Once upon a time, it is not clear exactly when, but
probably somewhere in the transition from the later Roman
Empire and the Dark Ages, two Visigoths named Theodoric and
Engelbert were sitting around a campfire on the night of
the full moon, finishing off their dinner of freshly
butchered venison. Theodoric was the taller and heavier of
the two. Engelbert was the shorter, more thoughtful, and
relatively polite one. I said "relatively polite", since
they were both barbarians.
A Visigoth is a very different sort of person from the
Gothic kids you knew in high school. They were less clean,
and didn't dress as well. Few of them could write their own
names. If they wore any silver jewelry, it was probably
stolen.
"Dude," said Theodoric to his lifelong friend, "did you
hear something sneakin' up on us in the underbrush?"
"No, man, but I did see something movin' in that clearing
over there."
"Might be some enemy sneakin' up, like, a Vandal or an
Ostrogoth and stuff," said Theodoric. He drew his knife.
"Which way is that clearing, bro?"
"That way," said Engelbert, pointing. "I sure hope it's a,
like, Ostrogoth. We'll show them who's REALLY Gothic."
"Yeah, the freakin' posers."
Both of them silently crept over to a clump of tall bushes
at the edge of the forest clearing where the strange
movement could be seen. Theodoric peeked over the top of
the bush, and what he saw in the moonlight deeply impressed
him in a lecherous sort of way.
He saw a lovely young elf-maiden dancing in the moonlight.
She pirouetted, somersaulted, leaped, gamboled and cavorted
in a rough circle around the clearing. Her hair was black
and shining. Her skin was the color of burnished brass, and
unburdened by any kind of clothing. Her body was limber,
small and delicate, but nubile. Her ears were pointed at
the trailing edge.
"Yo, dude, check her out," whispered Theodoric.
"I think she's an elf, bro," Engelbert whispered back.
"Who cares what she is? All I see is a buck-nekkid lusty
little slut. I say we take her, dude. It goes lootin' and
pillagin'. Ya know what I mean?"
"I read you loud and clear, Theo, but she IS an elf. If we
mess with her, she might fuck us up with some of that,
like, elfin magic and shit."
"I say we take her. She's gonna love it, dude. Trust me on
this. Dude, face it, you know how short elves are. Ya gotta
figure elf men must be pretty short in the pants, too, if
ya know what I mean."
Engelbert snickered. "You got a point there, dude."
Theodoric showed no sign of noticing Engelbert's pun. "So,
let's go for it. Now stay low and no more talkin'. She
gonna work her way back over here in a minute. Then we take
her. I'll give the word."
If the dancing elf-maid realized her danger, she showed no
sign. She leaped and somersaulted and gamboled closer and
closer to the bush where they were hiding.
"Now!" Theodoric cried out. He leapt out of the bushes and
caught the elf-maiden in his arms. They collapsed onto the
grass, knocking the wind out of the elf.
She looked up at him terrified. "Stop it!" she commanded,
almost breathless. "Let me go!"
Engelbert cautiously stepped out of the bushes.
"Now just quiet down, my sweet little dancin' hottie,"
Theodoric said. "My buddy Engelbert and me, we're gonna
show you a good time tonight."
The elf had gotten her wind back. "I want nothing to do
with either of you Visigoths," she retorted. "Let me up!"
She squirmed beneath him.
"Dude," asked Engelbert, "how did she know we're, like,
Visigoths?"
Ignoring the question, Theodoric chided the elf. "Come on,
babe, you know you want it. We saw you prancin' around all
buck-naked like that. You're gonna be our little slut puppy
tonight. Ain't she, Engelbert?"
"Freakin' aye, right, Theodoric." Engelbert forgot his
earlier reservations. He and his friend would have no
trouble controlling this small, frail humanoid, who did not
seem to have the magic powers he feared.
No, no!" screamed the elf. "Let me go right now, and leave
this place, or suffer the consequences."
"Come on, babe," Theodoric coaxed. "We got a lot more to
offer you than those pitiful little wieners that elf men
got." He tried to kiss her. Disgusted, the elf turned her
head away, and redoubled her efforts to throw him off.
"Help me hold her down, Engelbert. She's getting all wiggly
and shit." Engelbert stepped up to the elf's head and held
down her arms. Theodoric paused to undo the front of his
trousers.
"Looks like you was wrong about that elf magic and shit,
huh, Engelbert," he said. Indeed, Theodoric was so
confident he hadn't even bothered to draw his hunting
knife, which was still hanging on his belt.
Suddenly the elf cried out, "In hac hora periculi juvet me
rex orodryadum!"
Engelbert was alarmed. "Dude, was that some kind of, like,
elf curse or something?" Actually the words were simply
Latin, which the elf's tribe used for magic and some other
purposes.
Suddenly both Visigoths were aware of a massive form
towering over the three of them. Judging by his facial
features, pointed ears, and impressive gray beard, the
newcomer was an old elf, but he was very tall, taller in
fact that either Theodoric or Engelbert. Under his cloak,
he wore a long tunic that seemed to be made of fresh green
leaves joined together. He spoke only two words, which the
Visigoths did not understand. "Duae feminae."
Engelbert looked in horror at this companion. Theodoric's
clothing and knife disappeared, as his body shrunk till it
was less than five feet tall. Engelbert gasped. Although
Theodoric's facial features were still recognizable, he now
had the body of a young elf-woman. Theodoric looked back at
Engelbert and screamed a high-pitched unfamiliar scream.
"Dude," Theodoric cried out in an unfamiliar high-pitched
voice, "ya know what just happened? You, like, morphed into
an elf chick."
