The Goodrich's had moved yesterday, and Mrs. Goodrich and her daughters were cleaning the house for the last time. They went up to pay their respects to her, and thank them for what they had done. The house almost sparkled. Except for where there was carpeting, the floors were like mirrors, the windows were spotless, and the fixtures looked as if brand new. They talked a bit, sending their thanks to Mr. Goodrich, and his sons, and Tod gave her the money agreed upon for the tranquilizer gun, and loads. With 4 wild jacks on the farm, now, it would be a handy tool to have. They were disagreeable on their BEST days. Most times, they were downright MEAN! They carried out the things they had brought with them, and bid them Goodbye, and invited them to visit at will. This house was bigger than either of the houses on the old place.
They walked out to see that the foundation for the basement, and the floor to the house were finished, and curing, and that the materials had been put together to form the structure framing. The walls, instead of being made of 2x4s like most houses, was made from 2x8s. It would be VERY strong and insulated near to death. A crane would place them, and they would be nailed in place. The house was going to be 2 story, with a roomy attic. It would have dormer windows in six places for light and ventilation. Dave's plans called for 6 bedrooms, each with a private bath, a formal dining room, a huge kitchen, with space for a freezer and fridge, and, ABOVE ALL, a huge table. There would be a utility room for the washer and dryer, with a sink, and a screened in back porch. Dave was building it to take advantage of the 3 huge sycamore trees out back to shade the porch in the summertime. The two elder men were going back to sign the papers, next week, and arrange for three moving vans to move their belongings. Dave had already contracted for 8 people to meet them here to move them in. 6 men, and 2 women to help the ladies. They would move the clothing, and a few other prized things, but the largest part would be done by the moving crew. They would be here for 3 days, before returning to Texas.
Dave called the foreman to tell him that as soon as they finished hooking the utilities, to call it a day. He was giving them the next day off, with pay. They would start putting the walls in place on Monday, weather permitting. After all. It WAS March. Weather here could go south in a heartbeat, and often did. They had all seen it in the 80s during the day, and snow that night. The men took a turn around the property checking hat everything was as it should be, and drove out to check the stock, there. Dave admired the spot near the river, hoping one of the houses would be built there. It was so beautiful, and peaceful. Carol, like Sharon had warned him about getting ideas. Who knew? It might happen.
