(LizBennett) I thought I was rotisseriing a chicken, but the label *actually* said,
"stewing hen." It was as tough as an eagle!

(LizBennett) But *extremely* flavorful! It is now on the way to becoming
chicken soup for *Thursday's* dinner!

(*Anne-Mal) What's more important taste or tenderness?
(regal) I prefer both.
(LizBennett) Ah! Philosophers have argued that for millennia. Problem is, I
bought a case of *four* frozen eagles, so there are three left. The others will be
stewed!
(*Anne-Mal) As the commercial says, we'll be over tomorrow!
(LizBennett) So what happened about our resolution for a Mindy chat?

(SteveZ) Hello, all. Sorry about being almost late.
(*Anne-Mal) Steve, do you have an opening statement?
(SteveZ) First of all, I want to thank Super for being a good provider
of ideas and also for archiving all my stories!
(*Anne-Mal) Do you have the URL for his site?
(SteveZ) Also I wonder why is it that so many people wanted me to do this, yet
so few people send any comments when any stories get posted?
(*Anne-Mal) People are whispering to me that everyone gets the same
treatment. Some stories have 4,000 to 6,000 readers on Fictionmania and have
no reviews.
(SteveZ) I sort of gave up looking for comments about two or three
stories ago, but I still wonder sometimes. I sort of just go with the flow now.
(*Anne-Mal) Are reviews necessary?
(SteveZ) Reviews and comments are the only reason my story writing
style has improved over the past year and they do provide me with nice ideas
for further story work.
(a_super_hero) Most of your characters are classic such as Catwoman
and Batgirl, are there any new characters that have been recently created
that you like?
(SteveZ) I am tempted to play with Supergirl and a few Marvel
characters like Black Widow and White Queen, but none of the new
characters.
(Donna) Why that obsession with Catwoman?
(SteveZ) Mostly because of Lois Lane number 70 and the old Batman
show. That comic has such a good transformation scene, while the show has
good visuals!
(Donna) Any kind of attraction for Julie Newmar?
(SteveZ) The only thing I didn't like about Julie was that she rarely
wore her mask! I loved how she brought the character to life though. I've
met her at a few conventions!
(bashful) What is the favorite story you have written?
(SteveZ) The favorite of my own is Cheetah Lives.
(bashful) What is your favorite story by another author?
(SteveZ) Any one of Gunslingers.
(Regal) Are there any characters that you would like to write of but haven't yet?
(SteveZ) I just love any female character that is in a nifty costume! I love
stories with forced identity transfers or mind switches and of course, TG.
Finding newer characters to work with may provide variety, but I would have to
do more work! It is just a matter of something striking my whim.
(Rebel) Are female characters more interesting than men?
(SteveZ) Since I am a TV, I just like writing about female characters. Nothing
more.
(bashful) Have you been published?
(SteveZ) I have been told that I should send my work to Marvel, DC or
whomever, but other than that, no! At least not yet!
(bashful) For me getting comments, reviews or constructive criticism are the
best pay I can receive for my work! Would you like to be published off-line?
(SteveZ) YES, I want to be.
(a_super_hero) What do you think of comics today as compared to the Silver
and Golden ages?
(SteveZ) Super, I really don't think that current comics can compare
to older ones in story value. Some art is much better, but writing in them
stinks, for the most part.
(rebel) What sort of fiction do you read off-line?
(SteveZ) I read Clancy other similar political/technical type adventures.
(sue) What future directions do you see yourself going in, still comics based or
more fiction oriented?
(SteveZ) I am hoping to finally get into non-comics but it may be a while.
(*Anne-Mal) You edit stories for people now, why?
(SteveZ) Mostly because I was tired of seeing stories posted with major
readability problems, so I offered to help. It has hurt my writing, as now I don't
put all my time towards creating, but I do get a certain satisfaction from editing!
(Raven) As an editor, what is the most frequent problem that you
encounter in the stories, other than passive voice.
(SteveZ) Mostly in punctuation and using quotations.
(bashful) What do you do for a living?
(SteveZ) Until a couple weeks ago, I worked for USAirways. They fired me for
absences I could not control. Trying to get that job back.
