As Aric and Brianna made their way downstairs they headed to the den and saw Galen sitting in a chair at his desk making some notes with his back to the doorway.

Just as Aric was getting ready to knock on the door frame Galen said "About time you woke up boy. We need to have a talk. I should have had it with you long ago, but I put it off thinking that what I was seeing couldn't be true. But now I understand it is."

As Aric and Brianna came into the room and took a seat on the couch Galen turned his chair around and looked Aric over. Then he looked over at Brianna.

"I'm going to take a wild stab here and guess that you infused Brianna with some of your magic and used it to heal her. She told me that you healed her after the Dragon badly burned her, but as of now she has not a scratch on her and she looks as lovely as the day I first met her," smiled Galen at Brianna.

Brianna blushed when he said that.

It had been a long time since someone blatantly said something like that to her.

People might have said it in conversation with her over the years lately, but they had not made it a point to seek her out and say it as they used to when she was younger. She didn't even realize she missed it until Galen did it just now. To be honest she never thought she would miss it at all.

"But how does my healing Brianna have caused her change?" Aric asked.

"For most mages it wouldn't. You would have just been repairing what existed. But Brianna, based on how badly she said she was burned, was beyond saving. She should have died. But you interfered with that didn't you?" asked Galen looking at Aric.

"Catch this," said Galen as he tossed a much bewildered Aric the globe.

"It went through its normal gyrations of colors, but they don't seem as bright as they normally do," thought Aric.

"Yep I thought so. You gave Brianna some of your magic to keep her alive. I already gave her the globe as well, but she isn't a mage," said Galen as a matter of fact to head off Aric's next question.

"But then what..." started Aric.

"Brianna is what we would now call a "physical adapt" in the magic world. She now has magic, but she can't tap into it to use it. But her body can use it to enhance her abilities. She will be able to run a little faster, move a little quicker, hear a little better. All her senses will be enhanced. She won't give off the effect of magic usage to those who can detect magic because it's now part of who she. But it's now there," said Galen.

"But her change in age?" began Aric.

"Yes that is what we should have talked about earlier. Normally I would have waited till you were on your very late 60's to 70's to have this talk. But you didn't appear to be aging normally," said Galen.

"What did my aging have to do with anything about Brianna?" asked Aric.

"How old would you say I am?" asked Galen.

Knowing this was important, Aric didn't try to pull any punches.

"When we met I harshly thought about 300, but if I had to guess I'd say 80 or at the outside 90, from your appearance," said Aric. "But you always seemed like that to me."

"I'll be 193 next spring," said Galen with a smile. "And if you think about it I don't appear to have lost any steps do I?"

"WHAT!" Aric said.

Brianna just stared at Galen in quiet shock.

"How is that possible?" asked Aric.

Galen leaned forward and stared hard at Aric and Brianna.

"What I tell you now can not be discussed with anyone. Not now not ever. And once I fully explain why if you do you will do more damage than good you'll understand," said Galen.

"Haven't you ever wondered why mages tend to live alone? Why mages almost always seem to either be young or old but barely anything in between?" asked Galen.

As he asked his questions, but Aric and Brianna seemed to be lost in thought. Once they thought about it, they did seem to realize there was a pattern, but they never really thought about it before.

"Now that you mention it..." began Aric.

"See magic has the ability over time to change an individual. But only if the mage is very powerful and willing to let it. If a powerful mage routinely exhaust his or her magic they will age as normal and it won't matter what they do. But if the mage uses it sparingly then it will tend to build up over time. Once that starts to happen it will eventually slow down the aging process," said Galen.

As before, once he added this information Aric thought back to his professors at the academy and how when they dropped off the boys, Professor Greenwell seemed to still be the same age as when he last saw him almost 40 years ago. Suddenly it all made sense.

"This is why mages tend to be loners. Some even go as far as to move far away from others to prevent them from finding out. As long as they aren't too visible most people ignore them in their day to day life. But once a mage starts to become too visible they eventually need to move to keep the secret. If they didn't people would be trying to figure out how to do what you just did to lengthen their lives," said Galen

"But what about the academy? They have Professors all over the place I know I saw when I was younger there," said Aric

"Yes they do, but think about it. Most of the people that would put that fact together are dead now right? Since the academy is basically a city unto itself, there is no reason to keep most folks who aren't mages around.

"And since anyone who works there is used to seeing magic daily, they would assume the mage is using a spell to hide their true age. So they just accept it as matter of fact. Once another mage understands why to keep the secret they aren't going to be spilling it all over the place," smiled Galen.