Engelbert looked down at himself. He too was stark naked,
much shorter, and had the brown complexion of an elf. His
body now had breasts like a woman, and between his legs he
could see nothing but a triangular patch of dark hair. The
cool wind of the night whipped him between his now-smooth
thighs. He shuddered. "This is totally whack, Theodoric!"
he said, nearly weeping.
"We're, like, both elf girls, dude. I am SO freaked by
this."
The elf-maiden laughed. Her laugh was like the tinkling of
wind chimes on a spring afternoon. "It is my honor," she
proudly said, "to present His Majesty Alberic the Ninth,
King of the Elves." She bowed low. She would have
curtseyed, but that's hard to do when you're naked. "Your
Majesty," she said, "I thank you for saving me."
"My pleasure, Femella," said the King, using her elfish
name. He abruptly shrank to elf-size. His towering stature
had been a mere illusion to intimidate the Visigoths.
The elf-maiden named Theodoric looked at him fearfully.
"Your Majesty, ya gotta believe us. What we did was wrong,
and we are so sorry about what we did to one of your, like,
subjects and all. We are sorry, aren't we, Engelbert?" He
(if we may still use the word) glanced at his companion for
support.
"That's right, Your Majesty," Engelbert quickly agreed in
his new feminine-sounding voice. "Our behavior radically
sucked."
"Yeah," Theodoric continued, "and if you'll just, like,
turn us back into guys again, the same guys we used to be,
we'll stay away from elf girls, won't we, Engelbert?"
"Freakin' aye, right, Theodoric. We'll show, like, the
utmost respect."
Alberic calmly shook his head. Theodoric and Engelbert both
screamed. Their new female voices echoed through the
forest. Owls in the distance hooted back at them as if in
derision.
"Now you girls know better than to mess with elves," the
King of Elves replied.
Theodoric fell to his knees. "Please, your majesty! Ya
gotta change us back, now that we've, like, learned our
lesson and stuff."
Engelbert shuddered again at the thought of how his fellow
Visigoths would greet him now. He also sank to his knees.
"Yeah, no way we're gonna go back to our village lookin'
like this!"
Alberic eyed them generously. "Then will you both consider
joining my kingdom?"
Engelbert was intrigued. "Becoming elf chicks, like,
forever? Hmm, that might be fun." He was putting a brave
face on it. After all, he didn't have much choice. "Okay,
I'll go for it." She got back to her feet again.
Theodoric jumped to his feet. "No way!" he cried out,
looking at Engelbert with alarm.
"Check it out, dude," said the elf-maiden once known as
Engelbert. "You know how hot chicks get when they come. And
elf girls, with that close-to-nature thing they got goin'
on, they gotta come like nobody else in the world."
Theodoric lashed back angrily. "You pervert! We can't do
this. Hel-lo? We're guys."
"Not any more," said Femella the dancing elf-maiden. She
stepped forward and patted Theodoric on the shoulder. "Give
it a chance. Our King is offering you girls a new start at
life."
Theodoric did something that Engelbert had never seen him
do before. He began to cry. "Don't call me a girl," he
shouted back through his tears. "This is so wrong! This is
so whack." He turned desperately back to the King. "Please,
Your Majesty. Please."
As Theodoric wept silently. Engelbert turned to Femella and
said, "Does my butt look big?"
"No, you look fine," said Femella, smiling pleasantly. She
turned to her King. "This one, Your Majesty, is already
thinking like a female."
"Very well, then, Engelbert, welcome to the tribe," said
the King. "Your new name is Emma."
"Cool!" said Emma. "I had a grandma by that name." She
nodded to her former companion. "I'm concerned about
Theodoric, Your Majesty. He's my old buddy and we've, like,
been through everything together. It would suck if he,
like, wasn't okay with this."
Alberic nodded sagely. "Don't worry about her. The
psychological adjustment always takes a few minutes
longer."
Emma stepped over to weeping Theodoric, put a supportive
hand on his (?her) shoulder. "Theodoric, dude, we've always
been buddies, remember? Ever since we were boys. We hunted,
looted, rampaged and pillaged together. We can share this
too."
"It's okay among our people," Femella put in, "for girls to
like girls."
"Ya hear that, dude?" said Emma excitedly. "Even though
we're chicks, we can still score with the chicks."
Theodoric wiped his eyes with his hands, sniffed, and
looked up. "Your Majesty, if I can, like, be a bit of a
dyke, and stay in touch with my masculine side and stuff, I
could go for this."
"Some of my best elves are gay," said the King, smiling
indulgently. "Which is why we're often called 'the
fairies.' Welcome to the tribe. Your new name is Theodora."
"Cool," said Theodora, rising to her feet. "That name's got
a lot of class."
She looked hopefully at Femella.
"Sorry, Theodora," said Femella. "I'm not a Lesbian myself.
And even if I was, I'd go for a woman who's got some
manners."
A cold gust of nightly wind whipped through the clearing.
"You girls need clothes," Femella said. With a wave of her
hand, she conjured up a cloud of dead leaves from the
ground. As they floated in the air, the leaves turned
bright green, then linked themselves together and hung on
the shoulders of the three elf-maidens to form dresses of
verdant foliage.
"Nice," said Emma.
"So," Theodora observed, "you guys don't, like, go naked
all the time, then?"
"Of course not," said Femella. "My nude dancing is an
artistic statement, not a sexual invitation."
"It's time we started back to your village, Femella," said
the King. "We must find a home for Theodora and Emma."
As they started off for the village, the King reflected to
himself that his tribe's shortage of women, resulting from
an outbreak of the plague some years earlier, was on its
way to being remedied.
