(Bill Hart) I'd like to thank everyone for coming and for reading my stories. If you didn't read them, there'd be no reason to be here. And I hope I can answer all of your questions tonight. (*Anne-Mal) Bill is the creator of the SRU universe, which is the most popular character on Fictionmania! So Let me ask the first question: How long have you been writing? (Bill Hart) Fiction, probably off and on, since I was in college, which was a while back. Non-fiction, I guess we all did term papers in school. It also where I have my only published material, which is a User's Manual for one of the software products for the company I work for. (Bashful) Is the Wizard malevolent or just misunderstood. What was your original concept of him? (Bill Hart) Originally, neither. I've always described him as having a perverse sense of humor. He just became a very complicated character as more stories were written. The old man just likes things the way he likes them. (Julie) How long have you been working on "A Wizard's Tale" and do you foresee many spin-offs from it? (Bill Hart) That's a far encompassing question. Raven will have a story that sets up the initial scene. I have at least one more story myself which is a sequel to both "A Wizard's Altered Fate" and another SRU story that a lot of people have asked for a sequel. Raven and Eric have a series of stories planned, which I suppose I shouldn't discuss here. I'm not sure how much involvement I will have that, past using the same characters and interacting with his plot. It could last a while. We've been hoping Liz and Jenny would join in at least, but that is their decision to make (Ellie) How exactly has the Wizard changed since you first created him? (Bill Hart) The first tale the wizard appeared in is "The Frat Party" a 30-line little quickie. The wizard, as well as all of the other characters, were pretty shallow. That began to change with the "Strangeness" storylines and definitely changed when I opened the SRU. (Ellie) How has being the key figure in a major shared universe affected the way his personality is drawn? (Bill Hart) Being the key figure obviously changes the way he's been portrayed. And everyone tends to write him differently, but for the most part it just goes into his perverse nature. Although I guess I did give him a lot more depth with the first of SRU/AF crossovers. I haven't read many SRU stories I haven't liked though. (Mindy) My turn, but first for your information, there are 143 SRU stories on Fictionmania, with a large backlog! A couple even came in today! Counting those, a few on the TG-Fiction list, a few on TSA list and a few on other sites. I would say that the number is around 180 to 200 written. What in your mind attracts people to write SRU tales? (Bill Hart) Wish-fulfillment more than anything. There aren't a lot of rules to bog you down. And they can be as serious or funny as you want them to be (Tom) When I read your stories, dialogs and plots are very well written, how did you learn to write like that? (Bill Hart) I read a lot. And the writing just comes naturally. Plotting things out sometimes takes a while. I carry one of the little spiral notebooks around and write notes in it when the mood strikes. I'll go the hockey game and script plots in it during the intermissions. (Tom) Are dialogs easy to you? (Bill Hart) I try to make the dialogs sound natural and they are often the part I script out first with the scene then built around it. I don't know if anyone else writes stories the way I do, but it seems to work for me. (sue) Bill, you have certainly written a wide variety of TG/TF stories. What do you credit as your inspiration for all these storylines? (Bill Hart) A wicked imagination! :) Actually, I can get an inspiration for a story from just about anywhere. They just kind of pop into my head. My story "Once Upon a Frog" came from reading a Nancy Springer story that didn't even have a frog in it. I've even been inspired at times from spam posted to the list or from the cover of a book I'm reading. (*Anne-Mal) It has been about a hour, so everyone say hi to Bill so you won be thrown off! (Andy) I read that you prefer others writing SRU stories to not get 'personal' about the Wizard; no details about his life, like what he does off-duty and so on. Now that you're writing him as a more central character in your last story, is this changing? In other words, what DON'T you want to see in SRU stories? (Bill Hart) With the latest story, I've pretty well opened up a lot of possibilities that weren't there before. He'll no doubt be the central character in the sequel as well, but I picture that being in the present (for the most part). Writing an early history of an established