(Brandy) If you read my stuff, you know I get long winded. This may be the same. And I'm not my favorite author by a long shot, so I may talk about others a lot. That's about all I have to say to open, so NQ! (Bashful) Have you been published, if so where and when, if not, would you like to be? (Brandy) The first "real" story I wrote, I've never posted, because I've been trying to get it published commercially. Other than that, only technical stuff. (Bashful) Was it TG or TF? (Brandy) TG, Magic. Husband becomes wife, and vice versa, but not in their original bodies. New ones, it also has dragons, swords, and fun stuff like that! (Julie) How do you handle when the characters of your stories don't do what you want them to, or even stop altogether? (Brandy) I always thought that was a "cute" sort of thing to say about writing, until I started. Now, they do indeed take a life of their own. Maybe that's why I'm so long winded. It takes a while to get them back on track. I haven't had any characters bail on me yet, though. I'll have to watch for that. (PJ) My question has two parts; general then specific. Generally; what drives your need to write? Specifically; what drives your ability to write such wonderful T* eroticism? (Brandy) For the first, I got bored at work, and found out that writing is fun. For the second, well, I guess you could say I'm not a very nice person. Fun, maybe, but not very nice. (PJ) WHOA! Defend that second premise, please! (Brandy) I've said several times that I have a hard time telling the difference between my fantasies and my fears. Exploring them is sort of, erotic, at least to me and I'd rather be good, than nice! So that's where the stuff in the stories comes from, I guess. Dreams unrealized in real life, that spill through my fingers into words that make them a little closer to real. (Brandy) For lots and lots of wishes. (*Wendy-J) Good Answer! (Bashful) No fair, just one! (Brandy) In all honesty, I have thought about this, and my answer would be happiness for my SO. Not the mindless happiness of soma (A reference to Brave New World), but true fulfillment. I work harder at that than at any story I've ever written, but, as the writers know, even hard work can be rewarding. (*Wendy-J) Another good answer! (Bashful) You are a VERY NICE person Brandy! (Nostrumo) Well, you admitted that you have a SO and so my question is, is your story "Bosom Bondage Buddies" based on this relationship? (Brandy) No. Except that Kelly is pretty noble, and so is my SO. But she's really a lot more like Sarah, in "Lady of the Rings". With a bit of the strength that Ellen put into Brittany. (Nostrumo) I think that Brandy is in her way also noble. Does that go the same for you? (Brandy) I try to be. It's a lot easier to write about someone noble, than act it out. (Anne-Mal) Have you ever had any of your stories 'stolen', posted on another website? How does this make you feel? (Brandy) I found one of my stories, butchered, on another site. It bothered me a lot more than I thought it would. The story had large chunks verbatim, interspersed with things I never wrote, and with lots left out. It was pretty horrible. I wrote the writer and asked her to remove the story. She de-linked it so you can't get there without the URL, so that's about as good as I could expect, I guess. I've also found them posted to sites I never authorized, but I guess I'm always flattered that someone is even interested. (Anne-Mal) The ones that were straight posts, were you credited as the author? (Brandy) Yes, at least the ones I knew about. Oh, Nostrumo posted several of my stories to the Newsgroups, but he did that for me, when I asked. (Nostrumo) :) (Brandy) I don't get into any of the pay sites, so I don't know what's there. (*Wendy-J) Could the Newsgroups be the reason for the posts do you think? (Brandy) Could be. Like I said, if they keep it intact, I don't really mind. It's flattering. Mostly people ask, though. Things like archiving the SRU story I wrote in an SRU archive. Stuff like that. (Tigger) Hi Brandy! Is there a story out there that you feel a need to write, or want to write, but have held off on it? If so, what is it and why have you held off? (Brandy) Wow, that's a great question! (Tigger) *Purrrrr* (Brandy) I wish I had a great answer! I never know what I'm going to write, until I'm in the middle of it, except for long term projects like "Lady". Most of my stories start