First I want to say 'thank you' to those who invited me here, it is a pleasure. I thought I would start with a short bio. I'm 41 years old and a life long crossdresser. Professionally, I have worked in the film and television industry for roughly 20 years, 15 years as a creative executive and 5 years as a writer. I have sold my work, but nothing has been made. I also have extensive experience in the publishing industry. I am engaged and am open about my CDing. For those of you who do not know, I also run a pay TG story site called TGStories. Thank you all for coming! Feel free to ask away! Please feel free to ask anything at all, there is no subject matter that I won't address on some level. (SteveZ) Pam, I have asked you a few times about whether or not you'd like to post any more of my stories, but I've never heard back from you? (Pam of TGStories) Hi Steve, you are on my list of things to do! Your Batman story is waiting to be published on the site, unfortunately I need to give the new stories my first attention and the last few weeks I have had to deal with a lot of technical problems. (SteveZ) I presume you've noticed how good DebbieL's stories look now, I sure wish Gunny would let me edit for him, also. (sue) Pam, any reason why there is no way to provide direct feedback to an author unless one sends e-mail through the Administrator? Several authors have mentioned they don't get feedback. (Pam of TGStories) I almost always forward feedback to authors when it is sent. I view the site as magazine and to that end I like to keep things neat. (Mindy) Where did the idea to create a pay site come from? (Pam of TGStories) Ummm...that is a long answer. I have been on-line since 1982 on CompuServe. When BBS' where around I would go to FemNet all the time. Also, I have been buying fiction from Empathy, Sandy, etc. since I was 18. The idea for a pay site, at first, was just my way of creating a greater incentive for writers. It also dove tailed into my realization that the internet was an expending medium and fit nicely with my own skills and background. I had planed to write many of the stories in the beginning, but time has not allowed that to happen. (CleoK) You mentioned you viewed your site as a "magazine", have you considered making a newsletter in print to supplement the site? (Pam of TGStories) I have considered many things, some of which are an ongoing TG graphic comic strip, audio stories and creating small TG themed films. All of which I hope to do. It is really a matter of the feedback and desire I get from people. The problem with the internet is that it is changing so fast, it is hard to know what people are going to want and if the technology is worth the trouble. Of these ideas, I am really interested in making audio stories, but I have no idea if people would listen to them. Although I have toyed with the idea of hard copy stories and things like newsletters, I don't seem to get the sense that people would be interested at the moment. (Lorna) Pam, for submittals you seem to require a lot of 'personal' info that many of us are reluctant to provide. Is this necessary? (Pam of TGStories) Well, the only reason I need personal information is that I have to cut a check and send it somewhere. I have no need or desire, for personal information otherwise. (Max) Do you think Fictionmania's popularity will harm your growth? (Pam of TGStories) I am sure, on some level, that Fictionmania has some effect on growth, but in truth I don't ever really think about it. In my mind they are two very different things. It is like asking me if US magazine hurts PEOPLE sales. They are just different animals. (Max) Well, I first found the TGStories and Nifty, when I saw I needed to pay for them I searched for a free option, a college student doesn't have that much free cash. (Mindy) Max, you can't find what Pam posts on Fictionmania! (Pam of TGStories) As well, you should. That is what a free market is all about. Let me just say this also, the internet is a BIG place. I am sure there will be other sites, both pay and free. Both have their place. I, personally, can only handle a certain amount of growth, so I am not looking to corner the market. (sue) Do you feel your subscriber growth has reached it's plateau, hence the need to experiment with some new avenues of interest for the site? (Pam of TGStories) No. The site has grown at sort of a constant rate more or less. The new avenues just make it fun for me. Frankly, no one is ever going to get rich by catering to the CD and TG crowd. We are a tiny, tiny, tiny market. If I didn't enjoy this, it would no be worth it. (Newgirl) Pam, it seems that we haven't been getting a lot of stories lately on your site? (Pam of TGStories) I am glad you brought that up Newgirl. It gives me a chance to rant a little and talk about the internet. Most of my time is spent with administration and the stupid, very