The community was still wondering whether it was rumor or
true and it was only a matter of time before the media got a hold of
it. Luckily, being an F.B.I. agent, it was not my job to keep the
media at bay, we have other people for that, I just needed to bear in
mind that a low profile was essential. Yet, it was a challenge to
keep a tight lid on a male and female high school student switching
bodies.
I arrived at the school three days after the reported
incident and my first interview was with the vice principal who was
present during the occurrence. He was a tall, confident man willing
to accommodate me and any follow up agents in our investigation.
After meeting him and discussing the incident, I learned how little
he knew. But he was the first contact that both parties had made
after the exchange.
It happened at a basketball game. A young man named David D.
Leavitt was sitting on the back bleacher seats when he
supposedly "became" Heidi A. Wurdein, one of the cheerleaders. Their
bodies had switched locations in a single moment, complete with
clothing, but "they" had remained in the same place, essentially
switching their bodies. It had happened instantaneously, with no
indication to either of them before it had happened. The first to
contact the vice principal was Heidi, in David's body. She seemed
rather frantic and almost lost consciousness when David approached.
David was far more calm, but clearly awkward as a girl. He seemed a
little shy about being in a cheerleading uniform, but told the entire
story to the vice principal while Heidi was comforted by the other
cheerleaders. The squad had quit cheering for the rest of the game
for fear of the incident repeating. As a matter of fact, as word
spread, most spectators left the game.
My first interview was to be with Heidi, still living at her
parents home, but now in David's body. She had missed three days of
school and was uncertain of when she would see fit to return. Upon
meeting this awkward young man, I was soon aware that Heidi was
willing to do anything to reverse this...phenomenon. Here she was,
now a young man, but she still wore girl's sweat pants, a t-shirt and
blue socks --all looking unusual on this much taller, male body. She
sat fidgeting in the seat across from me as I began.
"Heidi, I must first assure you that this meeting is entirely
confidential. Nothing you say will leave this room. Understood?"
"Yes."
"Very well," I said. "Tell me how it happ--"
"Sir?" she cut me off, "has this ever happened before, um,
that you know of?"
"Heidi, if it had ever happened in history, the bureau would
have known of it and I would have been notified. The only thing
similar was a farm hand in West Virginia in 1873 `exchanging'
particular personality traits and habits with a nurse he had met in
the hospital. I'm sure this case is quite different."
"So there's no cure?"
"I assure you, I will do everything I can to find the answers
to this, but I must first uncover all the facts. Now, tell me what
you know about David."
"I never really knew anything about him. He was in my math
class last year. He always hung out with that older guy who does
magic tricks, Kenneth Glochman. David was a quiet guy."
"He was? You mean he isn't now?"
"Well, he was here the other day to get some of my clothes.
That way he'd have something to wear. He didn't seem shy at all. He
practically cleared out my closet."
I thought a moment. "Heidi, do you miss your clothes?"
She got kind of embarrassed at the question. "Well, yes. He
gave me some of his stuff, but I really don't wear it. It's like I'm
giving up hope of ever being a girl again." She paused, "Last night I
tried on one of my old dresses I still have. It had never been so
tight."
"David didn't seem embarrassed about being a girl?"
"No," she responded. "He seemed almost...proud of it. He was
strutting around in my pink dress like he'd always been a girl. I
could tell he enjoyed it."
"Interesting."
When I arrived at David's house, the atmosphere was rather
different. His parents also granted me a private interview with
him. As I walked into the kitchen, I was rather shocked to see a
smiling little teenage girl with her hands folded on the tabletop
awaiting my interview. He was wearing a pink blouse and a jean skirt
with white Keds shoes.
"David," I began, "you don't really seem disheartened by
these circumstances."
"To tell you the truth, it doesn't bother me much. I mean, at
first I was really freaking out because now I'm a girl and
everything, but after a little while I just started going with the
flow."
"Do you think you're pretty?"
He was a little surprised at my question. "Well, yes,
actually. I guess I do." He gestured toward his blouse. "When Heidi
had this body she wore pink a lot. Why?"
"I'm just curious. How did your friends react to the change?"
"To tell you the truth, Kenneth is really my only friend. He
doesn't mind it, he's still my friend. In fact, he just left before
you got here."
"How much older than you is Kenneth?"
"Actually he's younger. By about six months. He just looks
older. The doctors say he is aging faster than normal. He's got
something wrong with his metabolism."
"I noticed you are wearing make up."
"Yes. I decided to try to make myself look like Heidi usually
did, just to keep it normal."