as twiddles, then all of the sudden they're taking off. I guess I'd like to write something mainstream that convinces people that those who understand both sides of gender are more competent than the narrow-minded. Where have we heard that before?) (Tigger) Dunno, where? (Brandy) I'm sort of a one-trick pony, at least on theme. Aside from the message, I'd like to write a really funny story, but that's really hard. Humor needs a crowd. (Tigger) Thanks, Brandy! (Brandy) Let me answer my own question for a moment, if you will indulge me. Who are my favorite authors? Since two out of three are here, I don't want to waste the opportunity. PJ writes the most vivid, compelling scenes I could ever imagine. After you read them, you feel like you were there. Not just the photographic description, but the mood and everything. Things I wouldn't even notice. (PJ) (Which stories have you been reading?) >;P (Brandy) I swear that I could recognize Cathy Demure, or Pamela on the street if I saw them. And I'd turn around and follow ToniCD. Ellen Hayes has these devastating insights into what it means to be human. After I read them I say, "That is SO TRUE!" And then I smack myself for not seeing it on my own! She puts so much between the lines, things that you know without reading. (ehayes) *Blushes* (Brandy) And The Professor is absolutely the best at plotting out a story. It truly takes Jovian wisdom to see the perfection of his "punishments". Yet, I never really see them coming, even though afterwards, you look back and see that the story got there by a wonderfully direct route. Anyway, I read anything those three write, without hesitation, and learn something every single time. I have some very wonderful friends who write, and I hope they will forgive me for not putting them in the same category, but I don't even put myself in that category. One of the reasons I "volunteered" to do a chat was so I could say that to everyone. But, enough soap-boxing on my heroes. Wow, what a conversation stopper! (Nostrumo) *Chuckle* (jan) Some of your stories are really loooong opuses (opi? LOL), do you ever lose steam part way through? How do you keep plugging away to the finish line? (PJ) (Wasn't Opi the kid on Andy Griffith?) (jan) PJ! *Smirgle* (Nostrumo) (No it's Grandpa in German!) ;) (Brandy) I don't always. "Lady of the Rings" has been stalled for a long time. Neither Ellen nor I are motivated on it right now. Mostly I have a couple of things going at once, and work on what I can. What I do, is usually write a couple of chapters to introduce myself to the characters. Then I write out an outline of the rest. That keeps me cranking, if the Muse is anywhere about. Doesn't always work, though. (jan) I hear that! :( (Brandy) I worked with a real, grown up adult named Opie. So people actually inflict that on their kids. Can you believe it? (Nostrumo) Well, you admitted it yourself that you work with others on stories. How do they come to you or you to them? Is this teamwork something you would like to enlarge? (Brandy) Mostly I write a fan letter to someone. Some people have written back. (Nostrumo) No, it can not be that easy! (Brandy) Except on "Lady of the Rings", my collaborations have really just been kibitzing from the sidelines. (Nostrumo) But very well thought and cherished! (Brandy) On "Lady", Ellen and I trade real versions of the chapters. Other than that, it's mostly been advice. Sometimes (on my part) long-winded advice! (Tigger) Always EXCELLENT advice! TRUST me!! (Nostrumo) That's what I heard! :) (Brandy) As far as expanding it. I'll offer free advice to anyone. And it's darn well worth it! (jan) LOL (ehayes) At least Brandy's advice makes you think! So, that's how I ended up sharing ideas. My first letter to both Ellen and PJ was a flat-out fan letter. Sharing ideas came later and goodness knows if someone writes to me, I'll write back with all sorts of comments! I'm long- winded, don't you know! (Nostrumo) But I like them! :) (Brandy) Oh, by the way. Sometimes people ask ME to collaborate. For some reason. Isn't it a natural part of humans to wonder about what might have been? (Brandy) I subscribe to the idea that no one is 100% male, or 100% female. Understanding the other side is like any other knowledge. It's useful to have in your background. I'd hate to be forced to follow a particular line as much as I hate being told I can't. I don't know if that's normal or not. But I