‘I was sitting on the porch in my overalls
As she packed her things to leave
She changed her mind, when she couldn’t change me.’

Hi there. Let me introduce myself. That way you will know what you have to work with as a reader.
My name is Jackson Hunter. Jack to most everyone, except my mom when I am in trouble. I got called Jackson a lot as I was growing up. You see I had a rather adventurous childhood. I am 24, a college grad, stand 6 feet 2, and weigh 205 or so.
The family Hunter, at least our part, consists of my parents, my two older brothers (James & William) and Alyssa, my baby sister. Don’t let her know I called her my baby sister, she hates that. I am actually younger than she is but I’m taller.
The family is not rich, but is fairly well to do. My parents are hard working people and have always lived off of their earnings. However, there are trust funds set up for college, start money, and investments. These funds are courtesy of my great, great, Grandfather James and his son William. They made their money in land speculation. They are who my brothers are named after.
After college I used some of my trust fund to buy a ranch close to Greer’s Ferry Lake in Arkansas. Okay, it was really a large farm (500 acres), with grazing rights on another 1000 acres of government land. I own it so I can call it a ranch if I want to. I started to raise beef cattle. Hired some people who knew what they were doing and I learned from them. I was working hard, making a little money, and having the time of my life. Everything was going great, and then I met Melody.
Melody Samuels was a reported for the largest T.V. station in the state. She came from Little Rock to do a feature on the troubles the ranchers and farmers were having with the extremely severe weather that winter. She had been told by people at the station, that I was the one to talk to. Our Sheriff introduced her and she asked if she could spend a few days with me. Melody wanted to learn about the problems we were faced with and what we were doing to overcome them. I wasn’t too excited about the prospect.
‘I’m not sure that’s a good idea, Miss Samuels,’ I told her. ‘Why don’t you stick to some interviews and go back home?’
Melody informed me, ‘I need to see the problems firsthand so I can make a better report. You can call me Melody.’
‘You better find someone else then. I’m not interested.’
‘Why not Jack? I was told that you have one of the bigger spreads and that your methods were the best. I need to get this story.’
‘I, I, I, that’s all you know. All you want is a story. Did you ever think about the families that may lose everything? Report about that.’ ‘WOW. What brought all that on?’ Melody was surprised at my outburst.
‘Sorry, I usually don’t preach until Sunday,’ I answered with a grin. I hesitated for a minute and said, ‘If I let you come with me you have to understand some things. When I go out to check on the cattle, sometimes I have to stay overnight. I have three or four small cabins set up just in case. The weather is going to be a stone bitch and I won’t be able to run you back to town if things get rough.’
‘I can handle that, Jack.’
‘Not in those shoes you can’t. If you want to go with me be at my place at 6:30 tomorrow morning, Sam. You need to get clothes for this weather though.’
‘Sam? My name is Melody.’
‘Not to me. You’re Sam and that’s it,’ I laughed at her.
Sam met me at my ranch house the next morning, with the proper clothes I might add. We jumped in my truck and started on our inspection. It was snowing lightly when we left the house. We were as far from the house as we could get and my truck just stopped. I’m a fair mechanic, but the problem was beyond me and it had started to snow much harder.
‘What are we going to do? Can we call for help?’ Sam wanted to know.
‘No service out here and the CB radio is on the fritz too,’ I told her. ‘We are going to have to hike to the closest cabin and wait for the weather to clear. It’s about 4 miles and we need to get going. This snow is getting heavier and the temperature will drop as the sun goes down.’
We made good time to the cabin. I have to hand it to Sam, she was a trooper. She didn’t whimper, complain, or bitch, she just walked. After three hours we got to the cabin as the temperature dropped steadily until it must have been in the low teens. If we had been in the Rockies, I would have called this snow storm a blizzard. A little aside here: Hiking cross country is not the same as hiking on roads or trails. We made very good time for the conditions and the terrain.
We stepped inside and Sam just sat down on the floor. She was about done in so I started a fire in the fireplace and pulled Sam over in front of it. I always had extra clothes in the cabins and I made her get out of her wet socks and jeans. Very nice body, of course I was just checking her for frostbite. Yeah, right. Even very cold, she looked lovely.