I couldn't believe how matter-of-fact he was about these
unusual circumstances. I felt he must know something that the rest
of us don't.. "I am curious. How have your parents taken this?"
"My dad hates it. I think he's in denial. The first night he
kept repeating, `it's not possible, it's not possible.' He tried
getting Heidi to confess she was really me, but she had never seen
him before. It was pretty intense before he believed us. My mom is
still a lot easier to deal with. My dad thinks I'm a freak, I think."
"Do you think people will accept you as Heidi?"
"Most people around here have heard about this, but if I had
to live as her, I could do it."
"Do you know much about her? Did she grow up here?"
"She moved here when she was three, but most of her family
lives in Vermont. So they should be easy to fool if you want to keep
a low profile on this."
"Thank you David. We'll try to keep it low key for now. I'm
curious to interview Kenneth, do you think he'd mind?"
"No," David chuckled, "he'd probably enjoy it."
By that afternoon, I managed to track down Kenneth. He was a
bit older as I expected, but he seemed a little smug. I think he
was happy that I got him out of English class to interview him, so
maybe that could account for his attitude.
"Kenneth," I began, "how well do you know David and Heidi?"
"Well, David and I were best friends since fourth grade.
Heidi was in a couple of my classes, but I didn't really know her."
"I'm looking for a connection between the two of them, was
there anything that seemed to stand out to you?"
"David kind of liked her. The fact that he switched with her
of all people was just kind of the luck of the draw, I guess."
"Luck? So is David happy that he has Heidi's body?"
"He's not down about it. I think he likes that he's closer to
her than anyone could be."
"Was there anything different about the basketball game that
may have caused this?"
"Some people said they saw lights flying above the school
that night, like UFO's or something. I don't really believe in that
stuff, but who knows?"
"Lights? I'll have to check into that."
Kenneth looked at me in deep thought. "Are there UFO's?"
"You mean aliens? No. I've got every classified record right
here in my briefcase that could possibly relate to this case. None of
them proves conclusively that aliens exist."
At that moment, I saw Kenneth twitch a little and then a look
of satisfaction came across his face. He smiled and asked, "Do you
have anymore questions?"
"Not at this time, Kenneth. Thank you for your time."
Before leaving the school, I picked up a copy of the
basketball game video from the coach. I had decided to study it in
detail to find any unusual events surrounding the switch.
That night, I watched the game tape. I watched intently in
hopes of spotting the exchange. I was a little surprised at first
because the camera caught the event perfectly. David and Kenneth
were sitting side by side at the back seats of the bleachers and the
cheerleaders had just finished a cheer. Suddenly, they switched
locations. Their new bodies were in the exact same positions as
their old bodies had been one second earlier. It didn't make any
sense. I watched it five or six times and finally figured out that I
should view it frame by frame.
Now, I know that a standard VHS video tape records at thirty
frames per second and what I saw next was impossible. At that
moment, another girl on the bleachers had reached up to brush her
hair out of her face and the frames before and after the switch event
showed the girl's hand as a motion blur. However, Heidi and David's
bodies moved at least fifteen feet in 1/30th of a second with no
motion blur, they were in perfect focus. It looked as though the
tape had been edited to skip some frames, but the rest of the crowd
was unaffected.
I analyzed that moment in the video until I found one other
oddity. Kenneth also jerked slightly at that precise moment. I was
too tired to focus anymore and went to bed.
The next morning, I thought again to the video and really
wondered why Kenneth seemed to be such a key player. That's when the
light bulb went on.
I contacted Kenneth's parents and got their family doctor's
name so I could set up a visit. My adrenaline was pumping when I got
to his office. I knew what I needed to ask.
"Sorry for taking up your time," I began, "but I need to know
some things for my investigation. Why is Kenneth aging so quickly?"
The doctor chuckled a little, "I thought you may ask that. I
was baffled when I did Kenneth's physical when he went out for
track. To be honest, I have taken some of my results to other
physicians and they believe I am playing a joke. Kenneth has no
disease that we can find, his metabolism is normal, his blood
pressure is fine. He hasn't even had a nosebleed that I know of."
"So there is nothing at all to account for his rapid aging?"
"Not a thing. It's a total mystery."
I set up my second interview with David after school hours so
that Kenneth would also be there. David sat at his kitchen table
again and now wore a yellow and blue sun dress and sandals, his make
up matched his outfit perfectly. I first asked Kenneth to show me
his best card trick. He pulled out a pad of paper and said, "I'll do
better than a card trick, get this." And he handed me the blank pad
and a pen.
