I Wish I Knew: An Anonymous Amulet Story

John Rodriguez was a man with a mission. He decided that for his one-week spring
vacation, he would spend the time rediscovering himself with a journey to the
East. He intended to meet up with his good friend, Hui Xin Fa, in Hong Kong
before departing for the wonders of China. They planned to travel to the mystic
three gorges region before it was destroyed by the construction of China's major
dam.
One week before departing for China, John Rodriguez received two letter-sized
envelopes.
The first, his American passport stamped with his Chinese visa, was entirely
expected but the second was quite unique. It seemed rather heavy but when he
opened it, out popped a silver amulet. No note, no explanation. There wasn't
even a return address. He examined the envelope intently but the only indication
of where it might be from was in the upper right corner where a stamp usually
would be. It read "Presorted First Class Mail. US Postage Paid. Service Center."
Must be some kind of marketing ploy, thought John. After all, there was always
some company trying to sell something to a college student. Then he remembered
that the fraternity that he wanted to join used secret initiation rites to
accept members. They must have accepted his application and this must be the
test to see if he were worthy to join. But what was he supposed to do with the
amulet? He figured that it was best to hold onto it. After all, he knew that Xin
Fa was part of the fraternity. He probably would reveal everything on the trip.
The week went by uneventfully. John split his time between his courses in
Chinese (he was a Chinese Studies major) and his penchant for going to the gym.
He figured that he had to continue his weightlifting if he ever hoped to make
the first string football squad. Certainly being a second stringer at UCLA was
an accomplishment but he still dreamed of being able to run out onto the field
as a starting tight end.
Soon it was Thursday, the week before Spring Break. Other friends of his were
going to Florida but John was busy packing for his first trip abroad. Luckily
for him, his economics professor had cancelled classes. This allowed John the
full day to pack and get ready. He packed his single suitcase with the clothes
that he would need for the trip and remembered to bring several film rolls for
all of the pictures that he was going to take.
That night, he boarded for Hong Kong on Cathay Pacific flight 723. He watched
one of the three films before dozing off in his coach seat. The flight attendant
awakened him for his meal and he had a pleasant discussion with the person
seated next to him about the Gorges. "Stay clear of Fuling if you value your
gender" the tall stranger told him before he deplaned.
Meeting his friend, Hui Xin Fa, at the gates of Hong Kong International Airport,
John asked what the man had meant. Xin Fa laughed and told him the story about
the gates to the "ghost city": "Apparently, there are two gates, one for men and
one for women and if you go through the wrong gate, you will find yourself in
the opposite gender before the end of the journey. It is an old wives' tale."
After a night in Hong Kong, the two friends boarded a flight to Chongxing. When
they arrived, they bought tickets for a cruiser tour of the Three Gorges region.
The cruiser tour was magnificent. The beautiful Valley of the Damned was a sight
to behold, greater in spectacle than the Grand Canyon. The tall majestic cliffs
were covered with vegetation, many untouched by humanity.
As they disembarked at Feling, the Ghost City, they realized that they were in
for a very special and privileged event. After all, not very many people could
see the Three Gorges in their entire splendor prior to it being destroyed by the
creation of the dam.
We walked up from the cruiser a lengthy flight of steps until we reached a point
where there were the fabled two gates. The guide warned the men to go to one
gate and the women to go to the other. John laughed. He told Xin Fa that we
should take our chances. The two young men proceeded to the women's gate along
with about three other brave souls. About the same number of women attempted to
cross the men's gate. While John was walking through the gate, Xin Fa said, "I
wonder why the legend is that men become women when they walk through this
gate." John said, "I wish I knew." The two friends both laughed as they exited
the gate. After all, Hui Xin Fa and his girlfriend, Tang Mei-Ling, didn't change
a bit...
