If you happened to walk through the front doors of Duncan & Hutchkins Family Law, the secretary sitting at the reception desk was probably the least of your worries. If you struck up a conversation as you waited for your appointment, you would learn that she was Rebecca Davis, a normal, single, attractive mother doing her very best to make ends meet.

The muddled comments added insult to injury, but long ago, Chloe had learned there was no point trying to argue. Rebecca Davis was the center of her own universe, and any attempt to reason with her was useless. Eventually it would just devolve into a screaming match. She focused on the cereal and put her mental blinders on.
"How are things going with Justin, anyway? Put the moves on him yet?"
Chloe's face flushed bright red. It was one of her mom's favourite tactics - if she thought you were giving her the cold shoulder, she would bring up something personal or embarrassing. Years ago, Lucy thought she had a crush on Justin and wrote about it on her laptop. Of course, her mom had snooped through it one day and found the file. It was one of her favourite topics to dredge up when she wanted to push her daughter's buttons.
"Moooooom. Stop. We're just friends." Chloe groaned with disdain.
"Hey, I'm just looking out for you, kiddo. I see those bags under your eyes. Don't wait until you're old and saggy like me."
Chloe fumed silently. More like old and plastic. For a few months, any extra money in the house had been spent on remedies, treatments and clothes to keep her mother looking youthful. And she wasn't even that old, just pushing on thirty-nine. Last month was particularly bad. When her credit card got denied at the orthodontist - an appointment that Chloe had to beg her to make - Chloe had to cover it from her own savings. Afterwards, she got screamed at for making her mother look bad. Everything was about keeping up appearances.

"Holy shit, dude. It lasted that long? It was a Monday night!"
Sandwich crumbs flew out of Justin's mouth as he talked. Lunch break was only half an hour, and Mrs. Gracelynn had kept him late after class again. Chloe snatched away one of his apple slices. Justin's mom always packed them for him.
"I know! Insane! Literally hours. I barely got any sleep."
"Have the rest if you want, then." he slid the bag over to her side of the table.
"You'll need the energy. I won't finish them in time, anyway."
Justin Wells was Chloe's best friend, and one of the few people in town that really understood the situation. When she started to realize something was unusual about her mom, she'd consulted the internet. There was a lot of helpful advice, and reading other peoples' stories justified her concerns, but there was only so much it could do to help with day-to-day life. When she needed an excuse to get out of the house or a sympathetic ear, he had always been there. Her long forgotten crush was a footnote at this point.
"Thanks, but I really shouldn't. They get stuck in my braces." Ignoring her own words, she popped another slice into her mouth. "She brought you up again, too."
"Oh, god. Again?" the response was muffled through a huge bite of sandwich.
"I told you, it's one of her favourites." Chloe refrained from telling him about the phallic gestures. It was already awkward enough if Justin needed to stop by her house. She could just feel her mother's gears turning, thinking of ways to keep Chloe "under control".
"The day she stops using you against me is the day she stops dying her hair."
Justin chuckled. Chloe shared a lot of her mom's features - sans the fillers and silicone - but it was hard to imagine Rebecca passing the auburn off as natural when it contrasted so harshly against Chloe's light blonde bun.
*CRASH!*
They both looked around for the source of the noise. Over by the food lineup, Jay Everett and Tobias Linden had just knocked somebody's tray out of their hands, spilling milk and chicken burger pieces everywhere. Tobias grappled the poor guy and held him still while Jay poured milk on his head. Somebody was already running to get a teacher.
"I can't believe they let those guys stay here," Justin commented, turning back to the table. "Aren't they, like, twenty now? How long can you get held back?"
Chloe smirked. "You'll be here when you're twenty-five if you keep annoying Gracelynn. And then I'll leave for college without you." Even with unforeseen expenses, like her braces, she had saved enough from her part-time library job to get out of the house once her senior year was over.

Before Justin could fire back, the bell rang for fourth period. His eyes went wide, and he stuffed the last bite of sandwich into his mouth.