The cabins are always well stocked so I was able make some coffee. Our dinner was canned beef stew and some canned fruit. The cabin had a working CB radio and I was able to call the house and let them know where we were. Sometimes, I’m so smart, to think of well stocked cabins with radios. My foreman would be out to get us as soon as the weather let up.
We spent two nights at the cabin. During that time about all we had to do was sleep and talk. I know what you’re thinking, but there was no sex. We didn’t even kiss, but we did get to know and like each other. My foreman showed up for us after two nights. We were almost sorry to see him.
When we got Sam back to town she said to me, ‘We stayed two nights at your place. Come to Little Rock and I will return the favor. Here’s my card with my cell number. Call me.’
I may be a country boy, but I’m not some stupid hayseed. The call was place three days after she left, had to give her time to thaw out. She told me to pick her up at the station Friday, after she did the news. That was the start of our romance.
Little Rock is about 55 miles from my ranch, as the crow flies. Of course I’m no crow so I had to drive about 70 miles to get there. Still close enough that we got to spend 2 or 3 nights a week together. We became an item. Sam would come to the ranch and spend a long weekend and I would return the favor in Little Rock. Our time was filled with fun, passion and growing closer.
We were in bed in Sam’s apartment on a Saturday morning and her boss called. He told her that a big public relations firm in L.A. had seen some of her televised reports and were very impressed. They were offering her a position with them and they wanted an answer by next Tuesday. Sam was so excited but at the same time sad. If she took the job, she would have to move to California. It was a great opportunity but she loved her life here. Sam had grown to love me, the ranch, and our life together.
As much as I hated to admit it, I knew something like this would happen. It killed me, but Sam was too talented to stay in Arkansas. There were bigger things on the horizon for her, and I knew it. I was in love with her but I couldn’t hold her back.
‘What are you going to do Sam, turn it down? This is what you have been working for your whole career. The big time. You have to take the job.’
‘What about us? I don’t want to lose you, I just found you.’
‘I know it sounds hokey, but if we are meant to be together, we will be. I’m a great believer in karma,’ I told her. I don’t believe in all that crap, but I had to make it easier for Sam. Guess that’s what you do for s
omeone you love.
Sam called the P.R. firm on Monday and accepted the job. One week later she was gone, moved to the west coast. Our last week together was both wonderful and at the same time heartbreaking. During that week Sam tried numerous times to get me to move with her. She argued that my foreman was already handling the day to day operation of my ranch. I could fly back two or three times a month to check up on things.
‘I’m a rancher Sam. Good or bad that’s what I have decided to do with my life. I wouldn’t fit in out there. What kind of work could I do? No, I’ll stay in my world and visit yours’. That is if you want me to.’
She said, ‘Of course I want you to visit. Not just for a weekend though. Come and visit for two weeks or a month.’
I agreed to come to visit when she got settled. That’s what I did. I would fly to California every two months and stay for 2 to 3 weeks at a time. This went on for a year and a half. Then Sam got a big promotion.
Sam didn’t have as much time to spend with me after the promotion. She had to work late several nights until 11:00 or so, not every night, but at least once or twice a week. If we had been living together it wouldn’t have been a problem, but I was only there for 7 to 10 days, so it was a big deal. It was always some show or movie opening that cut in to our time. I was of course invited to take her to these affairs and for some of them I did don a tux and join her. I wasn’t really happy with all this Hollywood stuff but went along because it was Sam’s job and she needed my support not my criticisms.
As I said, I was only with Sam for 7 to 10 days every two months or so. All of the late nights at work, the parties, and the PR functions were seriously cutting into our time together. I loved Sam and guess I would have gone on this way for a long time. That is, until the big gala for a major motion picture studio. It was a party to celebrate a movie they had just released, that was a box office smash.
Sam asked me to go to the party with her and I reminded her that it was going to be one of my last two nights in town. I told her I wouldn’t be back for three months or so, things were happening at the ranch that needed my presence.
‘Can we skip this one Sam? I would like for just the two of us to spend my couple of night together.’
‘You make it sound like we will never see each other again. Jack, I can’t miss this one. Our company, mostly me, was responsible for all the promotional ads that helped make the movie a financial success. I really need to be there. Please Jack, come with me,’ she pleaded with me.