"Write something on this sheet and don't let me see you do
it. As soon as you finish, say `done.'" With that, he turned around
and faced the wall.
I took the paper and wrote, "Kenneth is a track star." The
second I finished I said, "Done."
Kenneth started laughing without turning around. "That's
right," he said, "fastest in the state."
"I did my homework," I answered. Kenneth sat back down. I
got up and walked around the table glaring at the two of them. My
voice became very firm as I began acting like a military officer. "I
got the feeling from Heidi that she couldn't live with these
circumstances any longer. She couldn't live as a man and couldn't
bear a man having her body. And she asked me to do this little favor
for her." I pulled my gun from inside my vest and pointed it at a
very startled David who covered his face with recently manicured
hands. I took careful aim and, right before pulling the trigger
fixed my eyes on Kenneth. "Click!" No bullet.
Just as expected, I saw Kenneth's body instantly jerk
slightly. David pulled his hands from his soft face to look around
the room, he didn't know what to think. I examined the gun and it
was completely unloaded. I smiled at Kenneth and said, "You didn't
need to do that, they were blanks."
David and Kenneth were in awe. "How did you know?" asked
Kenneth.
"When I examined the video, I learned that you had to be the
one manipulating time. Then I saw that you were the fastest runner
in the high school's history and that you could do magic tricks. Then
I thought about how you seem to age faster than everyone. All of
these things had to do with speed. So tell me, how do you do it?"
Kenneth sighed. He obviously didn't like that his secret was
out, but he had no choice. "I can freeze time. The reason I'm older
is because it adds up. I've been all over the country in what seems
like one second to the rest of the world. It's worth it. I'm never
late."
"Could I experience this?"
"Sure," he said, "I have to be touching you." He reached out
and grabbed my hand as he tossed the pad of paper in the air as I saw
it and David freeze. I walked around the room. The first thing I
noticed was the lack of sound. Even stepping on the floor produced
no sound. I tried to speak, but heard nothing. I reached out for
the pad of paper which was frozen in mid-air with the pages flared
out. I pulled it from it's position, but found that I could re-
position it in mid-air as if it could defy gravity. It fell to the
floor as Kenneth put things in motion again.
David looked at me with Heidi's eyes. "Are you going to
arrest us?"
"Honestly, I don't think I could if I tried."
"That's right, replied Kenneth, "you can't."
"David, did you knowingly, uh, steal Heidi's body?"
Reluctantly David answered. "Yes. Kenneth used to freeze
time so I could go into her house. I tried on her cheerleading
uniform several times. I just wanted to be her."
"Kenneth, how did you make it so they'd switch bodies, not
just locations."
Kenneth replied, "David told me that he'd feel himself jerk
back into his body if I moved him while he was frozen. I came up with
the theory that he'd enter the nearest body to the spot he was before
time was frozen. That's what we did at the basketball game. David's
body absorbed the `essence' of Heidi and vice versa since it occupied
that space."
"I will have to request that you reverse this process. It's
not fair to Heidi."
"Look," said Kenneth, "David's a social outcast, Heidi is a
stuck-up snob. He deserves a break. Besides, it's not like you could
force me to switch them back. This was a favor to my friend."
"I'm sorry, but I will have to report these findings."
"Remember, I have control over a lot of things. I can make
you whoever you want to be. I can make you whoever you don't want to
be."
Now, I've never taken a bribe as a police officer or as an
agent, but this was a serious threat and a bribe combined. I could be
like David and become a teenage girl! What an amazing thought. It
occurred to me how Kenneth would be greatly beneficial to the bureau.
"Kenneth," I said, "how good are you at keeping secrets?"
"Sir," he said, "with this ability, I've kept some people's
darkest secrets from the public."
"If I make you a Federal Agent, would you switch David and
Heidi back?"
He thought for a minute while David shook his head. "I think
so," Kenneth replied, "Sure, I'd agree to that."
"No," David said, "I don't want to go back."
"Come on, David," said Kenneth, "I could be an agent."
Now keep in mind that some of my superiors at the Federal
Bureau of Investigations consider it part of their job description to
question the investigations of me and fellow agents. Special Agent
Randall is no different. So I devised a plan for him and his men. I
knew that they would have to see this amazing ability in order to
believe it, so I requested a task force of men to examine a potential
new agent. By Kenneth's request, we brought David along.
I picked the five men up from the airport and ignored their
constant demands for a debriefing. I simply ignored that policy
because I knew of the disbelief it would receive. Instead, I lead
the men to the gymnasium of the high school. The five remaining
cheerleaders on the squad were stretching on the floor for their
after school practice. Their coach was due to arrive in five minutes.