stupid way the internet is set up! In the last 3 weeks I have been having major server problems which have cobbled up my time. I don't think most people realize how much is involved in keep all the balls in the air. Although there is nothing but hype out in the real world about E-commerce and the such, on a practical level it is still filled with daily problems and everyone has different idea of how things should work. There are bandwidth problems, server problems etc. This doesn't include all the e-mail I get from people who are having problems with their browsers, password, etc. But, as for the stories, as soon as I nail down this problems, the stories should be back up to speed. (Mindy) Many here are savvy with the net, but you would not believe the questions I get! It is nice to hear that you have the same problems! :) (Pam of TGStories) I have had people e-mail me with the question "How do I e- mail you?" (Newgirl) I'm not trying to complain and I do enjoy your site, but Mindy puts up like 3 stories a day. (Pam of TGStories) Well, I will never put up three stories a day. I would go broke fast. But I would hope to put up 5 new stories a week at least. (sue) Do you find it difficult to get the "public domain" type stories lately? There seem to be fewer and fewer of them. (Pam of TGStories) Ummm... Well, I always assumed there would be fewer and fewer. Many of the stories that were floating around were written 10-15 years ago. They started on FemNet and then made their way to Mindy's BBS and then showed up on the net, but 5 years ago there much fewer people, so finding stories was not a problem. Now, people have read most of the stories that are out there, so I mostly rely on the writers I pay. Also, I just don't think people would come to the site if there were only stories taken from the net. Of course, there are those stories that I think are so good that they deserve to be up any where. The Professor's Ovid series is one of those for example. (Bashful) What kind of stories do you buy? Are they different types than are found on Fictionmania? (Pam of TGStories) Ummm... Let me answer that question this way. I have what I call the SIGNATURE SERIES. It includes "Presto Changeo Girlo", "My First Dress", "TG Teenybopper", "Tomorrow's Woman", " Sissy Little Me" and "She Made Me Like Her". Hopefully, the titles explain themselves. What I try to do is offer a range of themes and tastes. Having said that "Presto Changeo Girlo" is what I get most of! It just seems to be the area people like to write and read. (Bashful) Are they mostly CD/TV? (Pam of TGStories) Umm. Well, they are all TG in nature. So of course they involve CDing. Some are just CDing and others involve body change. (Bashful) Thanks! (Pam of TGStories) Well, the site is doing fine, but I haven't given up my day job. :) (*Anne-Mal) Why do you call it Signature Series? (Pam of TGStories) I thought the title SIGNATURE SERIES was catchy! (Syela) Are your writers' guidelines available to non-subscribers? (Pam of TGStories) I take a look at each story as it comes to me. One of my writers, MOUNTAINEER, has the most unique style. I would have never gone and looked for that, but I am glad he found me! (Syela) What rights do you purchase? (first/reprint, exclusive/non, one- time/annual/perpetual) (Pam of TGStories) I retain all rights when I purchase a story. However, if a writer has concerns, I try to work with them. (Syela) What do you pay? (Pam of TGStories) Well, I won't talk about pay in open because I don't feel that it would be fair to the writers who I work with. If you are interested, e- mail me and we can discuss it. (Pam of TGStories) No. It was my plan to write many of the stories and it is still my plan to write stories, but the running of the site has taken much more time then I would have thought. (Andy) How many stories do you have on your site? (Pam of TGStories) How many stories? I guess I should know this. I would say roughly 200. Although I may be off. I don't think it is less... (Andy) How searchable are the archives? (Pam of TGStories) I do not have a search engine. But the stories are listed by title and also by date and by theme, i.e.. Signature Series. (Andy) Do you have chat rooms, message boards or similar forums? (Pam of TGStories) I have very intentionally tried to keep the site simple. Frankly, much of the structure of sites on the net make me nuts. You go round and round and see the same information over and over. So I have tried to keep everything very linear. (Wendy-J) Pam, I know that talking money is rather gauche, but many are curious as to why you charge? (Pam of TGStories) So that I can make money. (Wendy-J) Can you say what some of your costs are? (Pam of TGStories) To begin with, I don't make much and there have been months when I lost money. I don't think people realize how expensive the net is! Fictionmania is supported by