I'd known my friends Matt and Julie for almost ten years. Through that time frame, I'd watched their behavior get stupid, I'd seen them cheat on each other repeatedly, I'd seen and heard about the lies and I'd watched as their family fell apart. I wasn't sure when it started but having heard and seen it all through the years, I knew the outcome was not going to be good. The worst part? Seeing how their kids had to live through their bullshit. Matt's wife Julie had multiple boyfriends, had cheated multiple times, and Matt had made his own stupid decisions involving a DUI, a couple of arrests, and some drunken fights.
I got a call one night from Maddie asking me if I'd come pick her up. I was stunned. This hadn't happened before. She and I had gotten to be close through the bullshit but we'd never done more than talk on the phone. I called her grandparents who she'd spent quite a bit of time with, explained what was going on, and her grandpa said that he was aware she wanted to leave. I told him I'd be there within about an hour or so.
I showed up and found Maddie waiting in the driveway with a suitcase and two shoulder bags. I had no idea what was going on.
Maddie climbed into the car and burst into tears. I spent the next half hour with her leaning on my shoulder, crying, and trying to explain the crap going on in her house. And then she dropped the bomb on me.
"I talked to my grandpa. He said I can come stay with you if you're okay with that?"
My youngest daughter was in college. My oldest had moved out of the house and was living her own life, had a job of her own, and I hadn't had anyone in the house as a teenager in years. Even my youngest daughter Miranda was mature beyond her age and had been pretty well self-sufficient since she was a teen.
I told Maddie I'd have to talk to her grandpa and then think it over.
I went into the house, sat down with him while Maddie agreed to stay in the car, and he explained how bad it was. The parents had multiple relationships, cheating, lying, and an assorted dozen stories of bullshit, reality TV lifestyle choices and other things that Mike (grandpa) didn't think the kids needed to be around.
I told Mike I'd take Maddie with me for a few days and see how things panned out. Mike agreed to keep Little Matt (Maddie's brother) with them until they could work things out.
Four days later, Mike called and said that the parents had agreed to sign over custody of the kids to the grandparents while they "figured shit out." I was stunned. I had no idea it could come to that. And then when I asked him what he'd suggest, he said, "well it's summer vacation. I'm not sure if you'd have an interest in trying to let Maddie stay with you? Adjust to somewhere new. Possibly just get some time away and think shit through?"
I had no idea what the fuck I was thinking but I agreed. I said I'd talk to her and I'd let her make her own decision.
I went into the other room where Maddie was sitting watching TV. I sat down next to her and I spent time explaining to her that the choice was hers. She could stay here where I worked day hours, was in and out with a flexible schedule, and we'd hang out, spend time together, I'd drive her back and forth the hour to see her grandparents, and she could get some peace and quiet at the house.
Maddie threw her arms around me, hugged me, said yes, and planted a kiss right on my mouth. I was absolutely stunned.
She backed up, her face all beet red, embarrassed as hell, and apologized.
"I'm sorry Joey. I didn't mean that. it wasn't really right. But, well, thank you. Thank you so much. I just want to try to find out what else I can do. I don't want to live like that anymore," Maddie said. And then she threw her arms around me again.
I couldn't help it. I felt her boobs pushing against my chest, I felt her arms wrap around my neck, and I felt the emotions she was showing being all upset. I gently pushed her back, looked at her and smiled.
"It's okay. I'm glad I can help. You're a great kid. You've got a great future. I'm glad to be here for you," I said.

It was so soft, so tender, and so intimate. And I hadn't had physical contact with a woman in almost 2 years. I hadn't experienced that kind of touch in a long time.
I have no idea what the fuck I was thinking when I kissed her back. Initially, it was gentle, soft and affectionate. Then she opened her mouth, and I felt it. Sparks. Her tongue on mine. Maddie got up, looked at me, smiled, her face beet red, and said, "can you show me where I'm going to be sleeping?"
I couldn't believe it. Jesus. This is not what I had signed up for.
But as she got up off the couch, I could not help but look at her as she moved gracefully across the floor.
For sixteen, she was beyond fucking cute. About 5 foot 7. Taller than most girls her age. Probably weighing in about 125-130 pounds, not skinny and unhealthy, but on the very small and petite side. Instead, I walked her through the house, gave her a tour (she'd seen it one time before), and took her to the guest bedroom upstairs across the hall from my own.