I took a cup of coffee and went out to the patio to think. When Sam had gotten this job offer, I had supported her. I didn’t want her to go to California, but I knew it was important to her. If I had held her back, she would have stayed in Little Rock for me. She also would have come to resent me, so I encouraged her to take the job. I couldn’t ask her to do less than her best at her work. She needed my support again, not me pouting.
As I came back into the house, Sam was on the phone. She was talking to her boss, trying to get out of going to this big party. I motioned to her to put him on hold.
‘Sam, this is very important for you, so let’s go to the party. Tell your boss we will be there.’
She told her boss, hung up, and ran to me. Sam jumped into my arms and kissed me. She suggested that since we had 3 hours before we had to leave that we take a long shower together.
Cleanliness is next to Godliness, at least that’s what I was taught at home. I thought it was a wonderful idea. It was a good thing we had the 3 hours, we took a very long shower. Boy, were we clean!
I’m not into fashion and stuff, but I must tell you how Sam looked. She was absolutely stunning. Her hair was upswept and her makeup was perfect. The dress was a sexy but classy floor length lavender gown. It showed a lot of cleavage both front and back. Obviously she wasn’t wearing a bra. If she couldn’t have launched a thousand ships, then the Greeks were all gay.
We arrived at the big deal and Sam was immediately whisked off by her boss to meet some big shots with the studio. It left me on my own, so I found one of the bars. I stood at the bar for about 50 minutes. Taking my second drink with me, I started to look for Sam, I wasn’t a happy camper. I understood she had to make nice with the big wigs, but that was no excuse to leave me alone for almost an hour.
I found Sam outside on the patio with her boss and some other man. I walked up behind the group. Apparently she was being introduced to him. I think his name was Bishop. He took her hand and pulled her close to him, kissed her on the cheek and ran his hand down and fondled her rear. She pulled away from him, smiled at him, lightly slapped his hand and told him to behave. In my mind it wasn’t enough of a response from her and at any other time and place I would have knocked him on his ass.
Her boss noticed me then and said, ‘Oh shit. Melody behind you.’
Sam turned and smiled at me uncertainly. Either she didn’t know how much I had seen or she didn’t know how I would respond or maybe both. It was obvious that she knew I wouldn’t approve.
I took the three steps to Sam and told her, ‘I’m leaving. You stay and enjoy your friends and the party.’
‘Jack wait, let me talk to you. You don’t have to go, stay with me please.’ I just shook my head at her and started to leave.
As I turned to leave, this guy Bishop put his hand on my arm. ‘Young man you must stay, we don’t want to upset our Melody,’ he ordered me.
‘Mister, I suggest you take your hand off me.’ I waited about five seconds and said, ‘I won’t tell you again, get your hand off me.’
Bishop must have seen the threat in my eyes. He dropped his hand, turned to Sam and said, ‘Melody, who is this young man?’
I was still hot and looking for a fight. Looking at Sam I told her again, ‘I’m leaving. If I don’t there will be a scene. I won’t take anymore of this crap. Good bye Sam.’
‘Jack wait, please. Let me talk to Mr. Bishop and explain. Then we can talk and I can find out what’s bothering you.’
‘This isn’t the place and you don’t have the time for me. If you did, you wouldn’t have left me alone for almost an hour. Any explanations should be to me about Bishop and the others. I should be the one that counts. I’m going Sam, it’s the best thing to do.’
‘Alright, I’ll see you back at my place. I should be home around midnight,’ Sam told me. She looked a little guilty, maybe my crack about being alone for an hour had hit home.
‘No Sam, I’m going back to the ranch. I can’t stay here anymore, not even for you.’
Sam was stunned. She tried to get me to wait for her, but I had decided to go back where I belonged. I loved Sam, but I couldn’t live in the world she had made for herself. Sometimes, love just isn’t enough.
I might have overlooked the late nights at work, the parties and gala affairs, but I couldn’t get past the hugs, kisses, and fondling that was going on. I know it’s silly but I felt that she was cheating on our relationship. These affectionate people and their actions wouldn’t pass the boyfriend test. Yeah I know we weren’t engaged or married, but when did logic ever mean anything when it came to being in love.