"But you said young or old, no in between. Is that a problem?" asked Brianna.

"Well most of the young mages tend to get themselves killed early on overestimating their abilities. And if they are powerful enough and don't exhaust their abilities, then they usually grow to be old mages but hide out of the public eye as much as possible," smiled Galen.

"But why did you want to tell me this?" asked Aric.

"Well normally you would have aged to the point where you were in your late sixties or seventies then stopped aging. But you didn't. Your body appears to have stopped at thirty! I kept waiting for it to start aging again, but it never did.

"Powerful mages tend to age about 1/3 as fast as a regular human once they reach that point. But I'd have to guess that you aged about ¼ as fast because of how your power worked and because you had so much of it. But now after sharing your power with Brianna I think you are now back on track with the rest of us, but you reset Brianna to the same point you are at now." said Galen.

As Aric sat there stunned, Brianna whispered "So that's why it was happening. I always wondered but it didn't make any sense that he never looked any older."

"Throw in the fact that he always fell back on his hand to hand training, not to mention his great strength. And the fact he was hiding from his true power ever since he was hurt by that girl. Yes I know about it boy so don't try and pretend you weren't," said Galen to a blushing Aric.

"That combination had Aric storing his magic for years trying to keep from evoking the stupid legacy," said Galen.

"But now you have to be content with the known world knowing you by everything you've been up to lately when you decided to quit hiding from your potential.

"So far in less than six months you went from only having that rumored battle of 10,000 from when you were a kid to destroying part of a city, freezing a harbor, freeing slaves, and now slaying a Dragon.

"It seems that once you had sufficient reason too, you quit being concerned about that stupid legacy," said Galen smiling at a blushing Brianna.

"But what about Brianna? What about the kids?" Aric asked.

Galen stared at him a minute then said "In Brianna's case, given that she now carries magic she can't use so she will probably age slowly at about the same rate as a normal mage from this point forward.

"And the fact she can't really exhaust her magic means she will has no way to deplete it like you or I can to cause her any problems. That is one of the dangers of infusing magic into something. But if I had to guess I would say that you will still outlive her, but not by much."

"But understand this, neither she nor are you are immortal. You can still get sick. You can still be cut, stabbed, and killed. You will eventually die. All the magic does is allow you to live a little longer, but not forever. But we have to keep this from being found out above all else or your lives may be in danger from everyone trying to duplicate what you did.

"That's why you couldn't find her once you healed her. Once I saw her behind you as you were fighting the Dragon, I couldn't let anyone see her. So I made her and I invisible and went to get her while you were distracted. If I didn't we would now have more questions than we could comfortably answer," said Galen

"But in the case of the kids. Brianna, answer me a question? When you worked with the kids before when they were smaller, did they just see you do something once and then copy it or did they have to work at it every day?" asked Galen.

"They seemed gifted, but they learned it as they went. They did seem to learn fast, but yes they had to practice and work at it. We've been training since they were old enough to hold a weapon," said Brianna.

"If you think about it I bet that was similar to how you learned weapons over time. How about Aric the first day you worked with him until now? Did he have to learn it like that?" asked Galen

"Now that you mention it, no. It was like he saw me do it once then he could almost pull it off exactly as I did it. What we always worked on over the years was different ways to put into practice what he saw me do.

"There are literally millions of combinations that can be used with a weapon, and at some point he just physically couldn't do some of what I did, but he tried to mimic it best he could and the practice let him see how best to defend or attack against what he couldn't," said Brianna as she turned and stared at Aric as if seeing him for the first time.

"And that is the key word you used. Mimic. It didn't really matter before so I never said anything, but now that we're covering everything you should know that your kids while they are really gifted they technically aren't Battlemages. Well a better way to say it is that they are Battlemages by hard work and skill, but not by abilities," said Galen.

Both Aric and Brianna turned and stared quiet mouthed at him for a second.

"That doesn't make any sense. How can they use a sword and steel and then magic if they aren't Battlemages?" Aric finally asked.

"How strong would you say you are?" asked Galen.

"I don't know. I would guess that I'm pretty strong, a lot stronger than average I would say," said Aric.

"How about learning? Has it always come easy to you?" asked Galen.

Earlier Aric had headed into the warehouse that was the second from the end a block over from where his sons were. He thought because it looked cleaner and better up kept he might find more information here than anywhere else. As he entered he shifted into magic mode and looked for thermals. He saw that there was one man in the center office ahead and about sixteen men in different rooms off to the side of him. They were far enough away that he could see they wouldn't disturb him as he...