Mindy and I am sure it costs her at least $500 a month! Everything costs! The server, the company that process the credit cards, the bank that handles the credit cards. There are always problems and it requires a lot of work. Simply put, it is like any small business. (Newgirl) I for one am very grateful to Mindy, but I also have no problem with the small amount of money you charge for the enjoyment you bring to me! (Pam of TGStories) I personally think my pay scale is on par with other TG fiction companies. In fact I think I pay more. Reluctant Press pays $2 a printed page. (Wendy-J) So you don't even have your own POP then, you lease it? (Pam of TGStories) Wendy, if you mean do I have a server, the answer is no. I contract out. (Karyn) Do you think that the days of the free story site are numbered given costs and censorship pressures? Pam of TGStories) I don't think censorship is the biggest problem for free sites, it is going to be cost. If you start to look at the numbers and think about how many people are coming on to the net every day, the volume is staggering. Every time you add a story and get on new reader the site doesn't just expand by that one reader it also expands by that one story. Sort of reader times stories equals added usage. I think Mindy has mentioned the problems in keeping things running. Besides money, she also has to spend her time making the site work. For instance. I opened my e-mail box today after a 3 day weekend and I had 217 messages waiting for me! Now a lot of them are just logs and things like that, but I still had to file them. So some of the questions I am asking myself these days, are how do I hire some one, can I afford it and can I afford not to do it! (Karyn) Censorship is still an issue though, look what happened to the ASS repository? (Pam of TGStories) As to censorship, it is pretty hard to walk on First Amendment rights. So I am not really worried. (FallenAngel) Do you get requests for authors that don't usually appear on your site? (Pam of TGStories) Yes, I do get stuff all the time that I think sucks and I say "no thanks." (FallenAngel) What has been your most popular story to date on your site? (Pam of TGStories) That is really hard to say. You really can't measure how much some one enjoy a story and the hits only mean that someone opened the story up. In general, the new stories are read like crazy and then fall off. (Bashful) Do you have your writers produce certain stories or is it up to them? (Pam of TGStories) It is pretty much up to the writers to write what they want. But, I now have a relationship with most of them, so it is really an on going conversation. I did lay down a rule about 3 months ago when everyone was writing cop stories, "Less Bullets; More blondes"! (Bashful) Is "Presto Changeo Girlo" a magic 'universe' where stories are placed? (Pam of TGStories) Presto Changeo is just a theme. Stories that contain magic body change or some sort of special power. (Syela) You said you try to offer a range of themes. How broad? Do you have voluntary TF's, strong proactive MTF's or FTM erotica as well? (Pam of TGStories) Well, there is a little (very little) FTM. I have tried to include every day stories of CDing as well as Submissive stories. I have a contest area where people can enter story they would like to see written and then members vote on what they would like to see written. I try very hard to listen to what people what to see. If there was a demand for something that was not getting written, I would have it written. There are certain types of stories that most CD or TG people want to read and I try to provide them, but I also try to provide a range of story themes. To me there is a big difference between a story where the central character is a submissive whose wife makes him run around in 5 inch heels and a story where the main character is change by a magic rock. But both seems to be in demand. Also, there are stories of people who helped in their CDing in very ordinary ways. There is a series right now about a teenage boy who is dressed like a cheerleader by his baby sitter and convinced to go to a basketball game. As I mentioned before I see this as a magazine. To that end, I try to mold and balance the stories so that there is something for everyone. As the site grows, I want the storyline to cover as much ground as possible. But the site is really a living thing. I try to give it a certain amount of direction and then I stand back to see what happens. (Wendy-J) You mentioned you received logs, that has a tendency to scare off the pro-privacy types. What types of logs were you talking about? (Pam of TGStories) Oh, I just meant logs telling me the site is running smoothly and things like that. Sort of like six o'clock and all is well type logs. As for privacy, names and address are never given out and are not on the site. (CleoK) What did you mean by "audio" stories? Stories with various actors and actresses for the voices? How would you do that? (Pam of TGStories) Yes, that is what I meant. Streaming audio using RealAudio and things like that. There is an x rated site called Danni's Hard drive. She does small little movies and spoofs. She did one on Star Wars called "Boobs in Space". I would like to do things like that. I am just waiting for the technology to get a little stronger and for computer so catch up. (CleoK) Cool. sort of like a TG "War of the Worlds" bit! (Mindy) Streaming audio is the next big wave on the internet! Check out nascar.com a week from Sunday. You can get up to 10 cars pit audio to a driver live! (Pam of TGStories) I have already put up a streaming video of the Holiday Inn Commercial and the Clothes Time commercial. The Holiday Inn commercial came out showing a Transsexual and talking about how they are making over the Holiday Inns. The Clothes Time is a CD dancing who you think is a girl until he strips! (Mindy) You read a ton of stories and you ask for stories to be written. If you could ask them to do anything for you right now what would it be? (Pam of TGStories) Fix my server! Just kidding. For 10 years I worked in the film and television industry reading scripts as a senior VP of development. So, in essence I am doing many of the same things with the site I did as an executive. I have always been amazed at how lazy some writers are. If you are going to submit work and for your own sense of pride, make sure that it is as tight as can be. This means check spelling, grammar, etc. There is nothing worse than having to correct someone's story for silly spelling mistakes. Many of you know Gunslinger, who I think is a really good writer, but in truth, the thing about him that makes him really exceptional is how consistent and reliable he is. I am always, amazed and impressed with that fact that he can write an entire story in a day and it is not only a good read, but is also checked for spelling and grammar. He makes my life easy! As for plots, I am always open to reading work. I look for people who have a clear voice, but if a story is not formatted and it is messy, I will not take the time to read it. Writing is a living skill. A writer who understands that it is the reader and not his ego that is central to the story and who can deliver the same level of work over a period of time is gold! (jcg) A comment on the "silly spelling mistakes". I sold you a story a while back under a different name and one of the edits that was made when it was posted was to change the perfectly correct word "glans" (for tip of penis) to "glands", that is the result of using automated spell checkers! (Pam of TGStories) That is because I run the stories through a spell checker. (jcg) I'm curious, do you have any method in place to rank your authors? Fictionmania has a search feature that yields the stories getting the most hits, do you use anything like that? Is it basically your personal taste on which stories or authors get picked for the site? (Pam of TGStories) Well, I do act as an editor, so on some level it certainly reflects my taste, but my main concern has always been quality, not storylines. If I think a story is good, I put it up. But, I think your are also asking me something else. Which is, to what degree can a writer know how he/she is ranked. The answer is, you can't. If you look at the number of times some stories are read, you realize that most of the people who are reading the stories are readers you never hear from. My main concern is that the average reader comes on the site and has a good reading experience. I am not trying to provide a haven for writers. Of course, I want the writers to feel good about their work and I want to have a strong relationship with the writers, but the site is not for the writers, it is for the readers. (jcg) Exactly. How can a writer know whether she is pleasing the readers if you have no idea how many liked the story? (Pam of TGStories) I think that is a hard question. One could also ask, how can a writer know that his article is read in a magazine when it is published. You can't really. And I would also say, that even with a feedback page, you still really can not know. Because the people who are going to give you feedback are the same people who take part in these discussions and mailing lists, etc. I think it is one of the great banes of being a writer that you never really know if you are liked. People are still debating Hemingway. Frankly, I get very few comments expect when people aren't getting what they want. Then it is like, "I'm tired of all the sissy stories!" or "What happened to all the sissy stories!" I think as a writer you do what most people here do, you give your work to people you trust and you hope they are being honest with you in their comments. Most writers I know who have worked professionally