"Son, I don't know if any of this will help, so try and listen and track with me for a few minutes please. First, I will never make a decision for myself that will take you away from me. You may have to make those decisions, but I don't and I won't. I don't say that to put pressure on you. "Second, there may come a time when you do make that decision and I am prepared to accept it and even cheer you on. There is more than 20 years difference between us, so I know it can't go on forever and be fair to you. So I will enjoy it while it lasts. You will still be young and virile when it is time for me to give up this crazy-ass lifestyle and drift into old lady living.
"Third, I know for a fact that Abby loves you. She has been having similar conversations with Rick. And I have seen the look in her eyes when you two are together. It isn't just the heat of sex. "I have no idea what to even say to all that, mom. How long have you all been working through this without me?"
"Actually, Rick and I just talked about it the night before you and I left to come here. I haven't talked to Abby at all. I am taking Rick's word for it regarding how she feels.