believe a lot of creative people share that attitude. I don't suppose there's a greater wonder out there, than what "the other side" is like, so I guess a lot of us dabble in that at least sometimes. (ehayes) "The other side". You mean, normal people? =) (Bashful) Why do some people get so upset with the idea of TG. We have been accused of being pornographers, even the sex free stories. Is TG porno? (Brandy) I'd like to think that even the erotic stories are not automatically porno. Part of that perception is due to lack of understanding and hypocrisy. Cross-dressing is exactly as "wrong", in sin context, as heterosexual sex outside of marriage, but James Bond does it all the time without being considered pornographic. (PJ) (James Bond is CD? I must have missed a few movies!) (Brandy) I expect it's awfully convenient to be able to pick and choose what you consider sinful, or "wrong" in whatever code you claim. Mostly, it's fear of the unknown, I suppose. That's really disappointing, since so much of what it means to be human is to embrace and overcome the unknown. (Anne-Mal) You have a website, do you encourage others to have one? Have you had any problems because you have one? (Brandy) Sure, websites can be fun. Actually, Ellen set that up for me so that we could collaborate on "Lady". After that, I just got to foolin around, teaching myself some HTML. The only problems I've had have been when the system is down. Of course, I may have made a few, um, mistakes on what I told Geocities. The first time I really read the rules, was when they were bought by Yahooie and people (rightly so) were upset on the conditions. I must have, um, missed, quite a few rules along the way. So I suppose I could get in trouble, but none yet. (ehayes) Rules? Oh, did I forget to mention those? (Brandy) I did tone down a few of my illustrations, looking to avoid potential trouble. Most of what I do is post files at work, so I can work at them at home, and vice versa. Some people review things for me that way, too. After a while, writing to the illustrations got the story going again. (starhawk) Using what? Photoshop? (Brandy) Oh, no. Much too simple for that. (Nostrumo) From your web page, it's obvious that you are a visual and sensitive person, but what ticks you for ideas? Pictures, music, other sensory experiences like smell, etc. (Brandy) I'm partially deaf, so music has never been a very big thing for me. Unfortunately. Most of my images are visual. Sometimes I put them on paper, but the scenes play out before my eyes, first. I suppose that's one of the good things about the web. It really works well for visual things. (Nostrumo) Hm, but you said you adore PJ for his ability to write whole scenes with complete sensory life? (Brandy) Well, PJ fills in what I need. Things that won't register with me in real life, I live in PJ's stories. But I get really, really into books, too. My imagination fills in lots of gaps. (Nostrumo) What kind of Books? (Brandy) Lots of books. I had to build a new house just to store them. And I've got them piled so deep I can't even see them all to pick ones to reread. Probably 75% science fiction. Most of the rest is historical. (Nostrumo) Seems to me as your parents had denied you in early years (baby years) of Bach and other composers! (Brandy) Well, once they could afford a stereo, I'm sure they would have been willing. Too late, though. (Nostrumo) Never! :) (Brandy) I was already set in my visually-intense rut. (Nostrumo) But now contemporary means should be available! (SteveZ) Where do you stand on your newest story? (Brandy) About half done. I'm working on a comic book superhero(ine) story. And this may be a surprise, but the central character is not quite what she seems. First drafts are done through Chapter 7. (Tigger) What is your greatest strength as a writer, Brandy, and what area do you *think* need improvement? (ehayes) She needs to send more money to her collaborators! *Laughs* (Brandy) I think I can work out reasonable plots, though I still learn from every one of the Professor's stories. I think I need to work on making my characters more alive. Someone once said they were, "real, but dull." (Tigger) The "someone" was dead WRONG! You can see why I want to work with her. In real life , I'm sort of a geek. I need to learn about people with more interesting lives. (Brandy) I'm not very, um, tactful a lot of the time. Yet I hope any core of truth