said, "And just who might you be." I started to speak, but nothing was

is Joanna, she's been helping me today." My uncle gave a slight nod, and
that was it, nothing else was said and no questioning.
As he got up to leave the table, he turned to my Aunt and reminded her
they were ging out dancing that evening. He made a point of saying "I'll

get changed too. Aunt and I washed the dishes and went to the spare

The taxi didn't actually stop in front of my house, well my parents

only a hundred yards, probably less but to me it felt like I was outside
dressed as a woman (the clothes were wrong for a girl of my age) and had
marathon to walk. Probably walking too quickly, got to the house door,
turned the key and I remember leaning back against the door breathing a
sigh of relief. When I looked up, at the end of our hallway there used to

woman. I walked to our kitchen, made a cup of tea, went in to the front

sat down, crossed my stockinged legs and Joanna was born.
