In Spanish the name means "The Meadows" and it may have
deserved that name when a young Spanish Explorer named
Rafael Rivera first looked down on it but in December, 1946
gangster Bugsy Siegel selected this minor oasis in the
desert as the location of the first legal gambling Casino
in the United States. Today that oasis is a city that plays
host to over one million inhabitants and over 28 million
visitors per year.
Most of them are honest, law-abiding people who either work
in or visit the many hotels and casinos that make Las Vegas
what it is. But some of them come to break the law. When
they do, they have to deal with me. My name is Manly... I
carry a badge.

It was January 7, 2002... My Partner Sergeant Sinclair and
I were working the daywatch out of Metro when the call came
in. Frederick's of Hollywood out on Maryland Parkway and
Tropicana had been the victim of a burglary. We went out to
talk to the store manager... a thin middle-aged woman with
cold blue eyes and a sallow complexion... name of Emrys.
Agatha Emrys.
"Just the facts, Ma'am," I said. "Can you tell me what was
taken?"
"Lingerie, Inspector," she replied.
"Lieutenant, Ma'am," I corrected her. "How much lingerie?"
"Our entire allotment... I really haven't had a chance to
itemize, but the value of what was taken would be in excess
of a hundred thousand."
I nodded, making a note of the figure.
"How did they get in?" my partner asked.
"Through the skylight," she responded. "Unfortunately it
wasn't yet wired to our new security system... that was due
to happen next week."
"That's too bad, ma'am," I said, sympathetically. "Is there
anything else?"
"Just one thing," she replied. "It seems odd, now that I
think about it."
"What's that, ma'am?"
"The thief left a thank-you note taped to the cash
register."
Sgt. Sinclair nodded. "That IS unusual," he acknowledged.
"That's not what I meant," said Mrs. Emrys. "It wasn't the
sentiment... but the scent."
"The scent, ma'am?"
She nodded. "The note was heavily perfumed."
"I see," I said. "Did you happen to recognize the scent?"
"White Shoulders," she replied.
(DUMM DAH DUMM DUMM!)
"What was that?" Mrs. Emrys demanded.
"What was what, Ma'am?"
"That music!"
"What music, ma'am?"
"I could have sworn I heard... oh, nevermind."
"Just as you say, Ma'am."
(DUMM DAH DUMM DUMM DAAAAAH!!)
As we headed towards Charleston Boulevard my partner turned
toward me. "Joe, mind if I ask you a question?"
"What is it, Steve?"
"Back there when Mrs. Emrys mentioned White Shoulders you
looked kinda funny."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah... you ever know anyone who wore White Shoulders,
Joe?"
"Only my mother," I said. "It was her favorite scent."
"Sorry, Joe, I didn't mean to pry."
"That's alright, Steve."

"The Flex."
"That GLBT Club?"
I nodded.
"I don't get it, Joe... what's the connection?"
"I'm playing a hunch, Steve."
"That isn't like you Joe."
What could I say? He was right... it WASN'T like me but
SOMETHING told me I was on the right track.

The Flex Nightclub on Charleston is a well-known hangout
for the GLBT Community and I knew I'd find one of my
informants, Norma Nightingale, the Transgendered Songstress
there. As we walked in she was on stage performing a number
on her acoustic guitar.

Two hours later Steve showed up at my desk with a huge pile
of papers. "You were right, Joe," he said. "There's a
series of these heists all across the country. The last one
was in Los Angeles, California in 1998... the thieves hit a
Frederick's and, three days later, they cleaned out a
Victoria's Secret."
My eyes narrowed. "So!" I said, triumphantly. "I was
right!"
Steve gave me a funny look.
"What?"
"I'm surprised you hadn't heard about the case, Joe," he
said.
"Why should I have heard of it?"
"Weren't you working for the Los Angeles Police Department
in 98, Joe?"
"95-99," I confirmed. "But I never heard of the case... or
of I did I didn't pay any attention. Look at it this way,
Steve... who takes a light-fingered lingerie lifter
seriously?"
"No one," Steve admitted. "Until now. And here again... San
Francisco, California... May 3, 1988 Another Frederick's."
"May 3, 1988?" I echoed.
"Yeah. Why Joe?"
"It's just that I was in San Francisco at the Police
Academy in May of '88."
"Yeah," Steve said, giving me a strange look. "I know."

At three that afternoon Steve and I walked back into the
Flex. Norma Nightingale was just beginning a new set:

she meant, alright. And the look on Steve's face told me
that he didn't think much of what he was seeing.
"This new talent got a name?" Steve growled.
Norma shuddered. "No one knows her true identity," she
said. "She's like a ghost, you know? Just appears, does the
job, and vanishes into the night. They call her 'The Pink
Purloiner!'"
(DUMMM DAH DUMMM DUMMM!)
"Where's that music coming from?" Norma demanded.
"What music?" Steve and I chorused.
"Er... nevermind," she said, shaking her head.
"You got anything else for us?" I asked her.
"Just this," Norma hissed. "If she runs according to
pattern she'll be hitting a VICTORIA'S SECRET sometime
during the next three nights."

With our shift over Steve and I said goodnight and I went
back to my dingy third floor walkup on Paradise Road and
fell dead in the bed. Then I began to dream a very strange
dream... I dreamt that I was standing in front of my
bathroom mirror applying makeup. Foundation, eyeliner,
eyeshadow. lipstick... all of it... on a hot pink tubetop
and... and a matching skirt... finally pulling on a wig of
long blonde hair, I powdered my face to take off the shine,
stepped into a pair of pink heels and left the house.
Things got a bit hazy for awhile but I became aware of my
surroundings again as I opened a door and stepped inside. I
pulled a small flashlight from my pink shoulderbag and
shone it around suddenly I knew where I was. VICTORIA'S
SECRET on Sahara and Cimarron. I was just stepping towards
a rack of babydoll nighties when the overhead lights went
on and I woke up with a start as someone snapped a pair of
handcuffs on my wrists!
"Just take it easy, Joe."
"Steve?" I said. "What's going on?"
"You're under arrest, Joe. For the robbery of the
Fredericks and the attempted burglary here."
"But... but..."
"You have the right to remain silent, Joe. And the right to
have an attorney present during any questioning... if you
so desire and cannot afford one an attorney will be
appointed for you prior to any questioning. Do you
understand these rights, Joe?"
I nodded silently for I had suddenly caught sight of my
reflection in a floor length mirror and then it hit me! I
was the "Pink Purloiner"!!!!