I led the men to the furthest seats in the bleachers and we
sat down. The girls were staring at the six men in suits who were
accompanied by David and Kenneth and they began whispering to each
other. Seeing Heidi's body among us, they and figured out who we
were.
"Are you guys trying to find out what happened to Heidi?" one
girl finally mustered the courage to ask.
"We hope so, ladies," Agent Randall replied. Then he leaned
toward me and whispered firmly, "Now I demand you tell us what we are
doing here."
I reached into my jacket and pulled out six syringes and
handed them to Kenneth. As Kenneth began placing one syringe on the
seat in front of each agent, Randall protested once again. "This is
an outrage. Only an agent can handle those kinds of injections, never
a civilian. Anyone injected with that drug would be unconscious for
hours."
"He's not a civilian, sir. He's our next agent, trust me." I
smiled at Kenneth as he sat down beside me. "You've read the report,
Agent Randall?"
"Yes, we all did. A teenage boy and girl switching bodies.
Frankly, it sounds like another hoax." Some of the other agents
leaned in and nodded in agreement.
"Imagine, a young man sitting right where we are at this
moment," I began. "Below is a crowd, coaches, players, cheerleaders,
and so on. The young man is curious, as a spy would be. He wants to
know all of the darkest, most minute details of each girl on the
cheerleading squad below."
"Yes, and your point?"
"Well, sir. Do you know what the girls down there are talking
about right now?"
"Of course not, we'd need equipment to hear them at this
distance."
"Mr. Randall, have you ever heard the expression `oh, to be a
fly on the wall during that conversation?'"
"Of course, we used to say that when we'd plant bugs for the
CIA."
I laughed a little. "Sir, my new friend Kenneth can provide
even better. Watch this." I leaned toward Kenneth and whispered, "I
want the blonde at the end." He smiled mischievously.
My heart began to race as I held my hand in front of Agent
Randall's eyes and snapped my fingers. I felt an instant jolt as
though my whole body had dropped off the seat. I looked at my hand
in front of Agent Randall's face and saw a thin, girl's hand with
light pink nail polish. Beyond him sat four cheerleaders in their
warm-ups all gaping at themselves and each other. We had all been
changed into the rest of the cheerleading squad, except for Agent
Randall. I heard several "thuds" on the gymnasium floor below us as
a turned to see the bodies of me and the other agents fall limp to
the floor. Everyone stared at the empty syringes in front of each
agent, except Randall, who still had his old body.
I reached back to pull my ponytail onto my shoulder. I
smiled at the lovely blonde, silky hair. I inhaled the scent of
strong, flowery perfume. I'd have to thank Kenneth later for this
unique experience. I wore tight black shorts and a t-shirt with the
word "Spirit" written across my breasts. I could feel the tight
sports bra which felt like it was supposed to keep my breasts from
moving too much while jumping and cheering. I couldn't resist
running my hand along my soft, shaven, tanned legs. The white tennis
shoes were so much more comfortable on my tiny feet than the awful
black shoes I had always worn with my suit. The other girls were
dressed the same as I, since that must have been the standard
practice outfits.
Agent Randall didn't know how to respond. He finally looked
at me and stuttered, "Young lady..."
"That's AGENT young lady, sir," I said in a harmonious young
voice. "Agent Randall, I, and the rest of your men, are in the
bodies of the young ladies who, moments ago, were doing exercises
down there." His expression was priceless.
"You're kidding!" he exclaimed. "This is impossible."
Suddenly we heard a woman's voice by the door, "Oh, my God!"
A thirty to thirty-five year old woman came running to aid the
unconscious men on the floor, it was the cheerleading coach. She
glanced up at us. "Girls, don't just sit up there. These men need
help!"
I looked at Kenneth who was cracking his knuckles in
anticipation. "What are you waiting for?" I said, "Switch her with
Agent Randall."
"No problem," he said as he reached back and grabbed David's
hand. "No problem at all." And they both instantly vanished.
Wow. That kid moves so fast, it was like he disappeared
before my very eyes. As I heard the unconscious body of Agent
Randall fall to the floor below us, I realized that Kenneth and David
should not have vanished, they should have returned...uh-oh. I
looked down at the bodies below us, I looked at the bleachers to my
left and past the shocked woman who now sat beside me on my right.
Kenneth and David were gone. The syringes were gone, but there was a
note left on the bleachers instead:
"Screw the F.B.I. Terrorists have so much more fun."
Kenneth is out there. I doubt we'll ever catch him.
