The webmaster spent most of his morning on the Internet, chatting with
friends. Not his usual Saturday morning routine but he had decided to try
it once. He wasn't sure if he would ever do it again but it was a better
experience than he had expected.
Now he had chores to perform. First the dishwasher had to be replaced.
That took him only an hour and a badly scraped set of knuckles. He then
set to work on the server farm. He intended to split his web site into
several areas to improve speed and accessibility. He was adding two
more servers in the next two weeks so he began the preliminary work on
that project. He had tons of e-mail to answer, as usual. Much of the e-
mail was ridiculous. He answered them though, this was his hobby, his
bliss.
Many did not understand his passion for this expensive non-profit little
venture. He wasn't concerned with them understanding. He knew why he
did it and that was enough for him. Some of the e-mails were getting
pretty stupid lately. Requests for things most people would not dream of.
Complaints about the way he ran his site and complaints about the speed
in which he answered e-mail. He got over a hundred a day! It was no
secret that he did this as a hobby in addition to owning and running a
business. He spent more time on his hobby then anything else. His
business did not suffer, he was extremely successful and could afford the
web site without outside funding. Many people still did not have a grasp
of the situation.
After answering e-mail for awhile the servers suddenly started acting up.
He tried rebooting them all and got them running again but ten minutes
later they crashed again. For the next 3 hours he struggled with the
problem until he discovered the problem was from outside interference
due to problems in the phone lines. Out of his control
The web site was down and he couldn't fix it himself. He had to wait for
the Phone Company to get it done. This was something the webmaster
hated more than anything else, a problem he couldn't fix. He had to sit
back and wait.
He decided to go to dinner and then see if the phone lines were fixed. He
drove to a favorite restaurant and got stuck next to the kitchen. His
dinner was underdone and the waiter was a fool. He got back to his car to
find a flat tire. After changing it he headed for the mall. He needed
something from Radio Shack.
At the mall he waited for a woman to back out and a kid zipped into the
parking place he was lined up for. The boy got out of the car and headed
into the mall wearing a jacket with the picture of a big black bird on it.
The webmaster walked into the shopping center and headed for the mall
map. Before he got there, he spied a strange new store. Well, he had
never seen it before but it wasn't really new looking. It had an old
fashioned wooden door on the front and the sign said?no, that couldn?t
be right.
Intrigued, the webmaster entered the store. Above his head, a tiny brass
bell tinkled, announcing his entrance. He looked around. The store was
full of different shaped bottles and boxes filled with liquids, powders,
herbs and spices, and what looked like dried animal parts. The different
containers were labeled various languages. Everything had an even
coating of dust on it.
"Mindy, at last we meet, come on in." the voice from the back of the
store called out. A chill went down the back of the webmaster. No one
knew who Mindy was, no one! He cautiously walked toward the voice.
It belonged to a very old looking man wearing an old blue robe, it looked
like a bath robe. He had gray hair and a long beard. His hands were
adorned with several ornate silver rings. While appearing old, his eyes
were clear and bright blue. They burned with intelligent and a less than
subtle trace of mischief.
"Mindy, I an so happy you have finally come to my store. Can I get you
something to drink?" the old man asked sweetly.
"My name is not Mindy. The sign out side said 'Spells R Us'. Is this a
joke? Who put you up to this and how did you find out who I am?" The
stress of the afternoon was wearing on the webmaster and he was getting
angry.
"I know that's not your real name" the old man said, "but it is the name
more people would recognize. Your secret is safe with me. Don't worry.
Mindy, you're having a number of problems lately, aren't you? With the
web site I mean. Fictionmania is getting tougher to handle. Lots of
complaints, lots of hardware and software problems and we won't even
discuss MAER. I have arranged for you to come here today to offer you
a solution."
"What kind of solution?" Mindy asked, (for he was the one known to
thousands as Mindy).
"I can solve all your problems and grant one of your greatest wishes.
How would you like to be a beautiful young woman?" The Wizard
asked.
Mind's head jerked up.
"Can you do that?" Mindy asked.
"Yes, I can." The old man reached under the counter and brought out two
small bottles. One was filled with a clear liquid. The other was filled
with a pink fluid.
"The contents of this bottle" the Wizard explained, "will turn you into a
20 year old woman. 5' 6, long, golden blonde, hair; blue eyes, creamy
skin, measurements 36, 24, 35. C cup breasts. IQ same as you have now.
Smart and pretty, athletic, loves to play golf and swim. Creative, she
paints stilllife's and landscapes and she sculpts. She has a trust fund
from her late father that allows her to paint and sculpt until she makes
name for herself. She intends to marry and have a couple of kids when
she has seen enough of the world. A dynamic and personable young
lady."
"What's the catch? You don't do things like this, just to be nice." Mindy
reads everything on the site.
"Well, you will be an old fashion girl, you'll have no interest in
computers. None at all." The old man said, his face expressionless.
"That means no Fictionmania. No place for all those people to post their
stories. No Rollermania or Hairmania. No chats with authors, many of
my close friends I met through my web site and the TG Community.
That's not fair old man. It's not right. How can you make an offer like
that?" Mindy asked, anguish in her voice.
"Come now Mindy, you've thought about pulling the plug on the site
before haven't you?" The Wizard said.
"I never did though." Mindy answered.
"Now you have a good reason to do so. Just drink it down and in a few
minutes, a lovely young woman, with no back problems and no time
consuming hobby will walk out of here and maybe meet the man she will
marry. Or maybe just the man she will have a long, satisfying and
intimate relationship with." Now the old man was smiling. It wasn't the
kind of smile that made you feel good when you saw it.
"What's in the other bottle?" Mindy asked. Trying to seek a different
solution.
"That's just a little drink that will make you forget. If you drink that, you
will forget you were ever in the store or that I made you this offer."
"Will I remember who I was and what I did, if I become the girl?" Mindy
asked.
"Oh, yes, of course. You will remember everything." The old man said.
"What if I drink them both?" Mindy asked.
"Then you remember everything and you are still yourself." The Wizard
told him.
Mindy looked around the shop, looking for what he didn't know, he
wanted another option. Finally, he looked at the old man.
"Do I have to decide right now?" Mindy asked.
"Nope, the potions are good until midnight. Then, they are just water.
You can take either one but not both." The old man placed the bottles in
a bag and handing the bag to Mindy. "Here, take them home. Think
about it. You have until midnight."
Mindy walked slowly to the door and walked out of the shop. He took
two paces and turned to look back. The store was gone. He glanced
down and saw the bag in his hand. It wasn't a dream. He checked his
watch, it was 6:00pm. It was going to be a long night.