Vanessa was scared! She was currently making her way home and trying to do it without anyone seeing her. She took an extended vacation right before Rayne showed up in the city so if by some remote chance anyone saw Rayne, in the slavers quarter, they wouldn't think she had anything to do with it. The plan was to create some deniability in case anyone tried to link her to Rayne's disappearance. But when she came back and went to the guild office later that night to get her share of...

"Girls we're about six days away from the guild so we'll stay here tonight," said Brianna as they headed into the second of two inns. They alternated between camping outside and Inns when they could. Since the guild didn't have a real set time they had to be there, Brianna, Rayne, and Cassie decided to take their time getting to the guild. Normally they could make it there in 3 weeks easy, but they took an extra week taking it slow, to let the girls have a good look around them as they...

"Uh, Aric. May I call you Aric? We are deeply sorry for what happened. The people of the city of Galicia don't normally behave like this or cause problems like this for anyone. We're normally more careful to not force ourselves on others," began the Chancellor quickly. He was starting to sweat heavy at the expression on Aric's face. When Aric and his family came to visit him the morning after Aric had awakened, the Chancellor went around trying to shake everyone hand and greet everyone...

As the town came into view they could see that parts of it were on fire. Caelan was trying to keep everyone up on what was going on via Darla as they rode the horses hard towards home. But there was a lot going on and some of it was getting lost in translation. Darla had her hands full trying to fight fires, show Caelan the devastation, and talk with Galen about what he thought was going on. But from what they could piece together, it appeared that all of their homes were attacked first...

"Girls, girls. Does everyone have their packs and weapons secured?" asked Brianna as she looked around the clearing. Brianna stood with her pack already secured on her back and her twin swords at her waist while she surveyed the four girls, Gem, Haley, Beth, and Ariel. She wanted to make sure that they had everything for the three week long journey to the guild for their entrance exam and testing, and that they left nothing behind they would need. As she looked over the girls Rayne and...

Aric was pissed and growing more pissed as the weeks went on. While the twins were also upset, it was starting to scare them how angry their father was becoming as each day passed that they didn't find everyone. He was short with everyone they met and at times outright threatening to them. And one time they thought they might not be able to fully restrain him when one man stupidly bragged when asked that he and Brianna spent the night together as they passed through his town. Aric said he...

"OH MY GOD ARIC WE HAVE A PROBLEM! IT'S A REALLY BIG PROBLEM AND WE NEED TO FIGURE OUT WHAT TO DO FAST! OH MY GOD WHAT DO WE DO!" said Matt frantically as he raced into Aric's home through the front door. He didn't even knock as he raced in and he said all this to Aric as one big word in his rush. Aric and the twins had been back about two days. It was early afternoon and Aric was getting ready to do some heavy digging while Brianna was gone. Brianna had wanted some of the trees...

He could see bones here and there through the blackened and blistered skin, and some of the blisters were weeping a clear fluid....

Riding into the small town, it was aptly named "Dresden's Last Chance" There wasn't much to see but a few homes and a few businesses, maybe twenty to thirty buildings in total. Dusty slowly opens his eyes and looks around and sees he's in a very nice room and Suzan is sleeping with her head down on the bed in a chair she's pulled up to the bed. It looks like she's been watching over him. As he groggily reaches out he softly touches her head, where he then starts to slowly stroke her hair. It seemed amazingly soft to him as he did. There was a single desk outside the council chambers, and at it sat a very striking and attractive red haired woman. I just feel safer with mine as well," said Nathan grumbling as he walked along. While he wasn't really irritated at Ariel, he was irritated at the situation. "For the very reason you just stated. You should be comfortable with every weapon you know how to use well. But that won't happen if you only carry that one...

Battlemage Nonetheless Book 2 CatalystChapter 2

The next morning Dusty got up very early, before the sun was even close to coming up, and started packing his pack for the next mission. As he pulled out clothing to take with him he noticed the suede leather jacket and jeans that he was wearing when he arrived here hanging in the wardrobe in the corner of his room. Seeing them once again took him back to when he first appeared in this world just under over a year ago. A lot of things had changed. First of all he now believed in magic. It...

