“Now, now. You know you have school in an hour. Get your tushy up,” Mom says, pulling away my blankets. Her dark turquoise eyes are drawn to the wet pool that is between my legs. Disappointment and shame come over her face. She blows on her the bangs of her shoulder-length crimson locks and runs her hands through them in annoyance. “Oh, Cliff. Why are you still wetting your bed at this day and age.”
“It was just an accident. I had a strange dream and woke up like this.” I shielded the blankets over my shame.
“Well, come on now. Let’s get those pants off mister so I can throw it into the wash. Seriously, Cliff. You shouldn’t drink so much water before bed.”

I worry about you sometimes, I really do.” Mom stares with concern over my damp boxer briefs. Her fingers trace the dampness and pick out the gloopy mess to examine carefully.
“Enough,” I brushed her off and walked towards the shower, slightly annoyed over a conversation I had time and time again. She is always nagging.
“After you take a shower, get your tushy downstairs so we can drive to Doctor Hollis!” Mom hollers at my back as I leave my room, my face still crimson over the fact that I wet myself in my age.
The sound of the shower was on as I walked the corridors of the house towards the bathroom. The door of the bathroom was left open. There was steam pouring up from the drawn shower curtain, which left fog on the mirror. I entered and pulled the curtain open to reveal the naked body of my older sister. After our family of three ate breakfast, Sophia left for her job as a paper pusher at the Yellowfield Institute. Meanwhile, The Moms and I drove to Dr. Hollis’ office, where Mom had called in to say we were coming in.
The little town of Yellowfield was a small secluded colony located in an undisclosed place in Middle America. After the devastation of what was known as “The Happening”, Yellowfield was one of the first settlements to pop up, keeping the flame of civilization alive.
In order to survive, the little town had its rules. Silicon circuitry and other ancient technology were strictly forbidden by the use of civilian populations unless they had permits. Outsiders were turned away. Men, after turning 20, would be sent to the mines, manning the outer posts or operating the power stations, though some exceptions were made for exceptional people like Dr. Hollis or some of the elders at the Institute. At the same time, women stayed inside the town, taking care of the children and running various administrative and teaching jobs.
The town was powered by nuclear and thermal generators which supplied the homes with heating and electricity. Still, because of the draconian laws of Yellowfield, the settlement was stuck in a perpetual post-WW2 era technology frame. The only exception being transportation which was powered by plug-in batteries, such as mom's car, and other devices mostly used as timesaving devices by licenses issued by the Yellowfield Institute (the current government that controls the colony).
Things were all not bad. The town had clean running water and maintain a reliable food supply thanks to the Yellowfield Farming Commission, the small body of AI operated workers that run the off-world farms.
My eyes gaze over the “sky", staring wistfully into the “clouds.” Truthfully, it was a steel dome that was lined with paneling that mimics the sky. Or at least… the bright clear sky of the past. The real sky, out there, was now was covered in ash and soot. I still yearned to go past it someday and actually see it.
I should count myself lucky to be among the survivors of the ruins of Earth. But deep inside, I wished something exciting would happen to this little town.
