"How we gonna get out without Sue raisin' a fit? Ya know she's gonna want to go. Especially if she sees any o the other women going." Tod looked at James. "We MIGHT have our answer right here. For BOTH problems. Bruce knows more than all of us, AND Bennie, about our problem, and Robbi could arrange for a distraction for Sue. Robbi asked her more questions the other night than the rest of us, together. She could get Sue to showing her what she was asking about, and Bruce and us could get out of the house without her seeing us leave, and meet Bennie at our place. Our road is nearest to where Sue wrecked the other night, so we would be right there."
Bruce listened to their discussion, and added that he could call his Grandmother and she could answer whatever questions they had, better than he could. SHE was the REAL expert. It was agreed that they better get all the knowledge they could, BEFORE tackling such a project. It might be the best time spent. Possibly saving getting somebody injured, or worse. David reminded them of the conversation they had had with the other rancher at the Sale Barn he, James and Tod had had in Texas. He remembered what the man had said. "They're DANGEROUS!!! LEAVE 'EM BE!!!" Bennie had been told of where Lannie was, and would be here in a little bit. The relief Deputy was going to drop him off in a little while, so he and Lannie could get home in Lannie's car.
Pete consulted his watch. It was almost time to do the milking. The men went around the house to make their way to the barn, and Robbi went in with the other women. They went straight to the barn and opened the gate to the milking corral, where the cows were held while they waited to go in and be milked. James, David, and Tod went with Pete to fill buckets with sweet feed, and brown sugar, to give the cows while they were being milked. With so many willing and knowledgeable hands, the chore took much less time than usual. They finished in time to go outside and watch while Dog and Pup did the work of bringing the cows in. The 2 dogs worked as a team, and it was poetry in motion to watch them. Dog went first to the gate, and slid the bar latch open with his nose and stepped back to push the gate open. Pup pushed the cows through and pushed the gate closed, and used his paw to slide the bar into place, locking it. Pete had opened the gate to the pen open, so they were soon assembled inside of the corral. A few went straight inside the barn, and the milking started. The men helped hook the cows to the machines and dispensed the feed and sugar. Pete smiled. Milking would be done in less than an hour and a half, instead of the usual 3 to 3 and a half it usually took.
They finished the milking, and turned the cattle into the overnight pen, and went up to the house carrying several gallon jars of milk with them for the overnight needs. Betty, Sharon, Misti, and Carol used milk instead of coffee, because of the babies. Sarah would need 2 or 3 bottles during the night on her own. They walked in and the women were sitting around the kitchen table, either nursing, or in Carol's case, feeding, the babies. Dave had joined them while they were down at the barn, and , as soon as he spoke, Sarah looked up and started fussing. Dave went over and took her, after kissing the ladies, ESPECIALLY CAROL, in his arms and began playing with her. There was another knock at the door. Bennie had come just as the door was closing. He kissed all the women and told Lannie, "Eli has the shift tonight. He's got to go over by Rockton. A guy over there found a dead deer in a tree. He took my Go-Pro to take pictures of what he sees. Bennie was still carrying his sidearm and radio. He asked Pete to put it away for him. Pete took it and placed it on the mantle of the fireplace. Each of the men had sat beside their wife or girlfriend.
Robbi had been asking if Billy and Cathy would mind if Bruce came and stayed with her at their house. Cathy laughed and commented that he was welcome to come and stay as long as he wanted. Gail nudged Abe in the ribs. "See what I get for being a good girl?" Bruce laughed. Doris, aided by the other women, got up and started setting the table for supper. They still, even with THIS crowd, had room for more. Their table was long enough to seat 30 people. They only used it for occasions such a this. The kitchen table would accommodate 26 people. It had often, when the k**s were in High School, been filled from the Football Team, the Basketball Team, or Cheerleaders. Sometimes 2 groups at the same time. Once BOTH tables had been filled. The whole FFA had been here THAT night. The FFA Teacher had won a prestigious award, and students and teachers had BOTH been there. Everyone sat and bowed their heads as Pete said Grace. The meal started and was a huge success. Doris had made 3 of her spice cakes, and Sue had made two batches of cookies, and 2 more of fresh made fudge. They would be sampled later in the evening, with cold milk, or hot coffee.
