shortly after Christmas of 2102. It is a work of fiction. Names, places and events are a product of my imagination. I hope you enjoy it for what it is. * When the IED exploded eight Marines of Lieutenant Karl Richart Schmidt’s platoon lay wounded and exposed to sniper fire from a group of insurgents hiding in the village. Schmidt’s instincts told him to remain hidden behind the low stone wall which the remainder of his men had taken cover. Then his training kicked in....

Comic Hero

Growing up as a kid, I was mesmerized by Popeye, The Sailor Man. It was a collection of my grandfather’s comic books that I had inherited. It was a ridiculous cartoon strip started in the nineteen-twenties. In it, Popeye a spinach glugging nerd constantly saves Olive Oyl, an even more absurd looking creature from the advances of a gorgeous looking, butch hunk named Bluto. Even as a child, I was unable to understand why Olive would be distressed by the machinations of the uber-masculine Bluto,...