(bashful) If you could do anything you wanted to what would that be?
(SteveZ) What I would love to do is write and/or edit for a living at a publishing
house or newspaper.
(a_super_hero) What areas do you like to focus on more: plot, scene
descriptions, clothing, personality or dialog?
(SteveZ) I love being very particular about describing a scene, especially in
telling the reading what is being worn and what the person looks like. That way,
they don't have to guess. I was told a long time ago to work on plot
development so that's where that comes from.
(rebel) Enough with the kid gloves, tell us straight! What is the relationship
between you and Anne-Mal. Is it true she dumped you for Eric?
(SteveZ) Rebel, I don't know where that came from? Please elucidate.
(rebel) We've all heard the rumors on Fictionmania. Please give us the straight
scoop!
(SteveZ) I know nothing about what goes on at Fictionmania. I just post things
there, enjoy the random images, and every now and then look at the
hyperboard.
(rebel) That's what others have said, but have you ever heard of the term cover
up?
(SteveZ) I really don't know how to answer that.
(rebel) Sorry, just a joke!
(*Anne-Mal) Okay, I am blushing! I wrote the story puzzle, "The Things you do
for Love" as a homage to Steve and Vickie Tern. You are all just gossips!
(bashful) Do you outline or is it off the cuff?
(SteveZ) Believe or not, no outlines. I get an idea and just start writing. Now, if
Super or somebody gives me plot to work with, I build upon that and go from
there.
(bashful) How long does it take to write an average story?
(SteveZ) It normally takes me a few hours to write a story, sometimes a few
days, depending on the story.
(bashful) How extensive are your rewrites?
(SteveZ) I normally don't do any rewrites. I'm going to get some more soda. All
of my writing is powered by Pepsi!
(rebel) You and Hugh Heffner. Which stories do you really like on Fictionmania?
(SteveZ) I love all of Morpheus' stories. I love Raven's stories and a bunch of
others! It would just take too long. There are just too many good authors to list
all the ones I like. In case anyone wonders, I do send comments on most stories
I read.
(*Anne-Mal) Steve sends reviews to every author via e-mail!
(a_super_hero) Which character would you like to have visit with you in real
life?
(SteveZ) Catwoman or Batgirl.
(a_super_hero) Which character would you like to turn into the most?
(SteveZ) I wear my Catwoman costume more than others, so she would be my
favorite.
(LizBennett) Steve, yesterday evening Raven suggested a convention of
Fictionmania writers, an actual one, in the flesh, so to speak. I disagreed, saying
face-to-face meetings among us could spoil the magic we have. You started to
reply, then I think we all got cut off in the Great Tuesday Crash. Could you
elaborate a bit more now?
(SteveZ) I was originally all for the idea, but later the line of reasoning you put
out was good. I am now thinking that the magic might disappear were we all to
get together. I'd still like to meet a few friends, though.
(Raven) When are you going to do a story with Gambit?
(SteveZ) I'll have to do some research on the character, because they've really
been messing with him lately.
(WendyGJR2) Steve, the superhero genre tends to lend itself to transformation
fiction, but is there a reason *you* write so much of it?
(SteveZ) Mostly because I have a good feel for the comic world and the
characters therein. For a real life story, more would have to be made up. I have
to develop, my own independent writing style. This explanation could go on all
night.
(rebel) What do you think of writing contests, like Sapphire's Coming Apart
Last Year?
(SteveZ) I enjoyed Sapphire's contest, at least the results. I was not at the point
where anything I was writing could be considered good enough, yet.
I was glad that Gunslinger had his contests last summer, because they gave me
my first non-comic work. I loved doing them!
(*Anne-Mal) What do you think of Mindy and Fictionmania?
(SteveZ) I think Mindy has done an outstanding job of providing a forum for
authors of all levels of capability. If I hadn't had Fictionmania to work with, I
would probably still be writing drivel. Some may say that I am still writing drivel.
(Regal) No, not drivel at all.
(SteveZ) Fictionmania is a place where new writers can get hints and tips from
older more experienced writers improve their own work that way.
(Debbie) You do not write drivel, Steve.