The talk was of things that neighbors talked about, and the evening went on until late, for THEM. They didn't call it a night until nearly 10:30. Billy, Ricky, and Bruce would go and retrieve Bruce's things, tomorrow, and bring them to Billy and Cathy's house.

Pup pushed the cows through and pushed the gate closed, and used his paw to slide the bar into place, locking it. Pete had opened the gate to the pen open, so they were soon assembled inside of the corral. A few went straight inside the barn, and the milking started. The men helped hook the cows to the machines and dispensed the feed and sugar. Pete smiled. Milking would be done in less than an hour and a half, instead of the usual 3 to 3 and a half it usually took.
They finished the milking, and turned the cattle into the overnight pen, and went up to the house carrying several gallon jars of milk with them for the overnight needs. Betty, Sharon, Misti, and Carol used milk instead of coffee, because of the babies. Sarah would need 2 or 3 bottles during the night on her own. They walked in and the women were sitting around the kitchen table, either nursing, or in Carol's case, feeding, the babies. Dave had joined them while they were down at the barn, and , as soon as he spoke, Sarah looked up and started fussing. Dave went over and took her, after kissing the ladies, ESPECIALLY CAROL, in his arms and began playing with her. There was another knock at the door. Bennie had come just as the door was closing. He kissed all the women and told Lannie, "Eli has the shift tonight. He's got to go over by Rockton. A guy over there found a dead deer in a tree. He took my Go-Pro to take pictures of what he sees. Bennie was still carrying his sidearm and radio. He asked Pete to put it away for him. Pete took it and placed it on the mantle of the fireplace. Each of the men had sat beside their wife or girlfriend.
Robbi had been asking if Billy and Cathy would mind if Bruce came and stayed with her at their house. Cathy laughed and commented that he was welcome to come and stay as long as he wanted. Gail nudged Abe in the ribs. "See what I get for being a good girl?" Bruce laughed. Doris, aided by the other women, got up and started setting the table for supper. They still, even with THIS crowd, had room for more. Their table was long enough to seat 30 people. They only used it for occasions such a this. The kitchen table would accommodate 26 people. It had often, when the k**s were in High School, been filled from the Football Team, the Basketball Team, or Cheerleaders. Sometimes 2 groups at the same time. Once BOTH tables had been filled. The whole FFA had been here THAT night. The FFA Teacher had won a prestigious award, and students and teachers had BOTH been there. He had bee inducted into the Hall of Fame, for outstanding achievement.
Everyone sat and bowed their heads as Pete said Grace. The meal started and was a huge success. Doris had made 3 of her spice cakes, and Sue had made two batches of cookies, and 2 more of fresh made fudge. They would be sampled later in the evening, with cold milk, or hot coffee.
The talk was of things that neighbors talked about, and the evening went on until late, for THEM. They didn't call it a night until nearly 10:30. Everybody left happy, except Mike, Sam, Ben, and Rick. Billy, Cathy, Robbi, Bruce, Abe, and Gail went to their house, and the others returned home. Billy, Ricky, and Bruce would go and retrieve Bruce's things, tomorrow, and bring them to Billy and Cathy's house.
During the night, a storm moved in, and gave them almost 3 inches of rain. In town, Mary cuddled up to Jerry, her old fear of storms returning. Jerry made the most of it. 3 times. Sharon and Carol, like old farm girls, relaxed and enjoyed the sounds of the tempest outside their windows. They all enjoyed the fuss Mother Nature made on nights like this. The men dreamed of ponds filling to their limits, and of faceless creatures in the night.
Bennie and Lannie curled up in each others arms. Bennie knew Lannie hadn't succeeded that day, or she would have told him. They both knew that, sooner or later, she would get what she wanted. When the time was right. They had a lifetime to get their dream granted.