character can be difficult. And I hope I was consistent in the last story, in how he evolved as he has. A lot will depend on what other people want to write. Still no name, no firm location and don't mess with my "Strangeness" characters will probably remain the only really firm rules. (Bashful) Fred the Wizard has just granted you one and only one wish, anything you desire, what do you wish for? (Bill Hart) I wish I knew... Oops. (*Anne-Mal) *Granted* (Bashful) No, no, no, you can't get out that easy! (Bill Hart) If you write enough wish stories, you worry about making wishes. (Ellie) Kind of a watch-ye wishy response! (Bill Hart) I probably wish we wouldn't have flame wars about piddly stuff. But I'd probably get set on fire and then piddled on. (Bashful) LOL (Bill Hart) :) (Bashful) Well, I'm probably gonna have to flame you over that! (Bill Hart) Perhaps. It certainly was evasive enough. (Bashful) The old man wouldn't let you get away with that, but I will! (Bill Hart) Not for very long anyway. (Chrissy) If you were in a shopping centre and saw a shop called Spells R Us. Would you go in? (Bill Hart) Yes. It would be an adventure, regardless of the what the old man did to me. (*Anne-Mal) Have you already done so? (Bill Hart) Maybe, Maybe not. (Aaron) Hi Mr. Hart, I'm a big fan of your work! (Bill Hart) Thank you, Aaron. (Aaron) What first gave you the idea for the Spells 'R Us Wizard and the whole concept behind Spells 'R Us? (Bill Hart) How long have you got, Aaron? The first story the wizard appeared in was a 30-line quickie. He was just there. The quickie inspired "Strangeness at the Frat House" as an extension and I needed a place in the mall for Terry and Chris to go. Spells 'R Us sounded appropriate and when I got to where I was going to open the universe up to everyone, SRU and the wizard were just the natural place to go. And the rest is history. (CarrieGore) Hi Bill, do you see a growing difference between "official" and "unofficial" SRU stories? And also, do you ever worry about what people are doing in your universe? *Grin* (Bill Hart) I'm not sure I see much of a difference between "official" and "unofficial". I try not to worry too much about things people are doing in SRU. I know there are a lot of adult stories written that make the Newsgroups and not the lists, but I don't see the harm. I try to read all the SRU stories when I see them. And I will make comment if necessary. I've surprised some people every now and again, but I don't see that a causing any problems. (CarrieGore) That's interesting: You seem to write very long SRU stories, whereas a lot of authors (myself included) use it when they just want to write 16k quickies! (Bill Hart) I seem to write long stories period, but my SRU stories tend to become epic in size and scope. Maybe I've run out of short SRU stories to tell. But even this last "ReGenesis" story was 80K+ (nanomage) Bill, because of the patchwork nature of SRU, it seems to be that the wizard operates for a variety of motives but underlying that, seem to be a purpose that will in the end turn out to be both compassionate and just. (Bill Hart) True. But a variety of motives is a symptom of his perversity. And for the most part he doesn't do things for evil purposes, although some folks do write him that way. (nanomage) Perhaps he is emptying out pockets of dangerous magic as he travels? (Bill Hart) That's always a possibility. But in traveling from place to place, drawn to where he is needed, he could easily tap that magic present for his own purposes. I hadn't thought about that, but it's certainly possible. (nanomage) The best way to achieve his ends might not always be the nicest one then? (Bill Hart) Not necessarily, the greatest good for the greatest number of people implies some people are going to get shortchanged. (nanomage) It must be me, but I like symmetry! (Bill Hart) But real life isn't necessarily symmetric. (nanomage) True, too true! Bill, one day you will write the opus that ties it together! (Bill Hart) Someday. I keep adding new plots and not completely resolving all of them. I really need to close down a couple plot threads. (Ellie) Maybe it's like the Ovid stories, except for the obvious punishments. All of the characters are better off in some way for the change. (Bill Hart) I hope that true in the overall picture for the SRU stories. It certainly seems to be in the Professor's Ovid stories. I've had some people complain of late that my SRU stories are unrealistic, but how realistic can you get dealing with magic as a primary plot element? (Tom) I read most of your writings in TG and TF stories, those I prefer are "Strangeness at the Frat" and "Sorority" houses, that could be good for