I was sitting on my balcony enjoying some fall sunshine when I noticed my neighbor lying on her deck picking up some rays to renew her fading suntan. I, too, liked to read National Geographic, and I remembered reading the main story inside, which discussed the rising sea level.
I am a nerd computer software developer that has the good fortune to own my own company, so that doesn’t say much about the magazine’s clientele because I read all kinds of software and computer periodicals, but I still love the gorgeous perfect photography they capture from remote locations around the world.
I couldn’t help acquiring a positive opinion of the young lady, and I knew I needed to learn her name. Maybe she’s a schoolteacher, I guessed, but she appeared to be a couple of years younger than that unless she was just beginning her first teaching position. Before introducing myself, I took a couple of minutes to check her one-piece navy blue swimsuit and recognized it was pretty conservative for a woman her age that was in the privacy of her own patio. My eyes told me she didn’t need anything risqué to show her exquisite figure or look attractive.
The only way to get to know her was to just introduce myself, and I cleared my throat and said, ‘I’m Jonathan Davidson, your new neighbor,’ as I stood where our patios touched at the corners. There was a 42′ clear glass railing overlooking the swimming pool to prevent anyone from accidently falling to their certain death three floors below after having too many cocktails.
I saw her lovely face look up towards me, and as she started to rise she said, ‘Hi, Jonathan, I’m Lilly.’ She stretched her arm towards me and extended her right hand in a ‘high five’ movement for me to reach out over the glass railing and touch her hand with mine, and continued speaking, ‘It’s nice to meet you, Jonathan. You just moved in a few days ago, right?’
I agreed I was new, and that I just moved from Southern California the previous week after earning my MS degree from California Tech. I admitted I was pretty much settled, but I didn’t have any friends here yet. We talked about our careers, and I learned she was a human-interest journalist for what I called the ‘Daily Rag.’ She developed articles about people or issues that affect others in the community.
I explained that I was a software developer that created games and that I spent a fair amount of time traveling to electronics and computer conventions representing my company. I moved here, to Atlanta, because I like the Deep South and the Blue Ridge Mountains in particular, and I can work from anyplace I choose to call home, as long as there is a reasonably large airport with non-stop flights to many important cities. Amazingly, Lilly was native to Knoxville, TN, but her first opportunity after college came from the Atlanta Constitution, Atlanta’s premier newspaper.
I knew I really liked talking to this young woman, but when I invited her to go to Jessie’s, a little bar and grill, for a snack, she responded, ‘I’d really like to go with you, Jonathan, you seem nice, but I’m gay!’
She sure didn’t look gay to me, and I was nearly speechless when I responded, ‘Oh, my God, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to offend you.’ I wanted to continue and say, ‘I thought you said your name was Lilly, not Gay,’ but I like the adage that recommends, ‘When you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.’ Her deep blue eyes were sparkling as she seemed to be getting a thrill at my expense, but she wasn’t unkind or call me some hideous name like ‘homophobe.’
Lilly knew I was repentant, and she said she enjoyed our conversation, and that she’d be seeing me around. Expectantly, I asked, ‘Does this mean we can’t be friends? I’ve never known anyone that was gay before, but you certainly seem pretty cool.’ Even I couldn’t believe I said that as I waited for her reply.
‘Jonathan, we can be friends, and I’ll go to Jessie’s if it’s still all right with you as long as we can split the check. I just want you to be forewarned, there isn’t a chance for us to be more than friends.