"No girlfriend?" Maddie asked me.
"What?" I finally said
"No girlfriend? I've looked around, and I don't see signs of anything that shows a girl or woman or whatever is in the house," Maddie said.
I felt awkward. But thought I should at least explain it.
"No. My youngest is in college at Eastern Michigan. You know about her. My oldest lives down in Texas. I see her 4-5 times a year. But it's just me. A couple of crap relationships. And figuring it's easier to have friends, a social life, and be single," I finally said.
Maddie turned around and smiled.
"Well, some lucky girl is gonna realize you're a good catch and take advantage of that. Besides, you're sexy for an older dude. They'll figure it out soon enough," she said with a grin.
I couldn't get the thought out of my fucking head of us sitting on the couch like we had, kissing in the intimate way we had about a half-hour ago. But she never made mention of it and acted like it hadn't even happened. So I just let it go.
I showed her the bathroom that would be hers as I had my own in the master bedroom, showed her the closets, and gave her the tour of the rest of the upstairs. She took her suitcase and duffle bags into the bedroom and dropped them on the bed.
"I'm super tired. Is that okay that I crash a bit early? I don't mean to be lame and boring. But I hope you don't mind?" Maddie said.
"Nope. I have the day off tomorrow. So we can take a trip around town, I'll show you things, we can get kind of comfortable with how the schedules are gonna work, and go from there, ok?" I said.
She smiled.
"Thank You. I love you for what you're doing. You're an amazing guy. I'll always remember you for being so sweet," Maddie said.
She walked up to me, put her arms around me, hugged me, and looked up into my face.
I leaned down to give her a kiss on the cheek. And that didn't happen.
She kissed me on the mouth, slid her hands around my back, and she pushed hard. I felt her boobs pushing against me again, and I was shocked and awkwardly scared that I felt myself getting hard in my jeans. This was not a good thing.
She kissed me for a couple of seconds, backed off, smiled and said, "thank you." and closed the door.
I walked downstairs wondering what the fuck I'd gotten myself into.
About an hour later, I was heading upstairs to my bedroom, having changed into shorts and a t-shirt and was walking down the hallway. I saw her door partway open, so I thought I'd knock and make sure she was okay.
And I stopped dead in my fucking tracks.
Maddie was standing there in the guest bedroom wearing a black bra showing off a small round chest with cleavage and wearing a pair of peach bikini underwear.

I heard the door open. I sat there on the bed, leaning against the headboard watching TV. And I saw Maddie walk in.
"Hey," I said.
"Hey yourself," Maddie said.
I sat there, not sure what to say. It felt kind of awkward.
And then without a word she climbed into bed and wrapped the covers around herself.
"Are you okay?" I finally said. I felt awkward and not really sure what the fuck to say.
"Yeah. I'm sorry. About earlier. Like that was weird. I didn't, you know, mean to act that way towards you," Maddie said.
"Act what way?" I said kind of awkwardly.
She laughed.
"Oh. Do you always kiss sixteen-year-old girls like that? Is that normal?" Maddie finally said with a laugh.
"Oh, God. No. I'm sorry. I didn't mean, you know, to make it sound that way. I'm sorry. I sound like a fucking pervert," I said with a stutter.
Maddie laughed.
She moved over, leaned her head on my shoulder, put her hand on mine, and smiled up at me.
"I'm just kidding. I'm glad I'm here. Is it okay if I sleep in here with you? I won't tell anyone," Maddie said.
I was nervous as hell, scared, and really not sure what to say.
"Uh, well okay," I said. I didn't know how to answer otherwise.
Maddie leaned down into me, laid against my shoulder, and I saw her close her eyes.
All I could think about was having seen her standing in her bedroom wearing that cute fucking bra and those sexy as hell underwear, staring at that teenage body, so fucking petite, small and beautiful.
And I heard her speak.
"Can I have a kiss goodnight, Joey?" Maddie said.
I looked down at her, leaned in, and said, "You know this is wrong?"
She smiled.
"Goodnight Joey," Maddie said.
And kissed me softly on the mouth.
She rolled over and I watched her gently fall asleep.