Battlemage Book 1 Beginnings and DiscoveriesChapter 14

"ARRRGGHHH!! What do we do now!" asked Andrea for about the fourth or fifth time since getting to Daven's office as she paced back and forth. Daven leaned back and watched her pace. Even though she was severely agitated, her pacing, and the waving of her arms in that dress, was doing wonders for her anatomy. No wonder he loved that dress on her and he thought again no wonder he had always wanted her. Once he got her unwound she was a tiger in the sack. He would really miss their time...

Battlemage Book 8 Origins and Dark RevelationsChapter 9

"What... ? What does he mean that Aric doesn't love me as much as he did Andrea? How could he say that he knows for sure that Aric only stayed with me because I was the only person he had sex with? Aric's not that type of person! "No, that couldn't be it. He's just trying to make me feel bad. Aric loves me more than he ever loved her, I know he does. I just know he does, " thought Brianna, but deep down she was starting to wonder if there was really any truth to that...

Battlemage Book 1 Beginnings and DiscoveriesChapter 13

Aric worked hard while he was at the academy. And while it was grueling work, it was getting him where he needed to be. He wanted to finish fast to be back in Andrea's arms. He was ready to be married and with all that it entailed. The professors couldn't believe how fast he learned, and he seemed to be ready for any class he could take. The only exception was the class for Applied Black Magery, that class he refused to take. He didn't like the necromancy involved and flat out refused to...

Battlemage Book 1 Beginnings and DiscoveriesChapter 16

While Aric was making his way to see Aaron, Andrea and Daven were still shocked over Aric's announcement that he was through with them. To the best of their knowledge he never gave up on anyone. But for all intent and appearances he had on both of them! And to make it worse he was going to keep his word, they knew he would. Andrea still sat on the floor stunned. "Aric is done with me," she thought really worried. "Aric said he is done with me? That can't be! What am I going to do? I...

Battlemage Book 9 Glimpses Into TomorrowChapter 12

"So all the tests prove that Beth is now resistant to all forms of poison?" asked Anne-Marie as she put down one of the various reports that she had been looking over in front of her and leaned back in her chair. She now had the six of them in her office once again and she was looking them over. Once they returned to the guild, the first thing Ayden and a few of the mature Sisters did was to check out Beth. He was the best able to tell them what he did and the few White mage they had...

Battlemage Book 10 Darkness Under a Scarlet MoonChapter 8

Groaning Terrance rolled out of the wreckage of the bookcase he was lying in. There were a few sharp points and splinters he pulled free of his skin, but thankfully none were in his face or eyes. As he looked over at the ruined mess that was a side table he saw the light stirring of Rory. "Hey, are you ok?" asked Terrence tiredly "How can any one person have that much strength?" asked Rory as he finally opened his eyes and looked at Terrance. "The way he threw us I think he only...

Battlemage Book 10 Darkness Under a Scarlet MoonChapter 9

"Are you ready? We don't have to do this if you really don't want to. We might be able to find another way. Or we could find someone else, or..." said Kat as she looked at Rory. Rory reached out and put his hand on her arm and gently held it. "Kathryn, we don't have a lot of time and it's not like it's our first time together, remember? Ariel is running loose and it's only a matter of time before she runs into a caravan or something else, and a lot of innocents become harmed...

Battlemage Nonetheless Book 6 ApprenticeChapter 16

Dusty started to run into the room, but he stopped and took a good long look around first looking for traps. As he stepped into the room he saw Galvin as he basically finished hanging his wife next to Daniel and Rachel from a hook by a chain around both of her wrists. When Galvin stepped back he could see that her shirt was ripped badly in the front and one of her breasts was in danger of spilling out of her already heavily overworked bra. He watched Galvin seem to take a good long look at...

Battlemage Nonetheless Book 2 CatalystChapter 13

Two men stood looking at the prone form of their leader. They just received the report that the man wanting to join them, a Christopher Jones, was just killed by someone a very powerful. It didn't look like magic that killed him, but they also had no idea at this point how he died. The men weren't too broken up about it because they felt the fool was wrong to be experimenting on children and they wouldn't miss him. He contacted them before with a deep desire to join their ranks and said...

Battlemage Nonetheless Book 3 EnvoyChapter 2

"Mmmmmmm ... do you really need to get up and go work out so soon? The sun isn't even up yet. You really should come back to bed. I need you. I mean I really need you. You could just as easily work out with me instead you know," said Suzan softly but in her deep raspy voice. Even with just barely opening her eyes, she knew that she had her husband's complete attention. They had gone to bed the previous night in the buff and she could see his response to her request instantly. He was...

