We still had a way to go, but Ona only gave me details on the suppliers, what products they supplied, how much they wanted to charge us, and how much we were willing to pay. These deals could net the salesperson millions of dollars a month in commissions. Tens of millions if we were to accept that they were giving us their bottom price, which was a minimum markup of four-hundred percent over their costs, and we had our ships and planes to get it from them. The biggest thing keeping them as suppliers are because I hadn’t changed them out, not because they were the only ones around. When talking about millions of dollars in production from each supplier each month, every percent impacted my bottom line. Even if I didn’t care about how much I made from here, it wasn’t a profitable business practice to let them screw me on pricing. Some were part of the family businesses of elite families.
The vendors are those who run the various shops on the island. Some had complaints, while others weren’t always doing as their contract stated. I would meet with each one, including those doing as contracted, without any grievances. It was another part of my job as the owner.
When we went to where I was to meet the first supplier, I was surprised to see Alani and some older adult males from her family. She was in the seat that faced where I was to sit. She stood, came around to shake my hand, and introduced me to the members of her family that were in charge of different things that the resort bought from them.

“We are both new to these processes, David, but this is business,” Alani explained. “My mentors have cautioned me not to allow our friendship to intervene with business negotiations. I must separate business relationships from personal ones at these times. You know I have complained about the responsibility I have as the head of all my family. Everyone who had sat down but soon stood up again. I couldn’t see why. When I turned to see who came in, I was surprised that I saw someone who looked like a ringer for Molly. He started going into a sales spiel, but I waited for him to take a breath to tell him that I had no idea about laundry detergent or pretty much any of the other things we bought here. I could get the proper people in here for him to discuss the products he had available. I explained that the meeting is to discuss what we paid for what we bought from him, not to change things right now.
Ah. That is why Alani has that nasty grin on her face.
She cut off her uncle’s attempt to keep selling snake oil with, “You are correct, David. Your time is in very short supply. Let us get down to the business at hand.”
He gave me the current contract price per shipping container, the annual percentage increase, and the costs for shipping.
“A quick question,” I interrupted. “You show a section for shipping costs. Are those what you pay to have it shipped to your warehouse or dock?”
Does he look shocked that I am asking about shipping?
He took a few seconds to get his thoughts together and then replied, “These are the shipping costs related to getting the product to your resort.”
“I’m confused, then. Ona, my assistant, briefed me that we handle getting it from the supplier’s warehouse and handling it when it arrives here. I do have a few college degrees, but it looks like I must go back to get something in a business area,” I said. “This seems like an administrative error in your billing department. It should be no problem to have those charges credited back to my account since I became the owner of this resort. I will let my accounting team look over all the line items more closely, but I see a fuel surcharge, port charges, and a few other things that don’t look like they are related to costs I should be paying. I’m only buying the laundry detergent plus paying sales taxes at the point of delivery.”
Ah, that is why Alani looks like a hungry lioness ready to pounce.
“I know you are new to this, so you don’t know that is a cost of doing business,” he said, sounding like a used car salesman.
I looked him in the eyes, watching him get a shiver, and said, “Oh, I am new to this business, but I remember high school economics class. Companies where I take their wholesale cost, add on the costs to get at the point of sale and then divide by the number of items to get how much they paid per item or quantity. A store can’t sell it for that price, or they don’t make money. They raise the sales price to cover their costs and make a profit. If I want it sent to me, then I expect to pay the shipping charges. If I go to the store, I won’t pay a shipping charge. How do you run your business? High school economics don’t teach how to balance a checkbook, whatever that is, anymore, and my dad said that was about all it was useful for when he went to school.”

I told him that we would expect to see a credit toward our account by the start of business on the Monday after the end of this two-week vacation. Now that we had that all resolved, we could talk numbers. That is when it got interesting. He gave his spiel about his costs increasing, so he needed to pass it to his customers.
The others noted that they, too, needed to correct some “default” charges and credit those back to me. I didn’t know all the little things we buy in bulk. I could get toilet paper, but I wouldn’t have thought the same for purchasing furniture each month.
I will dig into that a bit deeper. We aren’t renovating, so we shouldn’t need to purchase a thousand dressers a month unless they are crap.
The Molly doppelganger waited for them all to finish before asking, “Why should David continue to do business with any of you as suppliers?”
