"Are you absolutely sure about this idea Fury?" asked a concerned Reed Richards. That he didn't only find friends with this commentar in this room was clear to him but as always he didn't care.
"If you have a better idea, just say it Richards. I'm all ears." The head of SHIELD replied to the scientist, but the scientist failed to answer. Also the other scientists and heroes in the room looked rather insecure in front of them until finally Tony Stark took the floor.
"I don't want to offend him but how do we know he's not one of them?"
"Because we, and by that I mean everyone here in the room, have done our own tests. And because we don't have another option anymore! Your detector didn't prove to be very efficient, Tony! I'd also like to repeat the question again. Does anyone have another idea?"
"No! We don't have one. So now please explain your plan Fury." Said Steve Rogers and made sure that this pointless discussion finally ended. He looked at the end of the table where he just got a grateful look. There sat perhaps the only hope of the earth. Fury had chosen well in the eyes of the Captain. Everyone here in the room knew exactly what this man was capable of. In combination with the Machine his power was almost limitless.
"Thank you captain. Good. Here are the facts. I know they should be known to everyone but I want to mention them again. The Skrull are back. Neither the scanners in orbit nor those on earth have alerted us yet. We all know what happened last time they visited our planet. The ensuing battle almost destroyed the Earth and almost completely destroyed the trust in the superheroes." As Fury said, he could see Steve clenching his fist.
It was these events that had hit him extremely hard. After all, the Skrull had selected him and used a shapeshifted Skrull that looked like Steve to betray the world and many people still distrusted him today. If anyone knew how dangerous the Skrulls were, it was him. And that was one of the reasons why it was so important for Cpt. America that this secret invasion would not happen again.
"Hey short question! Why isn't Cpt. Marvel actually here? After all, she is our Skrull expert, isn't she?" Johnny Storm asked in the round and Fury looked at the young Hotshot angrily.
"Because she has to deal with more important things right now." Before Johnny could ask the question, Fury smiled and nodded. "What is more important than the earth? Quite simple. Galactus is on his way to this corner of the universe. She's on her way with the Guardians to change his course. It brings us very little if we defeat the Skrull and then destroy this miserable crap thing on our planet. May I continue now?"
After a short break he continued. "A week ago there was an incident in the Bahamas. We discovered 3 Skrull invaders who probably tried to approach one of us during a festival. Wanda Maximoff was probably the target of the three aliens. We can speak of luck that she succeeded in unmasking the attackers before it was too late. We could push the skrull away but so far we don't know exactly where they went. And since our other possibilities have not yet produced any successes, we have to choose this way. So now my question to you... Do you dare to do that?" asked Fury and looked now also at the end of the table, like all the others also.
Xavier put his chin on his hand and bent forward slightly. The older bald man in his wheelchair might look a little out of place in the midst of all these heroes, but something about him radiated a tremendous calmness. At his side stood 2 of his best fighters. Cyclops and Jean Grey had come on board to protect the professor. Even though most of the X-Men tried to stay out of the business, everyone in the room had at least a rough idea of what they were capable of.
"Please don't worry, ladies and gentlemen. If I have understood you correctly, you wish that I scan every inhabitant of this planet and track down possible aliens? Did I understand that correctly?" asked Xavier and his own calm worked like an aura on the others in the room.
"And you can really do that?" asked a worried looking Captain America. The thought that a single being should be able to do such an act was as impressive as it was terrifying.
"Thank you so much for worrying about me. However, they are groundless. There is no danger to me. It is not a process in which I will control the thoughts of each being exactly, but only take a rough look into their minds to find out if they are humans or not. And while I'm there Jean and Scott will take care of me. No Skrull will get past Jean now that she knows what to look for. But may I ask how Miss Maximoff is doing? The information about the incident itself has been relatively limited."
"She is in the infirmary of this ship. The drug the Skrull used to escape has not yet been fully analyzed. We found a 2nd gas grenade that hasn't detonated yet. Our researchers will analyze it during the course of the day and then produce an antidote. Miss Maximoff is again master of her senses as well as responsive, but she does not yet have her powers completely under control".
"How are normal people? Were they also affected by the gas?" Tony asked the group and Fury nodded thoughtfully.
"Yes, but they didn't have the willpower of a Scarlet Witch. I have to admit that this kind of attack doesn't fit with the previous Skrull scheme but it was very effective in any case. But we are running out of time. Do all people agree with the plan? If so, I would ask the professor to get to work. „
Only an hour later, the X-Men accompany their leader in the underground chambers of the Academy. After both Jean and Xavier had scanned his people, they were sure that the Skrull hadn't penetrated the higher circle of the X-Men yet. However, this didn't mean that the entire Academy was free of their influence.
Wolverine, Storm, Jean, Scott, Rouge and Kitty accompanied him on his way to Cerebro and discussed the current situation. Especially Logan was as always quite irascible and little by little all but Jean and Scott broke away from the group to wait in different key positions. If someone would attack the professor during this complicated process it could be dangerous for him. While Jean and Scott waited outside the door, the professor continued the small bridge and activated the machine.
He had done this before and knew exactly what to do. He concentrated on every living being within his sphere of influence and searched the innumerable minds for clues to alien thought patterns. He was very anxious to make this contact as superficial as possible. After all, he personally regarded the private sphere as one of man's highest goods. Ironically, the most powerful telepath in the world thought so. But perhaps it was just the power he had over others that had so consolidated his moral compass.
But just as his consciousness expanded toward the helicarrier, he felt something strange there. Immediately his suspicion was aroused and so he focused his mind, reinforced by the machine, on this place.
But what he felt on board the Helicarrier was something completely unexpected. It was as if he was falling into an ocean of lust and passion. His mind was literally flooded. Panicked and frightened Charles tried to withdraw from the ghosts of the crew to fathom what could have happened there but it was hard for him to resist all these sensations. The bridge crew who were doing it together in the middle of the bridge or the poor mechanic who had just been raped by 20 of her colleagues. Everywhere on the ship there was only sex, greed and lust. When Charles left the room, his bodyguards joined him. "Apparently Wanda suffered a magical attack in a coma and changed the reality so much that the bomb went off. The gas has spread all over the ship and only a few areas are safe. Professor, what do we do now" asked Jean.
"I want you to inform the Fantastic Four immediately. Doctor Richards will surely be able to neutralize the gas quickly. And inform the Avengers that there are only 3 skulls. They're not an invasion force, they crashed on the planet. It is not an attack. That's what you should take care of. You're in Boston right now."
"And what are we going to do" asked Scott.
"We? We'll rest and make sure the final exams go well tomorrow. After all, we are not responsible for that. We should not burden ourselves more than necessary. We have helped you. We cannot do more at the moment. But Scott. I ask you to increase the security of the area. Just in case, yes?"
"Professor, of course. I'll take care of it right away," he said as he turned a corner and took Wolverine and Kitty with him. Meanwhile Charles followed Jean through the corridors.
