bookshelves years ago and glad I did! :)

Fictionmania before it came on-line to the net?
(*Anne-Mal) Nope. I have heard about Sierra, but never went on it.

(Sir_Lee) You know, I'm working in a geography of the Well World. Anybody knows
what's the word for 'well' in Greek?
(ninja660) I had chatted with Mr. Chalker once by e-mail and got a very nice
reply from one of his family members. I wonder, how did someone get Mr. Chalker
to come here as a guest? That would've taken some doing to get a great author
like that here! :)

Varley comes to mind if you haven't read him, you missed a lot) or F. M. Busby.
There's also Mike W. Barr, a comics writer who has dealt with TG issues more
than once. (Camelot 3000 and Mantra come to mind.)

(ninja660) TgMaster, I have been in the gender fiction realm (not as a writer,
but as a reader)
for years. At one point I had a BBS set up that catered to the gender realm, but
it was fairly quiet. Yeah, it was fun! I met a lot of great people too and read
a lot of great fiction over the years!
(TgMaster) Cool ninja! I'm having a blast meeting lots of people too on
Fictionmania!
(ninja660) I was glad that Fictionmania came on-line 'cuz it saves long
distance, I used to call Fictionmania, when it was hosted by a BBS in the real
realm.
(TgMaster) So, you are the one who started the Sierra BBS that soon became
Fictionmania?
(ninja660) No, I had another BBS, not Sierra though. I used to be a regular at
Sierra! :)
(Morgan) Ahhh, the Golden Age! :) I tried to subscribe but was too illiterate
computer wise and nervous! :)
(Sir_Lee) I believe Mindy is, isn't she?
(*Anne-Mal) Yes, Sierra was Mindy's BBS!

(ninja660) There was a predecessor to Sierra BBS, called Carolyn's closet!
(TgMaster) Oh, that's right, I heard about that one!
(Dove) Carolyn's Closet? That one was in TN, I think?
(ninja660) Dove; no it was in Minneapolis, MN area
(Lorna) Carolyn's died soon after I found it.
(ninja660) Lorna, I met the BBS sysop of Carolyn's a couple of times, she had a
really big heart! :)
(Jeff) The Louve had a big TG section. It was a big BBS system, I have most of
it on CD now.
(nanomage) I am just going to sit back for the most part myself, I got lots of
teddy bears to finish before Christmas hits!

(BDerksen) Chalker's books were the first exposure I had to TF fiction. :)
(ninja660) Lorna, I do! I read it from start to finish. :) (Also read the latest
sequel to the Well World (Got it in hardcover! *Sheesh* That was a big book!))
(BDerksen) Aww, hardcover? I'll have to wait for the paperback on principle, I
never buy hardcover. :)
(Sapphire) I just got his newest last night!
(*Anne-Mal) Too bad this is not real life, you could have got it signed!
(nanomage) I always opt for the hardcover, even if I don't eat that week!
(Sir_Lee) I don't buy hardcover because of the higher shipping costs. ;-(
(Jean_Rea) Sir Lee, Uncle Hugo's is very reasonable on hardbacks and shipping is
easy too, check out their web site.
(Sir_Lee) Jean, I know, but since I live in Brazil, the shipping costs mount.
(ninja660) The hardcover editions had all the softcover versions in it! :-) I
didn't want to wait!

around 3:30. I've read he does a lot of technology research and was wondering if
he had any inside sources on high level tech. Anyone willing to field the

(Roy) Hi. I'm active on Fictionmania, but I've never read anything by Jack
Chalker. Why does everyone here love him so much?
(BDerksen) Roy, virtually all of his novels feature gratuitous physical
transformations. :)
(Roy) Good reason, BDerksen.
(Regal) Most of his stories contain transformations and sex changes, Roy. Plus,
he's a good writer. :)
(TgMaster) "The Identity Matrix" is Jack's book that really focuses on the TG
aspect.

(XoYo) Well, otherwise it's more of a snuff story than TG. Wiping someone's
memory and rewriting their personality isn't that different to killing them.

(nanomage) XoYo, I agree, personality and memory are what makes us who we are,
at the most fundamental level. In my paltry selection of stories, I always leave
the original identity intact.
(BDerksen) Same here. In fact, I've only killed off one character in the entire
corpus of my work. And that was with an ordinary bullet. :)
I've had a story idea sitting in the back of my mind for a while now involving a
wizard going on trial for "murder" after wiping someone's mind like that.

murder to stir things up a bit.

(Lynda) He used to have a S-100 based machine. I think that qualifies him as
"computer literate".

(Regal) A professional author can't read amateur fiction much. He wouldn't want
to be accused of using someone else's story or idea.

(nanomage) Regal, Jack got his start running a SF fanzine in the 60's.
(raaj) I don't know about Fictionmania, but Jack got his start as a "fen" in
Science Fiction. He has done bibliographies and other work before becoming
professional, so I think he is very appreciative of Amateurs.

(Darkside) Ninja, AF not really. An idea has to grab me first, but that's not
never. The characters have to *live* in my mind first. Otherwise it's just
