Chapter three: Family.
Michael arrived home to find a stranger in his house. The man, middle-aged, balding, and dressed like a respectable businessman from the 1950s, was seated at the kitchen table, drinking a cup of tea, and apparently waiting for him. ‘We don’t object to what you’ve done, and we’re not going to stop you, but you really must learn to take a little more care. Did you think these ladies’ disappearance or odd behaviour wouldn’t be noticed? One of them’s married, for god’s sake! Did you think her husband wouldn’t wonder why she never came home?’
‘Well, I thought-‘ began Michael, but the man interrupted.
‘No you didn’t. You didn’t think at all. Do you know what would happen if people learned about us, about the Coldsteel? We would, quite rightly, be feared, and hunted down. We need to stay below the radar, Michael.’
The man finished the last of his tea and handed the cup to Jessica, who, Michael realised, had been there the whole time. Standing, the man turned his attention back to Michael.
‘We’ve cleaned up your messes to this point, but you only get one warning. If we need to clean up after you again, we’ll also take steps to ensure it doesn’t happen a third time. I hope I don’t need to spell out what those steps will be.’
At this point, Kat entered the room carrying the man’s jacket and hat, which he took and put on, before taking a card from his pocket and giving it to her. Obedient to some wordless instruction, Kat came over and handed the card to Michael.
‘That’s my address, Michael. Come visit some time if you need some advice on how to stay out of trouble.’
Peta held the door for him as he left the house, leaving Michael troubled and confused.

There was a big swimming pool, plenty of plants for shade, chairs and tables, but what immediately drew the attention was the people.
‘There’s got to be a hundred people here.’ said Michael, wonderingly.
‘Sure, about that number.’ said Gregory, stepping forward to meet him. ‘I’m big on family.’
‘They’re your family? All of them?’
Gregory nodded proudly. ‘I got the Coldsteel about forty years ago and I used it to nab myself a wife quick-smart. Got to having kids right away, and never stopped. Got a whole bunch of grand-kids now and even a couple of great-grand-kids.’
Michael stared, dumbfounded. Looking closer he noticed a few things that he hadn’t spotted at first. Many of the women present were noticeably pregnant and there were a lot of kids about, and about half the adults (male and female) wore a conspicuous yellow ribbon, bandanna or armband. Gregory noticed his interest and anticipated the question.
‘In-laws get the yellow. To tell them apart and make sure they know their place. My family are royalty and those who marry in treat them as such.’
Once you knew to look for it, it was obvious. Where groups sat around chatting, those without the identifying yellow had chairs, those with, sat on the ground or stood. Those watching or taking care of children wore the yellow. The two men behind the barbecue wore yellow. Gregory’s kids didn’t lift a finger if there was an in-law around to do it for them.
Michael sat with Gregory in a secluded corner, sipping a gin and tonic (brought to him by a man with a yellow armband). Chris stood nearby, content merely to wait as long as necessary – Michael had made sure of that.
‘You’ve got to think through all the consequences.’ Gregory was saying. ‘If you have someone come live with you, you’ve got to make sure their family knows where they are and is OK with it. You don’t want the police coming around looking for them. If you’ve got a suspicious number of people under the same roof, make sure the neighbours don’t go spreading rumours. Or just don’t have neighbours.’
Michael was still reeling.
‘Are there more of you? Us, I guess? How many people have these rings?’
‘Well, we’ve got a little
informal organisation set up. A little club house in the city where we meet sometimes. But there could be any number of people who have the Coldsteel and don’t draw attention to themselves.’
Gregory handed Michael another card, this one bearing an address in the city and the text ‘The Coldsteel Club. Members Only.’ Just then a young pregnant woman wearing a yellow scarf approached.
‘Ah, this is my wife, Whitney.’ said Gregory. Noting Michael’s look of confusion, he added ‘Not my first. I upgrade every few years.’
‘Darling,’ the woman said, apparently unaffected by her husband’s callous statement, ‘Portia and her young man are here.’
Gregory beamed. ‘Send them over.’
Whitney was soon replaced by two teenagers.
‘This is my daughter, Portia.’ said Greg. ‘She’ll be 18 next week, and that means it’s time for her to get married and start having kids of her own. Right sweety?’
The girl smiled warmly and put her arms around the boy.
‘Are you ready to be part of the family, kiddo?’ Gregory asked.
The boy grinned. ‘Yes sir.’

Michael returned home in a daze. Just the scale of Gregory’s little kingdom made his own experiments pale in comparison. How was it even possible to keep something like that under the radar? How many people would you have to manipulate, and how often? It was staggering. He’d made it sound so easy to avoid suspicion, but Michael wasn’t sure they were on the same level, or anything approaching it. His thoughts turned to the card in his pocket. The Coldsteel Club. Perhaps he could find someone there with some more practical advice. But not today. He’d seen enough for one day.