Checking with the airlines, I found I couldn’t get a flight until early tomorrow. I packed my bags to go to a hotel tonight. I didn’t want to stay at Sam’s place. Sam came rushing through the door just as I was calling a cab.
‘What are you doing? Where are you going?’ She questioned me. ‘You left in such a hurry I couldn’t catch up with you. I saw your cab pull away but couldn’t stop you.’
‘Told you Sam, I am going back to the ranch.’
‘I thought you meant you were going home after your visit, not tonight. You can’t get a flight until tomorrow anyway, stay here tonight,’ she pleaded with me.
‘
I’m going now, I can’t stay here with you. If I stay here we will just argue and maybe destroy the good memories we have. I have to go, Sam.’
‘Okay, I’ll call you next week and we can plan things to do on our next visit. The big push is over at work and we can have more time together.’
I was going to tell her I wasn’t coming back, but chickened out. That was something that was going to make her cry and I didn’t want to face that. It would also turn into a big argument and I definitely didn’t want to go through that tonight. I would probably say things that I shouldn’t. Sam hugged me very tight and kissed my cheek as she said good bye. The last thing I heard as I closed the door was, ‘I love you Jack.’
It was already 1:30 and my plane was to take off at 5:30 so I just went to the airport. I could wait there just as easy as at a hotel, besides I wasn’t going to sleep anyway. I arrived at the ranch the next afternoon and was soon back in the swing of being a rancher. The work help keep my mind off the situation with Sam. The nights by myself were tough.
Sam called my cell the day after I got home. I saw it was her and let it go to voice mail. I did the same thing the next six or seven times she called. Okay, so I’m a coward. I just didn’t want to take the final step and break up with her. I didn’t have the guts to talk to her as it was not going to be pleasant.
About the fifth day home, the phone at my house rang about 7:30 in the evening. If I had caller I.D., I never would have answered it. It was Sam. I guess the running away from the situation was over. After saying hello, how are you and how is everyone at the ranch, the real questions started. Why haven’t you called me? Did you get my messages? Don’t you owe me the courtesy of returning my calls? She was pissed, and I have to admit rightfully so. I had been a total ass by not calling her. What can I say? I was just putting off the inevitable.
Then Sam started telling me about her plans for my next visit. I interrupted her before she got too far into the plans.
‘Sam, I’m not coming back to California,’ I told her.
Dead silence, and then a tearful, Why?’
‘I can’t live like you do. Not that it’s wrong, it’s just wrong for me. I want to spend time with you, not with a bunch of movers and shakers. ‘I love you, but you can’t change me. I’m what I want to be and I’m happy with my life. Not as happy as I would be with you in it, but I’ll just have to live with that.’
‘Why the sudden decision? I thought we were having a good time and cared for each other,’ she said.
‘Sam I do care for you, but it came to a head at the last party. I saw Bishop kiss you, hug you, and put his hand on your ass. You just laughed it off, like it was nothing. Maybe it was nothing to you, but it was to me. I know we aren’t married or even engaged, but you were my woman and that didn’t set right with me.’
‘How would you suggest I handle it Jack? Should I have slapped the hell out of him? That would have a great effect on my job,’ she said in her defense. ‘It doesn’t mean anything Jack. People in this business are always hugging and kissing, it’s like shaking hands in Arkansas. It’s not even considered sexual. Are you jealous?’
‘I’m not jealous Sam, I’m pissed off. You run off and leave me for almost an hour. I went to your party for you and you ran off and left me. You don’t have to hold my hand all the time, but you showed a lack of concern by leaving me alone for that long. Then, when I come to find you, you’re letting some asshole grab your ass and get away with it.’ I felt the anger and disappointment start to surface. ‘Jack again it means nothing. The parties and events are part of my job. I can’t pick and choose what I’m supposed to be doing. I can’t ignore the socializing, it’s also a part of my job. I can’t change my job.’
‘I know Sam. Good bye, I love you,’ I said and hung up. It wasn’t jealousy, I just didn’t like other men touching my woman. I couldn’t live with the situation in California and it wasn’t acceptable to me. Sam had changed after her promotion. She was more ‘Hollywood’ now and I didn’t like that either.
