"It's your turn, Mom," Sean said as he waited for his mother, Amelia, to roll the dice.
"Are you sure about these rules, Sean?" Amelia asked with slight frown as she looked down at the octogonal playing board. It was the strangest board game she'd ever seen and Amelia couldn't help but wonder where her son had found it. It looked like an antique.
"Yes, Mom," Sean assured her with a sigh of frustration. At least I think I am, Sean admending silently. The rule card for the game read like badly translated DVD instructions but after a few read throughs, Sean was pretty sure he understood how the game worked.
"Are you sure?" Rachel asked pointedly, scowling at him dubiously from across the table. "Where did you find this game anyway?"
"I... I borrowed it from a friend at school," Sean lied. I can't tell them where I really got it, he thought to himself.

Sean had never seen the store before. Which was odd considering that he walked down this street every day going home from school. But he couldn't remember ever seeing this store front before... not that he could remember what he thought had been there but the storefront with bright banners and windows full of curios seemed strangely unfamiliar to him. Shrugging to himself, Sean decided to enter the store.
The overpowering smell in incense caused him to blink in confusion as he entered the dimly lit store, the discordant notes of some remotely asian music hitting his ears as he glanced around the overcrowded shelves. It's like four stores crammed into one, Sean marvelled as he looked from one stacked shelf to another. There was so much stuff crammed onto the shelves, piled on the floor, or seemily haphazardly thrown in the corner that his mind couldn't focus on any one thing. He was so overwhelmed looking through the shelves that he didn't notice the proprietor of the store until he spoke to him.
"Can I help you find anything, young master?" The man asked in a deep purring voice, his sudden appearance causing Sean to jump in surprise.
"Wha... uh, no," Sean stammered in shock, not sure how the old man had silently sidled up to him amongst all the junk in the shop. "I'm... I'm just browsing," he assured the shop keeper.
"I see," the old man nodded sagely, looking Sean up and down carefully as if weighing him in his mind. "I see," the old man repeated before reaching out and plucking a narrow wooden box off of a shelf without even glancing at it. "This," the old shopkeeper said, "this is what you want. No need to browse further," he assured Sean as he pushed the wooden box into his hands.
"What... what is it?" Sean asked in confusion, turning the box over in his hands, noting the faded gilt script that covered the box, his eyes working slowly to decipher the faint words. The Genie's Orb? What's that? Sean wondered, opening the box slightly. A board game? Why would I want an old board game? Sean wondered even an answer came unbidden into his mind, his memory going back to the interminable Monopoly or Risk games that his mom was now insisting the whole family play every Thursday night. Ever since Dad left she's been all about family bonding, Sean mused. Maybe this game will be more interesting than those others, Sean reasoned, fishing around in his pockets for his wallet.

That had been last Friday and Sean had brought the game home and tucked it into his closet, forgetting all about it until on Monday as he headed home from school. He was walking his normal route home when he suddenly stopped in his tracks, staring in dumbfounded shock at an empty and obviously long abandoned store. Looking up and down the street, he was sure this was the right place, that only three days ago, there'd been that strange curio shop right here. It couldn't have been here... but he knew it had been.
Sean found himself troubled by the mysteriously disappearing store, wondering if he possibly could have been mistaken or if the store really had just vanished, leaving an empty store front behind. It couldn't be, he rationalized, assuring himself that he had been mistaken about the shop's location but the doubt lingered, nagging at him until tonight when his mom had announced it was time for family game night.
"I've got a new game," Sean found himself asserting as he rushed up the stairs to retrieve the wooden box. He didn't understand why it seemed suddenly so important that they play this particular game tonight, but Sean gently insisted that they had too. After a few brief complaints, both his mother and sister had agreed and Sean had sat down to quickly read the game instructions.
"So just roll the dice, Mom," Sean gently insisted, his eyes tracing over the black and white squares the outlined the octogon of the board. Every fifth square was covered in gilded, with curly arabesque script declaiming Genie's Orb. If Sean was reading the instructions correctly, that meant that whomever landed on those squares had to press the silver orb in the middle of the board and wait for their wish to be granted. How this was supposed to happen, Sean didn't really understand but it intrigued him. How could a board game grant wishes? It must be like a magic 8 ball, he thought to himself, and it just gives generic vague answers.
There were also red squares arranged randomly across the board, the curly arabesque script labelling them Barzakh. If a player landed on one of those squares, they had to move their marker into the red zone around the silver orb for a number of turns determined by what square they landed on. Kinda like Jail in Monopoly, Sean thought to himself as he glanced at the rules once more. Once a player was in Barzakh they had to do whatever the person in the lead demanded of them.
"Okay, here we go," Amelia sighed, tossing the dice onto the wooden board. "But if this game isn't any good after a few rounds, I want to play Monopoly," she warned Sean as she moved her piece three spaces on the board and reading the message there. "Sand storm. Wait two turns," she reads with a skeptical frown.
"My turn," Rachel announced, picking up the dice and tossing them, her hand automatically reaching up to brush a lock of her redhair back behind her ear. "Four," she said, moving her piece to one of the gilt squares. "Your camel dies, move back one space." She read, sliding her piece back one spot. "Here you go, Sean," she says, leaning forward to hand the dice to her brother. As she leans forward, her light blue top gaps open slightly, treating Sean to the briefest glimpse of her cleavage.
"Thanks,"Sean says, quickly averting his eyes as he feels a slight guilty flush color his cheeks. He'd always found his sister attractive, in fact he found both the women in his family attractive, a fact that tormented him some nights more than others. Pushing his taboo thoughts aside, Sean rolled the dice. "Five," he announced pleased, moving his marker to the nearest gilt square.
"Oh, so you get a wish now," Amelia remarked, curious to see how this game worked.
"I guess so," Sean shrugged, placing his hand on the strange silver orb in the middle of the board. Now what should I wish for? He wondered to himself.
