"Have you heard from Omar lately?" Mara asked as she began toweling off.
"No," Tomas answered. "I've sent him most of the pictures I took of you and him when were in Kenya, and I sent him confirmation that you were definitely pregnant. But, I've heard nothing in reply."
"Hm," Mara said, drying her hair. "I suppose he's busy." She was referring to the fact that Omar was 'busy' being the husband of two other women back in Zambia (Omar was Muslim), and the father of nine other c***dren between them! So 'busy' was likely an overstatement! Still, she and Tomas had hoped to remain in some sort of contact with Omar. He had said he wanted to be kept informed of the progress of Mara's pregnancy (though in all honesty, it had never been realistic to expect him to be all that involved with this new baby, due to the distance between Zambia and Europe. Still, after the truly amazing time Mara and Omar had had together during the nearly twoo weeks she and Tomas had spent in Kenya with him, she hoped that some sort of on-going contact could be maintained between them).
"Do you miss Omar?" Tomas asked Mara as she was finishing drying off.
"I do," came here simple, but honest reply. She studied her husbands face in the reflection of the large mirror, and her answer didn't seem to have upset him. "Does that bother you, Tomas?"
"No," he replied instantly. "Not at all. I was just wondering."
Mara turned around and put her arms around her husband and drew him closer and kissed him, gently, but with sincerity, and not out of some sense of wifely obligation, or guilt.
Tomas knelt down on the floor in front of Mara and kissed her pregnant belly, more than once, with a tenderness that was truly moving, and very obviously sincere. Seeing this made Mara happy. She was glad that Tomas didn't resent her for having Omar's baby (as she had worried he might after getting home again)! It was too late for regret, or resentment now anyway. She was pregnant, and abortion was strictly out of the question for both of them being Catholic!
But even if they had not been Catholic, Mara wanted the baby, and an African-fathered baby, so very much! She was grateful for having a husband like Tomas, who was so willing (and seemingly eager) for her to have such a baby as well!
"Your going to be the most beautiful mother in the world," Tomas said, still kneeling on the floor in front of Mara.
"And you are going to an excellent father, as well!" Mara replied, smiling down at her husband.
"I'm going to work SO hard in being that!" He said. "I'll love that baby just as much as I can, even though I'm not it's biological father!" His conviction was palpable.
"I know you will, Tomas," Mara said, feeling excited, and happy, and at peace. "That's what I love about you! Your a good man, and a good husband to me. I'm really very lucky to have you!"
"That's nice to hear you say that, Mara; and I will always love you, and the baby, forever."
Tomas leaned forward and kissed his wife's pregnant belly once again, and then stood up.
She put her hands gently on his head as he was kissing her there, and smiled. She was relieved that Tomas had no regrets for her having Omar's baby instead of his, as most husbands would react like. He was a one-in-a-thousand sort of man, and she was lucky to have married him.
