The mall was, as usual, mostly dead. It was about expected these days for it to be fairly less traveled than it had been in its prime. Though you still wandered into the pleasantly air conditioned mall and heard the faint music being piped in overhead. A few people walked by with bags, looking at the directory to see where to go next before they wandered off. You, figuring you'd see what was new, went over to look at it as well.
The thing was pretty standard. List of stores with a color coded map and not much else. Though your eye was caught by the heading of Gifts & More. There was now only one store listed under the entry. "Mage Mart". Sounded silly and almost like the game shop in town but you knew that couldn't be right. Your eyes went to the map and scanned, finding it towards the back on the first floor. That was usually the dingy, poorly lit spot that had the antique mall and not much else. Shrugging, you wander over to it.
As it was the further end of the mall, it was very quiet. No one else had ventured this far and most of the stores in this part were closed with leasing signs in the windows. Yet another sign of a dying mall! Though before you, in what had to have been an old Hot Topic, was the store. Mage Mart was on a simple banner hung over the doorway and the windows were fairly dim. You stepped over the threshold and looked around at the surprising amount of stuff inside.
There were shelves all the way up to the ceiling and a few tables covered in various seemingly random objects. Most were some occult looking things but some others looked more like gag gifts. Maybe this place really was some weird gift shop like Spencer's? You picked up a glass orb and turn it in your hand, trying to see what it could possibly be when a voice called out from the far end of the store where the register was.
"Afternoon! What can I help you with?" came a light, airy voice with a hint of cheekiness.
You walked over to the register and shrugged. The man behind the counter was tall and thin with white-blonde hair pulled back into a very orderly and perfect ponytail. He wore a simple polo shirt with a black apron with Mage Mart written on it and had a kind smile on his face. You could have sworn his ears were pointed but you didn't want to stare too much...
"Oh. Uh, I dunno. Just browsing," you shrug, looking back at the tables and shelves.
The man nodded, "Mm. Well, you're the first person in today so I think you deserve a treat! Special 50% off coupon on one of our best items!"
You looked back at him, brow raised, "What?"
"Yes! Our finest wishing powder. A tiny pinch in whatever you want and your wish comes true!" he said as he pulled out a small, squat glass bottle from seemingly thin air. "What do you say? Normally 50 bucks but for you? $25!"
Sighing, you shrug again. Not like you were even looking to buy anything but this thing at least looked cool and you could probably use it for a few pranks. Tell people it's magic and then laugh at their silly wishes or whatever. So, you pull out your wallet and pay for it. The man smiles, taking your money and pushing the bottle toward you. When you touch it you feel a slight tingle for just the briefest of moments... Though that had to be your imagination.
