Jeff awoke at 4:00 A.M. and slowly worked his way out from under the arms and legs of Diana and Arlene, both of whom were still sleeping soundly. By the time he was on his feet, so was Kayla.
As she snuggled her nude body against his, he whispered into her ear. "Go back to bed. I've missed my morning runs for several days. I'm wide awake, so I'm going to get back into my routine, and... get a little of a different kind of exercise," he finished with a grin.
With a faint giggle, she kissed his neck and whispered back. "You gave me some excellent exercise last night, but no way are you going out on that road without me."
"Kayla," he responded, a little louder than he intended. Quickly glancing at the bed to see if he had awakened anyone, he went on in a quieter voice, "Security will be there, and you know how well trained they are. And you also know that I'm not exactly helpless. There's no need..."
"Hush, Husband. Not only am I your last line of defense, but I'm your wife. Now, let's hurry and get to our suite at the Retreat so we can get our running gear on. Too bad we didn't bring our stuff to the Ship so she could duplicate it in this suite. Kayla chuckled as they continued their slow jog to limber up. "I've wanted to try that, but..."
"No!" Jeff barked out. Then in a quieter voice went on, "Sorry. I didn't mean to say it just that way. But one miscalculation and snowboard and rider would go over the side. I don't want to even think about that. Arlene has promised me she won't do it again and I certainly don't want anyone else to try, either."
"Yes, Dear," she responded with a chuckle.
The two were quiet until they turned onto the county road where they met two of Security's SUV's. As one pulled ahead of them, Carter got out of the second one. "Good morning, Colonel. Good morning, Lieutenant."
"Good morning," Jeff and Kayla said as one. Then Kayla asked, "Why so formal this morning? I thought we had already covered that."
Carter just grinned back at her as they grouped up and began their run. "Just habit, I guess."
Kayla smiled back at him, saying in a teasing voice, "Good, I was beginning to think that you were mad at me or something."
They chatted for a few minutes as Jeff, mindful of Carter's size, led them with an easy pace while they warmed up. "You're aware of the female that was searching the stack of pipes, right?"
"Oh, yes, Sir. Lieutenant Mayfield briefed us, and we've all watched the video Ship sent us. We spent several hours last night going over all we know about the woman. I agree with the Lieutenant; it just doesn't make sense. She has a perfect record, and, trust me, Security had already done an exhaustive background check on her, and there isn't a clue that she could ever be an assassin."
Jeff didn't even bother to mention that Carter wasn't part of Security, but he fully expected that all the members of his team were now just as familiar with Charlotte Bankston's background as Carter was. But the Prime did say, "Thank you," with his voice carrying just that little extra bit of gratitude that made Carter aware of what Jeff was thinking about his team, and Carter in particular.
Suddenly, Jeff almost glared at the big man. "Dammit, Carter, a few months back you completed your degree, and, in addition, you've passed all our tests with flying colors, yet you won't even take a Sergeant's position, let alone a Lieutenant's. And, yeah, I know that I've brought this up on several occasions. But you would be great at either position. Hell, you have stepped up before when your Sergeant was hit. The team respects you and will follow your commands in a heartbeat. Why..."
"Respectfully, you know why, Sir. The team already has a Sergeant and a Lieutenant, and they're both damn good at their jobs, so there's nothing open on the team and I ... don't want to leave to take either position on another team."
"If I ordered you to take the job..."
"But you won't, Colonel," Carter returned in a quiet voice.
There was another long pause as the three jogged on, Jeff having brought the pace up to a nine minute mile – all Carter could withstand for seven miles. He could run a six minute mile for one mile, but because of his bulk, he could not hold that pace for the seven miles that Jeff assumed Carter planned to cover this morning, since that was what he did the last time they ran together.