new writer, what would it be?
(SteveZ) Wendy, I would say to stick with a story until you have a good solid
plot that can be easily understood. The reader has to picture what you've
written without having to use a lot of imagination.
(Debbie) Which genre do you prefer, magic or CD?
(SteveZ) Magic, for crossdressing is easy, magic is more involved.
(Debbie) Who are some of your favorite authors?
(SteveZ) For the rest of you, Debbie has fantastic stories on TG Stories. Others
include Morpheus, Raven and Gunslinger. The list goes on!
(Debbie) Thanks Steve! ---blushes--- Those authors are some of my faves as
well.
(*Anne-Mal) What do you think about the animated Batman show?
(SteveZ) I love it Anne. All on tape
(*Anne-Mal) More inspiring than the Adam West show?
(SteveZ) Anne, YES!
(Debbie) What's your next story?
(SteveZ) Debbie, I have another Lois Lane story working, but other
tales need to be finished before that comes out. For one thing, I am working on
Gunnie's Fog story with him.
(Debbie) For those who don't know it, Steve is also a fantastic editor of the
written word!
(SteveZ) Blush. Debbie, can I quote you for a reference?
(Debbie) Yes Steve, you can feel free to quote me. I don't know if I carry any
weight as a reference, but yes, feel free to quote me saying you're an excellent
editor!
(Chilli) Do you have any stories in the works that are not super-hero related?
(SteveZ) Yes, but it may be a while before you see them
(Chilli) What caused you to switch into "editor" mode instead of author mode?
(SteveZ) I wanted to help others to post stories that were cleaner and
easier to read. Just get my rocks off helping others, what more can I say?
(*Anne-Mal) Which do you prefer Marvel or DC? (Maybe Archie?)
(SteveZ) Anne....DC!!!!!!! Archie is good for laughs though and for inspirations.
I still think about Cheryl Blossom.
(Debbie) There's a survey in the voting section of Fictionmania about whose
story you'd like to be in. Let me ask a variant of that question, if you could be
the character in any story, which character would you want to be?
(*Anne-Mal) Debbie, I think we all know the answer to that!
(Chilli) Does it begin with a C? (g)
(Debbie) Anne, I meant the story of another TG author, not a Batman story. :)
(*Anne-Mal) Do you feel any qualms about using someone else's characters?
(SteveZ) Anne, if you mean the way I use DC and other owned characters, no. I
do not see where I am violating their copyrights by doing fanfics.
(*Anne-Mal) No, not in that way. The characters are not your own, you are just
borrowing them.
(rebel1) Batman and Catwoman like Sherlock Holmes will live forever. I think
that they are universal characters.
(SteveZ) Oh, like the wizard from SRU. If the authors have a universe begging
to be added to, I do borrow them.
(*Anne-Mal) Right, you don't get to feel like a mother! You're only a
baby-sitter.
(SteveZ) Well, if you're using non-original characters, you are sort of. You do
have to be careful how you use them.
(Debbie) I respectfully disagree with Anne's point about being a baby-sitter. The
character's arc within your story is entirely your own. You may have to stay
within the "basic model" of who/what the character is, but you create the
storyline, the character's arc and the resolution/moral. Take James T. Kirk as he
appeared in Star Trek: Generations. He may have been the original creation of
Gene Roddenberry, but when he appeared in the movie he was not the same
character that had been created almost 30 years earlier.
(SteveZ) Good point!
(*Anne-Mal) But like Steve says, the SRU Wizard. no matter in which story he
appears in, is still Bill Hart's child!
(SteveZ) And has to be used in a certain way.
(Darkside) That's very true. I wonder if Bill Hart realized what he'd created
when he wrote the first SRU story?
(SteveZ) At that time, it appeared on the TSA.
(Debbie) Sherlock Holmes the child of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, but who and
what the character is, is totally the author's purview within the story. Only the
responsibility level of the author will ensure the original shaping of the character
remains. In that respect, Steve is far more than just a baby-sitter.
(SteveZ) I like your points, Debbie! Of course the way I use comic characters...
(LizBennett) [brb]
(SteveZ) Liz, brb? Oh be right back, silly me. It took me a while to figure out
what ROTFLMHO meant.