still stress out over their writing. When Shane Black wrote the first "Lethal Weapon" movie, he kept a little book letting him know how long he could live on the money he made if he never got hired again! (jcg) Thanks! (Pam of TGStories) Some are X rated, I don't know about XXX (not sure what that is), but I don't censor. It is really up to the writer. What ever tickles their fancy. (Bashful) Any "no sex" stories? (Pam of TGStories) There certainly are stories with minimal sex. (regal) On the Newsgroups, you will sometimes post parts of a story to advertise TGStories, but the same post will be posted six or seven times in a row. Why? Isn't this spamming? (Pam of TGStories) There is no such thing as Spam in a Newsgroup. Spam is really something that is related to e-mail. I am sure to a certain extent what I do is annoying to some. The problem with Newsgroups is that not all posts make it through. When I put teasers up, they are very unreliable. Sometimes they all come up, other times not. It also depends on who your provider is. Newsgroups are a very odd creature. There is no real center and there is no one really in control, but I really don't feel that bad about putting up multiple postings. The Newsgroups are such a clutter now, I am not sure how functional they are any more. (FallenAngel) You've been doing essentially an infommercial here about your site, yet you've had nothing to say about Mindy and Fictionmania. Why? (Mindy) She was invited to! She owes Fictionmania not a peep! This is her chat, mine is later this month. (Pam of TGStories) I don't have a problem answering that question, but I am not sure what else I would say about Mindy or Fictionmania. It is a very good site, that seems self evident. (FallenAngel) I would like an opinion from one site manager to those of us who populate Fictionmania what she thinks of this site. (Pam of TGStories) I think the site is great. I don't see it as one being better then the other. They are just very different. Again, I will use my PEOPLE and US magazine metaphor. There is growing audience of people who are going to be looking for many different outlets. Like I said, I like Fictionmania. I am not sure what type of comments you are looking for. (FallenAngel) What about Fictionmania works well, in your opinion? (Pam of TGStories) I think the site seems to work very well. I am not sure if you are asking me about the technical aspects, the design or the writing? (FallenAngel) Everything! You must browse many sites to see what is effective and what isn't. I'd like to know what you think is effective here? (Pam of TGStories) I know what you are asking, but I think you are missing what I am saying. I really do NOT judge other sites. They are all just different. I am not being evasive. It is just the truth. It is like asking me if I like NBC or CBS for television. We are both dealing in TG fiction, but we have different ways of doing things. I could go on for hours about the technical aspects of both site, the pros and cons, but it would be a huge bore. (*Anne-Mal) No it wouldn't Pam, just save something for the next time! (Pam of TGStories) Angel, I have writers who I work with. They come to me to help them make money. Many of them also write stories which are posted on the TG-mailing list. They do this because they want or need to have feedback from their peers. There are all types of needs, I am just trying to fill some! (Carol__Collins) You said that you were a script reader for the movie/television industry, can you give advice on how to get a story to the right person for a TV production company, like the Outer Limits? (Pam of TGStories) Carol, I can't. The best thing you can do is to get a good agent. (Carol__Collins) How? (Pam of TGStories) There is no good answer and I have spent many an hour on panels answering just that question. Really the simple answer is you do everything, then you do it again, then you do it again and you don't sleep. (*Anne-Mal) Okay, my turn to ask questions! How active is the membership of your site? (Pam of TGStories) What do you mean when you say active? (*Anne-Mal) People here at Fictionmania complain about lack of feedback, is there much on your site? (Pam of TGStories) Ahhh... No, there is very little and I have poked and prodded a lot. (*Anne-Mal) So things are the same! (Pam of TGStories) I think people come to read and then don't want to be bothered. Personally, I would love more feedback. I have a newsletter page and I have asked for opinions about doing comic strips and the such, 3 people wrote me. (*Anne-Mal) I know that you don't want to say how many members your have, but could you say about what percent keep their membership? (Pam of TGStories) I would say about 60%. (*Anne-Mal) That sounds pretty good! (Pam of TGStories) Membership does drops off a lot at the end of the school year. So I know that I have a lot of people in collage.
