The first time she noticed anything Heather had just been amused. She didn't know about Cole's ex yet, who she was and what she looked like. Heather and Cole had been dating for a while and that day was the first time he took her to his place. Heather reached a door and peeked inside. It was the bedroom. There was a giant black king size bed in the middle and an impressively big wardrobe on the left, opposite to the large glass wall with a door that led to a spacious balcony. Cole's apartment was located on a hill in the outskirts of the city and from the bedroom window Heather could see the valley glittering with the city lights. This place was just as clean and minimalist as the rest of the apartment. And maybe that's why the only decorative element in the room attracted so much attention. On the wall above the bed was something that reminded Heather of the deer antlers and other hunting trophies her dad had hanging on the wall of his hunting cabin in the woods. The longer she looked at it, it became more obvious that that was what this strange object was trying to mimic - a hunting trophy. Just instead of antlers it was... a bra?! Screwed on through its center part onto a black piece of wood, was a huge white lace bra. The straps and the band had been reinforced with wire and had been bent forward to make them look like antlers, while the cups gave the impression of some sort of skull. Although it was a really weird thing to find on a wall, it was aesthetically so well done that it looked almost artsy. So she just chuckled at this unusual but witty idea and silently left the bedroom before Cole would catch her snooping around.
Back in the living room she looked through the bookshelves and checked the titles of the books – lot's of interior design and architecture books. She found an old family picture in a white minimalist frame, she recognized Cole's face in an older man, who was probably his dad. There was a green plant in the corner, adding a little color to the otherwise entirely black and white room. Cole and Heather sat his couch and talked and laughed a lot. Something inside Heather wanted to ask him about those sculptures in the bed- and the living room, but for some reason she waved those questions away. It was when Cole left for the bathroom and she was sitting there with her empty cocktail in her hand, when she slowly got up and strolled into the kitchen. All she wanted was something to drink, of course, but that didn't keep her from snooping around a little more. The kitchen was just as minimalist and sterile as the rest of the place. When Cole came back Heather was sitting with her empty glass on the couch again, pretending she hadn't moved since he left. But now she felt the urge to ask a few questions and the conversation wouldn't feel as light and fun as before until she got those questions out. Cole had told her once, that he had been married for some time and that his wife was gone. He had said that in a sad tone, that made her wondering what "gone" stood for, but she didn't want to dig around in risky territory. Just like back then, it didn't feel like the right moment to ask such delicate questions. "What happend to your wife?" She heard herself say out of the blue.
Cole wasn't upset about her question. He deliberately told her the whole story. How they met on the airport and shared the last taxi into town just to find out they were heading to the same job interview. They both got the job.