comes through. (Anne-Mal) So what is your connection to PJ? How did you 'encourage' PJ to write? (Brandy) Oh, I found him at Michelle Johnson's site, and told him about Fictionmania. And of course, I wrote about 97 fan letters. (ehayes) (And sent two!) (Brandy) When PJ was working on "For Lisa", he let me see a draft, and I had some suggestions. That gave me the opportunity to write more fan letters. After a while, I guess PJ started believing me. (PJ) (She's dodging the question! So many of my stories are, well, of what ever quality you judge them to be, because of Brandy's insight and encouragement. *THAT'S* the connection!) I think it's the attitude: erotica has a story, pornography doesn't. It's hard enough for the modern person to keep their personality intact as it is. We just add additional questions, ones that provoke intense thought. (Nostrumo) I beg to differ. Eroticism is something which happens in your brain and porn is more visual and much more dim. (Brandy) Bash, I guess I think it's more intent. In porn, the intent is animal impulse. Eroticism tries to stimulate the whole person. That doesn't mean that a story intended to be erotic always works, but I think you can generally see the difference in intent. (Tigger) Erotica appeals on a variety of levels and is dynamic! Porn only aims at one level, is static and therefore becomes boring after the first read. (PJ) So what's T* fiction? Porn? Eroticism? Both? Neither? Judged on a case by case basis? (Bashful) If I say a character had a stiff member, it's less "dirty" than saying he had a hard c**k in some people's opinion. (Brandy) Bash, the language thing is valid, but it's a symptom, not the core issue. Using "polite" language leaves something to the imagination, but the fantasy-fulfillment aspect can often be erotic! I agree that some of Brandy's stuff is not "nice", but I vehemently deny any of it's "bad". (Bashful) I don't think anything is "bad", but we live in a world were a few people are allowed to make decisions for many others. I prefer less explicit fiction as a subject to write, but I read a lot of the other stories. I won't reject a story based on it's rating (Brandy) Good Vs Bad T* is fairly complex. Some "good" writing is bad T*. Good writing is often emotionally powerful, captivating intellectually. It can be very demeaning, though, and I don't think that's good T*. (ehayes) So what makes bad T*/good writing? How can good writing be demeaning? (PJ) My questions too! (Julie) Don't you mean demeaning for the character? (Brandy) I think stories that show no respect for characters who have not been evil, is demeaning. If we show that lack of respect for T* characters, then the whole T* experience is denigrated. Brandy pointed out to me just how demeaning that tale is, but it is an excellent piece of technical writing, just completely demeaning to the characters, particularly the T*'ed folks. I just posted a story that demeans the main character after he is TG'd, but it was elemental to the work. (Brandy) I can appreciate the technical craft, even in stories that bother me. (PJ) Well, but if it makes a point, if it "informs" as to the human condition, isn't even being demeaning a good thing? (Julie) Not if there is no hope. (Brandy) PJ, I guess I can accept that as a possibility, but I can't think of a point that couldn't be made in a more positive way. It's not censorship to choose not to actively support something. It's only censorship if you try to actively suppress it. (Bashful) I think it might matter what the final resolution is, again, case by case basis. (PJ) I think I was about as demeaning as I could have been to Hattie (in Command Performance.) But, as Julie says, I think there was hope there as well. (Brandy) I guess I need to remember/admit that I did do one story along that line, sort of as an experiment. In "Command Performance", the key issue is that the characters who were disrespectful were not held up as positive role models. The disrespect was shown to be bad. I've had violence in my stories, but it's not shown positively. It's shown as evil. (Bashful) I demeaned my hero/ine for a reason, it shows the strength of the human spirit, I hope that is what the readers get out of it. It is not like our writing is mainstream and discussed around any dinner table that I know of! (Except mine.) Given that, we are the best judge of what we do. I agree with Mindy, she posts it all!
