Karen Lee was in her early thirties, divorced, unattached, no kids, living in a cheap apartment, and pretty much resigned to her life being the way it was. She had dark brown shoulder-length hair that she generally kept tied up in a bun at the back of her neck, she was about 5'4" tall, not exactly plump, but with a reasonably curvy figure - curves you could hold on to. Of course over the past few years she'd noticed a tendency for things to start moving 'south', especially her double-D cup breasts. Mostly that had started happening after the divorce, along with the occasional grey hair.
Her ex had been a philandering bastard, but of course it was all Karen's fault. She had not been interested in him, he said, she had never wanted sex, he said. Karen couldn't exactly argue with him on that point: she did try to enjoy it when he was lying on top of her, grunting and ramming his _thing _into her. But she always felt like Sally Albright sitting in Katz's Delicatessen when she made the noises he seemed to like and moved her hips in the way he seemed to want. It was just lucky, she supposed, that he hadn't wanted kids either, or she would have been stuck with him.
He had become less and less subtle in his affairs, though and the last straw was when she found him in bed with another woman when she came home from a visit to her mother's. It wasn't like he hadn't known she was on the way, or anything, she'd rung him earlier to let him know. He hadn't answered, so she'd left a message. He hadn't been there at the train station to pick her up and so she'd used the last of her cash to get a taxi home, only to find her husband in bed with another woman, much younger and prettier than herself. She'd stormed out and got back in the taxi that hadn't left yet, gone back to the station and back to her mother's without saying a word.
Unfortunately, Karen's mother wasn't exactly well, and while Karen was only too happy to look after her, it meant she needed a job. Until then, she'd relied on her husband for her income, but now that was cut off. She was also horrified to learn, a couple of weeks after leaving him, that he was suing her for divorce. And that divorces were expensive. She was left with nothing. Her mother tried to help out but her illness just got worse and less than a year after Karen's divorce became final, her mother died. Funerals were expensive too, it seemed, and Karen was forced to sell her mother's house in order to pay to have the old woman buried next to her husband, Karen's father.
And so Karen found herself working at the only job she was really qualified for: vacuuming floors, making beds and cleaning toilets in one of the towns swankier hotels. The pay wasn't brilliant, the hours were okay, and the work was pretty disgusting when it all came down to it. Sometimes she wondered just exactly what sort of things people got up to in the hotel rooms to be able to get them into such a state.
Karen pushed her trolley along the corridor, noting that several of the rooms had "Do Not Disturb" signs on the doors. She paused outside one room, stooped to pick up a piece of paper and the unmistakeable sounds of a man and woman having sex drifted out to her. She blushed and moved on quickly. The next door did not have a "Do Not Disturb" sign. Okay, good. She got paid a bonus for the number of rooms she was able to clean, and so far this morning she'd managed only two. She tapped on the door. No answer. Good. Her pass-key was in her pocket and she slipped it out and into the lock. The lock buzzed and she opened the door.
"Maid service?" Protocol, that was. Always announce who you are. She was about to head further into the room when she noticed the bathroom fan was running which meant the light was on. Possibly left on by an inconsiderate guest?
No... The bathroom was occupied! A firm but definitely female voice called out "Go ahead, I'll be out in a moment..."
Karen hesitated. She should really apologise and come back later, but the room's occupant had said to go ahead. But that presented another problem: She was supposed to start with the bathroom...