(Debbie) In a way, I think it is more difficult to write using someone else's
characters because of the very limitations we're discussing, when I write, I'm
free to do what I will with my characters. No limits.
(SteveZ) Debbie, that is why I need to broaden my outlook.
(*Anne-Mal) Not to step on any toes but Steve mostly writes for a free site,
while Debbie writes for a pay one. Do either of you have a reason for that?
(SteveZ) Anne, a few of my stories are on that site also. It pays for my
membership.
(*Anne-Mal) Great! Could you give out the titles?
(SteveZ) There isn't really any reason to go to TG Stories to see my
work, when all of them are on Super's site. Now back to your question, I write
for Fictionmania because all my stories are relatively short. To be paid for them
the way Debbie and Gunny do requires long, involved stories. Pam has selected
a few of mine to post there.
(Debbie) First let me say that I've written three stories (one long, two short) for
the TG Fiction mailing list. I will e-mail a copy of the long story "Fan Letter -
Revenge of the Real Girls" to Steve, for editing and posting on Fictionmania
later this week. I do know that Mindy wants to post this!
(SteveZ) I can't wait!
(Debbie) It may need some heavy editing (smile) And I intend to submit another
story to the TG fiction e-mail list in the near future. So I guess I'm not entirely
mercenary. Now Anne, are you asking me why I am taking money for
something I spend hours and hours laboring over, when there is a buyer, willing
to pay me for it? (Not all that much, by the way.)
(*Anne-Mal) I have no problem with someone working for money, it's the evil
thing we all do!
(SteveZ) With my work situation, I may have to write for money, soon.
(*Anne-Mal) I just wondered if the motivations were different.
(Debbie) It used to be I wrote just for me, didn't share my work in
this area with anyone as I write other works for pay. But when I found the
opportunity to be paid for writing TG fiction, I leapt at it. I assure you it won't
make me rich. *Smile*
By the way, I didn't intend to steal the thunder from Steve's author chat, I just
came to give my support, because I think Steve is atalented writer.

(*Anne-Mal) Do you get more comments from people on the paysite or the free
site?
(SteveZ) Anne, I don't know about Debbie, but Pam doesn't post e-mail
addresses with the stories, so she probably doesn't get any comments other
than from people like me that know her address. Gunslinger gets no replies
other than from me and a couple others.
(bashful) I have a suggestion, how about a review chat session. Have a each
writer pick one of their stories and a list is made for a reading list. Everybody
who wants to participate reads those stories and a chat night is picked so that
these stories are discussed.
(SteveZ) Interesting idea.
(LizBennett) Bash, that's interesting, like an academic seminar on a fixed reading.
Good idea!
(Regal) Not bad, Bashful. It would have to be well announced to get the best
effect.
(bashful) Right Regal, it would take some commitment on the part of the
participants but it might well be worth it!
(LizBennett) It would have to be moderated, or led, or it will be a
free-for-all.
(Regal) Authors can also discuss how the story they picked was developed, any
interesting background, etc.
(bashful) The idea has lots of possibilities! I have seen a number of questions
from people who admitted they have never read the stories of the guest!
Authors just like to get comments!
(SteveZ) I might add that Eric is one of the few that replies to almost everything I write.
(*Anne-Mal) Eric replies to everything!
(SteveZ) Eric is a professional reader! So Anne, I would like to go out in style!

(SteveZ) To all my fans, please be patient for stories, because I am trying hard
to make them better. I am also doing a lot of other authors the favor of editing
their own works for them, so that is taking up a lot of my time. But I am still