a movie. Many have talk about doing a TG movie, but again maybe a movie about werewolves could be more acceptable then a male to female transformation. What stories of yours would you like to be made into a movie? (Bill Hart) I'd like to "Once Upon a Frog" as a movie, It has the M2F transform in it, but its essentially done for laughs. I think the "Strangeness" stories would probably translate well to movies, as well, but the key is the TF/TG and shooting for your audience. (Tom) What do you mean by the key? Something that would sell? (Bill Hart) In any story dealing with a transformation, you're only going to hit a segment of the viewing audience. And if someone in the powers that be doesn't like your idea then forget it. That's one of the things that bothered me with the new "Fantasy Island". The executives wanted it to be different than the original, but apparently the vast majority of the audience didn't. And then they didn't give them time to readjust. (Tom) Some of your stories would be great for the TV show "Perversion of Science"! (Bill Hart) "Witness Relocation" would work good on "Perversion". And its really short. Editor's Note- Only problem is that "Perversion of Science" are screenplays based on EC Comics stories, mostly "Weird Science". (Tom) Who knows maybe someday a director will take an interest in your stories! I hope it is not a porn movie! (Bill Hart) Some of my stories could easily translate into a porn movie. Everything seems permissible, if not overly trite, in adult movies. (Tom) There are vampire sex movies, that have very marginal TG. There always will be some Ed Wood type director who could try it out! :-) (Bill Hart) Or Troma. Actually I could see Troma making movies based on some of the stuff that appears on the mailing list. (Tom) Or those who made the "Blair Witch Project"! (Bill Hart) We could always make one ourselves just like they did. (Tom) Why not? (Bill Hart) Why not, indeed? (Tom) You would need some money for the FX or find brothers and sisters that look alike! (Bill Hart) Or good morphing programs. Or friends at ILM! (Aaron) Hi, Bill, as I was saying before I am a big fan of your stories. I especially liked the "SRU Anniversary" Story. (Bill Hart) Thank you again, Aaron. But which anniversary? My third year anniversary comes around in October. Hard for me to believe it's been that long! (Aaron) The story is titled "Friends are Thicker than Wishes". In that story you wrote a scene, with Marvin and Krysti getting wishes, that was wonderfully funny! Was that your initial intention? (Bill Hart) Hopefully, when I'm funny, I was intending to be funny. But sometimes as my stories evolve, I get an idea in midstream that I have to go back and retrofit into the plot. (Aaron) I wasn't sure, because seeing Marvin acting like a girl involuntarily made me laugh really hard! And when the wish was added for him to seem attractive, you had the guys hit on him, saying, "You're looking real good Marvin babe..."! That was really a delight to read! (Bill Hart) I've had people complain that I always wipe memories clean and start from scratch. That probably had a lot to do with that scene. (Aaron) But that makes your stories unique! (Bill Hart) Sometimes I just have a lot of fun writing these stories. (Aaron) You have a very witty sense of humor! (Bill Hart) Perverse????? (Aaron) I didn't say that, you did! I would say unique and witty, which is what makes you a very interesting and fascinating writer! (Bill Hart) Uniqueness is in the eye (or someplace farther south) of the beholder. (Aaron) (That comment is exactly the type of witticism you have, Bill Hart!) (Ellie) Just how much of the Wizard's personality is yours (or vice versa)? (Bill Hart) I would say the wizard and I share a similar sense of humor. (Bashful) Bill, does your family know about your writing? Is there an S.O. who knows about it? (Bill Hart) My dad used to read my Stanley stories before he died. He enjoyed them. My mom, brothers and sister know I write stories, but I don't if they know exactly what I write. There's no S.O. I like being single. And besides, I'd be a pain in the ass to live with. I'm old and set in my ways. (Bashful) Sounds like someone I've read about! I reread some today, I liked "The Evil One" and "Potion #6". (Mindy) Bill, what is the story you are most proud of? (Bill Hart) I think the story I like most is "A Mugwump Wakes" which was posted on the TSA_TALK list and involves prejudice only. It one of two Blind Pig stories that I've written. (*Anne-Mal) How do you feel about collaborations? (Bill Hart) Collaborations can be a touchy subject. It depends on all the people involved to get finished and tempers can rise quickly and egos bruised.