Battlemage Nonetheless Book 3 EnvoyChapter 6

During the first week that Dusty and the others had left Marie and Seth had met with the King and Marie trained in the yard to keep up her skills, tone her body, and generally keep busy. The King gave her one of the outer rooms that faced the parade yards so that she was well away from the other nobles but close enough that she could work out in the yard and visit with Seth. King William gave her a knowing smile as his secretary briefed her where she would be staying. Marie smiled back at...

Battlemage Nonetheless Book 3 EnvoyChapter 12

Once out of the chamber Dusty smiled and raced down the hall to grab Suzan's hand as she was still storming down the hallway, and pulled her trembling frame into an embrace. As he did he noticed that her face was unreadable, but he could see as he did this that she was still very much pissed off. While pulling her close he buried his face in her hair. "I'm sorry honey, but should have told you that you broke nothing. If I hadn't been so caught up in self pity I would have spoken up...

Battlemage Nonetheless Book 3 EnvoyChapter 13

"Well my dear it has been almost two weeks, I don't believe they are coming back before the time limit," said Queen Morigan as she looked over at Rachel while she stood apart from the other women. Rachel was sitting and trying to look at ease, but it was an effort with all the various other Lady's and ladies in waiting around. All the various forms of nobility were hanging around the audience chamber making light conversation about nothing and gossiping. As Rachel tried to look like she...

Battlemage Book 7 the Sound of Sensual JusticeChapter 3

Once breakfast was finished Ariel wandered the guild grounds once again. She was trying to learn where everything was, and she passed various areas once again including the blacksmith shop where Nathan worked as a blacksmith's assistant. When they first arrived they found that the guild already had a blacksmith, but like the other members he went on missions because he could make more money doing that than he could having the members pay him to fix their weapons. So there was a need for...

Battlemage Book 4 the Red DragonChapter 9

The meeting with Rayne's parents, Aric and Brianna, went really well Matt thought. Matt met her father Aric, and if he thought the boys were larger than life, he was shocked at the father. His presence seemed huge to him. But strangely, other than a silver forelock, Aric didn't look like he could possibly be a day over thirty at best to Matt. To Matt Aric seemed far too quiet, friendly, and gentle to be the famous Battlemage he had heard of. Didn't they only love death and destruction...

Battlemage Nonetheless Book 4 ResolveChapter 7

Dusty arrived with his friends at the kingdom of Stelmore. The first thing they did on entering was to head straight for the castle to talk with King Roland about the attacks. Reaching the city gates it was obvious that the city was on high alert. On trying to enter the capital city they had to get off of their horses at the gate and lead them into the city. The guards then separated them, and two guards checked them one at a time. One held a serviceable pike on them as the other one...

Battlemage Nonetheless Book 4 ResolveChapter 10

A bloody and very upset Suzan and Anita made their way back to the palace just as the Sun was cresting over the horizon. They had already made the stop by Tabitha's mother's house the night before to inform her of what happened. Needless to say it wasn't something they wanted to do, but knew that they had to and it was something they owed the only real victim to pay the ultimate price. Even though Suzan felt she should tell her, Anita insisted that because her death was her fault she...

Rogers Life Book 2 Jacks legacy

Book 2 – Introduction I’ve made a big jump in time from the original Chapter 1, as I’ve decided to get my book published in three parts by an American Underground Publisher, who is keen to get my amazing life into print. In this story I’ll very briefly cover some of the period between Book 1 -Chapter 1 and the beginning of Book 2 (and there is still another whole book to go). Jack’s legacy My sister and I were ‘procured’ by Jack (who became such a loved part of our family and...

Battlemage Book 1 Beginnings and DiscoveriesChapter 6

"Ok, what the HELL just happened?" thought Aric. As he was filling the cart with wood, suddenly an extremely huge Brown Bear came out of the woods. He tried not to move, but the bear was looking for a fight. He was pretty sure he could take the bear, he was pretty strong and fast, but it would be close. The bear was easily twice his size in wide and almost twice his height standing up right. As he was trying to circle around to get a good position, his foot slipped into a gopher hole up...

The Legacy of Sir Nigel

My thanks to Constance Grant for her invaluable help in editing, and her constant support in my efforts. The Legacy of Sir Nigel by Janet Stickney [email protected] William, the reigning King, made a momentous decision. For two years he had been locked in a struggle with the Lord of the land as he tried, and failed, to wrest away the bounty of the land. In the fading, unwritten history of the people of the land, which was once no more than separate families coping...
